This was an awesome analysis! I just finished watching this movie for the firsr time. I will say that Mrs Valerie watching Sussanne shave was necessary since she did attempt suicide. So i understand the concern
Like the video but a few points are off!! She was diagnosed with bpd, borderline personality disorder, not bipolar disorder! You also didn’t seem to touch on the points that she would see things, get flashbacks. I would’ve loved to see how you would implement that into your analysis.
She says she's diagnosed with bpd. The reference to bd is just an example of reasons women got put into psychiatric hospitals in the 60's - having a lot of ex-boyfriends. I thought it was funny & point on. Thought of my next door neighbor girl growing up. I knew something was wrong with her when we were very young - ten & she exhibited the symptoms - at 22 she got hospitalized & finally diagnosed with bd & alcoholism. Her brother had been sexually molesting her from a young age.
If you pay attention to her diagnosis, then all of the other points you made make a lot more sense - borderline personality disorder is very much associated with non-conformity (antisocial or impulsive behaviors).
This is actually my sisters account. She was so happy when she saw all your comments! Please make sure to like and subscribe for more videos! Thanks again for all those wonderful comments!
She says "It's for sleep but you can discuss it with the dr in the morning.". I worked in a residential treatment center & the patients lined up just like that at night to get their meds & if they had any issues or questions, they were told "you can discuss it with the dr in the morning.". They had to take the meds too. 50 years later - policies & routines were still very much the same as in this movie 😮
I have a lot of strong opinions about this book and the video and the topic as a whole. I never had these issues of my own I have dealt with the issue many times though my ex-girlfriend the one I have children with has a bad case of bipolar and gone in and out of hospitals multiple times and also myself going to rehab on more than one occasion for my past drug use you interact with a lot of these people cuz I learned pretty quickly that drug use and rehab goes hand-in-hand with mental health. And just like with a lot of the girls in this movie and it's like that in real life to most of them are there because they do have issues but a good chunk of them also there because they had something very bad happened to them and they just never learned how to deal with the impact of the trauma and they were either use drugs to get over that or and lots of cases act out which only kind of added to the problem.I also from my point of view look like an industry that they were trying to keep alive there may be ways to cure things such as this or help people out more but it seems like regardless of what the issue somebody was having they just tried to put the small standard out of the possibly could I was kind of looked at it that way so that I would come back and they could keep making money off of them which makes sense a lot of business do that. It's unfortunate but at the same time if they didn't pull crap like that they may not be around when you truly need them so to an extent I guess I can understand. But it's a big messy crazy world before I was first exposed to it I had very little knowledge of it and once I first had to deal with it firsthand it really blows your mind that's all I can say about it if you're not familiar with mental health or anything to do with it you may as well educate yourself because sooner or later you yourself may be faced with a situation or somebody dealing with a situation that you will not be familiar about AKA mental health cuz it really does affect the person and everyone around them but there's right ways and wrong ways to deal with it I'm sorry about this long time and I could really go on that about this forever pretty much it feels like so I will leave it at that for now
Institutions wen run by authentic caring and empathic staff who UNDERSTAND the patients MH issues are a good thing i think personally but control and manipulation isnt right or fair and is not helpful in MH.Putting ppl in the community wen the communities reject and deject some ppl with MH issues abd judge them wiout fully understanding the REAL reason behind someones MH issues bcoz like in my own personal situation the local gossip surrounding me n my issues which was STARTED by non bios who got a jeaLOUSY problem with me why i dnt know?!!! So chat lies to other s#&it chattn gossips n so it spreads worse then an imaginary flu virus amounst the paranoids!!!!
Thanks for such an outstanding analysis! It was really enjoyable to watch. Could not agree more on your takeaways from the movie.

It a good analysis but the main point is wrong: her diagnosis. She has borderline personality disorder, not bipolar disorder.
In the 1960's a woman only had to sneeze at the wrong time to be commited to a mental hospital.

magdalene sisters is also a great film...true story...back when they sent women away and locked them up if they were SAed and got pregnant

Thank you for this analysis!

My favorite movie of all time! Her dad was President Kennedy's right hand man.
