I have a 2000 4Runner and I bought a 1996 4Runner for $500.00 that was being scrapped. I rebuilt and restored her to new condition. I loved every minute of it. A GREAT friend gave me a 1996 Lexus LX450 (80 series Land Cruiser) Triple Lock with 500,000 miles on it. F R E E !!!! I am absolutely loving bringing her back to life. These vehicles last forever and continue to go up in value. I just finished rebuilding the front axles and now the starter. The coolant system and brakes are new and she has been meticulously maintained. Good luck with yours.
I love to hear that! It's always amazing how well these Toyota SUV's weather old age and high miles, and as long as they're not rusted through they are always worth bringing back to life with a little hard work and patience.
Very nice! I have an 80 that was a backyard find. Both our trucks, like most 80s, need the same repairs. I have enjoyed my repair journey and hope you will as well. I tried to video most of my repairs and processes and will post as I get the vids edited. I have found it is not as easy as it looks to do the work, explain what is being done, stay in focus on camera and get a video that is not too long and is beneficial to others. Hats off to those professional TH-camrs! Anyway, see you in the next video.

Absolutely will do! I'm going to video log the entire journey in as much detail as I can. I have to figure out how to get it parked in the home garage to start working on it, without leaving oil spots everywhere. I am thinking cardboard + a few large drip pans should do the trick hopefully!
Nice score on the 80 brotha.. Never a mistake with these rigs... A little bit of elbow grease and she is as good as new.. Oh yea, on the front mount of the passenger side front control arm, looks like there is 2 bolts and 2 nuts holding that mount to plates/diff housing. Probably not an issue, but I would change that to oem nut and bolt..

this model is a beast if you restore it you have a great truck as the specifications mentioned with today prices you are a winner please as you change engine gasket include the oil pan too and to my modest exp the land cruisers tend due to raugh offroading bolts lose grab they need to be examined and tightened every 50 thousand miles .
Definitely! I can see the lower oil pan leaking for sure. I'll be removing both upper and lower after some of the top end work is done to clean, flatten, and reseal them. I agree, I think this old truck has a lot of life left and deserves another chance. Poor thing has been driven and not maintained, but we'll get it back to life soon hopefully.

I have four FZJ80's and you gotta put in the time and money to get them back to not leaking. Gaskets and O-Rings simply break down over time. Even if it not leaking and it is a new rig to you, change all the gaskets and O-Rings. Score on the triple lockers;)
I absolutely agree! And I find that a lot of people don't maintain them for some reason. Seems to be a common theme with the 80 series. I've had many of these trucks over the last 25yrs. I just started documenting my adventures with them recently. Take a look at some of the other videos on my channel, you'll find lots of good old cruiser content :-) I can't wait to get it all fixed up to take it on some trails with the kids!
@@NKPGarage Kinda funny this video hit my radar. I have a base 1994 FZJ80 that is not triple locked, but has 320K on it and it has been ridiculously taken care of. No rust, body is in really great shape, interior is also in great shape, everything works and no major leaks, but everything wears out eventually. Recently, it started squeaking and needs new suspension bushings. Sounds like the steering pump is about to take a shit and I am dealing with a minimal power loss that is probably from a bad MAF, I am dealing with a failed injector or it needs a valve job. This is the drama we deal with with almost 30 year old rigs, but this vehicle has never let me down or the first owner. I am in the process of repairing the MAF that I think is the problem with power, but the bushings and steering pump is routine maintenance to begin with. Americans don't get that and think everything is disposable to them. You take of the vehicle and it will take care of you. Keep in mind these vehicles are hitting almost 30 years old.
@@ervingritzeriii1360 I absolutely agree! These are solid vehicles that were built at the pinnacle of Japanese manufacturing. When Japan was building cars and trucks to specifications that were much higher than the rest of the world. They will last a lifetime if they are taken care of and maintained properly! For your injector/AFM issue, before you go trying to replace the AFM or repair the AFM I would encourage you to replace the fuel filter and run at least 4 or 5 tanks with StarTron enzyme fuel treatment. It does wonders in cleaning fuel injectors and valves far beyond any normal fuel treatment. I use it on all of our boats, new cars, old cars, and trucks and it has worked miracles in many instances where I thought I would need to replace parts. Here it is on Amazon: amzn.to/3INwp7c
EVEN WITH all things considered, you have a rig worth keeping my friend. 👍 edit:indeed your birfs are in need. That's diff fluid mixing with birf grease puking out. And you nailed that last bit of advice - baseline before modding these older rigs.
The original axle seals are good but i installed Marvin Crawler Heavy Duty Axle Seals when I rebuilt the front axles. this will ensure no more diff' fluid mixing with the birf' grease. I put bearing/bushings in place of the old original spindle bushings too.
@@NKPGarage There's really nothing down this way.. Been up to Bastrop once.. there's some trails there in what used to be an non-developed housing land turned to trails everyone goes to. And the other you probably already know is Hidden Falls.

