She only gave what the public wanted. I'm more amused that Sakkari just gave a very quick handshake in the semis, lol. I don't want to read to much into it but I'm guessing that Emma gets along well with Rogers, Bencic and Fernandez. Maybe not so well with Sakkari, lol.

Before this match, maybe Emma's run was "lucky" in that she hadn't faced any Top-20 opponents. After this match, you just knew she was the real deal. I didn't expect her to win the thing still, but there were no doubts from here that Emma was rapidly becoming a top player!

Too many people looked at her opponents on her side of the draw and came to the conclusion hers was the easier side, not considering everyone of those players were 100+ ranks above her. From her perspective, considering her lack of experience, it was a very hard draw. Yet she still beat them in straight sets.

    • @charlie172011

Bencic should have been ranked outside the top30 though. Only there because of the frozen points.
But Sakkari was a Top15 opponent.

  • @miketols5420

What I took from Emma's games was that if she needed to adapt her play style, she would, whereas her opponents didn't adapt to Emma. 2-0 down to rogers, adapted won the next 11 games. 3-1 down to Bencic, she adapted and won the next 5 games.
In the final, when she was 2-1 down in the 2nd set, Emma upped/adapted her game to win 5 of the next 6 games.

Yes because she has an understated variety plus power. Barty is heavy variety with a little power. Emma is more even in her power and variety. The old Andreescu could play similarly but went heavy power lately. I hope she will return to her old ways. Andreescu has an athletes mentality without an athletes body. Hope she can become a consistent threat. I’m curious of a matchup between Emma and Ash. They are the most competitive variety players at the moment.

Why does beating a top 10 even matter, unless they happen to be in a tournament final? Ask Rogers, Sakkari and Fernandez how much it really mattered in the end? They can take some satisfaction from the achievement and the hope of a repeat, but in the larger picture, they mean little if the final outcome of your effort brings no reward other than a little pride and some ranking points.
Everyone can beat such big players in their time. The only level you look for in yourself, in any sport, is playing at a consistently high level, whoever your opponent is, as that is what gets you to the top of your game.
Beating a top 10 player then suffering defeat against your next much lower ranked opponent such as Rogers, Sakkari and Fernandez did, shows how such an achievement means so little.
Raducanu's consistency is what got her the title, not who she beat along the way.

Sakkari just went into BBB (brainless ball bashing) mode when she knew she couldn't keep up with Emma's consistency....as a result, Maria had TWICE (!!) as many UFE's than Emma with the same number of winners.

@@dfcintron Exactly. Much more often than not (and more often than other players), Emma gets into proper position on most of those wide shots and therefore not only hits it where she wants to with great power, because of her proper positioning she's already moving back towards the center of the court as she finishes the shot. Longer rallies, more winners from both players, more creative variety of angles and shots, very fast tempo from both players. The way Bencic constructed the points was better than Leylah. The consistency in numbers, numbers of games played, numbers of sets won, lower probability if goes to 3rd set, taking calculated shots, percentage of risk to wins if some shots were executed differently... I'm getting a headache already!

@@venturistc1923 The big difference was Fernandez flunking her 1st serve so much in the final. That always edged Raducanu. What made it harder was of course Leftie.
Here Bencic is experienced, hot off winning Olympics, playing more tactical and Quarters, Raducanu is in new area. She handled it amazingly well - coming from behind in 1st set.
Raducanu needs to convert more of her 30-40 breaks however: She gets a lot of them but needs to nail the 1st ones - makes all the difference to as you say complex tactics and match management eg percentages-vs-aggressive shots.

The element of surprise, the fact almost no one played against Emma yet, was probably a factor. Shapovalov at 17, shocked Nadal the first time he played against him for instance. She's a great player but she'll have to keep improving her game to consistently beat these top players.

    • @boke75

Shapovalov has a beautiful game if often erratic as he so often resorts to BBB mode, unfortunately. Which results in ridiculously high UFE counts. Since she won, she's gained weight (probably both muscle and fat), lost that swift and precise shot-making and movement that made her unbeatable in this tournament, and she's been figured out by the rest of the tour. It's unfortunate that another player has followed the footsteps of Ivanovic when she won her slam. I have hope but the way it's looking now, I don't see her finding this form again. It’s a shame that players like Bencic and Pliskova who beat Serena still don’t have a GS even though Serena isn’t in shape anymore. Unfortunately she’ll still be the queen of the WTA. You can’t rely on Osaka and Barty, Halep has always been inconsistent and sprinting isn’t the key. I’m glad she got 2 GS. Bencic and Pliskova have all the weapons but they always fade away. Keys is a brainless hitter as always. Svitolina literally has no weapons.

Having No line judges seems rather odd and relying on Hawkeye and the Referee, Mac would have had much less to argue with! I didn't expect to see another grand slam contender from the UK in my lifetime post Andy Murray and then along comes Emma, although I guess anybody watching this girl develop over the past few years probably wouldn't be so surprised

To add a comment on "no line judges", I think it's great, line calls are instant, so Players have to keep playing.

Fluke? Reaching 4th round in Wimbledon as a wildcard considering it was her first grandslam appearance and only has 1 WTA tour experience before this. Winning 10 straight rounds without dropping a set (that is 20 sets total!) as a qualifier in the USO. Her win there is almost next to impossible to be repeated ever again. I guess even if she wont win another grandslam soon, you cannot call that fluke. That is pure hardwork, exceptional talent and mindset.

Winning 10 matches and 20 sets in a row isn't a fluke. You can't get away with hitting out for that many matches, constantly hitting the lines and saving break points against world class players, unless you've got real talent.
