That scene of maverick n penny flying in the P-51 at the end is actually Tom’s plane and yes that was just him n Jennifer Connelly together in his plane having a little fun lol say what u want about his personal beliefs but no one can argue that when it comes to making movies the man is a f’n LEGEND.. they don’t make em like that anymore
the plane Tom was flying at the end is his own million dollar mustang. He also has a pilot's license.
@@xwhogafx815 Yes I thought so too... 01:03 That Hot Dog grilling is from "Hot Shots!" how does not anyone notice this? Yes, Nikki it's the same font! "Serpentine" also used in "Lethal Weapon" among a lot of other 80's movies....
“They make it look so real.”
That’s because it was real. The factors may not have actually flown the planes but they were in the back seat for many of the shots.
Real pilots piloted the jets.
"They make it feel so real" that's the thing Cruise and the rest of the cast were on those jets for real, each member were professionally trained to be able to handle being inside the F-18 - underwater excercises, breathing techniques and emergency training. Cruise and his team continue to make authentic and real action films, love it.
Yes, They are sat in the backseat while profissional fighterjet pilots do the flying. 35-40% of shots i CGI tho...
That is Cruise flying his own P-51 in the end tho
@@joakimp2711 You are wrong about that. The only CGI done were the dogfights with the missiles. You need to Google and research rather than just throw out your opinion.

I like that Maverick didn't die. It was a perfect ending to Maverick's story arc. He, and his crew had a successful mission, he made up with Rooster, and ended up with Penny. Excellent movie, and a worthy sequel to the original.

I actually love Hangman's character because he's a parallel to Mav in the first movie, skilled but arrogant, and definitely not a team player. He learned his lesson at the final stretch of the movie when he was humbled and broke rules to be a team player just like Mav did.
He didn't break the rules. He was clearly told to launch and go help them. You can't launch a jet off the carrier without assistance and approval.
I actually think Hangman is a blend of Maverick and Iceman. The writers went to some effort to avoid a direct 1 to 1 to anybody from the original, except Maverick himself. Even Iceman is different, with some Viper leadership blended in. And Hangman didn't learn a thing, in my opinion. He wanted to be the hero.
And as the other responder said, you don't launch off a carrier successfully without permission. Catapults do not fire unless the cat officer in his viewing blister hits the trigger, and he/she won't do that until the deck crew signals readiness.
Hangman is such a gem of a character. You’re tricked into hating him because he’s so cocky but that’s just what Top Gun brings out of young pilots, even Maverick. And the points he makes about Rooster aren’t wrong: Rooster isn’t fast enough or level-headed enough for this mission. He’s like a megaphone for all the practical reasons Maverick should not choose Rooster.
Once the mission starts however, he’s supportive, professional, and eager to help. I love that. Best arc of the movie.
My friend and I are were both commenting on how Hangman was still on the ship when the worst was going down. No way you leave someone that talented on the deck.
@@Ladmia mission profile probably called for the min number of aircraft in the air to reduce chance of early detection. Also he was on alert-5. Would’ve made more sense for there to be two aircraft waiting to launch. But you keep them on the deck so as to not waste fuel they might need if they are needed. It did make sense he was there tho, being the best pilot not in the mission.
@@Ladmia Hangman is the Maverick from the origianl movie in this movie. Exactly the same. Same cocky attitude as original Maverick. Leaves his wingman like the original Maverick. Sits on the deck at the end waiting to join the fight like in the original movie. And then turns up at the end to save the day like Maverick in the original movie. They even have him say and have things said to him that are direct quotes from the original movie (Maverick has essentially morphed into Jester in this movie).
I like how he was fist pumping when they hit the target. He would’ve done anything to be the one to drop on the target but he was happy they pulled it off.
Glenn Powell turned down the role initially as his character didn't have that arc he just vanished from the screen when the mission started , they rewrote the redemption arc for him.
In my opinion Hangman is Maverick from the first Top Gun movie. We just see him from a different perspective in this film. The similarities are striking, from him leaving his wingman to him being placed in reserve and saving the day at the end.
To me Hangman is Val Killmer
@@donnabruhn6907 That's what I thought at first too. So attitude wise I can agree. But story arc wise he more closely matches Maverick.
Rooster is this generation’s Iceman. Maybe a bit more cautious than Ice. But Hangman is Maverick. Granted he has the skill but he’s not a team player.
Now that you mentioned it, they're strikingly similar! Why didn't I think of that?...
Because to others (& me initially) hangman's the modern-day version of iceman
Also Maverick says "You're good kid" like Viper said about Maverick during the dogfighting exercises.
That's actually Tom Cruise's P-51 and he's actually flying it at the end there.
