I don't think I will ever get bored of watching clips of Emma at this tournament. She's incredible and must be protected at all costs. I am fearful for the time when she loses a tight match (because she will lose a match at some point) and the media pile on her. There was no pressure on her this tournament. Now there is enormous pressure. I hope she continues to brush it off the way she did these three weeks.
Indeed, it's odd to think that as of yet she hasn't yet lost a slam match in a conventional manner - just that one withdrawal. She will have to face down that moment at some point; everybody does.
The best US Championship I can remember for a long time. Yes a pure fairy tale and one that will live forever in the memory. The reason we love sport. The reason we love tennis. Two teenagers in the final and a qualifier wins without dropping a set. Brilliant.
@@richardpierpoint3006 I don't question that Emma is British, I just pointed to the country where she was born. I remember Rusedski, who couldn't learn French in Montreal and chose to become a British citizen.
Surely a movie will be made about this journey. The script is perfect. From anxiety attack at the Wimbledon round of 16 to redemption and a perfect run of tennis at the US Open in a span of 3 months. This is so inconceivable and improbable that it will never be repeated again. This is the greatest sports story of the century.
The fairytale started well before Wimbledon, she was discovered playing tennis in a park, age 5 with her dad by a tennis coach, and he just happened to be head of tennis at her first school....
@Thuan Le As is sometimes said, "Truth is stranger than fiction" and "You couldn't make it up". 18 year old qualifier wins only the second Grand Slam Tournament she enters
Congrats to Emma, a qualifier. She’s the whole package. Talent, beauty, personality and youth. She’s the most marketable WTA champion since Jennifer Capriati. Hopefully she’ll be a leader in the sport for a decade or two. What a champion.
Capriati? Nope. There have been many better and more marketable players than Jennifer. But you are right about Emma she is the total package and her natural smile captivates everyone
@@rsb512 I agree. That's the retrospective view considering the whole career of Capriati. However, I think Steve refers exactly to the moment of the debut of Jennifer.
You couldn’t be more wrong. Jennifer Capriati was THE MOST MARKETABLE tennis player EVER. . . You likely weren’t around. She was huge. She was on the cover of Newsweek Magazine as a 13-year old!!!! She was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a 13-year old!! She made $6 Million in 1990 as a 14-year old! She had looks, personality, charisma and was the BEST YOUNG TENNIS PLAYER EVER. She won the Olympic Gold Medal at 16. She got sidetracked, made some mistakes. But no one was as marketable as the 13-year old Jennifer Capriati. She and Monica Seles could have broken all the records. But, things happen. Still had a great Hall of Fame career.
Incredible, when you watch this highlights package back and see her perform in near-empty courts in the qualifiers, you just realize what an unbelievable performance this is. One of the best sporting performances in the history of all sports.
Emma gave us one of the most exciting sport event memories. The first qualifier to win a Grand Slam without dropping a set. That record will never be broken.
Freeze frame at 8:00. This girl is on fire and that look in her eyes. . . .she is a killer. Pure determination. That's exactly what a champion looks like. And while it is exciting to watch I don't imagine any opponent opposite the net would like to face her cold resolve. What an exciting sports story. And then she transforms into such a polite and personal young woman after she tears through the field of seeded players. Priceless.
Very true. I also liked the look of pure "is this really happening?" that came out at 6:56 after the final point of the semi. Showed how focused she really was on one point at a time.
She reminds me of a female Roger Federer. She plays so effortlessly while her opponents are just running around at full speed trying to keep up. This girl is going to be around for a long time. So refreshing and intelligent and very easy on the eyes:).
Let's hope that creates a new beginning for tennis, no grunting, nor sqealing or tantrums on the court. These two girls should be an inspiration to others.
In terms of her playing style I'm reminded more of Agassi. Her game is built around a lethal return of serve that always gives her a platform to go hunting for service breaks. Couple that with a solid (if not spectacular) serve of her own, and an ability to strike the ball early on the rise, and she becomes an opponent that everyone is afraid of, who will tend to take part in exciting, dynamic matches.
What a great package! Sharp skills, humble personality, mature mentality and hardworking spirit! A real deal! A needed fresh air not only for tennis but also beyond competitive sports.
It's just so impressive how grounded someone can become in just 18 years! Building on such strong basis so early makes me believe we'll see great performances in the future. Thank you for that!
All the dark clouds hanging over us, global warming, Covid, Afghanistan, suddenly parted and a little ray of light called Emma broke through to remind us what life's about. She's not only talented but adorable, what a star.
Graham I agree but sports wise we also lost to Italy in football and I loved Emma's tweet, "We are bringing it home" referring to England as the motherland of tennis so she also lifted our spirits in the UK.
What an amazing story. From 150th ranked unknown to world famous in just weeks. Of course it took 13 years of hard work to get there with a lot of support from parents, coaches, and LTA.

