    Interesting comment about people not being able to afford getting into the hobby.
    That person was me.
    A couple of years ago , having retired and looking for a new hobby, I had a look into building a layout.
    I was dumbfounded by the prices.
    Now I get my model fix from your videos. Cheers young man.

    Excellent thing on every Dapol OO gauge wagons : you can use other couplings than the ones of the manufacturer !
    Agreed with you on the overall evaluation. I have bought recently a bogie bolster wagon from them, ref. 4F-061-002, and it's also a nice wagon for a decent price. Bogie wagon with sprung buffers too ! GBP 25,46 at Hattons.
    They seems to get the point at Dapol to exist on the market : turbocharged quality with decent pricing. They've got a customer in France with me for their forthcoming 78xx Hall Class and Prairie, I hope they will made them like the little jewel they have done with the Mogul.
    Just one new for you : From Rails of Sheffield, Accurascale enters the OO scale steam engines domain with a 78xx Manor Class, announced for Q4 2021. Their Class 37 is already on my to-buy list !

    I still get this feeling that Britain did not get the memo that the world is using mostly bogie wagons for freight, I mean those type of rolling-stock were rare, even after WW2 (in G.B.), and only started to appear much later in larger quantities! BTW this wagon still counts "small" in the world of 4 axle wagons!

    • @robertwilloughby8050
      @robertwilloughby8050 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did get the memo for tank wagons and enclosed wagons for perishable freight - all sorted by the early 70's - but yes, everything else was (and is!) VERY old fashioned.

    • @nyvguy
      @nyvguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the loading gauge in Britain is smaller than railroad loading gauge.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TomPrickVixen
      @TomPrickVixen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nyvguy Yes i know that; (I'm a railway-engineer and we have a few ex British stuff here too; and Private railway co.-s like to buy old BR stuff cuz its cheap) it is smaller than the EU standard, (mixed trains look weird), but not a good reason; given how some wagons (like those chubby tankers, or the warwell wagon) have similar large dimensions like a regular rolling-stock; not to mention the coaches! And yes I know many factories (that has railway connection) had tight curves, but those are more like exceptions than the standards, but still for example: coal wagons were - for a long time - small 7 plank wagons...

    A lovely model. Mine's coupled between my hornby clam/rudd and my hornby seacow/sealion (can't remember which way round they are). It runs very well, although the standard tension locks are a bit long for a realistic coupling, and it likes to derail sometimes when being shunted backwards. I'll probably replace the couplings on that rake with hunt couplings in the future.
    A good choice of haulage, that heljan 58, but where's the brake van? And I don't think i've seen examples of those planked wagons ahead of the standard 21T mineral wagons at the head of the train.
    If you want rid of that dapol 73, I'd happily have a go at fixing it myself...

    Great review mukka. I like Turbots, I made a couple of kit versions some years ago... still going strong. Will have to get one or two of them. Your test train was a bit of a worry though... you had unfitted wagons on the rear of the rake and as such you should have had a brake van on the rear... just in case of a break away.
    That class 73 needs dumping at the back of the depot in a dead end siding! Who was the builder of the class 73 by the way? I have a couple of the Lima versions and they run fine!

    Yeah, the cost of model trains is a concern. As you say, it puts up a rather high barrier to entry for those who may yet only be casually interested, and these days there are so many other forms of recreation that might attract their attention instead. In my 40s I'm well below the median age in my model railroad club, yet sometimes have the odd distinction of being the most senior member present while also being the youngest one in the room. I got into the hobby (and the organization) early, during some of the last days of reasonably priced model train equipment, but few my age or younger followed.

    It seems like the 73's issues are because of the pickups. I bet you, if you have some spare brass, you could disconnect the current pickups and fashion some wiper pickups. Or you could fit a DCC decoder with a keep alive on it.
    As for the wagons, I think that you should get some more of them. The price is good, and you could use some more diesel era rolling stock.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes partly, it also has issues with the bogies not having any vertical movement, and issues in the transmission that cause the motor to be under great strain - but sure, fixing the pickups would be one of many issues solved!
