They should’ve had more development between Kait and JD, and just had the scenario play out without a choice. Showing that Kait still has strong feelings for JD after everything. Its obvious gears 4’s story had JD and Kait being in a relationship in mind, only for it to fizzle at the very beginning of 5 without any real good justification. It’s just bad story telling imo and a real shame.
It’s akin to the last Jedi. Prioritizing shocking subversion of expectations to ruin a story.
Yes that is correct, just play the scene out with no choice. We didn't need a choice when it is not going to matter. I don't think the coalition ever explained why they put the choice on the player. Let's see how they address it in gears 6.
The problem is picking one don't matter becuase in cannon del dies so there is no point of picking who

Yes this was exactly my point, so if the jd version is the true version, why give us the choice to save del anyway. the scene should have just been kait saving jd without player choice.
I think that if they make Gears 6, and you play it with Gears 5 save files, gears 6 will take that and continue the story with who survived and have them killed off by end of act one so as not to spend too much time developing the character.
I also think it’s a mistake to have a players choice at end of 5, but whatever.
Maybe Coalition has the intention to kill off a couple more main characters so it probably wouldn’t matter.
I still love the game and the franchise and I only hope that Gears 6 doesn’t disappoint me.
Thanks for the reply, remember players will have multiple save files so which one would you choose? also what if you never played gears 5, how would the story go for you? Its all a bit mass effect at this point. It will be interesting to see how TC tackle the situation going into gears 6. i just wish there was no choice in the first place. it could have been one of those great gears moments.
Most players choose JD to live but it doesnt matter because Gears 6 will have kait as protagonist again and JD or Del will appear in a cinematic and thats it. Too bad because I really liked JD story arc and I want to play as him in the next gears.
I think it would have been a more powerful moment if TC just confirmed 💯 who died and made it a moment to remember. Imagine in gears 3 if Marcus had to choose between Dom and Anya and the player decided for him. It would have ruined that moment.
Del's death is not canon since the game or the developers didn't confirm it
Most gears players say Del's death is canon, either way either JD or del has died so one of the outcomes didn't happen and we were given a choice we didn't need.
