The movie reveals that he is a former Defense Intelligence agent (DIA). The second movie goes into more detail about the DIA. He's old enough to be living off of his pension, but DIA also get "danger pay" bonuses like any other military related profession. So, he probably has a massive fortune to live off of on top of his pension for all of the danger pay bonuses he collected over the years. Yet, he still lives modestly and efficiently like the soldier he will always be.
@Dayspring oh god u people can't go a day in your lives without having to be seen, everyone just block and ignore these people, they love being wrong so they can feel good about it
That shot in 36:56 he looks like Michael Myers standing there someone tell Michael, Denzel is stealing his thing lol Michael's like "Hey man I was here first."
23:38 I love how in that scene Teddy steps up to Robert McCall because he's used to intimidating people, but Robert also steps forward and goes right in his face without even blinking. I think at that moment Teddy knew something was wrong, lol.
It's an amazing way of revealing who these characters are. Like you said, for Teddy, it shows he's used to intimidating people. He's a spooky dude. For Robert, he took a tactically advantageous position by meeting him at the head of the stairs. A regular Joe wouldn't do that and Teddy knew if Robert was the guy he's looking for, he killed 5 armed guys undetected. Teddy definitely knew and even said in the car, "Everything about him is wrong." Best scene in the movie.
Denzel Washington is just ageless. 60 years old in this film. Third movie is expected in September and he'll be 68 going on 69. Man is immortal! Love all of his films. Man on Fire, Fences and The Book of Eli are all favourites of mine, but he has such a filmography under his belt.
His birthday is in December, so the age time is slow whenever your birthday is in December like me. Many people told me I was in my 20s or 30s because I have a beard and mustache at an early age, but I am very young. Age: 19 Dec.24 Both of our birthdays take time to age like we are immortal or ageless.
If you haven't seen Denzel in 'Flight', you really should. It's about a pilot dealing with an air disaster and how they handled it. Denzel is a flawed but super-charismatic character. I think you'll love it if you liked 'Training Day'.
I really love Denzel in this. He's so calm and collected. He even gives the bad guys a chance to do the right thing. He was willing to give $9,800 to buy the girl's freedom and only hurt people when they gave him no choice. But as mentioned...his demeanor is what made this movie. He didn't look like he was putting in any effort and he sort of shut off all of his emotions when he had to kill people. Such a great performance.
He’s what you would consider a sleeper agent. There are triggering methods that he uses to remove the fear. It’s control. When he opens and closes the doors and locks it. It puts him in control. And when he sets the timer. It’s him turning it into a timed speed run. It’s a mental control that allows him to fight with maximum efficiency and removes the fear element. He’s effectively a killing machine at that point.
Watching Nikki and steven reacting to these movies is like watching a movie with a couple of friends. Their style of reaction does not disturb the flow of the movies, too.
Important message for Nikki and Steven: If you have loved every Denzel movie, and ask "where has this movie been all my life", then you need to consider reacting to "Safe House" (2012) staring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. If you have enjoyed Man on Fire, Training Day, and The Equalizer, then Safe House is going to be right up your alley. Absolutely incredible performance by Denzel in this one.
The original 1985 to 1989 TV series was one of my favorites. Coming home late at night from work was always scary. Whenever I was in a scary situation, I would always ask; “What would Robert McCall do?” It always helped overcome the fear of the shadows and the unknown. The Equalizer 2014 movie had the same effect.
The show was always about people suffering some great injustice that only Robert McCall could help with. And he would .. level the playing field. In this movie in the end he has a website open with the slogans, so in a way this movie is the origin story of the Equalizer.
Crazy fact, before the old man in the show was picked for the role, the part was offered to Denzel. He wanted to do it, but couldn't as he was already doing St Elsewhere.
Absolutely LOVED this movie too! If you loved this one, you’ll love Equalizer 2 even more. They go into his background & his connections. Also, Pedro Pascal is costarring! WOW!!!
