      It's amazing how radio equipment costs hardly anything to manufacture, and R&D is slow to say the least (considering how fast every other tech advances), and yet consumer radios continue to be exorbitantly expensive... There should be way more budget-friendly radios that are more than baofeng-level tech.

    Very nice review and video, NO annoying music. IT DOES NOT COME WITH A LAMINATED INSTRUCTION SHEET, PAPER ONLY. Got mine today 5-13-2023 , don't like the microphone very small light weight and , don't like the way numerals are lighted on it. Radio is much smaller than I expected . I will subscribe and watch more of your videos, so teach us more about this radio. Thanks Ham Radio Outlet.

      I have been a radio guy for many years but mainly RX only while in the military. Uk intermediate ham licence. I took ages to buy my "used" FTDX3000 from martin lynch and sons in the uk. It turned up brand new. Plastic on the screen.. . The point.. I always take ages to buy ham gear. I was toying with the 5100 or 2730 but when a used 500 came up for sale from a main dealer with 5% discount and 220 uk ponds cheaper than new.. boxed and as new... it was a no brainer. As ever I'd researched the heck out of the 500 and other dual banders

    I WISH Yaesu would go back to the ability to have channel banks. Where you could quickly add/delete certain groups of channels. NOT by band but simply by the way you want to group them. Say to quickly add police/fire/ambulance channels to the current scan list. Or to be able to add/delete some or all of the FRS frequencies. This was easy to do on the Ft8800 as "hyper memories" and also on the Ft60 handheld as banks. Come on Yaesu help us out!!

    • @joedidit3233
      @joedidit3233 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel the same. I would gladly trade the big tuning knob for configurable memory banks that would be much more useful to most users. I was just fine with using the smaller knobs to tune my ftm-400, and never wished for a bigger knob! They gave us the bigger knob that no one ever asked for, and completely ignored the memory banks that so many people have been asking for. At this point, my new Ftm-500 is sitting on my desk and I'm debating on whether to replace my FTM-400 in my car with it.

    I really hope that V/UHF comes back to the way it used to be in the 80s and 90s , in my area you could find a QSO anytime of the day or night. I've made a lot of long-time friends from running VHF and UHF I ran a digipeater at my home that was always busy and we had a state-wide packet system we had a lot of groups that had special interests IE motorcycle groups, hot rod enthusiasts , model aircraft groups etc. and most of that traffic was on the FM subbands , there was also lots of interest in SSB groups that were hill top operators . fast scan TV as well as slow scan was also popular. sadly the bands are so quiet now, however DMR has breathed some new interest into the high bands. this new rig is really sharp and hopefully it gets the youth as well as old goats like myself interested and re-interested in high band ops. I hope this new technology will spur folks to get on the radio. I know that these new rigs are expensive, but they are top quality and should last a very long time, think of it as an investment, so get on the air and get others involved, get some old fashioned round-table discussions going. thanks for the video . 73 ..

    One thing I’m hoping to see from Yaesu dual band mobiles is CAT control. The FT-857 had it. Given that the 857 supported 2m and 70 cm and since Icom ID-5100A has CI-V in a dual band radio, it would be a nice feature to see again, particularly for satellite work. Especially considering that the ID-5100A is considerably cheaper and has it.

    I have the ftm 400. I don't see nothing special enough to spend the money to get this one. It's time for all standard mobile radios to be triband and start doing 80 or 100 watts maybe allowing your phone to hook up to it through Bluetooth to use phones apps to send winlink, sstv, keyboard cw, plus offering am fm ssb. I would spend the 500 or 600 for a new one then.

