very good info on one beast of a truck. that original radiator in a 20+ yr truck is pretty impressive. one thing not mentioned.... check those power windows. 80s are notorious for having power window motor issues.
Mr. Cairo it’s not the purchase price, it’s the thousands of $ and hours and hours spent weaving a tapestry of profanities in your garage while taking care of the ‘deferred maintenance’ the previous owner didn’t do. I’m hoping to enjoy it this coming year, I’m nearly caught up with the repairs since I bought it in June
🤣🤣🤣 take her offroading and out to dinner later, buy her some flowers. Worked for me. 1993 fzj80 331k miles. Now shell be happy when the ac works again.
Watched your 100 Series video - saved me a headache! Found a '96 LX450 I'm looking at the Saturday, took notes on this video and definitely bringing them with me! Thank you for these great videos!!
I have a 1996 80 Series with 99500Kms (61500 Miles) on the clock with petrol (gasoline) engine. Had it since new. Recently purchased a new 200 Series Landcruiser with the twin turbo diesel engine. Kept the Series 80, to good to get rid of and the price, here in Australia is rising as people realise what an outstanding vehicle they are.
If there is oil dripping off gearbox bell housing I would also check upper oil pan arch near the rear main seal, pretty common oil leak. It looks like a rear main seal but often isn't.
Thanks. After watching you carefully inspect and discover the nascent problems in 20 year old vehicles that are very reliable, I realize that I don't not want one. Too many things to worry.
Good to know. My neighbor has a 95 that I'm very interested in. He's done lots of work to it but it's now sitting due to needing new head gasket. BTW, as of this note, you have 2007 subscribers! Nice job! :-)
My brother bought a sweet 97 for cheap a few months ago because the head gasket was blown. Him and my dad replaced it in the back bay of the shop and now it's his daily driver :)
Thank you. This video is one of real value. Much appreciated. I think most stuff is strait forward to put right on the 80, thinKing about getting one in about 50 year when I can afford it. LoL hopefully not that long ehy.
look for chassis cracks at the front upper panhard rod mounting point to chassis, most times handbrake will be not work very good unless genuine toyota handbrake shoes were used and or extended dog bones, front hub flanges where the axle contacts gets slowly impacted until they become pointy and breaks, rear brake proportioning valve leaks quite common
Great video. If your shop was repairing and replacing everything you pointed out to get the truck baselined, what would you estimate would be the full cost of all that?
Not sure on the total for everything. I've never had to do an estimate for all of it at once. The average 80 that comes through for a new purchase inspection is usually between 3500 an 5k in catch up maintenance and repairs.
OTRAMM I bought a 91 211 K Cali Truck 80 series $3200 replaced main seal they took off smog equipment I registered it in NV as A classic had all fluids hoses brakes checked it’s a great slow Tractor Engine and Transmission. In KY....want to say thanks for the video. Looking at a 1996 LC - no lockers - with 201k miles. I wanted to take this to my mechanic and get it looked over, but would you recommend someone who specializes in 4WD vehicles or can any mechanic pretty much look it over? We plan on hitting road full time. Purchased an Avion travel trailer, a 1 ton Chevy tow vehicle, and now searching for the right 2nd vehicle we will take with us on the road. The 2nd vehicle will be my car to drive to work + our exploring/camping vehicle. We have driven a Sequoia, 4-runner, and now the LC. I love the size of the LC. I am a big fan of older vehicles. They are tough and easier to work on (usually). Currently own a 1993 Chevy G20 van and a 2000 Dodge 3500 van (camping vans). We want 4wd....we want more flexibility on our exploring (not going to do any major off - roading, but the vans due to size and all have limits), own a 2007 Toyota Highlander but made the mistake of not buying 4WD. So if I purchase this LC, it will become daily driver + exploring/camping vehicle. The LC is looking very promising except have learned that LC are all time 4wd.....I am weighing out the down fall of mpg on a daily driver......but that aside, I don't want to get into a total rebuild on a vehicle either. Sorry to ramble....but question #1) I appreciate any input you may have especially finding the right mechanic to give this a going over prior to purchasing it. #2) It currently has like 33" tires on the thing. It looks awesome, but I would prefer to go back to stock size tires. Is this a good choice? Do you see good performance on some kind of a stock AT tire? #3) I tend to keep vehicles for a long time. Worst case scenerio, I buy a LC with high miles, love it, and then time comes it may need, say, a motor. Is it possible to put a motor in these older LC's? What about transmissions? I appreciate you sharing all this great information. Glad I found your channel. Has been very helpful.
Any mechanic should be able to give them a decent once over. Someone specialized in Cruisers will know all the trouble spots to check though. I'd go to Ih8mud.com's clubhouse section and find the club nearest to you. They'll know who the local Cruiser gurus are. Tires I don;t pay a ton of attention to. We don't do them in house so I never really pay attention to what people are running. You can change out the motor and trans. They aren't cheap but it can be done. We've got a couple of engine rebuilds coming in over the next few months.
@@OTRAMM Thanks so much. Awesome that you replied so quickly. I really appreciate it. I will go check out that site. I have read several forums on there already about different questions. We are in West KY. I will see what I can find. Have a great weekend!!!!!
What about rust under front arches on firewall, rain gutters and rear barn door? Also crack on chassis under/next to steering box? Pretty common things.
We didn't get the barn door option here :) We don;t see much rust on the 80 Series here, or steering box cracks. I guess maybe it's a regional thing. I'll add them to the list of things to check.
Front oil pump cover seal. Distributor oil seal. Exactly what my lookings were. Thanks for great video! I wonder whats it take to fix these issues by the book or cost?
I've only seen one 80 series pump actually leak oil. We see them more often for noise. We just get new ones from Toyota. The rebuilds don't seem to hold up well.
Ha ha, you know what we'd call that 80 here in the UK? Brand New. Not a lot of rust issues? Oh I wish. We spread salt all over the roads here just in case there's a mild frost. Consequently when we look at an 80 it's a case of trying to find a patch that's not rusty. It's a shocker.
This is all very useful information but is any of this stuff major enough that it would prevent you from buying a vehicle altogether? Aside from major rust issues, isn't this all maintenance stuff that if a few things are wrong, can easily be made right? It's good to know what's going to need to be replaced after purchase, but what here should I be seriously worried about in terms of buying an 80. Cheers
It all depends on budget and the purchasers ability to work on the truck. Anything can be fixed with time and money. The video is to point out items that will likely need to be addresses so you can either use them as bargaining points or to budget for repairs. I just bought a truck that has just about everything in the video wrong and then some, but I fix them all day long so I wasn't concerned. If I was going to have to pay to have everything repaired there's no way I would have bought the truck I did. If someone was tight on budget a lot of issues could be a deterrent. The only thing that would keep me from buying one at a really good price is holes in the frame.
Thank you for this great video. It's very explanatory. What type of motor oil do you recommend on a 1993 land cruiser with approximately two hundred twenty thousand miles?
If you go by the Australian owner's manual it has oil recommendations from 5w-30 to 20w-50 based on the temperature you operate in. I live in socal and use 15w-40.
@@OTRAMM I purchased a 97 a few years ago and there was a red wire on that connector when I got it. Took the truck to get detailed and the wire was gone. I am wondering now what correct terminals are supposed to be connected to get my codes to blink.

My 1997 Landcruiser still has original radiator hoses. They look good. Should I go ahead and change them?
They seem to last forever. The only reason we see them go bad is breaking down from being coated in oil.