I thought the second one was not as good. But I watched it again after a couple years, and it really grew on me. I'd like to see a reaction to that as well.
@@stich21 I get it but I still really liked the 2nd one when it premiered & after watching it 3 times (🤷🏽♀️I couldn’t help myself) I now like it more than the 1st one. 😊
The Equalizer started as an action/crime drama series from the 1980a. The original Robert McCarll was a former British commando recruited to be a "problem solver" for British Intelligence. His specialty as an agent was making it look like an accident. When he retired, he started helping people who couldn't otherwise get help, offering to "equalize" the situation. The storylines in the show often dealt with civilians who were up against gang members, or the mafia, or corrupt cops, and so on.
This is my FAVORITE Denzel Washinton movie of all time! I loved his take on the character. It's based on an 80's TV series I used to watch growing up. I liked that show, but I really liked Denzel's take on the character of Robert. Great reaction!
@Courtney Hamilton "Training Day" is excellent. But the reason why this movie is my favorite Denzel movie is his take on an established character. I grew up watching the TV series, and I thought the character was cool then. But it's rare when another actor comes along and not only does justice to the character but actually makes the character even better...it's amazing. Denzel just gave the character such depth. I really like most of his other roles (Training Day, Crimson Tide, etc.), but there is just something about him playing this character in particular. It's like he made it his.
Actually, she says he didn't come for help, he came for permission. I have a problem with that line, which doesn't make a lot of sense in context. Robert DID come to get her help in identifying this brutal villain and his associations, so that he can decide how to exact revenge and more. She gives him some psychological boost as well, and provides information that helps him justify doing what he's about to do. So maybe that's a stretch of the word permission.
@@DanishSatkut That makes sense, and I hadn't thought of it that way. But he definitely needed help as well. She provided him with info on the thug who was his adversary, and that was crucial intel.
@@surfwriter8461 I think that Robert wanted her to give him the permission to go back to the old Robert that he promised his wife he wouldn't. There could be the context like what you said about knowing what to go after, or even if there is some reason the agency wouldn't want him to. The info she got could have been just her being informed on if there were any issues with going after them. There is a lot of misdirection in the scene. When she says she doesn't have a lot of influence and then is dropped of by a marine helicopter, that's even more influential than having a driver.
I always run all of Denzel’s characters together: he was a pip then a football coach then got arrested getting his son a new heart by holding a hospital hostage then got out of jail and lived a hard life of Training Day then he equalized. Afterwards he tried to pull his life together and became a bodyguard for a little girl and died. 😂 You guys should watch “The Equalizer 2” AND “Haywire”
That first verbal showdown between them is insane. They both know, yet neither one can say yet. Both are at the top of their game... Teddy just doesn't realize that his top game is WAY short. Straight admitting he was there that night throws him. Being reminded to leave his card throws him. He did good. Most wouldn't have caught those. LOVE this movie. The tension is incredible. And how he is protrayed to everyone else as calm, mild mannered, always helping anyone... and then his utterly brutal and rapid takedown of anyone who gets in the way of someone he wants to help... it's amazing. And the 2nd one really builds on it and gives some backstory to him. Also has some of the best scenes. I love that they highlight his observational skills. Notice everything all at once. Anything can be a weapon, use whatever you have at hand. Speed and overwhelming force. Fun fact, honey is great for disinfecting wounds. Has antimicrobial and antibiotic properties. Specific type though, not just any. So that was a really cool and accurate little scene. Also, honey never goes bad.
Yes, The Accountant is great, awesome cast plus a copy of my favorite Jackson Pollock painting "Free Form" (with an eye just off center looking out added by the film makers) makes it a must see.
