Is there a word that describes equal combinations of Authentic Genius and True Humility? I am wriier and I don't know of any such word in the English language. Sadly, Maestro Sokolov doesn't perform in the U.S. anymore, and hasn't done so for many years. I have heard credible accounts of Americans who traveled abroad just to hear Grigory Sokolov play. I can't think of a better way to spend money. It reminds me of the story about how J.S. Bach walked 250 miles (or so it is said) to hear Buxtehude play the organ.
Sokolov plays the same notes from the same copy everyone else have but in his hands it is always new Bach. Or whoever`s oeuvre he takes on for that matter. Every time he catches one off guard with something new one never expected to hear in familiar piece. Same here. And yet it feels like a revelation to hear Bach so intimately sounding with crystalline purity, so impossibly airy, literally lit from within in every note. Sokolov has this unique lived-in quality in his attitude as if Bach`s sublime musical logic does not make him to speed up and show off the bravura of the composer's thought. He`d rather revel in it and immerse us into the calligraphic complexities of voices and one does completely trust his guidance in that magically unhurried journey. Hearing Bach like that anew one doesn't want to deal with whatever "streamlined" or "modernized" pretenses that will rob one of the rhythmic and sonic richness one experiences in this interpretation. That is for the others. Sokolov is not courting media nor audiences. We are basically allowed to witness his exchanges with composer and if we are sensitive enough then we are in for an otherworldly event. Good enough for a mortal...

He is a great pianist. His technique is impeccable, his memory and concentration skills are amazing and what I love the most about his playing is his pulse, it is electrifying. I must say with all honesty, though that he gets extremely loud so easily which I find not too musical or tasteful (in places where it is not the climax of the piece or necessary he hammers the piano in a way that's unpleasant). His interpretations are still very interesting. If he controlled his Fortes a little more wisely he would be a perfect musician, if such a thing exists... Anyway, bravo maestro!!
This and other recordings do not do him justice in the respects which you describe. I have attended 3 of his recitals and in every one there was a very palpable sense of when the music was climaxing - because of his use of dynamics - and at these moments it is almost impossible to breath. You never leave one of his recitals under any impression other than that in which you believe you have just experienced absolute perfection (at least in my experience).