    Love the video Josh, the one thing you didn’t talk about though is the price, and that’s the biggest issue with this radio. It’s wayyy to expensive for what it does. The FTM 300/200 do 80-90% of what this radio does and they are incredibly cheaper. I was really disappointed when I saw the price because I was so excited about this radio release. While Yaesu did make improvements in remote audio, microphone plug on remote head, quick function menu and a nice touch screen I have one complaint. There are no memory groups/banks. I feel for a mobile radio that was a huge feature to leave out. I own an FTM-300D which has one M-GRP that allows you to create a customizable channel list. After reading the manual for the FTM-500D and not seeing any memory groups/banks, other than grouping by band, I'm a bit disappointed. I hope they can at least give it the same M-GRP feature that the FTM-300D has by doing a firmware update as this would then be a great radio.

    @johnarcher9480 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The good:
    Head mounted speaker is convenient. Audio EQ is nice as well.
    Very functional APRS.
    Color screen.
    Tiltable head angle
    Best mic Yaesu has put in a mobile radio.
    Things that some might like, but seem useless:
    Memory band scope. So now you just scan 5 channels?!?
    Gigantic VFO knob. What it the point here?
    Things they clearly missed out on:
    Screen is a joke compared to the FTM-400 (get rid of the big dumb VFO knob)
    No customizable scan banks. REALLY?!? It’s 2023!?! Why is this so hard for Yaesu?
    Scan speed is way too slow (guess that’s why they needed a band scope)
    Price…are you kidding me?
    This thing is getting into HF base radio pricing! And for what? A big VFO knob and an onboard speaker?
    I hope buyers enjoy this radio, and being Yaesu, it should perform very well.
    But this will not get me to buy a Yaesu… I’d rather pay for the 200.

I bought my FTM-300 after owning an FT3D for a while and thinking it was just going to be a mobile 50 watt version of that. I was gravely disappointed when I got it only to find out that what I considered to be a basic “power windows and door locks” type feature wasn’t on their radio. Nobody divides local repeaters or travel repeaters by UHF and VHF so those separated groups are worthless. You can program nearly 1,000 channels into this bad boy and are forced to scan them all basically. Oh and if it’s like the FTM-300 guess what it doesn’t do when you reach the end of your channels and keep rotating that dial thinking it’s gonna loop back to the beginning? It doesn’t loop back to the beginning…you gotta rotate that dial backwards all the way back through your potentially hundreds of channels. Again, Yaesu is pumping out “2023 Ferrari” radios with “1993 Corolla” logic.

    What possible usefulness is a VFO knob on 2m/70cm radio? In fact it is so worthless, you only touched it once. But it takes up nearly 50% of the real estate. About as useful as MEMSCAN- another winning design from Yaesu- now we have KNOBSCAN.

      I wouldn’t I actually just bought a 400 last week. #1 I don’t buy new releases #2 the screen is smaller #3 my complaints about the 400 mostly involve the in my opinion way too small of a screen and not enough characters allowed on the memory. Granted having the digital on the B band is nice, the mic attached to the face plate is nice, and being able to attach the face plate to the radio is nice. All in all they screwed this one up in my opinion, they had the opportunity to knock it out of the park with this 500, but when they should have put a bigger display then the 400 on it they put a smaller one 🤦🏻‍♂️. And seriously, who the hell wants a giant VFO knob on a mobile vhf/uhf? On a HF absolutely but seriously? That’s half the available screen gone!

    Any chance of an updated review on this - particularly with regards to use with APRS and CAT (if supported) ? I've contacted Yaesu to ask about the APRS manual referred to in the FTM-500's manual - according to them as of 9 May 23 it's not available.
    While there are references to APRS in the supplied manual (online) it's unclear if it can support a connected computer or operate as a TNC. The manual provides no details on the 10 pin DIN at the rear of the unit (no pinout, list of compatible/supported cables, etc.) so beyond the 'inside the box' APRS functions (Position reporting, clumsy messaging) there is no clear indication it is any better than the FTM-6000.
    Also - can the Bluetooth interface do anything beyond a headset (e.g. PTT or serial data ?).
    Yaesu seems to be pushing the closed C4FM ecosystem, while making. only a token effort to support APRS.
    Thanks,