It's a wonderful aircraft. Manufactured in Dallas, TX in 1944 as an F-6K -- a photo recon version of the P-51D -- Cruise has owned it since 2001. The colors it's painted in are of the 334th Fighter Squadron that was based in England during the War.
Yep, exactly. Its Tom Cruise's own airplane and he actually have pilot license. He did fly with that plane along with James Corden.

No sequel to a movie that is over 30 years old should be this damn spectacular! I saw this opening night in IMAX and it was one of the absolute best moviegoing experiences of my life. The sound of the jets flying by, the literal feeling of the vibrations in your seat when the G forces kick in, and especially the visuals of seeing everything from the point of view of the pilots. I legitimately believed during the final dogfight that Maverick was going to die, so few movies today make me believe that!
On top of all that, the story is so freaking amazing. The theme of showing how fighter pilots are still needed even in the age of drones, the story of Rooster learning to not just forgive Maverick (not for his father’s death but pulling his papers) but to let go of being so overly careful in his flying and “don’t think just fly”. And of course the most emotionally powerful in the movie when Maverick visits Iceman. Even though he has retired due to his throat cancer and has difficulty speaking he still managed to give an absolutely heartbreaking performance.😭😭😭😭
Thank you Tom Cruise for fighting so hard to get this movie in theaters.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
My daughter and niece (13) only agreed to see this if I took them to see the new Jurassic World first. They both said it blew all the Jurassic movies out of the water, and saw this 3 more times the next 3 weekends straight.
I can understand why they didn’t want to release it streaming it! I don’t think it would of had the same effect as it did sitting in that theater feeling the rumble of the jets. I was so emotional watching it. Overly thrilled lol one of the best sequels ever!
Seeing it in theaters was truly an experience!! Certain movies you just HAVE TO see in theaters and this was most definitely one of them! 💯🙌
The reason Rooster played on the piano was to get back at Hangman. The jukebox was playing and Hangman said ‘i love this song’ so Rooster unplugged the jukebox, but the place was full so he started playing the piano to give him a reason to do so and also kind of take the lead in the bar - it was basically the culmination of a pissing contest between Rooster and Hangman, and obviously being a navy bar he would probably make the association with his memory of his dad playing that.
Random observation and question:
When H_ngm_n selected 'Slow Ride' [by Foghat] on the jukebox, it was number 86. I wonder if this was a subtle reference to the year 1986, when the original Top Gun was released?
Just a thought. ;o)

The Maverick and Iceman scene proved that despite being rivals in the past. Iceman always had his back after Goose dead. Iceman was Maverick's wingman outside of a plane and even in his last breath was drawn Iceman always had Maverick's back later in life.
Also, one thing I love about this film. They succeed to make new characters interesting in just one movie. Rooster, Hangman, Phoenix and Payback are some of the best newcomers in this film. Hangman remind me of Iceman and his rivalry between Rooster remind of the rivalry between Iceman and Maverick. This is notalgia done right.
By the way, I am glad you guys have reacted to this film because Tom Cruise continues to show the world why he's still one of the biggest movie stars.

"it looks like he's actually flying there" Yup! Tom Cruise has been a real life pilot for 40 years and he also did all of his own flying in mission impossible fallout and American Made. He has literally every pilot's license you can have, even his airline transport certificate, helicopters, gliders, and single engine, single pilot jet license. But yes, that's actually his personal P-51 Mustang and he actually did fly Jennifer Connelly around in that last scene. He also owns a custom painted Honda-Jet which is a single pilot operated business jet and he flies that around everywhere he goes.
They held the release of this movie during Covid, until people could see it in theaters, and it was 💯 the best decision ever. It’s so good and so much fun. Bravo! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Oh yeah! As disappointing as it was they kept pushing the release date, it was absolutely the best decision. It would not have been the same emotional effect of the streamed it!
11:50 if you think about it, his last memory of his dad was sitting on top of a piano while Goose played the song, so he has a connection with it. Fun fact about this scene: Miles Teller learned to play the song, this was a live take that was so good they included it on the OST, and they edited the performance into a music video, meaning Miles Teller has an officially credited cover.
24:51 I suspect Amelia already knew Maverick was there, his bike was parked outside the front door.
I like how throughout the movie they foreshadowed Maverick potentially dying…
“Despite your best efforts, you refuse to die.”
“Someone’s not coming back from this.”
“You’ll be back in a fighter jet with your tail on fire.”
“I’m never gonna leave you again.”
“Don’t break her heart again.”
“We’ll talk, when we get back.”
“If I don’t see you again Hondo, thank you.”
But then he survived. Which means Maverick completed his mission of not losing anyone:
“Every mission has its risks, these pilots accept that.”
