    Hey everyone! Just wanted to mention a couple of things for additional context on the video:
    I chose to pronounce CD Projekt the way I did throughout the video as it's closer to how native polish speakers would pronounce the company name. However I've since discovered that some people at CDPR pronounce it the other way too so maybe there's no definitive pronunciation (and if someone does have an answer to this, let me know)!
    I also *tried* to get the names of many of the polish developers as close as possible to how they're supposed to be pronounced. I know I messed up on some of them (Marcin Iwinski probably), so sorry about that!!
    Also, I feel like I should note-- as with many of my videos, this is a recreation of my experience with the game. And for a game as controversial as Cyberpunk, you can imagine how wildly my impression of the game varied one moment to the next. So ... please be patient and watch until the end, not everything I say (about CD Projekt especially) is concurrent with the conclusion I arrive at by the end of the video.
    Other than that, please consider leaving a like, a comment, and/or sharing the video! Any bit of engagement tells the TH-cam algorithm to reccomend the video to more people.
    Alright, that's it. Thank you for being here. Enjoy!

    Interesting, so they received a sizable grant from the Polish government to develop a dynamic AI for the cities inhabitants. And pretty clearly did not deliver on that on any level... They might have decided to not focus on ai, they are free to do so. But taking millions from taxpayers on that promise is just fraudulent.

    • @MrDarrylR
      @MrDarrylR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      There's actually a lot of AI going on with pedestrians. Their walking paths will weave around one another and they'll interact with vendors and machines and seats.
      The problem is that they don't have enough variety of responses to player created chaos. They either run out of sight, or squat in place, and there's no emergent behavior. You'll never see a pedestrian run to cover, assess the situation, and then decide to run further, to stand and brush off their clothes, or to foolhardily intervene against the transgressor.
      There's another sort of peculiar AI going on with vehicles. One can follow them, and they'll sometimes swerve to avoid other stopped cars. Just not the player's vehicle. Here, too, there's something peculiar about the player's action that the AI can't cope with, as it usually can with other NPC vehicles. So there is AI. It's just unresponsive in many situations to the player.

    • @vast634
      @vast634 3 ปีที่แล้ว +120

      @@MrDarrylR All the pedestrian AI is doing is:
      -spawn somewhere in the area nearby the player
      -walk along a predefined path
      -avoid another ai with some swiveling
      -return on the path when too far or path is blocked in any way by a vehicle
      -pause walking when path crosses a road and traffic light is red
      -sometimes walk to a marked destination like a vending machine and play a animation
      -OR spawn on a premarked location and use a manually set animation pose (any NPC sitting, leaning against a railing, standing at a foodstand etc)
      Dynamic:
      -play a "cower" animation when gun is pointed at NPC
      -or run to some far way location if some danger event happened.
      And that about it. This is simplistic AI at best, that many small Indy games could implement. Its only looks decent because the game has very nice models and animations available to play out. And the designer manually placed a lot of interaction points around the map.
      Even Gothic 1, a game from 2001 wich had a big influence on CDPR had better and more interactive AI for NPCs.
      Vehicles: thats even more simplistic, barely managing to follow a predefined roadplan, stopping at the slightest roadblock that is not also ai controlled. The only reason traffic flows in the game is because the game constantly spawns and despawns vehicles. Else they would quickly all get stuck in a traffic jam.

    • @MrDarrylR
      @MrDarrylR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@vast634 For the most part, its enough to maintain the illusion, at least until the player fires a gun or lands on an NPC.
      The thing is, even that is fairly CPU taxing, as frame rates plummet with enough crowd density. I think CD PR tried to do all of it via scripting in Red Engine 4, when they should have optimized by moving the most taxing NPC routing functions into the compiled engine itself (think of the performance loss going from C++ to Javascript). There's lots of room for improvement here.

    • @vast634
      @vast634 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      @@MrDarrylR The simple pedestrian AI is (or should) be very lightweight on the CPU. Whats using frametime are the animations mostly.
      Combat AI is way taxing as it need many state updates, scans and pathfinding updates.
      They just did not put much effort into the pedestrian ai. Their implementation in Witcher 3 was even better here.

