Is the 2024 Lexus GX 550 a BETTER new luxury SUV than a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon?

- The GX gets a full redesign for 2024. On the outside you will see all new sheet metal, 22in wheels and LED lighting. On the inside you will be greeted by 3-rows of usability. Under the hood is a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 that is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

I absolutely LOVE what Lexus did to the outside design of the GX 550 😍❤️
I totally agree with you!
I feel like we been waiting for this Truck forever. I think i will wait another 2 yrs and buy one with 20-30k miles on it. Keep it for 25 yrs.
I don't think these are going to depreciate very fast. When we bought a 4runner back in 2017, a used one was a very small difference in cost vs. new.
Buy a used G-Wagem in the meantime while waiting. That’s my plan anyway.
Love this GX550, I'd definitely buy one of these.
GWagon has always been one of my favorite SUVs. It has become the new family mini van where I live here in FL. With that being said. I would definitely take this Lexus over the Gwagon.
Agreed. Many times more reliable probably and for a fraction of the price of a G-Wagon.
It's G-WAGEN not G-Wagon. And it's pronounced "Geh Vahgen"
Just go ineos
You mean Rich people mini van
After owning a g class I would much rather own a gx
This is slowly becoming my fav midsize SUV for its style, reliability, luxury, price proposition and true off road features.
Agreed
Reliability is questionable. Recent Tacoma 4wd system breaking on TFL's channel and number of tundras with engine failure with turbo 6
@@ph00ny1 👎 1.TFL issue was a rare one and toyota fixed it .2.tundra issues are taken cared and not a issue .overall just because something goes wrong at tfl dont mean anything .please stop talking about goddamn tfl 🤫
Dude this is the first v6 turbo on the gx how tf you know its gonna be as reliable as its v8 predecessor? 😂
Lmao car just barely hit the market and you’re talking about reliability? This is why we laugh at you Toyota boyz. Always just saying BS.
You found your calling my dude! I’m a real OG and I can appreciate a straight forward review and no fluff. G2G
Thanks for having my back!
Was that G2G? Gay to Gay?🤔

I would definitely choose the Lexus GX 500 over a Defender or G Wagen for Toyota reliability, ride, power, and off road ability and comfort.
This man has high digits IQ
How can you know of these without having driven them back to back? Now turbos are reliable because they’re in a Lexus?
@@MercOne Toyota is known for reliability especially Lexus where the material is a lot more refined than your typical Toyota. Lexus can easily in due time fix any issues.
@@prxhcision1597 I own a Lexus so you aren’t telling me anything. None of what you says has anything to do with what I just said.
@@MercOne I own a GX450h (just bought it off of lease) as I wait to upgrade to the GX550h (hybrid) once it's out.
That being said, I think the Defender definitely has a more refined interior even from just videos (my neighbor has one; I should bug him for a rid...lol), whereas I've been in a new GX550. I've never been a G Wagon fan. Land Rover was always the ultimate vehicle for me until every single one of my friends who bought one said they were maintenance nightmares. I would also add there is almost no way Lexus is going to squander their legendary reliability. A version of this V6 twin turbo have been out 7-8 years now. I think ride is somewhat subjective so I won't comment, but what Lexus did with the GX radiator, bumpers, ride height, articulation and new KDSS I gather beats the snot out of the Defender and Land Rover which is mostly still selling off of their 1980s rep (kind of like what Rolex does).
I like the front grille……they should put that on all the vehicles. And it has a Twinkie tray ! The “tilt” on the third row was hysterical 😂
Twinkie tray?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lexus cars are far better build than Mercedes, by far.
When my Mercedes GLE AMG 63s fails 😂
I’ll look a Lexus LX or GX.
@racebannon2332 That mercedes will fail soon. I hate German cars because of their reliability
@@ABC-nv8ly lol 😂
I’ve owned numerous luxury vehicles and the Toyota/Lexus models (majority) are more reliable however if you keep up with simple maintenance, Mercedes/Porsche last for years.
Drive what you enjoy & what you can afford. There is nothing in the Lexus lineup that is even close to being comparable to a performance SUV.
@@racebannon2332your buying a Lexus for reliability not performance. I have owned many German car before and they just fall apart even with maintenance.
@@Yoknapataphaw lol 😂 I’m fortunate to own these performances vehicles and a Lexus. Enjoy the ride
WAY BETTER than a G wagon imo!!!! G wagon is ridiculously overpriced for what you get!!!!!
