Everyone is way too sensitive about everything and will treat microaggressions as grave unforgivable offenses. The evangelicals did a damn good job at preventing same sex marriage in the mid 2000's as well as one of it's fringe groups shouting "god hates fags" at soldiers funerals. The Christians also did a damn good job eliminating evolution from southern and Midwestern PUBLIC SCHOOL curriculum's. @Bruce Wayne I understand what you are saying, but despite the rise of radical left college kids Trump is president, abortion is nearly impossible in large swaths of the country and even after the the secular victory in Dover, PA evolution is taboo in many school systems and politicians are scared to death of confronting climate change. Long story short, children in college do not run the system, they can have huge impacts on the entertainment industry and advertising agencies since they are the group with the disposable income that attracts those entities. Yet beyond protesting and tweeting, they tend not to vote or care about a single topic longer than it trends. Plus the best thing about college students is that they get older, a lot of millennial's (me included) are in their mid 30's with some approaching 40. It's easy to be a self righteous radical when you are a young liberal arts student, but eventually they will grow up and either move towards the center and become gainfully employed or a creepy old person who is always broke and no one takes seriously. However, the right has remained cohesive and just crazy enough to get what they want done but not crazy enough to show their true colors. That's why they are so dangerous.

The comedians are saying, if you don't agree or feel uncomfortable with what we say, walk out. One is prevention and the other is intervention. The biggest problem that I see is that we have gate keepers for the University circuit rather than simply posting the subjects that will be talked about, and let the seats speak for themselves.

The N word carries massive historical baggage, joking about Italians or Mexicans are always from a kernal of truth: the comedian is always on your side but the delivery is too 'harsh' so people loose their minds and say their offended.
      You're right, everyone has access to a platform where they can complain now. Even a great joke will offend 1 person, and then EVERYONE has to play along and make a safe space etc. to accommodate them. How do these people plan to be equipped for life outside of campus if they can't even take a joke about anything?! The faculty is actually doing the students a disservice by shielding them from everything remotely controversial. What happens when they graduate? Having dealt with them online and seen some of their philosophical ideas bandied about, I can say that they can sometimes end up being just as toxic, racist, and sexist as the bigots they purport to oppose. In my experience, casual -isms usually occur out of pure ignorance. If you approach a person who said the thing with empathy as another human being, then explain why the thing they said was wrong, the vast majority of empathetic humans would learn something new and change their behavior. Unfortunately, the SJW often starts with an insult, tells the other person to shut up because they're not a member of [protected non-privileged group] and therefore don't understand--but no, I don't have to explain it to you. Basically, they shut down conversations that need to happen for any progress to be made, are just as locked up in identity as the bigots, and do little of the work that needs to be done to advance their causes.
      This does not, of course, excuse the racists, sexists, and bigots. I just think that we need to be able to have these conversations with each other, stop retreating to our bubbles and reach out to one another as humans. This "other"ing is dangerous for our society because while we agree on at least 70% of our values, we're letting that 30% divide us so much that our government has ceased to function as it should. It used to be we could actually find our common ground and work from there. Now it's all talking past each other to see who can score the most political points. When societies cease seeing their neighbors as neighbors and start seeing them as enemies... that's when civil unrest and genocide happens.

    According to the comedian Tosh, even kids with terminal illness's in the make a wish foundation have more of a sense of humor. I'm a graduate student in materials engineering, and I think universities are great places to learn for fields like science and medicine, but gender studies has placed a stigma on the reputation of universities. For the most part I don't care how people want to live their life, but it's overbearing to demand respect and to go out of your way to censor opinions that contradict your own. Not every form of speech is protected under the 1st amendment like perjury, child pornography, and defamation, but comics should be free to make jokes. Great comedians are actually quite thick-skinned, since they deal with heckling all the time. If a routine falls through, they pick themselves back up, reassess their approach, and try something different in their next gig. I think that kind of determination is worth showcasing to people whether its in a comedy club or a university setting. Not all students at universities are like this; it's just that loud and stupid tend to mix well together, so we end up with people like flat earthers or anti-vaccination protesters.

      Those freedoms were often at the expense of others though: women, people of color, queer people. They have more of a voice than they did back then, especially with the Internet and social media able to document their grievances.

      Couldn't help seeing the irony there. This muppet is now determining what people may find offensive, yet focused his 'stand up' on his mother. As if there aren't people out there that had horrendous experiences at the hands of their mother and wouldn't feel "triggered" by his 'mom jokes'???
      As per usual, these idiots pick and choose what suits their narrative...

    I believe it was George Carlin who said, "Comedy doesn't work unless someone's getting offended."

    • @Koujoung
      @Koujoung 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eh, not really. I know of plenty of non-offensive comics who've had me completely rolling on the floor with the most nonchalant humor. I think many of these 'edgy' comedians really want to be edgy for the sake of being edgy. I've seen very few comedians who do the edge thing well. Bo Burnham does a good job for instance. Comedy is very subjective, like both the comedians featured in this video, neither of them appealed to me. Not because I found anything in their stuff offensive or unacceptable, but just because I didn';t find it appealing to my sense of humor.

      @@Koujoung Interesting take. You may be interested in this 15 minute editorial by Doug Walker (the Nostalgia Critic) on whether humour is getting more offensive, or whether we're just getting soft. (This was where I got Carlin's quote from.) See what you think:

    That line got me. "we are paying you to perform a service" I changed my mind on the topic. Just like getting hired for a corporate gig and being told the do's and dont's by them. You either accept it or go elsewhere

      Yes, but they're shackling the comedians with so many rules that the comedians can't do the "service" they're being hired for effectively.

    I do have to admit, I am thankful that there are more and more of these types of people in today's world. My kids are raised to not be overly sensitive, self centered babies and I smile at the reality that this will be their competition in the world.
