    Original Description:
    A few days ago a viewer commented that they were new to 3D printing and did not know how to connect their PC to their 3D Printer to do advanced functions! They asked for help...here it is! Here's a few ways you can communicate with your 3D Printer via USB on your PC! I go over a few ways you can do this with various software! For free, there is Pronterface! Then, if you have purchased Simplify3D, you can use the Machine Control Panel! And...if you have been thinking about using Octoprint with a Raspberry Pi someday, it has some nice tools as well! I go over the settings for the USB connection. I do not have a Mac computer...this is all done on my Windows 10 computer!

    Thanks! You saved me hours. OH, so that's why Cura won't print. I have W7 -32 and the versions of CUra that let you plug into the printer require 64 bit. Damn, I'm out of luck till I quit being such a cheap sake and get a more modern computer. Thank you for the great, helpful, well presented information. Well done my friend.

      Cura 15.04.3 (don't update!) does work over USB on my Vista 32 bit computer with the Anet A4.
      Menu File, machine settings. Select the COM port and baudrate (COM4, 115200 for me).
      Click on Ok. Click on the second icon on the top, left of the platform view= print with USB.
      It prints the G-code, sliced of the object that is loaded on the platform.

    I actually use cura all the time and it has a pronterface type controller. I've been using an older version of cura, 15.4 I think, and it has that option to manually control my printrbot.

      I haven't used the new version very much, it freezes when I try and print, but the version 15.04.4 and it has an option to use pronterface ui and I'm a fan of it! I'll double check the new version and see what I can find

    I had watched Chuck Hellebuyck's videos on assembling, tweaking, n upgrading the ebay CTC printer...which I have. I am also a nooby noob noob noobing my nooby way into this hobby. So, I got in touch with Chuck and asked him how I could go about running the CTC without having to use an SD card and the printer's accompanying LCD, what software'd be necessary, etc. [I did mention that I'm a noob, right? OK.]
    He was kind enough to link me to this video. Thanks!

      That's very nice of him to do that. (Thanks Chuck) And don't feel bad about being a Noob...we ALL start out as new guys and slowly gain the skills to learn. I like helping noobs and hope you can do the same for fellow new guys as your skill set rises!

    • @ego73

      Oh, without a doubt! I've already looked into tutorials for programming C++ for Arduino. Owning n effectively operating 3d printer is just one aspect of a hobby I've chosen: robotics. There are several other 2-axis n 3-axis machines I can build using 3d printed parts, and I could do with learning to use Autodesk/Solidworks/Sketchup to add to my list of hobby skills. Your video helps in that shows me the 3d printing workflow via USB instead of mucking about with LCD menus n SD cards [It just doesn't seem as fun as operating straight from a laptop and FUN is what hobbies are all about].
      Live well. Be well. Thanks again.

    Hi there I have designed a pro type and if it’s at 3d Pinter stage. So if worth’s is could then it’s deed in the watcher because of the industry machines need and work people. We’re as the 3d prints can do the same job perfectly every time but how would you connect multi printers to run exactly the same time Avery times 🤔🙈

    I've got an MKS Gen L 1.0, and I've seen people use it with a Pi running OctoPi/OctoPrint/Klipper , however similar to your EZABL setup, I'd like to just use the MKS board to control a stepper motor for a non-3d-printer application (no g-code).
    Any thoughts on a GUI that could be used for this purpose? The applications I've seen all seem geared for 3d-printing, not so much debug/test (Simplify3d, slic3r, ideamaker, cura).

    I run my Arduino based printer from simplify3d on my pc. I want to add a camera to take pictures for every new layer. So I was thinking about adding raspberry pi, connect the camera to it, then from octoprint on the pi I can control triggering the camera and sending the gcode line by line to the Arduino. But I'm now asking if this can be done through simplify3d without the raspberry pi? The problem is that simplify3d is not Open Source. What would you recommend?

    • @WhereNerdyisCool
      @WhereNerdyisCool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the Octoprint server can replace all of that! The Pi, configured with Octoprint, connects to the printer via USB. The webcam connects as well, then you can set how the recording is done. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy! Give it a try!

    I ended up having to use PronterFace with my new MP Mini Delta when the micro SD card that came with it became corrupted - and none of the other micro SC cards I had would work with it. (I am returning the delta and getting an Ender 3). The problem I had with delta and Pronterface was while it would pump out a print OK...the first couple of layers were pushing into the bed too hard. It would go through the self leveling routine fine but then pressing too hard after it started. Any Z axis tips would be greatly appreciated.

