@@TemperedMedia we probably would've gotten a more action and story based/character driven film with a higher focus on the directoral vision that had next to nothing to do with the games, but would've made for a unique sci-fi-punk film that would've probably flopped regardless, but would've been better remembered as a genuinely unique/odd take on the source material rather than being seen as a joke that's best enjoyment is watching it ironically.

Neal Breen, Mark has learned from his past work, improved, and solidified his craft. Plus, that one probably didn't start with the patented (I assume) introduction with the emphatic "TO the show," and Super Mario really warrants such an introduction.

I love the original SMB movie, just how notorious it has become over the years. The stories behind it's production are absolutely legendary in the annals of modern media.
Honestly, if i could make any movie, I'd make a mockumentary about the making of the original Super Mario Bros movie. Cast stand-ins for all the players involved, and interlace interviews with actual stars and staff, esp. John Leguizamo, since both Hopkins and Hopper are no longer with us.

I exactly have the same opinion of this movie as Mark: not groundbreaking, but delivered on expectations, no matter as a NES era fan or modern one. The biggest repproach I'd have is how Illumination mostly used Magikoopa as comic relief and then kind of forgot about him along the way and how they got Luigi jailed in Bowser's fortress early on, not really giving him time to develop his character from pushover to badass. But it was an engaging watch in the action department, for sure.

  • @akaimizu1

The new Mario Movie wasn’t a cinematic masterpiece by general movie standards. But one thing I believe every critic of the Mario Movie completely misses is, “Did the movie understand the assignment?” The Mario Movie was a full on celebration of Mario and some of Nintendo’s earliest IPs, as well as having just the plot needed to make a movie out of. It also helped that they kind of gamified the Easter eggs in the movie as well. So a videogame movie breaking out the mold of trying to just be some blockbuster movie to compare to Citizen Cain or something, they made a videogame movie that was completely not only afraid to BE the videogame, but also was a game in itself. Taking the wide genre, it’s inspired from, into the Theatre. The audience for Mario wanted to see Platforming. They wanted to see familiar block behavior when the characters interact with them. Laugh at the self-inflection about “why am I so familiar with what is going on there, and yeah, those floating bricks would seem weird?” It understood the assignment. It used the familiarity of the audience, for the Wild wacky and weird they’ve grown comfortable with, and shined a mirror on it to make the audience smile. Not only at the movie, but at themselves.
I think it took advantage of timing, and that the majority of the audience now plays videogames, compared to the past. And the adults who waited like 30+ years for the movie they wanted, as a kid, to finally come out. Yeah. A movie can be great in itself and be successful, it can also be one that truly understands the assignment and be successful. I think we all need to answer the question, one which I would love people to try to discuss and come up with an answer. What do you think the people at large want from a videogame movie? Particularly from videogames that don’t try to be movie-like in the first place? Ones that, in their source material, simply go wacky for the pure sense of wonder and fun, building their world or universe off it?

I've heard a lot of people mention that they didn't like Rogan's Donkey Kong but I thought he was great. The only voice that didn't work for me was Anya Taylor Joy as Peach. I agree that the movie was mostly just checking the boxes for game references but it was done in a way that made it very entertaining.

Well done video. Nice you reviewed it and didn't give a play by play on an easy route to bash a film. Was good you gave credit to voice actors and make people realize why celebs are used. Good research and smart way to make a video. We need more people , like this, explaining pop culture, the time it happened and how it change. It takes a lot more courage these days to say, hey we didn't have the technology or explain what art or business stage Hollywood was in at that time. We take for granted now cause computers can do it all. And many forget how long and the difficulties it once took to make movies. I hope Mark continues to make smart videos like this than bash movies from the 50s that has no budget or technology. You make great video but I know you can hold a better standard like done in this video

I saw the original SMB movie when it hit theaters and holy cow did that movie spoil any chances for enjoyment, it was constant annoyance about how almost any of it could possibly relate to the game characters. There were little bits here and there, but it really showed how confused everything was, just baffling. It's also one of the reasons I haven't seen the 2023 version, the 1993 version was really that bad that it spoiled any future movies, regardless of whether they're any good.

I worked in the gaming industry and one of the hardest parts is trying to secure an IP to develop a game. It is interesting to see the reverse; when the gaming giant is the owner of the IP and another industry wants to work with it.
On a completely different note, I think I saw the Mario movie back in the 90s but I cannot remember well. I do remember Street Fighter and that was such a mess. It made me so annoyed 😂 that I remember.

The Double Dragon movie was a laughable failure too, which is sad. At one point this franchise was the invincible n°1 of its genre, before being dethroned by Streets of Rage and Final Fight. The flick didn't help DD's relevancy

Honestly the funny thing about the PowerGlove, is that we do all have it's decendants in our homes. Motion controls, something we expect to come standard from Nintendo on all their consoles/handhelds since the Wii. The Joycon is the modern powerglove, you just use two of them.
Also, this video is so good. I love all the research you did for it.

It always sucks when a movie that was initially intended to be for more mature audiences (as the 1993 film was) is abruptly redone to appeal more to kids, not only because the result fails to fully satisfy any audience, but because you can tell there's a substantially better film buried underneath what you're watching that will never get rescued.

It works wonders and will work perfectly and dominate the box office. *Yes i wanna basically re-watch an entire video game ive played as an hd animated movie*

Can’t they just insert big stars to do cameos and use voice actors to star? I could see Tom Hanks appearing on late night talk shows with the gimmick, “I had a brief time to play an incredible character. Dolly Parton, too.” Etc. I know, they made their billions so their formula works.(Not necessarily artistically)

If I was only aloud to give one problem with the 1993 film, even as difficult as that may sound, I could do it. The one biggest problem with it is that it does not know or show where it goes. It looks like an adult film but does not go there. It is expected to be a kids’ film but does not go there. It is advertised as a video game film but goes way far away from that. It is introduced as a dinosaur story but is humanoid. Many think that Nintendo endorsed it. Well, they kinda just said, “Whatever. We won’t help or even care.” There you have it. The 1993 film was unique because it was built to be entertaining with no destination whatsoever. 😉
