    Roden 816
PD-3751 'Silversides' - an intercity bus created in the mid-1930s by Yellow Coach for one of the largest coach companies, Greyhound Lines. The bus was a real revolution in automobile construction; corrugated aluminum and plastic materials were widely used in its structure, and special attention was paid to maximum comfort for passengers because after the construction of a wide network of high-quality highways between all the cities of the country during the Great Depression, rail passenger traffic almost stopped due to its inability to compete with high-speed road transport. Mass production has been going on since 1939 at the Pontiac West Assembly plant in Pontiac, Michigan, where General Motors used to build pickups and trucks. With the entry of the United States into World War II, the mass transportation of recruits at assembly points, and by the military in all countries, presented a major challenge, and to solve this problem the US decided to use the Greyhound Lines buses. As early as 1942, they carried more than 130 million passengers, both military and civilian, more than just an impressive figure, as it accounted for almost half of the country's population. After the war, Silversides continued to conduct passenger traffic within the country, and some of them were resold to third countries, mainly in Latin America. This bus is one of the symbols of the United States, along with Ford cars and Boeing aircraft, and embodies the significant technological progress that made this country great in the first half of the twentieth century.
This GM bus revolutionized the industry, and set the template for all over-the road buses to come: forward control, rear transverse diesel engine, the famous fluted aluminum “Silversides” cladding, semi-monocoque construction, high floor and underfloor luggage compartments. But its wildest feature was not replicated: a four-on-the-tree shifter and its mechanical linkage back to the non-synchronized gear box; something had to be left to improve. Let’s check it out and delve into the history and workings of its legendary Detroit Diesel 6-71 engine, which first made its appearance here.
GM’s two-stroke Detroit Diesel (“DD”) engine is one of America’s engineering marvels of the twentieth century. Designed under the direction of Charles Kettering at the GM Advanced Labs, the two-stroke principle was used in part because of the desire to have a compact and light engine for use in GM’s coaches, which dominated the industry, or would very soon. Many of you already know its operating principles, but for the uninitiated, they’re worth repeating again.
The DD is different from the typical loop-scavenged two-stroke engine, which has no valves and relies strictly on ports (openings) in the cylinder for the intake and exhaust, as well as crankcase pressure to help keep the gases flowing (typically, but not always). The DD two-stroke “Uniflow” has port openings in the cylinders for the intake air, but has two or four exhaust valves in each cylinder’s head. In order to fill the cylinder with fresh air since there’s no intake stroke, a blower is essential for its operation. Here’s a short video showing the DD two stroke cycle.
The DD engine family was designed from scratch to be modular, to be built in many cylinder multiples. The “71” indicates the cubic inch displacement per cylinder; therefor this 6-71 has 426 CID. Two, three and four cylinder versions were offered from the beginning for powering everything from smaller trucks, gen-sets, pumps, tractors, marine use, and a host of other applications where its small size and durability put it to great advantage. Later, larger multiples were also built, including V8, V12, V16 and according to one source, even a V24. The smaller 53 family soon joined, and in more recent years, a 92 family largely replaced the 71 series. But the 71 family lasted into the 1990’s, and millions of these engines are still at work in all manner of vehicles, boats and equipment. The same basic two stroke diesel design was also scaled up and used in diesel locomotives, where GM enjoyed a near monopoly for decades.

October 1947, in a story repeatedly retold, my mother took the one year old "me" on a Greyhound Bus from where we lived in a houseboat in Rock Island to Peoria, Illinois to "show off the baby" to kin folk. There is little for me to remember about the outside of the bus, I was napping, but you've "nailed" the interior colors. You even left a little paint smear to represent baby throw up in the very seat where I was. Nice build. Very nice. BTW all true...