“I don’t, sir.”
He was prepared to sacrifice himself to make sure everyone else made it back… but him coming back too is the icing on the cake.
49:18 military personnel have more than one set of dog tags, so Goose’s family would’ve already had a set. The ones that Maverick threw were another set.
if you have a duplicate set made. i had 1 set of dog tags until we got a hold of the machine and made 3 sets of them. and they're a part of your uniform!!
@@metadeth578
You can easily get a few sets. The chain breaks and you lose them constantly. (I think the only reason I didn't lose that many even with several broken chains is because I wear bras). I've also found like 3 tags from different people in MOS school on the O-Course so it is common to lose them. Just don't piss off someone in admin and you will get them quickly.
I know a few dudes who would give one to every gal they slept with.
As folks have commented - the flying is real and they're actually flying in F18s with Top gun pilots in the front seat - The action is incredible. In addition, Tom Cruise is flying in HIS P51 Mustang at the end. The other thing that really stood out to me was the growth of Maverick as a person. In the first top gun he was all about himself. In this movie he was all about others. Saving the jobs of the crew in the beginning, Training "his" pilots so they can come home, giving up his relationship with Rooster to honor Roosters Mothers wishes as well as to Protect him, and sacrificing himself to save him during the mission. Really really well done
...and he made enough from this movie to buy another one.
_Some_ of the flying with F-18s is real, some is computer composites, some is pure CG. Anything involving the Darkstar, the Felons or the F-14 is pure CG. Any shot with the camera pointed up from between a character's feet is taken from an aircraft on the ground.
He has his own real JET,Helicopter, etc, etc, etc.
@CruelestChris the cameras were mounted in jets that were flying. They were in the backseat with actual pilots flying F-18s. They had several cameras mounted I. The cockpit. After the flight they would see if they got the shots needed or not.
“It’s what my dad would have done.” And I cried through the end credits.
That scene where Penny sees Maverick's face as he's looking into the bar at Rooster always chokes me up. 😥
It's like he's seeing a ghost and that he's actually scared. Very effective scene.
@@artboymoy It's not fear. It's remorse.
@@bmw128racer Is it remose or just plain old-fashoined pain?
Yeah, the P-51 Mustang Mav is working on, and that he flies Penny in, is his own plane which he has had a license to fly for decades. And he was flying it with Jennifer Connolly actually in the back seat at the end.
I love seeing Bob in the F-18 because we've seen the actor's dad in an F-18 too. Bob was played by Lewis Pullman whose dad Bill was the President of the U.S. in Independence Day.
Great Balls of Fire was essential for the storyline, because it shows us that Rooster has hung on to the good times with his dad and has made them good times for himself going forward as well as showing that Mav is still completely haunted by the loss. Penny's reaction to seeing him standing outside hurting as he relives that moment in his mind shows that she knows and understands him because she is aware of the trauma. That helps show that they've had a real relationship history beyond the throwaway line at the start of the original movie about him and the admiral's daughter. And Amelia's line at the window is a gut kick for Mav and the viewers. She knows he's hurt her mother, and while she's willing to give him a chance, she wants him to know in no uncertain terms how she feels.
Hangman is Maverick. Mav wasn't that bad, but that's because Maverick was trained and flew in the era when fighters were almost always two seaters, so Mav always had to be mindful of his RIO, his only remaining family, in the back seat. He occasionally slipped up and took too many risks that Goose, as his conscience, couldn't hold him back from, but he always felt responsible for Goose so he never went completely off the chain.
Hangman is Maverick without Goose's steadying influence. He's flown single seat fighters for probably his entire career, so all he's risking is himself which with his supreme self-confidence means he can do anything and survive it and it is up to his inferiors to keep up. If they don't, then it is their fault. It's nice that he grows to understand better the value of teamwork and to be a better team player, much like Maverick did with the "I'm not leaving my wingman" line at the end fight of the first movie. Seeing Hangman react with real concern for the strike team as he listened to the radio chatter was a great sign of his character development.
The actor who played Hangman tested for Rooster and lost out, but he impressed Cruise and the others so much that they expanded Hangman's role in the script for him. He was a supreme ass, but he did come in clutch at the end.
In one draft Hangman was going to be Iceman's son, but that would have been awful so I'm glad it got tossed.
he flew that p-51 with james corden on the late late show!
