    Coins? Not coils?
    In the late 90s/early 00s, EWS replaced these (or just got their own versions) with the BRA and BYA wagons, which were a rounded design instead of this more square one. They both have the dips in the floor like this, but they run the length of the wagon instead of going across the width of it, and the BRAs have removable floors for different sized steel coils whereas the BYAs have the fixed floors. And I believe the hoods are hand operated (although loaded by a forklift). Recently there's been a Sunderland South Dock to Wolverhampton steel coil train that's hauled by a DB Cargo class 60 and is usually formed of 21 BYAs; this runs on mondays (not every monday though), and last week it was 60066 in Drax livery on a full load. Today (yesterday I guess) it was 60015 in DB Cargo red but with a small load of 8 wagons so it departed 225 minutes early and I missed its departure so didn't see it in person.
    Bachmann have done the BRAs, but not sure if they've done them branded as BYAs in 00.
    This model does look chunky, not worth the price. It looks hornby railroad quality, and very interesting that the underframe and bogies are moulded in brown plastic, not black plastic or painted black,

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha was I saying coins? That's pretty embarrassing... how did I manage that? Thanks a lot for the extra info anyway, and yeah the brown underframe is strange isn't it? Maybe some got painted brown? Maybe the real ones are so mucky they just looked like they were brown? It's a good point though, looks very strange!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    An interesting wagon, which could really come alive with some thoughtful weathering. The prototypical one you showed in the colour photograph would be a great guide to giving a realistic look. Personally, I think the thing could be ideal for surreptitious storage of small chocolate mints, stacks of Krugerrands or a selection of shotgun rounds (depending on what kind of neighbourhood you live in, I suppose...)

    Linke Hoffmann Busch (LHB) also makes the same telescopic hood wagon for West German rail operators in the 80s. As they are continental models, Roco makes them in HO scale, and it is available on either Gaugemaster or Jadlam. They are sold in 2-packs and under £60, which turns out to be slightly cheaper than this. I would really love to see a review on continental vs British telescopic hood wagons.

  • @briancooper562

    These type of wagon are used through out Europe for the transfer of steel (and aluminium) coiled sheet from steel/ aluminium works to customer. Coils from strip 3 to 25mm thick dependent on end use. The steel mills will produce a batch of coils of the same steel grade from one melt (approx 200 tonne dependent on the facility) and the coil size is dependent on the customer handling capacity. German/Italy trains going through Switzerland can be 40 wagons of this type plus other types in the train with upto 4 locomotives ( just in case they need to go over the old Gotthard route)

  • @MrBnsftrain
    @MrBnsftrain 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    These sliding hood cars are used a lot around Europe, especially through the Channel Tunnel. There are also versions of the steel coil cars with tarpaulined sides similar to how some truck trailers are, and those with only doors that slide for other freight that can't fit in a container. This sliding hood concept has not been adopted on American railroads, as we still use steel coil cars where you have to take the lid off to load and unload the coils, and many times they run without the lids.

    11:10 They actually misspelled the company name on the side. It should be "Vereinigte Tanklager und Transportmittel GmbH" (United tank farm and way of transport ltd), but on the sign they printed "Tankinger" (which doesn't make any sense). How in the world did they make such a basic error, especially for such a price.

  • @97wolffang
    @97wolffang 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Ya know what, a wagon like that, priced like that just hammers home for me why modelling modern railways would be pointless, a decent Class 66 roughly £160rrp, and buying just 10 of those wagons would more break any modelers bank account, now take into account the Class 66 IRL can easily haul 20 of those. I don't even want to think about much that a realistic rake of wagons would begin to cost.
    At least with steam era rolling stock you can get away with mixing and matching wagons as that was very typical of that era and most wagons of that era don't over the £15 mark, many more even stay under the £12 mark. Doesn't sound like mike, but it does all add up to make a huge difference.
    So yeah from this alone I can say that: Modelling the steam age is generally cheaper, nicer to look at and allows more flexibility. The modern era railways, really not so much.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, this especially is a bit much isn't it? Surprised at Dapol though - their stuff is usually pretty good value, even by today's standards. That's very true - steam era stuff generally is cheaper... but then a £12 wagon is 1/3 of the length of this... so consist-length-wise I suppose it's similar!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    • @maringarvanovic8011
      @maringarvanovic8011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true. Bachmann BR steam era wagons are nothing less than £20 to £25. Bear in mind that the average freight train from that era was at least 40 wagons then you soon go over the price of a modern train. I run both so I have a lot of experience in this. You would struggle to have more than 10 of these on most layouts.

    • @97wolffang
      @97wolffang 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maringarvanovic8011 I do see your point, however without wishing to sound disrespectful, bachmann to me seem to be a company that are an exception that reinforces the rule of what I was saying earlier, I'm not denying what you say, but I'm merely prepared to argue that bachman expensive like that because they're... well very greedy with their prices. Specially with Markups like that. Let's not forget for £30 Oxford rail sells packs of 3 wagons, and yes the Warwall flat trucks they sell are just over that individually, you still find those wagons for £30 from retailers with the additional piece of something like a Tank for that price.
      I very see bachmann products with such... "value for money" on sale in retailers.
      Again not denying what you say. This an expensive hobby all round it seems.

    • @maringarvanovic8011
      @maringarvanovic8011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we both agree that it is an expensive hobby and really should not be as bad as it is now.
      Look at a Model Rail from 8 years ago and look what a train would cost you. Modern loco plus 12 hoppers. Under £300 and if you went to Hattons it would be about £240. Same train now is over £600. That is how I price things up now, cost of the whole train. I run long trains so I have to. You take care and keep enjoying the hobby.

