oh boy, I wish this video never ended. The playlist I use to work is a mix of: Hang On, Space Harries, Outrun and After Burner, I really like SEGA's golden age.

Outrun is in my top 10 greatest games of all time. I still remember the first time I played it. The game stuck with me so I was excited when they released an arcade perfect version for the Saturn. I still listen to the soundtrack often to this day.
Even when Hang On was surpassed by more advanced games, I still wanted to get on that bike. Good times!
It has become a classic, that's for sure :)

@@djangosouthwest6043 me too, i couldn't really play it at all but i remember my dad lifting me on it and standing by to watch that i didnt fall, so i could pretend to play during the attract mode. Sadly when i was old enough to play, they had replaced the bike model for the upright one.

OutRun is an absolute work of art, from music to feel to art, and this retrospective absolutely lives up to it- and even covers two other classics to boot!

Words can´t describe the fun i´ve had with SEGA´s arcade games. The graphics, gameplay and foremost the soundtracks are unforgettable.
I haven't stopped playing any of these games as of 2023 and don't plan to. Awesome video as always, about one of my favorite periods of videogaming, the wonders of scaling in SEGA arcades.
Yep, I smashed the like button like it was 1987 again. Those emerging times were magical, because they had to work with little resources and still managed to crank out all these hits that we still talk about 36 years later.
But there was no like button in 1987.
Once again the production value of this seemingly surpasses any big-name TV release. Man, this is so good. I love these documentaries. Keep it up!
Everyone should like and share this guy's videos. He deserves more attention for how much work he puts into this content. (especially the Castlevania documentary WOW)

I really liked how you tied all of those games together. I remember playing Outrun on Sega as a kid and it’s soundtrack still inspires me to this day.
The authors of this channel constantly push out amazing content! The production quality is off the charts! with writing and narration to match! The research involved is also immaculate. It seems each video takes roughly 4 months to develop but I much rather prefer this level of quality and research instead of the rushed weekly videos that other channels chase to try to match the algorithm. It's just so nice to see a video that isn't filled with inaccurate research, lack of sources, grammatical errors, and more. Keep it up, your content is absolutely top tier!
Completely agree. Produce great videos at their own pace rather than chase a deadline, (which gamers know destroys good games) and that makes me look forward to new videos than it does on other channels that churn them out where I pick and choose what I watch.

I was a kid when I played these games. What a real special time that was, no internet to spoil, you'd walk down the street and new games were there.
Some days, the right video finds you at the right time. Another day in paradise with this channel.

I love the use of Virtua Cop music in this video, haha. Great stuff as always! OutRun in particular is one of my all-time favs. I remember seeing the motorized cabinet of it and Hang-On in arcades and was always impressed by how immersive they made the games feel. I'd love to try a real moving cabinet again.

Outrun is my favorite arcade driving game. It's perfect in every way, and was super avant-garde. Yu Suzuki and the SEGA team did some amazing wizardry to pull this one off. Salute. You guys will remain as legends in the classic arcade gaming fraternity, and no doubt inspired many a modern arcade racing game!

I remember playing Outrun and Hang On as a kid, maybe as an 8 year old, at Chuck E Cheese- those games were 'better' than the other arcade games from the time. And the fact you got to ride on a life size racing motorcycle was pretty mind blowing. And who could forget the full size Afterburner? Those games had 'staying' power as well, as some arcades kept them around well into the early part of the final stage Arcade renovation/refurbishment era from the early 90s which deleted the 'look' of the 70s and 80s arcades for a cleaner, "family fun" center look. Thanks for the outstanding historical recap and video!

Original Outrun arcade machine i got to try out during my Japan trip in 2018 and enjoyed the experience.
Super-Hang on, Space Harrier and Outrun will always be great timeless classics.
As soon as I press play on any video of this channel I'm glued to the screen until the end, even when it's about games that I never cared about.
I never noticed that that outrun car sprites are just mirrored when the car turns left (mirrored right turn - see the logo and license plate)! Now I can never unsee it again! 😳
Hang On and Out Run are fun to play. Looking forward to the next one.

Great video as always! I haven’t always commented, but the quality as a whole is hard for other creators to match with the citations and real footage from development for example. I still can’t believe there aren’t more subs, I’ve told everyone I know.
These stories are always so inspiring! I had no idea Space Harrier was supposed to be the original After Burner.
Being born in the late 80's in a country without a lot of arcades I always felt like a missed out on the arcade phenomena of the 80's and 90's, like Hang On and Space Harrier. But I remember the first time I played Shenmue on the Dreamcast I was really exited to get a chance to play them at least in a simulated version of those japanese arcades I had read so much about. It was a cool experiance. Love the video as always, fantastic work!

Sega arcade games seem to carry this aura of brightly colored confidence but is intoxicating. Few companies could pull off what they did in the 80s.
I wonder what Sega could've become if they didn't make so many stupid business choices. Nothing better than playing a Sega arcade game
@@ncapone87 And it's a little sad because how many of these small town hero stories are left in the industry today? Now it's all board rooms and investors. Product placements and the cheapest development teams. There is still incredible titles but I'm struggling to find the heart you see in the games Strafefox covers.

An absolutely outstanding and informative episode -- yet again. A suitable treatment to some of the greatest and most important 80s videogames ever. This channel should put certain other high profile channels out there (naming no names, ahem) to shame.

Wow...this was absolutely incredible Splash Wave. I remember the very first time I saw Space Harrier in the arcades...I was absolutely mesmerized (1987, I think). I remember wanting so badly to have that experience on my Master System or Nes...
When the Sega Genesis launched in 1989 with Space Harrier II...I knew I had to have it. I got my Genesis in 1989 with Altered Beast, Ghouls n' Ghosts, and Space Harrier II. While Space Harrier for the Genesis didn't quite reach the arcade version it was decent for the year. At least it made me good enough to beat Space Harrier in the arcades with 2 credits. Great content!

Hang On racing theme owes a lot to 1973 Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, later re-released as the film soundtrack of The Exorcist.
