  • Before you can run commands on your 3D printer, you first need to connect to it over USB. In this tutorial, I show you the easiest way to connect your 3D printer to your PC using Proterface. This kicks off my "10 Minute 3D Printing Tutorial" series.

    Hi, just discovered your channel. Thanks for your video, I like how you detail while keeping it easy to understand. Not everyone is able to be concise while being comprehensive. Just a basic question if you don't mind : is it possible to modify and save the E0 max temp setting via Pronterface to the EEPROM instead of going thru the hassle of compiling new firmware, Visual Studio, Arduino IE and the likes? I have 4.2.7 (32 bit) board on my Creality, bootloader is already included. I don't feel comfortable with altering G-codes and flashing process. Thanks very much in advance!

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the feedback! To answer your question, no, the max temperature is generally considered a safety feature and is not configurable via g-code. You will have to recompile to go over the default maximum. The manufacturers usually set that based on the hardware they ship with and you would need hardware modifications to go hotter (i.e. all-metal hotend).

    I think a video on setting up the ABL correctly would be very welcome as I came across so many people who were having problems, they set it up ok but when they printed after a power cycle the nozzle crashed into the bed and possibly indicating the z offset had not saved, some people said that homing the Z had a secondary function of saving the Z offset to EPROM, I asked Comgrow how to save the Z offset and they told me to "Print the repair file" they did not tell me where this file was located and I could not find this on the included SD card.

    So how do I get the printer to save a Z offset as a default? I don't have a BLTouch or any other kind of auto bed leveling, but I have measured the bed with a 0.2mm feeler gauge but not matter what I do the Z offset when I start a print IS NOT 0.2mm like I keep trying to set it either in Cura or saving the Z offset on the printer.

  • @AndrewAHayes
    @AndrewAHayes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Kris, I have just bought an Ender 5 Plus and have just received replacement leadscrews and smooth rods for ones that came with the printer bent like snakes, during my investigations I came across loads of people whose nozzle crashed into the bed while setting up ABL, from what I can gather the Z offset is not saving to the EPROM automatically and I think the Z Home button can be used to save this setting to the EPROM before using ABL in a print.
    Am I correct in my thinking?

For instance, say I am a "master at gcode" and just want to send commands through the terminal of presliced models, how would i do this after connecting my computer to the printer?

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! You'll need some sort of terminal software. The simplest for Windows would be a utility like Putty. I also have a video on Pronterface which is heavier than Putty.
      You can also connect a Raspberry Pi to your printer using OctoPi.

    • @0o0o00o00000
      @0o0o00o00000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kerseyfabs thank you for the reply. Those are 3rd party. I’ll rephrase my question. I very familiar with the terminal and not so familiar with interfacing with a 3d printer and would like to send commands to my printer at the lowest level possible (I.e. sending commands through the terminal in Linux). Are you familiar with how these 3rd party softwares interface directly with the printer? For example, how pronter allows you to send commands in what looks like a chat window directly to the printer.

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alright, so low level. From a low-level perspective, the printer is just providing a serial terminal. From a programming perspective, you would have to open a serial terminal at the right speed and settings and then send a receive commands using standard text IO. Various languages make this possible. From a scripting perspective, it would be relatively easy to do this with Python. I've coded serial communications in C.

    The Ender5+ documentation and other forum discussions mention not to connect the printer to the computer directly b/c any time the computer does something, like screen saver or sleep, it will stop the printing process. Does using your solution here, checking/verifying the com port, etc. prevent this?
    If we select the correct COM, Baud, etc., can we use the computer in parallel while the printer is printing? I don't know much about the inner workings of the computer, tho good to know, but it seems ancient thinking to be unable to simply hook up the computer to a 3D printer directly and use it like any of my paper printers. Is this due to a lack of memory in the printers and they must use the memory in the computer?
    You mention installing the drivers for the printer. I have not done that as yet. Is this like "add printer" in the devices icon in Win10?
    Good video. Thank you very much.

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So there are two main ways you can print to a 3D printer. 1) The printer can print directly from an SD card (local storage) that is in the printer to read the file. This is extremely reliable because then the printer is autonomous and can read the file until complete. 2) You can feed commands (G-code) to the printer over USB from a PC or, in a similar fashion, a Raspberry Pi. If you feed it from a PC, you are subject to the computer's schedule. What happens if the computer auto-updates and reboots? What happens if the computer decides its idle and goes to sleep?
      Unlike a paper printer which sends the file and it completes printing in seconds, 3D prints can take days sometimes. This means the PC also has to be uninterrupted for the entire time if you're printing directly. You can use an add-on device such as a Raspberry Pi with OctoPi installed for similar functionality of a paper printer where you can send the file over the network and then the printer will go until complete.
      I hope this helps clear things up.

      Very reasonable and thank you.

The E5+ has a large bed so I cannot use a generic Ender printer driver. The documentation I got from Ender (youtube) is in written Chinese with some English subtitles and no spoken English.
      Is adding a 3D print driver like a new paper printer where I use "Add Printer" so I can access the functionality of the printer for my Word Document or is there some other process to add a printer driver to a separate computer for designing the objects? TYA

    Hi, so I have a problem regarding the connection between my printer and pronterface. When I plug my computer in to the printer, my computer knows it’s connected(I checked through device manager) and I also know I have the right drivers installed. Even with all this, pronterface doesn’t give me the option to choose a COM port, the only option it has is ‘none’ and no matter what I do I just can’t seem to get the two devices to connect. I double checked that I didn’t have cura open and the only other reason I could think of as to why they aren’t connecting is that I might be using a usb cable specifically made for charging, and not data sharing. Anyway I just wanted to see if you could help me at all, but regardless you did a great job with the video and it was crystal clear to follow the instructions. Good job, keep it up.

      You mean the extra power coming from the USB port? It doesn't damage any of the boards I've ever seen. It will power most of them though if left plugged in after you power down the printer. This is important if you turn off your printer and can't figure out why the display is still on.

      This allows you direct commands to your printer while connected via a USB cable. It primarily useful for settings and running tests. I don't recommend it for prints because computers are notorious for sleeping/rebooting/crashing when you least expect it.
      OctoPrint is a dedicated Raspberry Pi (normally) that sits there, connected to your printer, and awaits commands, controls prints, and allows for monitoring of the process. OctoPrint can be always on and always available without tying up a multi-use system.

      That probably means you don't have the right driver installed. Depending on your printer, I hope it would have been included.

      Unfortunately, that's not a lot of information to go on. Do you have more details?

    I have an Artillery Sidewinder X1 V4 and this video was useless. Pronterface doesn't recognize my printer and there aren't any drivers on their site.

    Great for a FDM, not too helpful for resin printers. Bummer.

      Resin printers work completely different and don't have G-code. You won't be debugging a resin printer this way.
