    Lovely looking radio, but as others have said, its quite a bit of money. I am not very up to date with all this techno stuff, so my Yaesu FT8800 in my car really does do a good job. I have C4FM on my FT5D which I am yet to use, but I do think having this mode in my car would be useful. Hopefully there will be a few FTM 400's coming on the used market which I think would suit my style of radio. Great vlog and thank you for sharing.

    Its the price that holds me away. The FTM400 at around the £350 mark when I got mine, but then the 500 comes in around £630! Why? What is it doing to justify the massive increase in cost? For that money you'd expect it to be all mode and handle SSB as well.

    • @speedydiesel6076
      @speedydiesel6076 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed - add all mode and it would be a great V/UHF radio for base and /P but the price is too close to the 891 for what it is

    Great vid Mike, thanks for posting. I’d buy one it’s just that 2 and 70 are pretty dead to justify fitting in the car (I’d want it for mobile). I drove down from the Midlands to the south coast a month ago and not one QSO. See my dilemma! Yes Im old enough to remember struggling for channel space. I still love 2. 73 Mike

    I think it is actually really stupid that YAESU no longer supply the head separation cable with the FTM500 like they did with the FTM300 & FTM400. Why must you now suddenly buy it separately as an 'accessory"? One positive thing is that they now, eventually, put a mic socket on the head unit as well. Looks like an awesome unit.

    The FTM-500 Has no more Functionality than the FTM-300 , There may be menu software changes and "AESS" an extra speaker with a tilt head, but really no other new Features, to warrant the cost of the 500, Just get the 300 It is just as good

    Hi Mike. Thanks for doing a review on the 500. Looks like a decent rig, but like you said, not worth the extra cash. Yaesu... on point with the 500mA RX consumption, but SSB please. So we can play around with linear sats. Then you can have my money! -Derek

    I think you'd have to be a big C4FM user or really like the ergonomics of that radio to justify that price for basically a 2/70 FM rig and I say that as someone that can see six Yaesu radios from where I'm sat. Like others have said lack of SSB is a shame (at that price), at some point with SDR/DSP tech getting so cheap hopefully we'll see some multimode VHF/UHF kit in the future.

    Mike, the RT SYSTEMS S/W is available right now for the 500.. Far far superior than Yeasu's own stuff.
    Thanks for the video Mike and the time and effort put in in making and sharing it.
    It is sad to see that the UK is way more expensive than WIMO in Germany for this radio.
    At the UK price, the separation cable should have been included.
    Also... laminating the card should have been done.

      @albert7ii ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mike-M0MSN Mike... I am a well and truly Yeasu man... but to give RT Systems their due. Their S/W is fantastic. I am very active on most digital modes. The countless times the RT Sys menu editor for the FT991A has recovered my beacon are too numerous to mention. I have it for ALL my radios. It's interesting to note that their S/W is out.. while Yeasu's is still lacking.
      Do keep up the great videos and the amount of work and effort you are putting in is very much appreciated !
      Albert.
      PS: Just run the Yeasu coulor A4 thru a decent laminator. Suggest the 120 type pouches... the 80 ones are too thin. For the love of me I just cannot fathom why Yeasu treats us Europeans as second class citizens.

    Is there a nifty stand for the head Mike? So it can be desk mounted in the shack? I bought a new FTM400 before I had to dismantle my shack last September (for building work), and I really am not sure whether to move that on (new and unused) and get one of these, or just go for the FT991A. The FTM500 does look nice, but no SSB is a real own goal. That said, the 991A is long in the tooth now and could really do with an update - perhaps in the FTDX10 chassis with the nice high res screen etc. I'm rambling, sorry. Enjoy the radio :)

    The “sub-band” design is a terrible flaw and a big zonk on Yaesu. I’m STILL not used to it. Both VFOs on the 400 had equal capability and were much more user friendly, particularly in a mobile environment. This new concept is cumbersome and annoying.