One small correction: 2 seat fighters weren't really the standard, the F14 was just a 2 seater. There were still things like the F16, F15, F/A-18A Legacy Hornet, and plenty of other single seaters. But Hangman is and probably always was a single seat Super Hornet pilot, whereas Maverick, being an F14 pilot, always had a RIO
@@skyraider87 You are correct, and thank you for that. I should have specified that I was referring specifically to the F-14s as the "standard" two seater shown in the first Top Gun movie, since we didn't see the others in action in that movie. A reminder that I need to be specific in what I mean! Always appreciated! 🙂
Hangman is Iceman, not Maverick. I'm surprised you didn't pick up on Hangman's Ice to Rooster's Maverick. If you watch them back to back, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Literally the old generation teaching the new generation.
@@cvonantz I can respectfully agree to disagree with you on this. There's not really an Iceman in the young pilots, and Hangman's selfishness seems to perfectly parallel Maverick's actions when he doesn't listen to Goose in the first movie. There's even a line about it from Mav along the lines of, "Leaving your wingman? Haven't seen that for a while."
Ice was always focused on being very calm, cool, and controlled. He did everything textbook and as close to perfect as he could. Hangman is nothing like that. He's a wild stick jockey who just is out to prove he's better than everyone else, no matter who he pisses off, which also sounds like a younger Maverick.
To your point I will absolutely agree that there are obvious similarities between Rooster and Mav. Both are basically orphans whose father died in a fighter and whose mother died after that. Mav feels a lot for Rooster's situation but Rooster is angry at Mav while Mav was just frustrated at not knowing what really happened to his dad. Rooster is overcautious while Mav was reckless, and the only time Rooster is reckless is when he's flying against the man he's so angry at in training, or when he's trying to save him on the mission.
It is a great movie about the old teaching the young and the growth of both old and young through that process. I've watched them back to back and unfortunately I wish I hadn't since the new movie makes the older movie pale in comparison in some ways. Don't get me wrong, I still like them both, but I just think the second is much better.
Then again that may be because I'm not the teen I was when the first came out but have somehow survived to be an old guy, and the second would appeal more to old me than teen me. 😀
@46:30 "Why does it look like he's actually flying?" That's actually Cruise's own P-51 and he is actually flying that one. Great reaction! Hugs Nikki!
He would have flown the F 18 in a couple scenes but the Navy wouldn’t allow it. But yeah Cruise is a pilot himself.

Knowing what Val Kilmer has been through, healthwise, I didn't know if he would be in this movie, but was very happy to see him.
Ice's funeral made me tear up because it reminded me of my dad's military funeral (air force).
When I saw this in theaters, I didn't realize the striking resemblance the mission had to the trench run from Star Wars.
In the beginning when you see him running on the treadmill, it's actually not just an excuse to show him exercising. I actually love that they put that in there. What it is, is when pilots have to fly at really high altitudes, like U2 pilots and test pilots for experimental aircraft like this one, they have to deal with a very thin atmosphere The suit he wears is somewhat pressurized but it can't be fully pressurized or it'll be like an inflated balloon up in the thin atmosphere and would be hard to move. And when you're in thin atmosphere like that you run the risk of the nitrogen in your blood boiling and turning into gas form. So prior to any high altitude flights, the pilots would breathe pure oxygen for like the hour or more prior and they would often exercise while doing it to get more oxygen absorbed and more nitrogen released out of their system. So that scene of him running with the oxygen mask on is actually a realistic touch. Also when you see him climbing into the cockpit of that aircraft you see one of the crew set down a box that his suit was attached to, that's an air conditioning unit to pump cooled oxygen into the suit because it's really hot inside that suit, another realistic touch. And that experimental craft, they could have just invented some thing out of thin air but they actually hired real engineers and designers from Lockheed Martin to design something that would at least be plausible for what it's supposed to be. I hate when I watch a movie and the aircraft design just doesn't make any sense and anyone at all familiar with how aircrafts work would take one look at it and be like "that won't fly..." They made sure to do their homework here. I wouldn't be at all surprised if an aircraft of that design really could do some impressive flying, lol. Maybe not mach 10, but still, haha.
Great post! Thanks.

Second, Tom Cruise refused to make the movie without including Val Kilmer in some capacity. Even with him going through throat cancer.
That's great what Tom did for Val. Makes me so sad that Val has been battling that for so long. It's amazing he's still with us (thankfully!) - throat cancer is one of the worst cancers - and just brutal to have treated.
Thanks for a great reaction video. I’ve been involved with U.S. Naval aviation for over 26-years and still am currently with them on the Super Hornet platform at a very personal level. While not absolute, Top Gun Maverick was very accurate in most ways than not with regard to the F/A-18 E/F, as well as Naval aviation and flight lingo. Just know that compared to most aviation movies, this one is not only better with the feels, it’s better with its accuracies.
Sincerely, an F-14 A/B/D guy…what a great platform that was. I’m glad I had time with them as well.
