  • What does the redemption of Cyberpunk 2077 actually look like? In this documentary, GameSpot follows developer CD PROJEKT RED as they launch Cyberpunk’s latest expansion, Phantom Liberty.
We interview roughly a dozen developers on the difficult launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the changes the studio underwent afterward, and how all that has led to Phantom Liberty. We were embedded in the studio during launch so we were able to capture the raw emotions of what it’s like to launch a AAA video game. As fans of CD PROJEKT RED and their work, we wanted to get an inside perspective on one of the biggest studios, and one of the most controversial releases of all time.

Well let's not pretend like they didn't release a completely broken game initially, and happily took people's money for it. I'm not saying they didn't redeem themselves because they definitely did, but they also deserved the hate they received initially. They knew what they were releasing, and they didn't have a choice but to redeem the game.

Not sure why you're using "fanboy" in this context. It's possible to have enjoyed Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk and not get foamy around the mouth, if someone has a negative opinion of either of these games.

@@paja13 I remember REALLY not enjoying my first couple of hours of witcher 3, attempting to play the game and also dropping it twice. And two years later I picked it up again because I thought "I must be missing something" and somehow the third time was a charm and it was one of the best gaming experience I've had.
Again, it's no excuse but I think you're not alone in not enjoying Witcher 3 because somehow its greatness doesn't come through in the first hours. (Though 20 hours just seems like it's really not your jam and I won't be telling you to try again.)
Weird thing is, I don't even know what it is exactly that makes the first couple hours of the witcher 3 so underwhelming for many players.
Cyberpunk was entirely different for me. It was to some degree disapointing because it was not "as advertised" but I also have a tendency to take things as they are instead of being turned off by what something is NOT. So in the end, I also had a very good time with the game around launch.
I think a lot of players prevent themselves from enjoying something because of this or that design decision. As an example, for me it seems so silly to dismiss a game because it's third person or because it's NOT third person. And I'm like "m****f******r just play the game!" Don't skip it just because it isn't exactly like the other thing you really like.

The main problem was with forecasting the production time and lining it up with marketing campaign. The hype was was way too big and the game still needed a year to be finished. The problem was that the stock was sky high due to the hype and investors would not accept another delay again. I actually think that one of the reasons the game was fixed is that CDPR has only one other IP and with Cyberpunk being dumped there was a chance the company would either have to be sold or they would need to release as many Witcher related games as possible very soon while their Witcher mobile game wasn't a success, so they had no choice but to be stuck with fixing Cyberpunk. They puled off a miracle and many things were against them. There was the huge hack they experienced and then Witcher 3 Next Gen version was being made in Ukraine when the war broke out. I think it was right that the remaining founding CEO stepped down as well. They went too big without needed experience.

Thank you for this documentary. As a player who loved the game on PC since day one, this might sound cheesy, but this documentary made me emotional, because I was always rooting for this game. When I completed it, it became my all time favorite game. It was always playable on PC, but on day one, it was missing some features like water physics, getting out of vehicle physics, etc, but going through the quests, the gigs, even the ncpd scanner hustles let me know that the game has so many great stories and messages to tell and despite missing some features at that time, I fell in love with the game and its strengths greatly outweighed the missing or weak features like the police system, vehicle combat, etc. To me, the game was always so much more than those things. I didn't stop playing since day one so I experienced how it improved every time a big patch dropped and honestly, it was a wonderful experience because it was like there was always something new to the game. It kinda became like a live service game for almost 3 years. I can say so much more about this game but this will be a wall of text so I'll just say that I've played so many great games including The Witcher 3, but no other game have moved me as emotionally as much as Cyberpunk 2077 did. This game is home to me.

This just proves that the problem was purely with their upper managment, Ok the pandemic that shall not be named affected everyone, but 2077 was in dev for a lot longer than that. And it sounds like there was 0 managment on the game, they just left the devs to work in their little bubbles and hoped they would be able to smooth out the problems at the end.
The "siloing" of devs, and the story of how devs would just make a new shader when needed instead of finding one that was likely already made by someone else is just a clear demonstation of a lack of managment.
And you can see that after they got their pipelines and workflows in place they can make a genuinely amazing title with PL, everything in PL was so much tighter and had so many layers of depth under it, which you can really notice if you look at the non main story side of cyberpunk's world.