The best way is to replace them if possible, and then sand/prime/paint the pieces that are not replaceable. The trim at the bottom of the windows is still available from Toyota and I will be replacing those. The others I have been trying to find, but no luck so far so I may end up painting them.
My 97 LX450 has a timing cover oil leak. I've done the the oil pump seal and front crank seal. I am not looking forward to removing the cover to replace the two o-ring seals. It looks like it's time consuming. I may just go ahead and do the timing chain and tensioners while it's all apart. I have AT-205 in it right now until I can get to it. I know not the best option but it seems to be working.
Usually the timing chain guide is what needs to be replaced. Do a visual inspection while you have the cover off to see how things look under there. At least once you get it repaired and put new seals in, you will know it was done right and should be good for several more years
Aisin makes toyota water pumps,the factory pumps say toyota and aisin.if you look at an Aisin pump you can see were they just grind the word toyota off
looking at a 94 triple locker with a blown head gasket my be...if so wonder if the owner cooked the block...or go and offer less for the work needed to the engine...he's asking 8k as is...???
8K is a bit high unless its very low mileage in my personal opinion. But if it is super clean maybe its worth it. If you do the work yourself you'll be in it for at least $3k in parts to get it all fixed up on the motor. But you never know what else might be hiding in there.

I am unsure why fixing a few rust spots with a touchup is a challenge due to "old paint." Especially on an off-roader. Must be nice to live in a place where if you don't fix rust right away it will spread in days (especially in the winter).
some touchup paint would probably be okay with spot treatments. But the paint is from 1997, and its old, and faded, so any spot resprays would be noticeable.
The roof liner damage could have been from a velcro patch(s); maybe the previous owner had some in that area that stuck on harder than others?? I have never put them on the liner, but they seem pretty popular with overlanders these days.
It's the common theme. People want to look cool but forget that they're leaking a liter of oil per week. This one will get fixed up correctly. BTW, just checked out your channel!!! Amazing videos you have there. I've got a few bookmarked to watch with my two little boys!!

@@NKPGarage I'm FZJ80 I'm planning on picking has exactly the same issues as yours. Pressure tested it yesterday and huge leak in the back. So safe to assume it's the heater hose. I subbed. I will be closely following your channel to see your progress for tips as well.
My wife says these old worn out Land Cruisers are holes in the driveway that we just throw money into. LOL It is my only hobby/sport and I get a lot of personal satisfaction from it so it is a great value regardless of the cost.
@@robertclark2714 Very true. It is all about personal satisfaction and enjoyment at the end of the day. The time I spend with my boys working on these old projects is priceless for me. Teaching them how something old is not to be thrown away, but to be taken care of, restored, and appreciated. Those are lessons that no school will ever be able to teach them.

15k in maintenance? Even if you have to replace the head gasket AND reseal everything, it shouldn't add up to 15k. If you are talking about FIXING everything up to factory/Concours... maybe?
Factory concours restoration would cost upwards of 30k if done right. Cost of just the parts is very different than the cost of parts plus the work. There's also doing the bare minimum versus doing it right. I guess it's all in the eyes on the owner and how far you want to go with things.
Oh yes, if you include labor it easily needs $15k in maintenance and repairs. Maybe more. I'm doing most of it myself and expect that it will cost me around $5-7k in parts and the labor will be on me.

Agreed. Aisin makes great parts. I still prefer genuine Toyota parts when they are still available. But Aisin is definitely top notch as well.

I have on several other 80 series I have had over the years. On this build all of those hoses will be replaced with new.

They seem to be the correct length. But keep in mind, they are weld together sliders so they require some work to put together.

That's a good point. It does look like it could be damage from velcro type hook and loop fasteners. Hmmm. Will definitely have to take a closer look!.

That Pearl coat paint is impossible to match regardless how old it is.
I 100% agree. If it gets painted it will need to be an entire vehicle repaint, in the factory color.

Oh man. It's so hard to get smoke smell out. But there's definitely ways to do it with the right products and a lot of work.

Oh yes, if you include labor it easily needs $15k in maintenance and repairs. Maybe more. I'm doing most of it myself and expect that it will cost me around $5-7k in parts and the labor will be on me.