“By the way earlier today when I watched the 1986 one I did cry.”
And that was the point we all knew a box of tissues will be destroyed.
This movie is perfect and my new all time favorite movie. Saw it 3 times in the theater and another 5 times since at home. It gives you intensity, emotions, laughter and Country pride feelings. Being a Son of a Father that was in the Navy, it gets to me emotionally everytime I watch the ending as my Dad has since passed in 2001. It always makes me think of him. This movie just opened up a new wave of military recruits that want to join. Great job Jerry, Tom and Sundance films. An excellent job!
In a world of misguided sequels, sequels that weren't really needed, etc, etc. Top Gun: Maverick proves that if you have a strong cast, strong crew of people who are dedicated to the idea of the film, television show, etc, etc. Then you can make a great piece of art! And Top Gun Maverick was that piece of art!
Agreed and I hope they do not make a third.
@@BryonLape there have been talks of a third aka Miles has been talking to Tom about a third, but I agree you can't make a third one. Its completely impossible
@@logsf18 Yes, they can, by focussing on the young pilots. I would love to see a movie about Hangman and Rooster becoming best friends.
@@Stephanie-es7wv It would be cool to have a thrid but Tom has to be involved highly considering he put them on. Personally I wouldn't want a third because of one reason, which is how would they top this one? I don't think they can top it
Cobra Kai is another example of that
“Top Gun is about love. It’s always been about love.”
The singular BEST, TRUEST comment I’ve ever heard/read 😊
Val Kilmer is still one of my goddamn heroes! What an actor...so powerful without having to say a word!
I hope you have the chance if you have not seen it yet.. the Val Kilmer documentary "VAL" .. he is a brilliant actor so ahead of his time.
Val Kilmer’s best movie by far is Spartan from 2004. If you haven’t seen it. Go find it
"I'm your huckleberry "
That was Val actually speaking. They just enhanced the audio a bit.
@@audiodude74 i thought his son helped/ lent his voice to the recording.
I love how both Nikki and Steven made some very VERY great points at the end of the movie about sequels.
Tom Cruise understood and projected what he wanted for Maverick in this sequel and it is a Masterclass in how a sequel SHOULD be despite the years between the first and this movie.
One thing I would have loved is if they could have had really brief cameos of Viper, Slider, and Jester at Iceman's funeral. No talking, just pan across the people there and show them there.
Yeah, that would have been cool 👍🏻
Iceman told the Admiral to use Mavrick. That's why he gave Mavrick a hard time.
I'm glad Nikki just watched Top Gun today, so it's fresh in memory. And how badass is Penny Benjamin, owns a bar, sailboat, Porsche and is an Admirals daughter
That Porsche is a callback to Charlie, who also drove an old Porsche.
@@campagnollo right, I was living on C street at the time of filming, the scene where Kelly chases Tom down was on the B street hill. My wife and I walked over to watch them shoot it 😃
Tom Cruise owns the P-51 fighter he flew in the credits. The pilots assigned to the movie all geeked out on seeing it. When Jennifer Connelly first got on set, Tom Cruise offered to send her up, and when she strapped in, she realized that Tom was taking her up.
The shot of the Admiral (Ed Harris) withstanding the wake of the jet was a practical effect with the prototype digitaly placed over the plane they used. Ed Harris is just that legit.
Best part of that scene is I heard the roof popping off the shack was unintentional but it fit so well they left it in.
@@Vipre- Yep it wasn't planned and they could only film one take because that destroyed the set. The shot you see is the only one they filmed I believe.
I love all the easter eggs in this movie.
Penny Benjamin
86 on the Jukebox (the year of the first top gun)
Mavericks intro (Same style as the original)
"Leaving your wingman behind. There's a move I haven't seen in a while" (Throwback)
The Tomcat starting was pretty close to accurate. The F-14 did need a huffer cart to start as it has no APU.
And of course my favorite "DO SOME OF THAT PILOT SHIT, MAV!"
Such a damn good movie.
Just wanna say that this movie without even seeing the original even now lol is seriously one of my favorite movie experiences ever. I understand the nostalgia of it all because I lived through the 80s and the movie is very much of that time but still very current. Watching the action sequences on IMAX was truly spectacular. But on top of that is this incredible cast led my an unstoppable Tom Cruise; a beautiful, poignant moment with the incredible Val Kilmer; great chemistry with the lovely Jennifer Connelly; and a great young cast particularly Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Nikki's reaction was totally me the first time I saw this movie and watching her cry made me cry again lol. Great reaction guys.
Yes, absolutely. Taken for what it is - a sequel, made 35 years after the original - it _definitely is_ one of the best movies ever made.