Upper managment needs to have a relatively tight rein on the dev team otherwise you end up in situations like Anthem, where the lack of clear direction results in the game being remade from the ground up again and again, until someone else stepped in and gave them the direction needed.
Then relying on "Bioware Magic" to get the game across the finish line, with the promise to the community that they "will fix it in post", all the while the devs who have made multiple games at this point have to go into hypercrunch to get any of their work to be seen.
Sound familiar? From what people like Jason Schrier have said its almost word for word what happened with 2077

That’s not the entire studio and the story of failed game launches are only told through the eyes of the people he spoke to…not the studio at large. It is very easy to blame one thing or one group of people for all the issues, it is far more likely that there were numerous issues with cp2077’s development and not just management. Just blaming only management (who have a tough job themselves btw) is just lazy journalism.

This game is truly a masterpiece at this point, the main story is incredible and honestly always was even at launch, now with the 2.0 update and the addition of Phantom Liberty it takes storytelling to a whole new level, the emotions and acting that are in this game truly feel unequaled by any other game currently out, as well as the deep understanding of Cyberpunk and how gritty, dark, brutal, and sad the world really is and somehow focusing in on that they still shine a light on the humanity, beauty, and peace that we experience.
Thank you CDPR for dedicating yourself to creating such an amazing experience and I look forward to what next you have in store for us!

I work in the Agile Project Management side of Software Development and can tell you I see this every day. No matter how good or bad the decisions of the company are, underneath that there’s always just a team of awesome people trying their best to make something they’re proud of and that people love.
People often assume the technology sector is cold and solely money driven, but while there are great and not so great staff members (like in any business) overall there’s so much passion and pride in what they create.
    Awesome work team 👍

My only gripe is that they're now focusing on making Witcher 4, when they should be focusing more on Cyberpunk Orion. Cyberpunk, based on their recent earnings call is a more profitable IP for them and is seen to surpass The Witcher 3 in sales. It's also a much better game, so I hope they start focusing on Cyberpunk Orion soon because we need that sequel. I love The Witcher IP. Unlike most people, I played 1 through 3 and even read the books, but objectively speaking as an RPG Cyberpunk 2077 is a better game.

Igor’s comment at 29:15 actually sums up cyberpunk 2077, something huge that at the end leaves you feeling melancholic, knowing you cant just erase your memory and start again, because of the incredible story you just witnessed, the incredible art, the characters and the music, score and OST. Absolutely beautiful. CP2077 deserves the 10/10’s and more. My favourite game of all time.

I played first played it soon after its initial release years ago on Xbox series X and had nearly no bugs at all on my playthrough. It left a mark on me more than any game before. I played it again before any major update was released. I just started it again after Phantom Liberty and the improvements are dramatic. I am now playing through the game a fourth time. The only games that have left the same type of impact on me were Fallout 1&2, Baldur’s Gate 2 & 3, Planescape:Torment. It may be my favorite game ever.

      Fallout 1 & 2
      It was like a punch.
I have never had such immersion in a game (player's influence on events in the world - through decisions, conversations, etc.), and I have been playing since 1986. Then we had to wait a long time for something close to this GOAT.
I'm sure the guys (founders and partly owners of CDPR) played Fallout.
After all, their first success in Poland was the box edition of Baldur's Gate with translation into Polish by famous actors).

As a web dev I'm familiar with transformations of organizations from waterfall to an agile organization. I was always curious how that would work in a game development company considering the process of design, development, and launch. It seems like the best process which is familiar to me in which the collect feedback and have these strike teams find a solution. Also the one person on his laptop doing the release also sounds familiar. lol
Great to hear about what happened from the people working on it and that they still have good spirits about it after this time. I enjoyed Cyberpunk 2077 despite the bugs when it released. Playing Phantom Liberty now and I'm loving it! Thank you for your hard work, CDPR!

I absolutely love this game. I've never replayed game so many times. This was a well produced documentary. I'd love to see more documentaries like this