It truly is, yet people still by them.
its a gwagon, but, reliable
nah
If the FJ Cruiser returns, this new shape that Toyota Lexus has will fit the FJ Cruiser really well.
I think the new LandCruiser (U.S spec) does a pretty fair job of that already. In certain trims and paint, namely the white roof ones with the round headlights. A new FJ will probably have fun roof options like a Jeep Wrangler to add to that style.
Looks like a winner, and another 40-50k sales a year for Lexus
agreed and you are right
@@mylifeislegendary942new GX is such a beautiful Boxy machine
@@kelvinlee8193 agreed
I think 36K were slated for US in 2024 and they are all spoken for already. They will be selling a ton of these for years to come. I'm waiting for the hybrid next year before I make a decision.
33k for usa
Man this looks awesome.
This is way better than previous GX. My wife had one many years ago. Wouldn't buy her another one I hated to drive it. The V8 was SLOW. Great resale though. This one I would buy. Very nice with Lexus reliability it's the winner.
It is really amazing, especially from behind the wheel.
Idk im not a big fan of square looking vehicles like these. I wish it had the box of the old one with the front grill of this one.
The features that make this GX so handsome are the cement grey paint & huge rims ❤
That Grey color is beautiful
You are so very right about that!
Wow at last massage seats!
Super job you two!!
It really surprised e! Thanks as always Tim!
This Lexus is beautiful!! I don't like how the sunroof doesn't actually open and slide back tho😅
I am loving what Lexus is doing. Some say the new models are outdated. That is what I love about them. Both Acura, and Lexus are simply, beautiful automobiles, and I have a hard time choosing between the two. 💙✌️
Good JOB Joe🔥..Happy Friday Everyone
It's definitely much chaper than a G WAGON, so price wise, this would be better and more reliable. Still 80k for an SUV is crazy.
That's top trim, Luxury+. It starts at $64K. That's not bad compared to the competition which are outrageously priced and way less reliable.
Best design of the year.
I think you may be right Kevin!
The most trusted car reviewer
Simply put: 99% of those owning G-Wagons do so for show. I think this GX invites some off-road time. Especially the Overtrail version. That's my intended future for it.
Nobody and I mean NOBODY does it like Joe and all his camera personnel.
Joe and Lori and Steve keep up the good work real true and I love the video real true 👍
This color looks so beautiful 😍
The wheel style looks odd at a certain angle but most other angles, it looks gorgeous!
Dealers are marking these up so high right now. So excited for this vehicle. Never bought a new vehicle and was going for this but I fear it’s gonna be a long while until that’s possible.
Your best bet is getting a single owner lease with low mileage and no accident history or wait for the redesign when this generation is being discounted to make way for new inventory.
@anotheruser5654
But former Vice President Biden said the economy is booming.
He wouldn't LIE to us,...would he? 😂
lmao how do you know there marked up so high? no dealer even has one available yet
@@possession3929- All the dealers are saying they will be marked 4-5k in my state. The first one arrived today and I tested it. I may get it tomm. Sleeping on it.
Very classy and rugged at same time.
Agreed
why not both. gonna keep my G wagon and get this one. 🙂
Looks better than the buck Roger's shiny robot grills on older model
10:19 I really liked this little drive around clip. Good idea!
Thank you for saying that!
The reason the rear wiper is at the bottom glass is to offer the most visibility, which is why you have a wiper to begin with. You need the most clear glass at the bottom of the glass and not at the top, to see traffic or for parking.
New GX is a homerun and miles better than the discovery and excellent rival for the defender 110 👑👑👑.better than the G class ?. answer is no but a worthy rival and can be compared . Excellent video like always
Been waiting for this video 🙌🏼 do we know when they are releasing them ?
That diaper on the rear bumper is what turns me off. I am driving the 2020 GX460. I will just wait for 2025 GX hoping they will make one clean straight rear bumper before upgrading.
Looks like a lucrative money making opportunity for someone with access to a commercial 3D printer or injection molding machine.
So much better looking than the old one. About time we are getting away from the curvy stuff.
This is so very true!
11:47 You spend 80 grand on a Lexus, but go to Taco Bell to get 2 tacos and a pepsi... to wash it down 😆
You have to save the cash somewhere!
