- Welcome back to part 3 of the VQ35 build where I dive into the timing chain and other front end accessories of the engine. In this part I will also be showing some upgrades to the oil pump, thermostat, as well as talking about a few other key factors about timing in the VQ35.

Hell yea! Just in time for lunch 🤙
Build is coming along nicely.
Inspiration for home- mecanik 🔥🔥🔥🙏🙏 great jop
So excited about the next vid!
Man, you are on luck today!
The dreaded timing chains, glad to see you're still chugging through the build 🔥
We're getting there
The beat is tight!!!
Can’t wait for more 🙌
Next part will be out soon!
New episode hell yeah
Those secondary tensioners got ya. I've also pulled my rear cover when building my VQ to redo the RTV. I actually had a leak around the water jacket and didn't know it until it was in and running. Big whoops.
Been watching this de build 🔥 I’ve built a few of them and when you were trying to say you gotta pull the rear cover back off I died bro, been through that several times 💀
Haha I'll always be the first to laugh at myself over those types of things
Any tips on setting the passenger cams on the marks the exhaust cam is slightly off while both the other intake and other exhaust cam are on the the timing marks
Once upon a time I was doing a lot of work with VQ secondary tensioners, I cringed as soon as I saw them missing. I also remember that the factory threebond RTV was a lot stronger than black permatex... but I honestly dont know if people have had success with it in the wild. Awesome build I'm considering following along with the home game.
Thanks! I know exactly what you mean with the rtv. I've had good results using it 9n other builds but we'll see how it goes.
Also, as far as tensioners, do you mean the external ones for belts or ones for the timing chain? Just wondering if I missed something.
@OldDatsun the timing chain... where is the chain kit from? There was a revision to the guide plates for wear that's a pretty important thing to have.
Oh yeah these are the "tougher" material. It's from Concept Z Performance
Good to see this progressing. While I'm still currently on stock bottom end, I've stripped the entire engine back to block and heads to redo all seals and gaskets, including galleries.
Regarding the intake VCT, it is programmable but maybe not with a stock ECU? I'm using a Link G4X and they're completely adjustable through the whole range. Needed some PID tuning because of the larger cams (JWT C2/C8) but they work as you'd expect.
Right, I've only read from others that you need additional components to get any type of tuning. Thanks for adding in the names of things here
@@OldDatsun No problem.
Phaser lockouts are used to delete the VCT, but typically where it isn't necessary or power/rev limit is exceeding their capability. Revup engines have intake and exhaust VCT, but the exhaust is magnetically actuated, thus a little less dependable than the oil driven intake phasers. I know of examples where lockouts were used on exhaust cams because the actuators were becoming erratic at 8000rpm (track car).
In your case, any modern aftermarket ECU will do it. Worth the investment for a build like yours anyway.
Reach out if you want to talk VQs! I'll be looking to add a tear -down (and eventually build) video of a donor VQ to my own channel in due course.
Great set of vids. Can any of this be applied to the VQ40DE?
I did the exact same thing with the rear timing cover. I then reinstalled it without the plungers in and had to take the cover off again. Lol
It's an easy mistake to make haha
You got a new sub. Also like how you called yourself out and show how you messed up. So others don't do the same thing. Did you add trv to valve covers in corners
Welcome to the channel! I aim to stay honest with all my stuff but I do appreciate it being a plus for viewers.
It’s required per the manual, definitely do it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the HR oil pump doesn't fit the De engine, TMK the upgrade is the rev-up oil pump from the VQ35DE rev-up motor. If you need a bigger upgrade the that would be boundary billet gears.
You're correct. I misspoke on this. This oil pump is from Concept Z Performance and is sold as a rev up oil pump upgrade that fits into a DE. This is also a cheaper option than going for billet gears and fits better for my build. Here's a link to the oil pump if anyone is curious.

Glad to see the build progressing I would like to boost my de and im wondering what did you do for machine work? Did you get the block honed with a torque plate for the studs? I hear you have to otherwise the cylinders will warp.
To be honest the machine shop handled all of it. I knew they would do a hone but I didn't ask about every step they took but I trust their work.
You said in the video all thr bolts are torqued to 9 to 10 ft lbs on the back cover or did you mean inch pound I see you are use a small ratchet just thought I check
Never heard anything but did you have to set the number 1 piston to topdead center first
Yes, I set piston one to top dead center. It has an indicator on the rear timing cover but I also verified top center on piston one by measuring it before installing the cylinder heads.
How were you able to remove those dowel pins from the intake cams?
You can pull them with pliers and if they're giving you trouble you can always hit it with some heat and they'll pull free
Did you buy all new sprockets? If so, where did you get them?
Yes, it's this OEM from Concept Z Performance

You used a revup oil pump, not an HR pump, right?
The pump I used is from Concept Z Performance and has the internals of the hr but the de housing. You can use either but the hr pump is made for higher sustained rpms.
Hi there
Can you i use these videos on a Nissan Navara V6 engine( VQ40)
I mean all three videos
Hmm I know the VQ35 and the VQ40 are pretty similar but mostly tailored for different vehicles. VQ40s were mostly in trucks which I would guess would differ the oil pans and probably a good amount of the accessories. However, I would think the blocks and heads are pretty similar with maybe a few differences.
Please let me know if you end up finding that they are similar. Might be something to look into.
Is that the EPS gallery gasket kit?
It's a gallery kit from Concept Z Performance
As a noob, where did you get the knowledge to do all this work by yourself?
Haha I totally identify as a noobie 😂 honestly, a lot of it is knowing what to google. There's always old forums that I can find and mostly just learning about mechanics. Mostly its finding the proper way to do things and not just quick fixes.
Are you in Georgia I need you to build my engine
Where do u get all the torque specs and info from ?
The factory service manual (FSM). You can google it and find a download

But impossible to find anything for 2020 INFINITI QX60
VQ35DD
Dealers sell them but when it comes to DIY they don’t recognize this car 😂
Where can we get the oil pump?

Don't work on these engines ever but seriously a split timing cover that's as bad as Audi and others with a rear timing chain smh