The level of respect for older characters this movie has is amazing. Maverick and Ice Man are both treated with respect and dignity and aren’t degraded just to prop up new characters being pushed by forced. Well done Tom Cruise and the rest of the crew and cast.
If only Star Wars had respected older characters like TGM did. Oh well.
if I could give this one 2 thumbs up I would
I took my daughter to see it after making her watch the original….. she cried almost more than me YALL. Luv u guys watch your reactions to everything
My favourite scene was when Maverick ran the course. Its when the coach shows you why he is the coach. Also, Tom Cruise has a thing where in many of his movies, he will have a character named Bob.
I do love that point you made, Nikki. Everyone has told Mav to let go, and at the end of the last movie it seemed he had when he tossed Goose's dog tags. But the truth is he never did. It's not as easy as tossing something away, and the death of a true friend and brother haunts you in ways you never anticipate or realize. I love that we get to examine that, especially with Ice Man, who knew Goose and knows Mav's trauma and feelings.
I love how Steven was like 'wait for it' the whole movie 🍿🍿
Great reaction! As a former Army attack helicopter pilot with combat experience, who now flies jets, time on target is a big deal, no matter the size of target. In the moment, time slows down but you are hyper-focused on your target, you really don’t know how much time has passed. Just like Viper in the original, Warlock and Hondo are the coolest characters! I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Rooster…perfect casting! And, bird strikes are real…I’ve had many…when Rooster said you have no wife, no kids, nobody to mourn you when you burn in it hit home…I’m not married and have no kids…
I think the scene between Val and Tom was perfect. Respect for Icemans character and ULTIMATE respect for Val Kilmer.
The humour at the end relieved a pretty heartfelt scene. Audience's legit choked up during that.
My hat goes off to you man, I don't know how you kept from blurting out spoilers while your woman watched ! Ma'am, your
reactions to everything was priceless. You gave the best reactions I've seen about this movie. I've see it 7 times now and still
get teary eyed in parts. Just to let ya know all the actor pilots spent multiple hours in jet aircraft with pilots putting them
through all the G-Forces and then some. Tom Cruise is a very accomplished pilot and owns the WWII P 51 D Mustang in the
hangar ! Yes that's him and Jennifer Connelly in the Mustang flying at end of movie. For me, he's the luckiest man alive !
In the original Top Gun movie Kenny Loggins was invited to a screening and asked to write a song. He and his writing partner thought everyone everyone would try to write the title song so they elected to write the song for the volleyball scene, Playing With The Boys. Then he got a request for help with Danger Zone and now we have one of the most iconic songs in film history.
Not to mention "Footloose" too. Dude had back-to-back movie gold.
Can't watch that ending without some gremlin coming in the room and cutting onions. Every time.
Top Gun was the first VHS my family ever owned, and I watched it probably 4 times a week throughout my childhood… Top Gun Maverick hit me in the feels so hard. Absolutely perfect movie. Perfect.
I remember watching the original in Theaters when I was 8. When it came out on VHS, I was so pumped. I miss those days.
I heard all the flying scenes they did were authentic and real. I heard the actors had to go through excruciating training to be able to Pilot one of those planes.
30:42 They aren’t making it “LOOK” real Nikki, it *IS* REAL. This is all practical. They shot over 700 hours of aerial footage! I get the feeling you think it’s CGI? It’s not! That’s what makes this movie so impressive and why Tom Cruise waited so long to make it! He wanted the actors INSIDE THE cockpits filming!!
Dang 😬
Well there is some CGI usage, as there is in every movie. Basically, yes, actors are in the cockpits in the shots of them.
They had only 1 yet (f18), no f14s and obviously they couldn't get their hands on a su57. Alot of it is cgi its very seamless though
there is cgi used, but it's super practical. it's amazing!
Mostly true. There are definitely cg jet shots, the gen 5s and the darkstar are cg
In case no one has said it. Tom was flying his personal P51 mustang at the end of the movie
Steven is so right on about this movie being a Stand-Alone. I have never watched "Top Gun" or was interested in it. "MAVERICK" Blew Me the F*ck Away ! Pretty close to a Perfect movie. A lot of talented people put a lot of Work and LOVE into making this movie. The Academy Awards BETTER reward all these people next year.
I saw Top Gun twice opening day cuz they wouldn't let me and my brother (6 & 12) into see Stallone's Cobra 🤣🤣🤣
Top Gun's a good movie, but this exceeded Jurassic Park as the best movie theater experience of my life.
The Academy's lobbyists don't like him... Because he's making successes where most of the lobbyists can't...
Watch the first Top Gun. It’s classic. I remember watching it in the theater when I was 8. I’m blown away this sequel surpassed the original. I was worried it couldn’t. That’s how great the first movie was.