@@graciefolden2359 Thank you Gracie, I have always wanted to know the name of that painting! Now I have to watch it again to see the eye. Thank you for the knowledge❣
It seems you missed a really cool detail during Bob and Nikolai's last talk. When Nikolai asks Bob what he sees when looking at him, Bob tells the story of a troubled child taken in by a kind and empathetic man and given a chance at a life, only for the man and his wife to be murdered. He says he believes the child did it, fearing the man would one day decide he wasn't worth it and not wanting to find out. The implication is that the child in the story is Nikolai, and that Bob did his research on him (showing the connections and information he has access to). He then states that he gave the men he killed a chance and they made their decision, and he gives Nikolai the chance to make his. The men made the same mistake Nikolai made way back and now they're dead for it, and he's giving him the opportunity not to make that mistake again.
"...her life's gonna go on, yours is gonna to end right here on this funky floor over $9800 dollars. You should've taken the money." This line should be a viral as the line from Taken.
THIS right here is how you transfer an awesome tv show into an awesome movie. This is done very well. I also recommend the tv series as well if you haven't seen it. And I highly recommend THE BOOK OF ELI starring Denzel.
There was a TV series back in the day, and they rarely/barely explained his past. His "newspaper ad" was "Odds against you, call the Equalizer" and basically he helped underdogs being victimized by bad guys. It was very fun to watch. Now they have these movies and a new series.
You know what, what a coincidence! Just watched this movie on some tv channel last week. I didn't expect it to go so hard and I absolutely had a blast having my own no-audience commentary session on it hahahah you gotta watch the sequel! And the third movie is coming out this year woohoo so excited
Just a note: Robert is so precise on his daily routine that is shown in his apartment, clean and organized, something he does daily, then why would he need an alarm clock? After 12 years in the Marine Corps, I wake up at 4:30 am every morning, without an alarm clock.
That first fight with the corkscrew is one of the most effective scenes ever for establishing your main character as someone to absolutely not be fucked with under any circumstances, incredible movie.
Robert McCall in the TV series was essentially MI6 (like 007), but Denzel's iteration was CIA or something like that, a field operative. Which is why he knows martial arts, weapons, etc. The reason he got out of the spy business was his late wife. Elena (played by "Hit Girl" herself, was the reason he got back in, the young man whose mother got burned out, was just the icing on the cake. That and the enforcer coming on the scene.
If you haven’t seen The Hurricane with Denzel, it’s DEFINITELY worth watching. Such a great movie as he portrays Rubin “The Hurricane” Carter. Amazing movie and very heart wrenching. I think you’ll love it!
This based off the 80's series The Equalizer as a child of the 80s my father and I loved the show. Difference McCall was a former british spy in New York helping ppl
Please watch the sequel. I hear there's a part three coming out. I love Denzel. I would literally pay to watch him walk back and forth across the screen.
The best part in this movie is that Robert is never scared, panicked or angry. Even for a second. He is just so sure of his skills and of what he is doing it's freezing my blood. Awesome. Also guys - watch "The Magnificent Seven" with him. The same director as here, Ethan Hawke from "Training Day" is in it too. It's great.
I LOVE that you've been watching action movies lately. This is another one I really loved. Denzel, Tom, Keanu, and Liam Neeson all have to work together.
Genial, impressive, versatile, creative and iconic. Denzel Washington admired Sidney Poitier so very much that he became the Poitier of our generation.
Notice that when Robert has the nail gun against Teddy's throat, Teddy slowly nods as if to say, "Please end this for me." It's both an act of defiance and accepting his fate. The second movie is good too. I hope they do a third, even though 1 and 2 only did fairly well (not bad but not great). I've seen this one dozens of times and that first scene with the Russian mob is so well done.
Huge fan of your reactions and knew you would enjoy this... And the sequel will give you much more of his background. Great remake of the original TV series (Edward Woodward RIP), while the recent TV revival staring Queen Latifah was another, very enjoyable approach
yeah,... no... I don't believe Latifah cuts it tho... I get the approach to it, I see her as a drama actress, but she just doesn't cut it as a former spec-ops.