    • @MrDarrylR
      @MrDarrylR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@vast634 Witcher 3 never had the number of pedestrians as here, and its most likely a NP problem (in CS), meaning the computation rises not linearly, but with the square of pedestrians in a scene.
      I really think the problem is that for Red Engine 4, they added cutting edge real time graphics support, but are relying on the same elements for NPC AI as in Red Engine 3. It's all scripted and interpreted rather than machine code.
      For me, I never expected a GTA-like experience.
      Actually, I never expected anything, as I typically spend years away from games media, and come back to play games that intrigue me in months long spurts. I only learned CP77 existed in late December, but was a fan of the literary genre in the 80s, and came to hate the film genre (with the exception of "Strange Days") in the 90s.
      I think the artists/writers did a fine job capturing the that retrofuturistic world of the literary genre. Gameplay wise, it was no worse than Fallout 4, though the writing is bounds better. But for longevity, CD PR will really need to embrace Bethesda's approach to modders.
      But to the main point, Red Engine 4 isn't as advanced as Bethesda's Creation Engine, much less Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, in incorporating the most computationally taxing parts of NPC AI into the engine itself. There will be months spent tweaking the scripts, and I expect passable appearance but still low performance to result. That will be fine for this iteration of the franchise, but NPC AI better be a focus for development of Red Engine 5.

    The one thing that irked me a bit is how those playing on base consoles were criticized for expecting the game to run as smoothly, when the game was initially developed before the newer consoles were even a thing. I mean, we're talking about a development cycle of close to ten years. Gamers who were promised an experience on their base consoles had every right to be salty.

Several delays ended up increasing fan hype, setting the game up for failure and then Investors hammered the final nail into the coffin by pressuring for it to be released before it was consumer ready.

      @@electric.boogaloo9840 no its a setup issue. Just get some help to set it up properly. You can't just unpack a computer and turn it on. I run cyberpunk on a chromebook bought NEW for 200 usd. I use Stadia. It runs now version 1.52 something. But it's full HD and 60 fps. Sometimes you just gotta find out whats best for you. Stadia I just picked to try it out. The game collection is boring - but getting better. But I just never encountered any bugs. And if I did. Like, a hand through the wall. Which doesn't. But IF - why would that mean anything if its a rendering issue.
      I bet you spend your money on a nice graphics card without thinking about CPU, RAM and such. A graphics card won't do anything. And it also needs proper setup which many people fail to do.
      The game is up to you. It ONLY takes you by hand the first chapter. After that IT'S UP TO YOU! The so-called life path has shifted many times in my game. From Corpo to Nomad. Got a girlfriend. Nice apartment. Cars I don't care for - but could've.
      And why is everyone whining WHEN FINALLY A GAME WITHOUT MICROTRANSACTIONS!
      Here's an advice: Find some tarot cards.
      The cool thing is, if I want to be a racedriver I even got a number for that. But you MUST interact with people. It's YOUR ACTIONS that forms Your characters faith. And then the 300+rpg elements you can pick, depending on whether you want to be a hacker or a shooter.
      I think many people seriously don't know how to play this game. And they pick same choices, dresses the same (yeah, you Cloths affect people), you can go to your friends funeral OR miss it and lose contact to remaining family.
      It's an adult game. Not for kids.
      You gotta use your brain. And just ONE different pick somewhere, or shooting innocents can cost you SO much, like your girlfriend and friends.
      Right now I have 5 apartments I can move into. Guy in the video haven't even found out you can buy apartments. Even buy them makeovers.
      And the voiceacting. Best I have ever heard.

