    Watching these two geek out over chickens puts a huge smile on my face. They should start a chicken pod cast. I know I'd subscribe to it. 😊😊😊

    I put frozen berries in the water in the summer sometimes or some ice. It's so cute watching them bob for berries and it keeps them cool and hydrated.

Thank you Jess, Tom (and Miah) for bringing us along on this field trip. I loved seeing the baby chips. The ones with the Egyptian eye liner blew my mind.

    Got my first MMc catalog in about 1964. Like you, I memorized it. I was so into chickens and have been ever since. When I went to college, I majored in agriculture, and naturally, had to take a Poultry Production class. I was so bored because I felt like I knew more than the elderly professor doing the teaching, especially during the part of the class that dealt with chicken breeds.
    I found it interesting when you two were giving your favorites, that appearance had such a large part of your choices. Most TH-camrs talk about the best breeds for production and dual purpose and so on. While I too am a lover of pretty chickens, I mainly consider production for my favorites. However, I am guilty of trying to breed my Ameracanas for the blue/gray color just for fun. Had a major setback when my only blue rooster died and I simply could not find another gray rooster in our area. I also will not incubate any cream or pink eggs from them. Outcrossed with white leghorns one year to increase size and number of eggs. I am going to outcross again this year because egg size has shrunk again. Naturally, I have a lot of birds with single combs and no beard but that is OK for what I am trying to do.
    Also been breeding other breeds to ISA browns for about 10 years, saving back roosters to breed to the ISA brown hens. Now have a small flock of birds that are genetically about 127/128th ISA brown. Have to order new ISA Brown pullets ever couple of years, but this year I have a couple ISA brown roosters to breed to my pullets. Going to reverse the the gender thing this time.
    I could go on and on (like I haven't already) but thanks for the video.

    • @frugalmomofmany
      @frugalmomofmany ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want to start breeding and hatching my own chicks, but I don't understand breeds. Can you take an Isa Brown rooster and hen and still get Isa Brown, or would they revert back to what they were originally crossed with? I just want to know when I hat h eggs that I'm getting what I wanted. Is there a book or info on how to get different varieties?

    • @ronatwell5379
      @ronatwell5379 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frugalmomofmany There are a couple lines of thought. You could still have ISA browns if you put a rooster with hens of the same breeding (genetics), but the problem is that since they are hybrids, you won't have any consistency. i.e. it could be risky. My practice has been to use a different production breed rooster to breed to my ISA hens. Conversely, you could use an ISA rooster to breed hens of a different production breed. I did this for years and my chickens were 127/128ths ISA brown genetically although they looked nothing like hatchery ISA browns. Inbreeding is what you must avoid, so breeding a hatchery rooster to my hens, or one of my roosters to a hatchery flock of hens avoids that. No, I don't know of a book although there may be a magazine article somewhere that might explain the details. This may sound complicated but as you go through it year after year, it makes sense.

    I never knew there's so many different breeds of chickens. I knew eggs were brown or white, bit didn't know they could be speckled or blue. When I was a girl my Mom had some large white chickens, some for eggs & some for eating. I made sure I was hard to find when I knew we were having chicken for supper!!! Didn't want to be around the process of yard to table...lol. This is very interesting. May get me some chickens if my son's can help me with fencing & a coup. Love to here them crow & cluck!!! I'm just an animal person, 4 paws, 2 legs, feathers, fur it doesn't matter. Love all of God's creation. Thank you for teaching me new things. Love the videos & devotionals. Bless you Jess & Murray McMurray people!

    We are just outside the city centre in Sydney (45 minute walk) and just about every 3rd house has a few hens. We’ve been here 13 years and have had 2 lots of ISA browns, but this time we are doing 2 ISA and 2 Australorps. The Australorps (cross btwn Orpington and few other breeds) are the sweetest hens to have around children and are also great layers. Bonus is that they are very well adapted to the Australian heat and cold extremes.

    I recently agreed to buy 6 chickens, ended up with 27. Love them all. The Orpington loves to sit on my lap, Barred Rocks are friendly, Wyandottes go back and forth. Rhode Island and New Hampshires coming around more and more. Cochins are super friendly and curious. The only ones stand offish are the Easter Eggers, they don't want me to handle them.

And some road islands reds and some barred rock ,we even had a few white leghorns but one of my favorites was a Bantam silkie and they had those feathers on the legs and my little black hen from those Bantam silkies was a real good sitter she was a great brooder.

    Hi Jess, thanks for this video. I caved to my long time desire to have a few chicken today, it was totally unexpected. I had gone to purchase a flower pot and asparagus starts (which by the way I didn’t get)😳 instead I found myself standing over baby chicks and ducklings. I have to say that when I decided on the spur of the moment to make the leap to bring a “few” chicks home and maybe a duckling all because I fell in LOVE with two americanas the next thing I knew I brought home those two plus 2 cuckoo Marans , 3 golden comets , 2 silver laced , 2 golden laced polish, and 3 pekin ducks!! even though I don’t have a space prepared outside for them I’m obsessed with them and want to go back and buy the entire flock of Americanas.!!! I think I already need an intervention😳

    I ordered a catalog!! I don’t even have chickens, but would love to. I had chickens when I lived in Idaho years ago. In Kansas now.