27:54 You were wondering what his past was. Notice when she says "I'm not at The Agency anymore." "The Agency" is basically jargon for those who work for the government and it means the CIA. Central Intelligence Agency, they all just say "The Agency." And when they say "Langley" they are talking about the headquarters in Langley, VA. So basically anytime you hear someone say "Langley" or "The Agency" they are talking about the CIA. So that would imply that Robert McCall was in the CIA with her. He was probably in their Special Activities Division, one of their Ground Branch operators. Those guys are basically like Navy SEALs but operating for the CIA.
I cannot believe it either that it's taken you so long to watch 'The Equalizer' (2014), but nevertheless, I'm so glad you hadn't now, because it was so much fun watching your reactions, I enjoyed re-watching it again with you guys and liked you enjoyed this vigilante story, his OCD and his special skills in exterminating the enemy and you're right, the kills were unique. Denzel is one of my favourite actors, I just LOVE him in every film he does. Not sure if you've seen these two, but you may enjoy reacting to "Safe House" and "Inside Man" as well. Nikki you made me laugh when you shouted "With a book b**** with a book, with a *bleep n* book." One of the best lines of the movie was when 'Robert McCall'/'The Equalizer' said "When you pray for the rain you've got to deal with the mud too" - I agree with you Nikki, "WORD". Next best line when 'Robert McCall'/'The Equalizer' tells 'Nicolai "Teddy" Itchenko' after interrupting his meal at the table in the restaurant about the promise he made to someone he loved very much that he wouldn't go back to being that person he wasn't proud of and proceeds to tell him "but for you I'm gonna make an exception" - SCARY when a man like 'The Equalizer' tells you those words, you better believe him! I absolutely loved this whole restaurant scene with 'McCall' telling the story of the little Russian kid, showing 'Nicolai' he'd done his research on him, but implied in a subtle way etc etc. Yep the chills in this movie and the next are real Steve', but LOVE and laughed so hard when you said "Home Alone the Adult Edition".😂🤣🤣🤣 Once again, a GREAT reaction as ALWAYS!
If you ever get the chance to see some of the behind the scenes about the fight coordination, it’s worth your time. It really demonstrates how military special ops weaponize observation, it’s not just about noticing things others don’t, they catalog, categorize and activate everything and everyone around them so they can be precision weapons with whatever is at hand. So much so, that they don’t feel they need to have or use traditional weapons and can predict outcomes at an exceptionally high percentage.
I freaking love the Equalizer it's just really good Denzel did a fantastic job . i think the third one is gonna be this year can't wait i just love Denzel i think he did a great job with is facial expressions and his eyes on those movies cause you can see the remorse on his face and eyes of failing his promises and going back to his "old self" but for the great of good ...
Denzel Washington coached his son in football in high school for a while and his son played division 1 football and briefly in the NFL and is now a respected actor in Hollywood.
Such a great movie. I loved the tv show as well. Used to watch it with my grandma 🤣. It's his stillness that works so well. Every movement is planned. Ugh! Sooo good!
Great reaction 😂 one of my favorite TV shows growing up. My best memories are how the Equalizer changed the life of the people he helped. Denzel is just….Denzel
The movie is inspired by a television show back in 1985. Him responding to an online ad at the end is from the tv show where in a newspaper the Equalizer would place an ad saying 'Got a problem? Odd's against you?'
So happy you watched this movie, I hope you will watch the second movie too, Denzel Washington is such a good actor. The 3rd movie is coming out soon also, so excited for this.
I saw that movie when it came out and I loved it. Happy you picked up on this! Looking forward to your reaction to the second part. Have you seen "Book of Eli" (2010)? A dystopian endtime movie with Denzel and Garry Oldman, AMAZING! You will love it.
I can't believe you guys haven't seen this movie in 2014 but I'm glad you guys reacted to it. I can't wait for your Equalizer 2 reaction. Antione Fuqua, who directed Training Day, also directed the Equalizer movies.

Yeah, the script that Denzel read and spoke in the movie was very well done and written by a smart person/smart people. Not sure how many people wrote this script. However, Denzel's performance was very well done, per usual. What really makes this movie stand out, part 2 also, is the fact that both have great scripts and awesome people to put those words on film and into action.