Having said that, this is a good model for any UK (post 1979) or even European layout (yeah HO/OO I know but I do this all the time with my ferry vans). The steel coils a great addition. When you say 'more gravity'... Gravity is a constant (32ft/s or 32ft/s/s - I can't remember which - at one Newton). There is more weight for gravity to act upon in the second Gordon's Hill test. However, consider that a bogie box wagon has twice the number of wheels which adhere to the rails and create friction as well as being less aerodynamic (due to there being a greater surface area for air resistance to act upon) than, say, a 16T mineral wagon.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When did I say 'more gravity'? I was a physics student, so that's not a term I'd tend to use... time stamp?! I've found where I said 'more momentum', but not gravity.

    I thought it was a awesome freight car. Sure it was basic but an great addition to your freight car collection in my opinion. And I look forward to seeing it on the next loco review or rolling stock review. Not worth 30 pounds though. It reminds me of the coil steel gondola cars we have on the railroad here in the United States. That car would be $41 on the US markets. American coiled steel gondola are $60. So I'd be thankful you didn't spend 43 pounds for it. Thank you for sharing and have a great week.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot my friend -yeah sure, it's worth having just because of how unusual it is - sure! $41 is pretty similar... wonder if the detail is similar??

    • @agentM1991
      @agentM1991 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamsTrains it depends on the railroad. Some liveries are more basic than others. Some could have the railroad's logo on the sides while some are painted in a single color scheme. Which in the prototype form is common on US railroads. On top of the hoods you would have some separately fitted parts. The hoods are removable allowing you to load and unload the car. So in a sense it's similar to the car you showed in this review but with a different shape.

    Steel coils, or at least the ones I’m used to see on this kind of wagons, have a hole in the center since you don’t want to bend the iron too much.
    The way the coils are placed on the model isn’t too different from real life: the idea is the same, only the shape on the car bed isn’t that nice and round; also the load is fastened, but that wouldn’t be easy to do in OO, as you pointed out.

    Hi Sam, I am brand new to the hobby and have been watching your videos to try and decide which Hornby locomotives to purchase. I have bought the Flying Scotsman set as my starter but I am looking for a top quality Hornby locomotive to buy. I have seen several types of interest via your unboxings. Correct me if I am wrong but it seems there are often several different numbers of the class by Hornby but they are not necessarily at the same level of quality as the one you reviewed unless its the exact same number you have. For example, as I look at the King Class locomotives there seem to be some that have the detail you pointed out, and others that do not, but often price alone is not a reliable guide. I live in North America so I pretty much have to buy my locomotives online and therefore can't see them in the shop first. So, simply put, is there a reliable way to tell if the Hornby locomotive you are considering buying is a high quality example of the class or not?
    Thanks so much for your kind consideration in helping me out here!

    Sam, I didn't manage to complete the story, so let me give you a sneak peak haha. This is the first paragraph. :)
    Sam sat in front of his computer, deep in thought. His mum had just barged into his room a few minutes earlier, scolding him for spending too much time on computer games. ‘Sam, you got to stop being addicted to games,’ his mother had said. ‘Your grades at school are dropping, don’t let me see you in front of the computer, or I’ll take away your model trains!’ Of course, his mother only said that last remark as a joke, but Sam took it seriously. Yes, he enjoyed a game or two once in a while, but his model engines meant the world to him. ‘Okay mum, I’ll stop playing,’ he promised meekly.

    I know that feeling of buying basic models that cost too much. Primarily the Thomas and Friends Rolling stock. Costs way more than they should but turns again Bachmann is the only one to produce them. I just wish they were better than what you get now. I would love to see some weathering on that model in the future.

    • @darren25061965
      @darren25061965 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas themed railway items are expensive due to the Licencing arrangements with the brand owner, Licence fee is 40% so product price is increased to make them viable so 60% of the price is Development, manufacture, marketing and delivery to the market, plus the manufacturers profit. Then the brand owner gets a massive 40% for doing absolutely nothing, whilst actually making more money off the products than the manufacturer. Thats the reason Hornby gave for no longer producing the product line.

    • @PennsyPappas
      @PennsyPappas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@darren25061965 oh trust me I'm all too familiar with Mattel being greedy assholes of course Thomas stuff even when new 20 years ago have always been somewhat overpriced. But now it's just gotten worse. It also doesn't help that Bachmann basically has a monopoly on the market. If the quality would go up it be worth it but I bought cattle wagons last year and the body's come off way to easy. Quality should at least match the price.

  • @jpsholland
    @jpsholland 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are measuring the gauge of the wheels wrong. You measure the inside, you should measure the outside of the flanges on the thickest part as they are tapered. The size of what you measure does say nothing about how good or bad they fit on the tracks.

    I had four when I was modelling UK N scale, and they were really impressive. This one looks an enlarged version of the N scale one... For the price, a better paint job would have been required, and the finish quite better. As is, GBP 15, sorry. I've seen Hornby railroad wagons better than this one.

    I feel like you give a smidge too much criticism for low weight of wagons and coaches. Of course modern era wagons like this one are going to be pulled by modern and healthily strong (hopefully in model form) diesels but for steam engines with less strength as models that could pull dozens of wagons themselves for real can't get close to that with an unnecessarily heavy train