      @@electric.boogaloo9840 Maybe (not being rude here by the way) - have you tested speed and stuff? I/O speed and so on, maybe its a hardware fault from the manufacturers side. And Yes youre right, critics are great and neccessary. You are right about that. Sounds like as beast too. Your computer. But remember Intel and AMD reacts differently to games unfortunately, so it can get tricky for the softwareengineers, or texture-builders.
      I just never had those issues on my end. Its like walking in that series called Altered Carbon. And kinda funny how ONE action or whatever - changes everything. People think they have to level up - thats NOT the story. Progression is through how you interact with NPCs and your actions. Not just dialogue. Even how you dress. And all playthroughs - different ending. Its crazy game.
      This is not for you 🙂, but other players - CDPR is litterally working in 18-20 hour shifts. THATS how much they care for it. NO overpay! So, yeah.
      Okay, -
      Truth be told your computer should be able to run this smoothly, have you tried the settings and setting up Distance view, second camera and such? (Yes theres a second camera), actually - for a great cyberpunk-meme: "SO FUTURISTIC - you cant even run it", tihi.
      Try mixing the settings, and turn things on and off - sometimes it makes the whole difference. Just an advice. Remember it uses REAL raytracing - so turn that one off if you can.
      When things spawn out of nowhere - its usually textures not being loaded fast enough by the comp. so it looks funny. Ive also seen it. BUT,
      inside the clubs there ARE more people, also ironed out any lagging - at least on my side.
      Raytracing is beautiful - and the details in tis game is crazy. Just try use the monowire or something else and make a scratch. Itll be there when you come back. But litterally SCRATCHES!
      I do wish there was more destruction overall. Like in "Control". A masterpiece in my opinion - "Control" that is.
      Or you can, save the money for comp - and use cloudgaming. Its actually pretty impressive what you can do, with just an internet-connection!
      Its like netflix for movies, and spotify for games.And it works! With stable connection. You own the games too.
      But having your own comp is of course cooler, it just takes time - and its NOT CDPR tat puts it out, its their distributor. THEY should be blamed instead.
      Your comp sounds pretty good to me, so something must be wrong. The only bugs i encountered is like in all games. Not really anything.
      But, the game is far from over. It is THE ONLY thing they work on like i wrote. Which is good. AT CDPR.

But I don't think it's about the cinematic experience as much as having your choices count. In Dragon Age you can take some very major decisions based on your origin. NPCs will also often mention your background to often discredit you. Worst part is they aren't even the main character. They really don't have much of a chance of a happy ending. I believe it is possible, but it would take more money and definitely more time than it got, you see, cyberpunk development didn't began in 2012, it began AFTER cdpr was done with the witcher 3, then much like bioware's anthem, they build on rush at the last moment, wasting time on a demo for e3, spending more money on publicity and demanding the imposible with the given time to developers, forcing crunch, they knew it wasn't ready but they WANTED to release the game, with the level of ambition they were aiming for, it was simply not posible to achieve with so little time.

I was rooting for V to get that biochip out of his system throughout the campaign. The ending left me with a sense of bittersweet despair, however, felt very satisfying and in line with the rest of the world. The shards which chronicle the events and people of night city are my favorite though. I spend a lot of time collecting them and reading the lore and it's amazing how fleshed out the world is. I don't think I've enjoyed or appreciated a video game story in such depth in a while. The last one I felt this way abt was higurashi and that was a visual novel. However, yeah. There were a lot of graphical issues still and an inconsistent fps on a rtx 3050. Textures were constantly rendering before my eyes, shadows were popping up weirdly and the entire city just felt dead. It's a good game with really solid writing for its characters. But the open world just falls flat. It wasn't a deal breaker personally though, because I didn't really spend much time in the open world. Most of it was spend doing side quests, gigs etc.

    The breakdown is nice, but the game really only gave you choices that affect other people's lives, yet can't affect your own. The endings all have the same two emotional payoffs. You don't get to choose your destiny, your legacy, you don't get to choose NOT to go on the heist, you're set to get shot in the head, and for V's legacy to end at the end of the prologue. No matter what you get, or what direction you choose, ultimately it's not your story, not Vs story. It's Johnny's. Johnny gets the character arc. Johnny's backstory is explored over an entire arc while V's lasts ten minutes at the start of the game. It gave me no desire to play it through a second time when no matter what I choose, my character dies and I don't get to play at the end of the game. There's a massive city but nothing to do in it. The game hyped up through marketing couldn't meet it's promise.

    Cyberpunk 2077 seemed like it was setting itself up to fail from pretty early on, the way it's really just an FPS action game with RPG elements crudely bolted on just highlights how much they failed to deliver on the original concept.

    I've been in the same weird state of mind for the last two months after beating the game for the first time. But now during my second walkthrough (thoroughly made this time), I started to feel the feelings and great moments it gives me much outweigh the problems of the gameplay and bugs which still occur from time to time. Cyberpunk's world is empty yeah it looks nice but there's nothing to do, The world building is pretty visual in cyberpunk and isn't necessarily bad but it isn't good either. this game needed at least an extra year or two and even if the bugs weren't there it's still a badly unfinished game which is just sad

