+bratzko79 BUT, the first movement is faster than the last!! Would you know Haydn's tempo he wrote for the first movement? The semis at the very end would be very sparkly at a Presto speed! There have been many circumstances when I have liked a particular performance, until I hear it in another pianist's hands, when I then realise it could be played even better. Listen to other performances of this piece before you settle for this one. It may be that first impressions win in the very end, but, at least, you will have had pleasure in assessing other performances!!
+bratzko79 I prefer Mozart's piano sonatas to Haydn's whose sonatas tend to be more leaning on basic melodies with simple harmonies (with exceptions), therefore I cannot cite a favourite performer. Haydn's greatest claim to fame is that he established strong musical forms which later composers were able to develop, and ultimately break away from. Always, with performances, I am looking for something new that the performer may highlight for me. I am bored to tears with those who play PRECISELY what is on the page: with such as those, a robot could not improve upon!!
For the first time Sokolov disappoints me. I can hardly believe it's really him playing... Tempos are arbitrary and the whole reading seems very inconsistent to me. Third movement is faster than the first, the same notation is some time played as acciaccatura and some time appoggiatura. Frankly I'm puzzled