😂 It’s still better than Maruchan ramen, but you should probably make friends with someone in OPEC for that city MPG.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Amazing review Joe.
Lexus reliability.
83k
@@anon-zk6izbetter than G wag?
@@NoHypebeastZaydepend on what you consider better. I consider a car that will last longer better and more reliable.
That color is awesome also joe the GX is similar to the 4Runner
The grey is pretty
It is one of my favorites Lexus colors.
Lovely video Joe!
I think the everything about the Lexus is better. Far better looking too imo.
That looks like a quality vehicle! Great design, Lexus quality and functionality. Full package...if you have the Benjamins to spend.
Love the GX, though not a fan if the big wheels though
I love this SUV, however I hope it's as reliable as its predecessor, and I WISH we had an option to ORDER A v8 engine if you chose that option.!!!.
This is the one Joe
Joe is a type of a guy to measure volume in twinkies instead of cubic inches
Gorgeous
6780 pounds is light for a 2024. In 2040 it will be double the weight
This is very true!
This color fits this suv so well"i like it in White"also.Great job both Lexus and Raiti's Rides.
0:40 - I didn't knew that Joe, but now I do!
Awesome man!
lexus did amazing job on this one

They knocked it out of the park!
Great minds think a like!
This has a better cockpit layout than the LX 600 … I like it … looks like a JEEP
That is one way to look at it for sure!
Idk if it looking like a jeep is a good thing lol
Looks good
The third row tilt reaction was priceless. 😂 “it sucks”
Joe great review! I hope all is well.
great review man! love your passion! im curious to what you think about the Sienna... Van vs SUV
I need help button for the tow hitch. Cover is crazy! 😂😂😂😂
It truly is!
Nice color on this Lexus.
clear coated primer is not nice. sweet ride though
Everyone would love to buy it because the next redesign will be in 2050.
Celine Dion music would play great in this SUV! The titanic song! American classic movie and song!
LOL You are hilarious!
love this!
This thing is a lot better price wise with a ton of features. Not as good but a steal for the price.
This is my second-best color for the new GX
"Earth" is simply the best
The Overtrail is the one to get, in Earth
Very nice! Its looking like a premium package 2024 Land Crusier edition trim will be priced very closely to the GX550 Overtrail! Please do a comparison vid!
This will be my next truck for sure. Early next year I’ll be in the market for one.
Not big on Toyota products but I have to admit I like the boxy exterior design.
What car brand are you big on?
Of course not, the Fiats are more your style 😂
@@racebannon2332 No Stellantis products. #TeamGermany
G-wagon is better until you consider the price and reliability😂
.. and reliability.
Just wait until the 2025 model year of G wagon where it only offers a 6 cylinder turbo then the Lexus is way better, at least from rumors that I have seen
You have the reliability data?
@@MercOne google has it
@@mmserbmmserb3871So in other words you have nothing. This a brand new Lexus product with a turbo so you don’t know what the reliability is yet. You have nothing on the G either.
😆😆 Joe is on a roll
This color looks amazing and glad they didn't go black gloss on the fender flares. Where they did go gloss black looks fine, and maybe, just maybe will hold up better than the flat black, which always fades
Nice video. I hope you show the sunroof better so people can have better idea of how big it is and if there is a bar in the middle or not.
Crazy how good the new GX is that we are comparing it to something more expensive and not even mentioning the LX.600. What does this mean for the LX then? This GX is going to be a hit no doubt.
Im in love with this truck
Luv your vids. Comparison of Sequoia TRD Pro and the GX?
I love that flat windshield ❤❤❤
I like it ,
Sounds nice too!!!
What are your favorite three row midsize suvs?
I am recieving a Guest Centric Training at a Lexus dealer right now and I saw this beauty and fell in love. I had never seen it and I love it very much.
It is really great looking!
The SUV I’ve been waiting for 😮
Dealers are marking them up $10-20k over MSRP and as a loyal Lexus customer, this pisses me off.
I would save some coins and just get the Landcrruiser.
I’m having trouble getting excited about a V4 hybrid engine though
Loving the color on this. They are going to sell a ton. 2 and half year wait list at my local dealer. They said if you want one come end of 2025 for one.
If reliability was not a concern with the all new 2025 Infinity QX80, I would pick it over this Lex.