Obviously the sequel needs to be watched also but for just a really good bad-ass Denzel movie I would go with Man on Fire. More emotional involvement and it packs more of a punch.
I always love that the villain that watched my guy kill a dude with a book opt to threaten his friends to get him to come out in to the light and they chose the one place where every single item in inventory can be used to end someone in a fun and unique way. Talk about stupid.

"You and I know what I really am." That line always gets me.
You’re missing some occupations 😂
You forgot about how he survived the apocalypse but went blind and memorized the Bible
Teddy should have known when he was looking at the police photos! He's never seen skills like that!
Love you both! Please watch The Accountant (2016) whenever you can. A great movie and an even better cast. Enjoy
The Accountant was awesome and a total surprise to me when I watched it.
2 of the minor bad guys from this were in The Accountant as minor bad guys lol
"You asked me what I saw when I looked at you. What do you see when you look at me?"
Very underrated movie...it was simple and action packed. The 2nd is just as good. Great reaction!!
The lessons from this movie is to always be kind to people and never judge, that's it... Denzel Washington is truly an inspiration 🙏💯...
Training Day is one of my fav movies of all time. Denzels best role to this day imo
Man on Fire, American Gangster and Remember the Titans are certainly in the running.
@@V0ltron All great but TD is still my fav
I wanna go home Jake
"...her life's gonna go on, yours is gonna to end right here on this funky floor over $9800 dollars. You should've taken the money." This line should be a viral as the line from Taken.
THIS right here is how you transfer an awesome tv show into an awesome movie. This is done very well. I also recommend the tv series as well if you haven't seen it. And I highly recommend THE BOOK OF ELI starring Denzel.
YES - the Book of Eli is a fantastic movie.
Y'all have become my favorite reaction channel. Been watching for years and just love it here. Thanks!
The sequel is really good, too. And they’re making a third one.
I've heard the third one reunites him with Dakota Fanning. Looking forward to that.
Outstanding movie. Near the end, when that song plays -- "If I'm to die alone, I will have my vengeance" -- gave me the biggest chills.
I'm not sure why it's not as popular, but one of my other favorites of Denzel's is Deja Vu (2006), definitely worth a watch.
Home alone, adult version...such a great drill down. Legend!
He has a great walk. That would work! 😄
Part 3 September 2023...so I hear
@@jaymcclane September 1 2023
Or as my Dad used to say: "I could watch Denzel in a toilet paper commercial, and enjoy every second of it"😌
The best part in this movie is that Robert is never scared, panicked or angry.
Denzel, Tom, Keanu, and Liam Neeson all have to work together.
the end of the world Lmao
Yes!!! All the guys kicking butt together
I love 23:38
Bad guy steps forward and Denzel with no hesitation gets right in his face.
I really liked the tv show in the 80s. So satisfying to see the Equalizer come and provide justice in each episode. Really a good show.
Genial, impressive, versatile, creative and iconic. Denzel Washington admired Sidney Poitier so very much that he became the Poitier of our generation.
It's about time that Reactors started doing this Film! I'm so anxious to see YOUR Reaction!!!
More black actors films period.
Finally!!!! Don't stop with this one. Denzel never fails.
One of the best movies ever. Glad y'all enjoyed it. Great reaction
You guys have to watch the sequel. The Equalizer II. Pedro Pascal is in it and he and Denzel are so good together .
I love how she squeezes his arm whenever she can’t digest the scenes😅😅
Huge fan of your reactions and knew you would enjoy this... And the sequel will give you much more of his background. Great remake of the original TV series (Edward Woodward RIP), while the recent TV revival staring Queen Latifah was another, very enjoyable approach
If anyone is interested, there are some videos on TH-cam of the original series that aired on tv back in the 80’s. Check them out.
yeah,... no... I don't believe Latifah cuts it tho...
I get the approach to it, I see her as a drama actress, but she just doesn't cut it as a former spec-ops.
