  • It was tough doing this video. I meant to get it out months ago. I believe that Brittany Murphy was one of the best actors of her generation. She had so much range and depth and often made a film better because she was a part of it.
WARNING - This video very briefly discusses suicide and SA through the context of the film. You have been warned.
SIDE NOTE - I could only show a partial of this scene due to copyright. Apologies.

Brittany, Aaliyah, Heath and so many others should be here. I agree with you 100% Brittany was a gifted artist. Thank you again for another awesome comment and thank you for your support.

I always thought Brittany was the most impactful character in that movie. She was heartbreakingly terrifying. She was so underrated during her time and I think that now that she's been gone for 15 years, people are starting to reflect on her talent and genius. That same woman was Luanne Platter on King of the Hill!

@zoilalulu3798 you took the words right out of my mouth when you said "the most impactful" Brittany was the type of actor if she wanted could be a great lead, a great character actress, voice actress or supporting character. It did not matter her impact was felt. There are actors today who would kill to be as memorable as her. I'm proud to be a fan and I hope wherever she is, she is in a better place. Thank you for your beautiful comment. Have a good one!

Brittany’s role and acting in this film is seriously underrated. And Winona Ryder also did amazingly in the lead. I don’t think it is fair for Jolie to have gotten all the attention. This should have been more perceived as an ensemble cast, beyond Winona as the lead, if anything.

    • @yikesreviews
      @yikesreviews  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

@DD-nt8uj. I agree with you this film should have been perceived as an ensemble cast and to some extent it was. From a marketing standpoint it appears that this film was promoted as not only awards bait but a chance to elevate Winona Ryder or the new up and comer Angelina Jolie.
I also heard or read something from Elisabeth Moss who played Polly "Torch" Clark that the cast was split into two camps. "The Winona Ryder Camp and the Angelina Jolie Camp" off set. So there seems to be some intention on pitting these two against one another for artistic and marketing purposes.
Long story short every single cast member besides Jared Leto (just kidding) did a great job in the film. However for me Brittany outshines them all for so brief of a time she was on screen. Her passing might have colored my perception to feel this way but I don't think so.
Sorry for the long response your comment was very intriguing to me. Thank you for your support and have a good one.

@angelcitystudio Thank you for your insightful comment. I almost forgot Angelina was the daughter of a Hollywood legend and all. Her role was more showy and that is why Murphy stands out so brightly compared to Jolie to me.
She had to work with far less and capitalized on every single second she was on screen.

the evil type roles tend to be easier and funner in fact but brittany's role was vulnernable... lisa seemed one dimensional...reminded me of my brother a lot... i just know in the book, the real daisy turned her stuffed animals to face them away when she was being SA...cuz she was a child and her stuffed animals were her friends and she was ashamed..that broke my heart.

Im not surprised that Angelina won. Her character is the most twisted, evil, reckless yet fragile and mysterious of all. The way Lisa calmly and brilliantly pushes Daisy towards suicide with words and than gets destroyed by Susie's words themselves in the end. Every actress deserved to get big recognition in that movie, so Im sure it wasn't an easy decision.

@jo7433, That is the beautiful brilliance of Brittany Murphy. She could access that rawness, sorrow, and terror so well. It was too much of a role for him and he gave everything he had and it shows.

Winona Ryder was admirable in that although she played the lead and was also one of the movie's producers, she seemed to want to provide a vehicle for other young, female co-stars to shine. Usually the lead keeps most of the glory for themselves, whereas Ryder played Susanna in a way that did not overshadow other memorable characters. That was why Lisa and Daisy's characters were also able to stand out so much. If Lisa was the movie's heartbeat and adrenaline, Daisy was its dark, sad soul. It could not have been done with actresses less accomplished than Jolie and Murphy. As you say, the latter's microexpressions and the way she gets under the character's skin, have made this secondary character as immortal as many leads. Indeed, Brittany deserved a major award in her lifetime and I wish she was remembered more by the film industry.

I have not seen that picture in at least 20 years. I mostly recall it as feeling rather cruel, pointless and unpleasant. But I certainly remember this Brittany Murphy performance. So fragile, raw and vulnerable. As you put it haunting. Easily the most memorable part for me, outshining a rather stacked cast.
Also, you are spot on that she would have made a fascinating Harley Quinn. Lightly cursing at you for feeding me that notion. Never going go forget that now. As though her passing was not tragic enough already. She had already briefly shown an uncanny ability to balance a comic book tone with her small role in Sin City. Playing it almost goofy whilst overwrought and sincere. Very few performers can make that kind of thing work.

That's because it didn't have a real plot. The movie script was written from the author's diaries, and there was no real conclusion. She has commented on the fact that she was surprised that they found a way to tell a story, because she never felt like there was any closure about that time in her life.