Thank you Steven
I’m thinking this Lexus or the new infinity QX80 will be my next family hauler. Gonna be a tough decision.
Love it, I’m getting one.
Definitely love the Lexus GX Lexus did amazing on the new GX and love the new technology great job joe and Steven and Lexus all the way
What a Absolutely Great SUV!
This SUV renaissance by Lexus and Toyota has been incredible. The NX, RX,TX, GX, Land Cruiser, New 4Runner, and possibly a new FJ Cruiser, will be an insane lineup.
There's nothing like having a reliable vehicle. We're going to see this new GX on the road for a long time and the design is a classic.
Lexus really delivered on this GX. My only gripe is that on a full tank you only get 283 miles of total range. Looking forward to the Hybrid to come out.
They really knocked it out of the park Oliver
Best SUV from any brand in years Joe!! 10/10 grand slam out of the park for Toyota/Lexus.
Will there be PHEV version?
The old real estate lady's will be lining up for this one
😂
Exterior reminds me of Mitshubishi Pajero which is a good thing :)
I wish they would display the speed limit for the area you are in at all times. Without having to use the navigation system. My garmin nav unit has a speed limit sign on the screen indicating the speed limit at your current location without having to select a destination on the nav system. How many times have you asked yourself, what is the speed limit here?
My assessment is based on what I observed at the Auto Show in California. For comparing this SUV, I recommend examining others. To attend, both my wife and I had to pay a $30 fee, and I was particularly eager to personally see the Lexus GX due to the hype surrounding it as a large off-road SUV.
Before I outline the positives and negatives, I want to express my anticipation spanning decades for the GX to unveil a new design. However, I am disappointed with what I encountered.
Pros:
* The shape is commendable, featuring a perfect boxy design akin to competitors such as the Defender, Jeep Cherokee, and GMC.
* While the central infotainment system is not groundbreaking, it maintains consistency with other Lexus models, which is acceptable.
*
Cons:
* There are numerous drawbacks. The model I viewed exceeded $77k and lacked the ML sound system.
* The absence of a panoramic sunroof, now a standard feature in modern vehicles, detracts from the luxurious experience.
* The panoramic sunroof in the Luxury+ model is underwhelming and seems to mimic the idea from the Venza, which has been on the market for over six years.
* The quality of leather and interior falls short compared to other SUVs in the same price range. Even the Toyota Highlander boasts superior interior quality.
* The exterior feels excessively plastic, particularly upon contact with the bumper, hood, and other body panels.
* Leather quality across all trims is subpar.
* Fuel economy poses a significant issue in 2024, averaging only 17 mpg.
* Many materials exude a cheap feel, failing to deliver a luxurious experience.
* If one opts for all available options on the Lexus GX 550, it may be preferable to choose the LX 600, which offers a higher level of luxury and power.
* For a better depiction of luxury, consider examining the Infiniti QX80: th-cam.com/video/NMzD7nLQlDY/w-d-xo.html
I've been a longtime enthusiast of this SUV, but now, even surpassing $80k plus tax, it's hardly worth the investment. In 2024, there's a myriad of alternative options I've contemplated, including the Ford F150 Electric, Rivian, Cybertruck, GMC Denali AT4, Sequoia, and the Volkswagen Atlas Off-Road version, among others, boasting advanced technology and commendable qualities.
Toyota and Lexus seem to be marketing very basic vehicles under the guise of reliability. Many individuals I conversed with at the auto show shared my sentiment that the GX 550 pales in comparison to the 460 in terms of quality, feeling cheaply constructed.
It appears that TH-cam influencers may be sponsored by Toyota and Lexus, with many Toyota dealers hyping these vehicles on social media to attract buyers.
This SUV no longer epitomizes luxury, not by a long shot. If you disregard reliability and juxtapose it against brands like BMW, Audi, and Land Rover, it's disheartening to witness its decline.
Purchasing this vehicle entails enduring it for another six years solely to mitigate depreciation, while numerous other automakers are already introducing superior and more advanced technology.
At present, I must explore alternative options, as this SUV is not worth $85k out of the door, if you're fortunate enough.
Best wishes with your new purchase. Just bear in mind, many individuals are compensated for endorsing Toyota and Lexus brands, and I've encountered numerous instances of Toyota dealers leveraging social media to generate interest in these vehicles.
In conclusion, this is merely my perspective. Enjoy your new purchase