But something didn't sit well with me at that time. FYI I preorder a lot. Anyway with the patch of 1.5 the Cyberpunk 2077 is a whole another game and I can really say money well spent. Took a while for them to fix the mess they got themselves into, but now the game is solid. Not a masterpiece, but solid. The story though.... man. Cyberpunk 2077 had made me care about the characters and their development which very few games make me do these days. The main ones at least. Final verdict after patch 1.5, good game. I thought it might be like western, but in a futuristic setting, but it seems to be worse than that. Even in westerns there are heroes, who are self-serving outlaws sure, but they almost always end up saving the town or damsel in distress.
      I don't really care about esthetics, and I certainly don't care about personal glory or my legacy. I can't even pretend to care.
      Maybe I am too much of softie for game like this, but I need a little bit of epicness and romanticism. Like the open road, amazing people, cozy tavern, doing everything you can for the people you love, sacrificing yourself for the world...
      These futuristic games often feel empty and shallow to me. It's just my subjective opinion, my preference, but I have tried to find an angle, a point of view to these types of worlds so I might enjoy them, but I just can't :/

A FUCKING DECADE of development for what amounts to a 15 hour story? Ive played DLC's longer than this game. The whole game is hot garbage. To think the majority of the game is bloated gigs and crimes in progress. Go here steal this. Go here kill this. In fact, the Witcher 3 Toussaint DLC was LONGER AND MORE DETAILED THAN THE ENTIRE CYBERPUNK GAME! I was hoping for a game even 50% as good as Witcher 3 with sidequests and stories as detailed and weaving and long. But nope. This game doesnt even measure up to a Ubisoft AC game or Far Cry. Biggest gaming disappointment in my 32 years of life. 7 months later and half the perks and weapon/armor/cyberware mods still dont work also. CDPR cares more about patching money and duplication exploits and speed jumping exploits in a single player game that make it MORE fun than patching their bug filled crappy game. Whole game is a sick joke. Cdpr should only stick to Witcher games from now on. Because Witcher 3 honestly is night and day. Seems like an entirely different developer made that game. Such a shame. I did not expect to start crying at the Chapter 4 and Tragedy Part in an essay on Cyberpunk 2077 of all things. That's a first, and I'm okay with that.
    It was cathartic. A cathartic take on such a divisive video game. It's nuanced. It's honest with a heavy heart, and maybe we need that right now.

  • @TheGreenMan81

    A very passionate and thought provoking analysis. I agree and have always felt, that despite the games obvious flaws and company corruption, there is a special experience to be had here and the whole scenario is not as black and white as most people are judging it. As you've pointed out, Cyberpunk 2077 has such a rich story and some of the most brilliantly realised characters I've ever seen in a game. If you look past the glaring bugs, brain dead ai etc. the city and lore are fascinating. But the idea that the cyberpunk aesthetic literally seeped into all aspects of project is just as fascinating to behold and you do a perfect job at explaining this. Well done.

    I hope CDPR doesn't give up on this franchise. It's a mess but it's got soul. One of the few games that give named NPC's life. Every time I did a side quest for a character that had a storyline, even the ganger turned martyr and the cop who lost his pet had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
    I hope they work on the fixes, DLC's, multiplayer entry, and future titles with much more care and time than they put on this.
    Honestly speaking though, making this game have a short story is one of the worst decisions they made. The only reason that should've been an option is if this was a sequel to an already established game (video game and not the tabletop game) or an adaption of a long ass book (like Harry Potter or The Witcher, not the missions we get from the tabletop game)

  • @maxheadshot3287
    @maxheadshot3287 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    Your summary of the story sounds more interesting than the story actually is. Half of the game was like a boring interactive movie, the other half unchallenging and unimmersive gameplay. The world of night city is great, but that's pretty much all.
    Not to mention the meaningless economy and balance. But for some reason people see what they want to see, while playing Cyberpunk they suffer the same illusion like Neo before taking the pill, they won't admit that their expectations were not met, or worse, they are even happy with any kind of mediocrity and meaninglessness as long as they get glossy surfaces.

    "An introspective look into the complicated story..." "Introspection" means to examine your own inner self, not looking at a story someone else made. CD Projekt Red could make an "introspective" look at the game, but not someone else.
    "Nomad gives you a clean slate, a gearhead outrunning the law..." Being on the run from the law is the opposite of a "clean slate." A "clean slate" is starting something fresh, without being troubled by the consequences of past problems.

      You're not fun at parties, are you?
      There's nothing wrong with taking "an introspective look" at something--it means that looking at the thing causes introspection in yourself.