I also love how they made Denzel look like he's a real bad ass with his punching and hitting. Man!! It's soooo real
The original Equalizer series with Robert McCall (Edward Woodward) was very good. I miss that show.
And the original British series "Callan" before that.
Great reaction guys! Im glad you guys loved this movie as much as I did!
Yep the chills in this movie and the next are real Steve', but LOVE and laughed so hard when you said "Home Alone the Adult Edition".😂🤣🤣🤣
Once again, a GREAT reaction as ALWAYS!
One of my favourite films. Denzel is brilliant and I love his relationship with Ralphie.
Denzel ... Man on Fire as you mentioned is excellent, but John Q is great too. You should check that out if you've not seen it. We love Denzel ❤
1:22 as for me... The Book Of Eli is what I automatically think of when Denzel is mentioned in any conversation.😎
Just FYI guys this was directed by Antoine Fuqua, he directed the Equalizer trilogy . The late Tony Scott directed Man on Fire.
Freaking awesome movie! Denzel is part bad ass and part pure soul.
My favorite line from the commentators
" Whose face/ eye is that going into? "
A comedy hour from an action thriller
Love this movie and waited years for you to DO THIS ONE. Thanks yall
I love the music in this movie. The music sets the tone of the scenes so well.
A true Denzel banger. #2 is very good too!
Hey guys awesome reaction!! Glad y'all loved it..this is one of my favorites!!
Such a great movie. I loved the tv show as well. Used to watch it with my grandma 🤣. It's his stillness that works so well. Every movement is planned. Ugh! Sooo good!
Only just found this reaction, so glad I did. Thank you.
Great movie. Flies under the radar. Kind of a shame this didn’t become a more popular series. But the 2nd one is just as fun.
Sadly Tony Scott, who directed Man On Fire ended himself. This was directed by Antoine Fuqua who also directed Training Day.
Omfg I'm so happy you reacted to this. There's barely anyone reacting to this masterpiece.
How was he able to set the timer on the microwave when the power was out in the hardware building? Must be one of the old ones where you turn a knob.
The original John Wick. 😂
I can't believe you guys haven't seen this movie in 2014 but I'm glad you guys reacted to it. I can't wait for your Equalizer 2 reaction. Antione Fuqua, who directed Training Day, also directed the Equalizer movies.
please do part 2.. love you guys!!!
indeed also Pedro Pascal is also awesome in the second one
@ 41:08 ish
I’m with Nikki here……that shit was hilarious to me aswell my dude!😅😉👍
Tho…bizarrely it sure as hell seemed like I was the only person in the theater who thought so…cause holy shot did my laughter sound so freaking loud and distinct, which imo basically means that either I was (at best) one of a few or (more likely) the only people/person who laughed at that…like wtf my dudes?😅🤷♀️Or maybe it’s cause I’m a sucker for a bit of inconsequential dialogue payoffs ffs!?😉😂
I’d love to see you guys react to Man on fire. One of the greatest movies ever made and Denzel is amazing in it
Yeah, I also came here to recommend Man on fire. Amazing movie with great acting.
Incredible film! I add a third vote for that one!
They have seen Man on Fire
and true story as well
Yeah, the script that Denzel read and spoke in the movie was very well done and written by a smart person/smart people.
One of my favorites. If it has Denzel in it, you know it's going to be amazing!! Love the reactions!
He's a former CIA Black Ops
One of the best movie reactions I’ve seen. You both gave me a couple of sound bytes to sprinkle in my playlists😆👌
Am I the only one who wants to see a John Wick, Equalizer, and Nobody crossover?!?! I want those three to meet up somehow and go EPICALLY BIBLICAL on some bad bad dudes....just saying!!!
his words in all of his movies are inspiring in one form or another. I met him in person and hes down to earth.
Denzel is one of those true movie stars that just transcend good acting, like Jack Nicholson.
He such a great actor because his first love was and will always be broadway. He’s never stopped doing broadway since he landed his first feature film role.