I've literally been watching this movie my whole life and I still cry at Goose's death. This movie was such a perfect sequel I can't even explain it, hit all the right notes and emotions it needed to and so much more
This is officially my favorite movie of all time. Have watched it several times and it literally flawless. Hits every emotion ..the music...perfect casting ...call back moments ..etc. “Talk to me goose” gave me goosebumps each time he said it.
THIS is how you do a sequel. 👍🏻🇺🇸😎
One of the best things about this movie is experiencing it with someone who’s seeing it for the first time. Thank you for sharing your reaction and letting me live vicariously through you!!
I love that the X Wing shirt makes its appearance here, with the final mission’s nod to the Death Star trench run and all. Appropriate for a great movie. 🙌🏼
Just a shame it seems Rogue Squadron won't see the light of day
With Hangman as Han Solo in the end.
Penny is the first Admirals daughter that Maverick got in trouble with in 1986.
I'm a blubbering mess every single time I watch this movie and reactions to it. It's one of those rare sequels that's even better than the original and not just because of the nostalgia factor. Nikki's reaction is perfect.
I thought it was just me! Just watched two different reactions and cried both times 😂
First things first, most of the flight scenes were real. They hooked up cameras inside the cockpits of each fighter jet to show each characters POVs, however none of them actually flew the jets. They were all in the back seat while the actual pilot flew the plane. Second, the plane at the end of the movie belongs to Tom Cruise, and yes, he was actually flying that plane.
where i work there were many people that watched this movie and came out crying and said they were shocked that they cried because of how great the story was and how loveable the characters were
There are 2 different types of F/A Super Hornets: F18-E & F.
F/A-18E is a single-seat plane. Maverick, Rooster, & Hangman flew these in the mission.
F/A-18F is a 2-seat airplane. Phoenix/Bob & Dagger 4 flew these.
In the filming: Navy used F/18F’s. Navy pilot in the front seat flying. Actor & miniature cameras in the back.
In pre-production Tom Cruise had cast go thru F-18 training (yes there was throwing up) & underwear training.
Most flying scenes are real. The cgi was Maverick “splitting throttles”, all crashes, all missile strikes, last bad guy’s funky maneuver to get behind Maverick, bird strike & Maverick going between the 2 pilots (even the Blue Angels aren’t crazy enough to do that).
Regarding Maverick throwing Goose's dogtags into the ocean - almost every active service member has multiple sets. It's a near certainty that his wife had a set or more to pass along to baby Rooster.
30:27
Nikki: All of these can't be good for you
Steven thinking: HELL YEAH! a fcking f-18
In the end, good script, good characters played by fitting actors, kick ass music and filming, just the right dose of humor... And the nostalgia. Quite sure we're going to see more "nostsequels" in the years to come. How many will be that good, we'll have to see.
I never actually knew about Val’s health issues so knowing he can’t really talk anymore hurts my heart. He hesitated to come back to this sequel because of his vocal issues
The way he looks in the diner after the Dark Star crash reminds me of the line from the first movie when Charlie tells him he's not going to be happy unless he's going Mach 2 with his hair on fire.
Watch the 1st one as a teen and never let it go. My grown children invited me to watch this one , once it hit theaters. I was very hesitant. I did go and did not regret it. Great Movie. Brought back my youth for the evening.
Madly into Top Gun as a youngster. This made me really emotional, especially seeing Val Kilmer. Getting old is a bitch
Not just an old man, he's an old man that succesfully survived throat cancer...but lost his voice in the fight against it.
Love that you openly admit to watching the Movie before, so many reaction creators make comments that make it obvious that they have seen the movie before yet keep claiming it is their first time watch!!! Seriously love how both of you come across open and real about the movies you are reacting to!
Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer in real life. Friends (no not really, but they are not enemies either). Very different people. They had a somewhat friendly rivalry going on when they were filming the first movie together on Miramar and the Enterprise/Ranger interior.
Anthony Edwards, and Meg Ryan were the 2 coolest and humblest actors back then. They walked around and talked to everyone and refused to sign autographs because they would tell you that they were playing side parts and that they were just actors not stars.
The bar where they did the piano scene was 3 blocks away from my apartment. It was closed for 3 days when they filmed that scene.
The Motorcycle was an enlisted mans bike that they bought from him. The black Porche that Kelly Macgillis drove was my commanding officers car. He had 3 of them A black one, a white one and a red one. They were going to use the red one but she liked the black one.
They put a plaque in it and he auctioned it after the movie was shown later that year.