    Hi,
I traveled on this very model from central Mexico to Nogales, Az. At some time during the tree day, three night trip, we had a blowout on an inner rear tire……we found ourselves in no man’s land; surrounded by high vegetation and mosquitoes making the place intolerable. The driver had no choice but to keep going to our next station……this was in December of 1954; busses had no radios. When I was picked up by my mother, on the way to Las Vegas, Nv, on one or our stops to gas up, she bought me a die cast model of the bus. The driver was quite friendly an allowed me to stand up front and chat with him….I was in heaven. With all that said, the one detail you missed was the black rubber walkway in the isle as well as the black entrance steps. I really enjoyed the video…..that bus will always hold many fond memories. Thanks for sharing it with us

April 3, 2022---Thanks for showing off the kit and your build of it....looks great as is, out of the box. Was shocked when I found this kit by accident on Ebay a few months ago. Thing is, as soon as I saw it, thought of it in a different way: as a older class A motorhome. Still into my 1/35 scale zombie/apocalypse diorama kick and awhile back, saw via Google a diorama of what looked like an old school bus used as a survival vehicle. Think it took me TWO YEARS to find that Aarii made this and other buses in 1/'32 scale. Got 2 in my stash. People will buy these school buses and make them into motorhomes and they're called skoolies. Modern buses are also being converted in motorhomes, more or less just like this kit. Another reason for me to learn cad so I can print an entire interior, though I already have free files on couches, chairs, etc. that I hope to use. Thanks for the video.

I'm a retired on in 1970. They still had some of these PD 3751 as extra busses, but we trained on them. The thing you weren't too sure what it was, on the left side, was the air conditioner. It had a small gas motor that turned the a/c compressor.

Roden is to be commended for this, and other unusual offerings for the modeler to work with. Hopefully, innovative model manufacturers like Roden, Mini Art, Master Box, Mikro Mir, and other Ukrainian companies will continue to provide us with interesting subject matter. I can imagine the difficulty level. At least your not taking on a Miniart kit. I have no memory of any easy Roden kit & I have done a few. I believe they are competitive in detail. Love the era. I like it & want it. I get a vibe from it. Put Roswell as the destination. To late for the video but, you could replace it. If it were ship those seats would be deck guns. At least the ad was relevant about a cordless airbrush.

Some parked it by a old warehouse about 2 years ago and put a 4 sale sighn in it. Back in the 1940,s till the late 60,s my Grandfather drove a Old Mack Greyhound I believe a LJ but not sure I would have to dig out his pictures just recently we sold his Driver,s Cap and Coat.

I ordered this kit from Model Round-up right after I saw your preview earlier in February. I received it in less than two weeks and am looking forward to building it.
As I have mentioned in other comments - Roden is a very good model maker and I am a cheerleader for them ! Several of the other Ukrainian manufacturers are
also at the top of my list. Speaking of dioramas - I have found that the 1/35 scale kits work well (size wise) with many of the Warhammer 40000 kits if you are
looking to build a zombie / horror / sci fi type of display. Good luck everyone - let the creative process begin !

Nice bus, maybe this will inspire others to make other bus kits. P.s. The machine inbetween the wheels with the grille is the aircon (iirc) and the reason the bulkhead behind the driver is so big is its the ducts for heat\ac fyi.

Ukraine was producing a lot of good kits. I have a few. Just hope they will be able to produce more in the future. My heart goes out to the Ukrainian people . Long live Ukraine.

Nice job Chris and v useful to see how you masked it all up. Sad footnote on this kit is the artist was killed in front of his Ukranian apartment block about 2 months ago in a missile attack so very poignant they include a separate artwork sheet...

I was thinking of the bus in the "I Love Lucy" episode when they were in California and Lucy and Ethel went on the Stars Home Tour. Not sure if same just came to mind.

Nicely done. I was wondering if you cut off the pins on both sides of the overhead rack assembly? They have large pins on both parts that do not line up with anything. Yours looks like it went together where the pieces lay together flat against one another. The only way I see to do that would be to cut off the 13 large pins on the upper rack and the 16 large pins on the bottom half.

Yes I know these Molotov-colours Chrome. The best real shining and lightly durable Chrome-finish ever ! I would have used on the sides instead of that silver to give that model this 'extra-kick' ... !? ( You can use them in the airbrush also with a overwhelming effect ! )
