Many of these games were ported across to home micros such as the ZX Spectrum, MSX, Amstrad CPC, even NES... but sometimes, things didn't turn out as well as everyone had hoped.

I owned a Hard Drivin’ cockpit for a few years back in the early 2010’s. It was an awesome bit of kit which I still regret selling, so it was nice to see that footage of the arcade version.
Enjoyed the rest of the video too, although I was shocked at how poor some of those C64 conversions were. As a Spectrum owner back in the 1980s, the C64 boys were always bragging about how superior the Commodore was, and how much better its games were. At the time I believed them, and no doubt the C64 did do some things better than the Speccy. But this video belatedly made me realise there are some types of games that the former simply can’t cope with, so it was far from an undisputed victory for the C64. I wish I had known this back in the playground nearly 40 years ago!

  • @CTRIX64

Nice vid! Love the comparisons. Amazing what the original arcade programmers got from those platforms - especially with the "nod" of 1-frame output (that is, 1 frame of movement per screen refresh). Porting those effects to home computers without the dedicated sprite and background layers was an insane effort.... and it depended hugely on how deep your contracted programmer went with the hardware of the platform you were targeting. It's wild that some of those ports worked at all....

As a kid who started out on Pole Position in the arcade and bought most racing games for the Commodore family and later the PC, this really hit home. True. Rendered screen type games, like simulators and first/third person driving games etc, almost always perform worse on the C64 because the CPU has to do ALL the work and isn't up to the job. It's running at only 1.02mhz, after all (in the US). This is where having multi-megahertz processor comes in handy even if the overall system is not that great. It's the 2D type game, where hardware sprites and other hardware advantages can be used that does the best on the C64. Of course, a badly written 2D game can still perform bad and a well-written "3D" game can still perform great on the C64.

I read somewhere that the original developer for the C64 version of Hard Drivin' was actually coming up with some decent work given the limitations of the machine, although it was by no means a completed game. It was just taking too long, so Domark cut him adrift and gave another developer a ridiculously short time to come up with a conversion. There was no chance that there was going to be a playable game given the timeframe, and in the end the resulting C64 version never got a full release. It eventually tuned up on a driving game compilation (which was when I played it for the first (and last!) time, and I think got a budget release.

Great video! Some of my favorite arcade racers of all time are the top-down multiplayer offerings, like Ivan "Iron Man" Stewart's Super Off-Road, Super Sprint, Badlands. I absolutely adored the NES port of Super Off-Road, and it's Indy Car spiritual spin-off, Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat. Our NES Four Score and NES Advatage controllers never got so much use than with those 2 games, lol.

The Atari ST port of Hard Drivin' was fairly good. I played it a lot back in the day. I don't remember any of the ports of Outrun being very good - 8 or 16 bit. I think the best one I've played was the PC Engine version, which was capable of doing some really cool stuff for an 8 bit machine.

@10:50 the sounds being made sound almost exactly how i remember all those space guns from the poundshops i used to get when going shopping with my mum when i was like 6-7 year's old in the mid 90s. Alot of different cheap electronic toys, be it cars, lazer guns or robots ect all seemed to use the same set of prerecorded sounds on the most basic sound chip that barely rivalled that of a musical birthday card lol.

I spent most of the 80s and early 90s buying awful racing games on 8 and then 16 bit machines. I was there with Chase HQ on the spectrum with the mini ‘big’ cardboard box.
Everything changed though the day I saw Lotus Turbo Challenge in the window of Softly in Milton Keynes. Running on an Amiga they had totally nailed the frame rate and 3D effect of the road. I was in love and finally I had a racing game at home that felt as good as an arcade machine. Great music too.

Always remember the dodgy screen shots on the back of game boxes. Buggy Boy on the Amiga and ST looked spot on, but they didn’t even play as good as the Commodore 64 version. Apparently it was absolute garbage on Spectrum and Amstrad. The Commodore 64 version never got the credit it deserved. And Outrun and Turbo Outrun on Commodore 64 couldn’t be faulted.

A good example of where the right compromises were made is Pole Position on the Atari 2600. An impressive port, considering the hardware limitations. The graphics are basic but represent all the elements acceptably. The 3D effect is good. The sound effects adequate. But the key component is gameplay. It feels fast, responsive and reasonably comparable to the arcade original. It's still playable even today.
Another interesting port is Virtua Racing. The 32X version is probably the system's standout game. And the Mega Drive version is really impressive, although not worth the £70 price tag despite the custom chip and the hard work put into it.
I also loved the C64 port of Outrun. I didn't know the arcade original, back in the day, so I just accepted the C64 version for what it was. I know it gets some stick, and I can see now where it falls short, but I still think it's a really decent game.

I remember the arguments at school back in the day over which was better, the speccy or the C64. The C64 was often declared the winner after "reasoned playground discussion". But honestly, looking back now, the speccy often had the more playable versions of games, the 128K sound was good enough for most, and the resolution of the graphics was higher despite the lack of colours. I thought then the speccy was the best, and I still do now.

Hard Drivin' I have never heard of, but it looks identical to the old PC Test Run (?) series, right down to the polygons the loop is made of and the instant replay, just running on something better than a 286. Very odd. Also, seeing all these makes me realize what a miracle it was to have something like F-Zero at launch for the SNES. Very glad I spent many hours of my (older) childhood playing that and not any of these.

Hard Driving reminds me an old DOS game I used to play back in the late 80s/early 90s called Stunts. Graphics were consistent with games during that era though it was highly replayable because there is a track editor, and I used to share my replays with my friends. I think at one time we were just trying to smash the car against and object and see how we can cause it to glitch and make the car fly as high as possible.
Too bad it only allows head to head racing with only one AI compared to Hard Driving but I would waste countless hours seeing how I can break the game.

Oh man, I thought the SNES version of Hard Drivin was choppy and bad. I had no idea a Commie 64 version was even attempted. Truly a case of a game being released too early. It would have been a perfect candidate for one of the various SNES coprocessors, especially the FX. It would be really neat to see Atari do full remasters of their early 3D arcade games even though the people wearing that name now aren't the same ones that made the games in the first place.

Outrun was butchered on the Amiga, the Atari ST was good like the developers in them days would put all their efforts in on platform and couldn’t be bothered putting in the same effort in the rest, like they just wanted to move onto the next game

    • @ressljs
      @ressljs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For the sake of protecting your childhood memories, I'd recommend not going back and playing Outrun again. My experience with replaying the games of my childhood is that 2D games can still be quite fun. But the 3D games that were pushing the hardware beyond what they were built for have become really unplayable. Back in the 80's, the novelty and the knowledge that it was as good as you were going to get at home helped mask the shortcomings. But playing them now, all that will be gone and you'll be left wondering what mental deficiencies you had as a child that allowed you to enjoy such trash.

So, the thing is that the C64 wasn't all that much slower than the Spectrum. Sure, the C64 has a slower clock, but the Z80 required more clock cycles per instruction. The problem is that anything that required you to write to memory was slow, because on the C64, _all_ memory was contended. You couldn't, say, have hot and cold parts of the code, depending on which banks you were dealing with because the VIC-II contended with _everything_! Really, the saving grace of the Spectrum was, for its flaws, the clever design of the ULA.