@saxonkrautz, I 100% agree with you. Almost every single actress in this movie has either gone on to write, produce, direct, or win an award. The cast was stacked, but Brittany was something else and if the director had given her more time on screen, I'm pretty sure she would have won something. Brittany was a quiet genius who had so much to show the world. Her Harley Quinn would have been legendary.

the movie was very drawn out and Susanna's reason and story for even being in the mental hospital just feels forced there are better movies that deal with mental health way better than this movie. I agree that there are better movies regarding mental illness "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", "Francis", etc. However, what I love about Girl Interrupted is how the story uses Daisy's death to give Susanna the courage to stand against Lisa. Even though Daisy lost the battle with Lisa she gave her strength to Susanna to defy Lisa. To carry on.
I also agree with you if they focused on Daisy's character it would hit harder but I think that is the genius of Brittany. She did not need an entire movie to show her impact give her one hour or one minute and you will remember her regardless. She was just that good!

She was brilliant in Girl Interrupted, don’t say a word, sin city, spun etc. She is the real Harley Quinn is what I always say! She could’ve played Harley like no other. Nevertheless I find Hollywood kind of let her down in the end. She deserved so much more. My Beautiful Queen Brittany ❤️‍🔥🌹🌟

@rileygranderson6125 Thank you for your beautiful comment and thank you for being a fellow fan of Brittany. Hollywood very nature is to let people down. Brittany really could have done anything she wanted. Much like another beloved actor Chadwick Boseman, they both used the time they had left to make such an impact and deserved all of the awards and accolades.
I think that is what matters. Impact. What type of impact do you want to leave on the world? Brittany certainly gave her all and I respect her for that.
Thank you for your support and have a good one.

There is a video here on youtube set to Off to the Races by Lana Del Ray that consists of movie clips of Brittney and Heath. It makes it look like Joker and Harley. I think you would like it.
The channel is Lay me to sleep or lay me down to sleep…can’t quite remember, but I remember the video.
She was made to play Harley. ❤

I absolutely agree, thank you for making our opinion heard! What do you think of the last movie she acted in? Abandoned (2010), in my opinion, lacks structure and obviously shows Brittanny Murphy s unhealthy state :(

    • @yikesreviews
      @yikesreviews  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

@mchineberry, awesome name and icon by the way. Quality even if it's unappreciated at the time of it's creation always stands the test of time. There are some critics that say Brittany fell off acting wise in the later years of her life.
Life is funny some people push themselves and others to the brink and find some way to make a comeback (Robert Downey Jr. etc.) Others are not so lucky and succumb. I have not seen "Abandoned" because it was her last movie. I'm really sensitive to things like that but I'm willing to give it another try. It's on Tubi as well and I will watch it and let you know my thoughts.
Sorry for the long reply and thank you for the wonderful and insightful comment. Have a awesome weekend!

@@yikesreviews thank you so much!🩷 I agree with you!! Quality over quantity at all times! I have seen Abandoned on youtube funnily enough some months ago. I dont think Brittanny fell of acting wise with time, I just think that the particular movie Abandoned is an unhappy case of a messy movie that’s also very cliche.

This is a great analysis brother 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. I have adored Brittany Murphy since The Torklesons and loved everything else she was in.
Honestly I can’t rewatch Girl Interrupted and haven’t after her untimely {alleged} m*rder. Completely agree, she should have at least gotten a nomination for the guttural wrenching emotion she conjured up in just that moment that she was on screen.
PS, she would have been a GREAT Harley Quinn!!❤🖤🤍

@fromlissawithlove Thank you very much my sister. The Torklesons! That is a great pull. I forgot she was in that. I had to do a Google search on that one. Yeah Brittany was just great all around and she constantly seemed to be evolving in her acting craft. I had to turn off that special on her, it seemed unreal and really sad.

You may be reading into her performances. I think she was just a bit ditsy in general, but adorable. She played those parts in films because she had a lot of practice. Most film stars are highered for their looks, and she had a look that PAIS's. I mean: look at that face and body!
I think you may be confusing microexpresions with opposing or mixed expressions. Microexpressions happen too quickly to be seen by the naked eye, and I'm not sure they can be done voluntarily. Frankly, I don't see much mixed expression in her face. She just does the absent thing she is good at. It's not hard to appear absent. Appearing truly focused, concerned, empathetic, enlightened, sophisticated, etc is difficult if you aren't.

@GothberryMoo, No worries yeah Girl Interrupted is a loaded film so I completely understand. I remember seeing Brittany Murphy in the film Sin City in which she portrayed the character Shellie. When I heard her speak and the way she carried herself it reminded me so much of Harley Quinn. That role was made for her. Thanks again for your support and for the wonderful comment. Have a good one!