Anyway I can't speak to much about Mr. Cruise. He has been in some great movies but he had an entourage of about 20 people around him when they filmed the first Top Gun and personally I never got star struck even when I had the chance to meet the few famous and or super actors in my life. I talked with the real Pappy Boyington at an airshow on Miramar, and that was a treat.
I also got to sit in his F4U Corsair, even though it wasn't the one he flew in WW2. It was his to show off at the shows.
I am sorry that I verged off the question. Out of the 2 of them I always liked Val Kilmer for the Mark Twain effort that he was bringing to life. Its a damn shame about his throat cancer.
I'll stop now. AD3 Eldan Fales USN. 1983-1987. Sgt US Army 1987-1999.
It was a great sequel. Great music, fun acting and a happy ending. Kinda rare in Hollywood
I love this film so so much. I saw it a ridiculous amount at the cinema and honestly I’d keep going back if I could. The story, the parent/child relationships, the acting, the visuals, the music. It’s my favourite of the year too. Saw a preview screening here in the UK on the same night as the uk premiere and it’s one of the best cinema experiences I’ve ever had.
I absolutely love that Penny is the only one to call Maverick “Pete”.
All the others know Maverick as a legend he is. She sure knows the man behind it.
Rooster playing the piano was to annoy H_ngm_n since he put the song on the jukebox and claimed to love it, i can only assume he played great balls of fire was cause it was his most fond memory and so played it whenever possible.
I think it’s amazing they were able to keep most of the movie secret for almost two years as the release date kept getting pushed back because of covid.
I watched the original Top Gun back in 1986, when I was in my 4th year in military service. Since then, I've retired from my 39+ years of service. Consequently, I've been waiting 36 years for this sequel . . . they didn't disappoint. GREAT MOVIE! GREAT REACTION!
Great film and sequel. I saw this in theaters in Screen X format. It felt like I was in the jet. Smh unbelievable. Definitely one of the best sequels of all time. I’m not shocked Tom cruise is still one of the most sought after actors even now. Happy Nikki got to enjoy this.
I don’t watch much television - hardly any.
But when I do follow a show, I’d say Nikki & Steven is best “reaction” team out there. It’s fun to rewatch things w/ them. Keep up the good work you two.
Apparently the Model used for the Mach 10 plane was actually designed by Skunkworks, and was so real (Even though it was a movie prop), caused the Chinese to Re-task a satellite to go take a look from orbit.
It's a cute story, but I'm not sure how we'd actually know that: I don't think China makes public declarations of what its spy satellites are doing or why.
It's the ⚡Power ⚡of The 80's 📺 & the 90's 🖥!!
The vintage plane from the beginning and end is Tom Cruise's actual plane. He has loved aviation most of his life and thats why he wanted to do the first Top Gun. So at the end he is flying it!
I watched this on my VR headset in a virtual theater. It was amazing. The flight sequences were nothing less than epic. In the early 80s I was in the Navy on the USS Kitty Hawk. The Hornets and Tomcats were unbelievable.
Not sure if you remember me. I knew this one would get Nikki, but I saw some glistening in Stevens eyes…. It’s so uplifting and uniting in times we all needed. It’s about getting over ourselves and being a team; about real leadership and leading by example…. and love. I see Hangman being the new Mav and Rooster being his goose but as a pilot. ❤
I have seen this movie 24 times and i still laugh, cry and smile every time i watch it. Just in case nobody has made mention, that is Toms plane at the end of the movie and yes he is flying. That scene was improved by Tom as they were only to be filmed rilling out of the hanger.
The plane at the end, a P51 Mustang, is actually Tom Cruise's plane. Yes, he does hold a pilots licence
Another plus for me in this great movie is watching Lewis Pullman as Bob. His father is the awesome Bill Pullman. Lewis was so good in Bad Times At the El Royale!!
Iceman Kilmer's real son did his lines.
This was just such a satisfying movie to watch. I watched it like 5-6 times and I would be happy to watch it again.
46:25 because he is. The section of Maverick flying the Mustang at the end is him flying it. He also owns and maintains it. Hes also licensed to operate several jet aircraft, including the F-18, and is certified to launch and land on carriers. The scene where he launches is ACTUALLY footage of him taking off from the carrier.
For me as an "Eastern European" (post communist country) this movie was one of the best in 90's and early 2000's for me. I was like 6 or 7 when I saw this movie for the first time and I ultimately loved it and still love it. When TG:Maverick was released it was like a restart of my childhood again. First movie was the reason why I wanted to be a fighter pilot. This movie just restarted this memory to me.
Nikki, your reactions are on the money! I'm a 63 year old Navy veteran, and I still cry at the end. There is so much emotion in this entire film. Very few sequels are better than the original - this one is!! Love you guys.❤