    • @WhereNerdyisCool
      @WhereNerdyisCool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try Repetier Host or even Cura. It sounds like your bed leveling needs to come up a smidge

    • @TheFieldLab
      @TheFieldLab 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks...will try that if I have problems with the Ender 3 when it arrives - the mini delta gets returned today. I am using Cura for the slicing put couldn't get it print directly which is why I tried pronterface. The weird thing was, the printer worked perfectly when I ran the g code off the sd card but once the card got corrupted, the exact same file went wonky at the beginning when using pronterface. Sure would be nice if this hobby was a little more plug and play.

    • @WhereNerdyisCool

      @@TheFieldLab well the cost for out of the box/works quickly has a cost... Ultimaker, Raise3D and higher end printers like that do give you that experience but are much more expensive. These cheaper printers entice us with their low cost but not everyone has a good first time experience with them...largely due to the lack of support. We're at an interesting time in 3D printing...people adore these cheap printers knowing they have to rely on Facebook/Social media for support and pretty much have to upgrade/replace components to get quality prints!

    I have a XYZ da Vinci 2.0 A duo ( I got it for free). I know nothing about 3d printers but I thought I could learn on this. I downloaded all the software for it but my problem is that my computer will not connect to printer. I have it plugged into my computer and it recognizes it in the Devices and Printers control panel section. I click on the printer and get to the printer screen to see what's printing and the option to stop the printing and all that. I then click to try and connect to it and it will not. So my question is what am I doing wrong? I did some research and found that I may need a FTDI Driver to actually connect to it. Is this necessary?

    Hello! I just added an E3V6 hotend to my monoprice mini V1, and I updated the firmware. Now I am trying to run a couple of commands to my Monoprice from Pronterface, but, I am having a REAL hard time finding the Com port, and I cannot connect. I have tried both on my Mac, but, also on a PC laptop running Windows 8.1. When I launch Pronterface on the Mac and the PC, the Port window is blank (on both), and I just have no idea how to find the information to type in.. I had thought I found it at times, but, so far, no luck. Any chance you can help guide me to find the right port that I plug the USB into to my monoprice? I know the ports all work on the Mac and the PC. THANKS!!!

      In Device Manger, Under Ports, it should be listed. You can get to Device Manager a few ways...easiest is the Search Box in your System Tray (near the Start Button) Start typing Device Manager and it should show up!

      Thanks! It worked out! Just got 1 more question... When I 'Home' my genuine E3DV6 hot end, it ends up about 3MM off the front left corner of the bed. Basically, the same as place as the factory setting, but, about 3MM off the front of the bed now). I can move the hot end into the right position (using on the pronterface interface) - is there a way I can move the hot end into the desired place on the bed that I would like it to 'home' to, and then upload a command (followed by M500) to save that desired position as the 'new default' location when hitting the 'Home' button? Is it possible to do that way? Or, do you know a pronterface command to upload (followed by M500), to make the E3Dv6 home on the left corner? Basically, 'fixing' the homing positioning with the offset (through pronterface), and saving it in the firmware so that it then homes on the left front corner of the bed again?

In Cura I get a "Cannot Slice" error. In the others I can see the slice program running on my screen, but my printer does not move. I can't get any support from the company. Hey I just recieved my ender 3 pro today (never had a 3d printer before). I am already working on my third print but this is how I got it to print. Im using a microSD card. I downloaded the files from thingiverse. Opened cura, opened the file I download (there might be more then one I just grabbed the one that had all the pieces), then when I went to slice then it says 'save to disk' meaning the microSD. It will give you an option to eject it. Take it over to the ender 3 pro put it in. once you put it in the screen should say card inserted. go into the menu should have an option that says print from card and when you select it you will see w.e files are on that card. then select what you want printed the printer will heat up (takes like a min or two) and then goes to work.

I have access to all of this software, so can anyone tell me the best software to use, and how i can get it to print from my pc. Thanks!

      Cura is free. As is Repotier host and others. I’d suggest checking out the Ender 3 Facebook groups for some guidance! Enjoy your new printer!

      @@WhereNerdyisCool Thank you! I will make a bust of Kim Jon Un for my first print!

    Would be nice to have a video when you "can´t" connect your printer and Pronterface don´t work.
