I actually do this method, basically :) Good "hearty dual purpose" (big for meat, lots of eggs), "minor comb" (because of cold weather). If I get a third category I add in "broody". Colors of feathers and eggs and heirloom status are a bonus. Temperament usually goes with dual purpose and large, but if I notice the word "flighty" that's a non-starter.

I stopped in the middle of this blog and ordered the catalog. My daughter and her husband are getting ready to start raising chickens and cattle on his grandmothers farm. They’re using tractors for raising the chickens. We’re excited about animals out there

Me too 😂😂 Well be expanding out tiny flock of three this year. We can have six. So well probably get 3/4 this spring. Leaning towards buying grow outs from a local breeder but I know my kiddos will love looking through the catalog to pick what they like

Just ordered my catalogs. Today we close on our new homestead. Your channel has fed my soul while I was in the waiting process.
The desire has always been in my heart. It's just part of my make up but my husband wasn't really on board. I prayed about 2 years ago that I would be content with what I was able to do on our 3/4 of an acre but if this desire was from him to change my husband's heart. Just about a year ago on a trip my husband began to tell me how he wanted to move further out and own more land. We serve a dream giving God.
This will be the first year for us to have chickens! I’m very excited, it’s going to be a journey.

When I was a kid in the 1970s I raised chickens and sold eggs. It was a good business for a young kid. My flock was Rhode Island Reds. They were really good layers

Wish my husband would do chickens again but he is against processing them ....he won’t eat them, plus he doesn’t really like chicken....and now he’s allergic to eggs........🤨
Organic chicken goes for 5.00 lb here and organic turkey cost 7.00 lb.
When my kiddos were growing up we had a large white rooster named Horrible Harold....he came after me one morning and attacked my legs...I took a board and whomped him and he kept coming...my Chow dog went after him protecting me.......rest in peace Horrible Harold.....he made good chicken egg rolls.....😋
I had a pet Silkie as a kid I would do that w/. It would almost put her in some kind of trance or relaxed state, so when I turned her right side up I'd have to shake her a little to wake her back up/bring her back around!😂
My son use to take the chicken put it on its back and take the side of his hand place it between the chickens eyes and slowly draw back...ya dahhhh instant chicken magic...didn’t hurt the gal and was great for health checks....🐔

I have 6 speckled Sussex hens. They are the SWEETEST ever. I love them so much. They want to be held all the time.
We have one and she is the same way. Very curious too.
I have one to, just loves to chatter away and follow us around and loves to be picked up and cuddled.
Do you have other chickens? I asked about them once in a chicken group after seeing them at an agriculture fair, and someone told me they can be mean to other chickens.
I do. I have 10 other chickens of various breeds. No issues at all.

I had 2 lavender Orpington roosters once. Beautiful, sweet, and protective over the hens. They were some of the only birds that let me hold them❤️

My most favorite I have had was a silver colored Sultan (i think thats how you spell it). Beautiful fluffy feathers, tiny and sweet disposition. Laid blue eggs.

Loved this sit down with the catalogue. Among others, we have two “Barn-eh-velders”. They have gone broody every year. We live in town so we can’t have roosters. So I put three chicks under Jane whenever she goes broody. She is a great mom. We are on the Oregon coast.

Oh, the hours I've spent with that catalog! Loved my Rhode Island Reds. They think they are dogs and their eggs in years two and three are humongous. Also had Americaunas whose beautiful blue eggs are lovable; the birds stay pretty aloof.

I use to get their catalog when the only way you could get the address was in the back of magazines like Mother Earth News. I would do the same thing by looking and dreaming. My favorite breeds were buff Orphs, Americanas and golden comets ( very calm breed). Can't wait to see all the different types you choose.

When my grandkids were young we built a chicken coop and got 15 Rhode Island reds. I put a zip tie with a different color pony bead on each chicken. The kids each claimed a chicken and the bead made it easy for them to be identified. We loved watching them grow and eating their eggs.
I miss having chickens. I don’t eat that many eggs, but loved seeing them and listening to the hens. My favorites were the barred rocks because they were so pretty, but I’ve had all kinds. I love a mixed flock. And, yes, I’ve been chased by mean roosters a few times in my life. 😉

Happy new year from MN. I have had chickens for 20+ years here . Right now I have three silver lace hens that I raised from chicks. I love them they are beautiful quite friendly and have pretty brown eggs and are very winter hardy. I also have three ameracunas and they are very winter hardy and friendly. We just lost our Mama hen, I have no idea what kind she was but we had had her for 3 years. Chicken math always gets the best of ya. Last spring every time my husband went to get chicken feed, he came home with more birds.