I really wish the women went to 5 sets, because just imagine if that match had played out to 5. It could have been up there with Fed v Nadal in the rain at wimbledon for epicness.
She won 6-4 6-3. It would take a miracle and then some for that match to turn in to something resembling the Fed vs Nadal Wimbledon final. Fernandez would've had to come back from two sets down to begin with. Also, no disrespect to women, but there's a reason they don't play best of 5.
@@alibaba-vf5fc I know it was, it was very competitive, and would've potentially been a classic had it gone 3 sets. However, let's not get carried away and talk about Fed vs Nadal or women playing 5 sets.

Didn't lose a set and none of the sets went to tie break (after the qualifiers). The final match point was won on an ace for the cherry on the top. Pretty much a perfect run.
@@nelimashihrii3375 there wasn’t. She was taken to 7-5 in one set in qualifying, but the rest of her score lines look relatively smooth. She had to work for it in New York though. Every opponent was higher ranked than her in the tournament and most had far more experience of the game at the top level. Belinda Bencic, for example, was 12 in the world when Emma played her, but Emma came through by playing very well. Her progress through her quarter of the draw was remarkable for one so young and inexperienced.
@@tracyhodgkins7516 Her ranking was artificially low as she didn't play until the grass court season in June so her ranking was pretty much down to the 4th round in Wimbledon and the final of the challenger in Chicago as she didn't play a ranking tournament for 9 months of the year.. So covid, her education and inactivity was primarily the reason for her ranking. She did play in some 'Battle of the Brits' exhibition matches and you could clearly see that she was WAY better than 150 in the world. If she'd have been playing all year she'd have been in the top 100. Her play at Wimbledon was significantly above her ranking then (300 and something) or 150. That takes nothing away from the achievement however, she was ranked 150, she did win 3x qualifiers and she did with the title. Incredible.
Her smile and her style in that now iconic red blue and yellow outfit - oh - and that plaster on the knee, was always going to make her stand out, but then and above all else that skill, the determination, the game plan, the sportsmanship, the sheer fun she brings and the class have made her a star, but the way she did it, the outsider, the grit, the towering and momentous way she did it, will go down in history and will likely never be repeated. And beyond, she seems so unaffected, so self assured and she walks into the Met Gala like she owned the place. There simply are no words.
Emma is from my hometown, Bromley in Kent. We are all so happy for her just waiting for her to parade the us open trophy aroung the town, we are only a small town on the outskirts of London but we do produce champions. Well done Emma we are all really proud of you here at br1
Fairy tales are rare but it never happens that there is a fairy tale with a real fairy. Emma is a gem of a person, full of innocence, ethics , manners and all genuine. Her creator wanted to bless her for who she is. And there is no better way to bless then make her create history. What she has done is no record, because all records can be broken. She created a history which no one has witnessed before and no one ever will. May she always remain blessed
This only happens in movies. The underdog coming through in each round with flying colours and finally winning. What's more, she is beautiful and charismatic, just like the lead character in such movie. This is closest to any miracle I know!!!
After Emma’s wonderful success in New York, as a fellow Brit I really hope she is given time to develop and grow as a player without a stack of media pressure being put on her. Emma has incredible talent and no weaknesses in her game, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to win every single time she plays and she’s sensible enough to know that. What I would hate to see is Emma being put down in the papers if she decides to go to Indian Wells in October and loses early, or if she loses early in Australia next year. Emma has such great potential for a great career, but I think we have to support her sensibly. She’s played just 4 senior level tournaments in her young career, two of them were Grand Slams, Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round and the US Open, which, obviously, she won, but let’s not assume she’s going to win every match she plays just yet and then complain if she doesn’t. I hope we will all give her the time and space she will need to get used to life on the WTA tour, because if we give her time and space now, I have no doubt she will have every chance of reaching her potential.
I feel sure she will be looked after far better than Biles or Osaka (sp?) the USA has a win at any cost attitude which can be destructive, I never liked the way Serena played.
I was never really into women's tennis before, but I am now!! Emma has arguably done more for women's tennis than anyone in history. A superstar is born.
I'm also British so obviously biased, but the Williams sisters brought the market to the global african_american market. My argument is that Emma, assuming she can keep winning, will bring tennis and her brilliant smile, fluent Mandarin speaking and natural intelligence to a far larger market. And also she is gorgeous looking. I accept that shouldn't be a factor, but undoubtedly it is.
@@lanceleman7966 Like you say she could, were I'm saying the Williams sisters have done. Lets see how she goes, she may drift off into obscurity she may become the best ever. Yeah her looks are gonna help, she can't help being fit as a peach though so I won't hold that against her ;)

@@BOZ_11 Unfortunately I have to agree, Leylah herself said that her biggest takeaway from this tournament was that she plays better with the crowd on her side. It was quite transparent the way she tried to use the crowd to her advantage. Which is of course absolutely fine, but I don't think there was anything genuine about it.
@@BOZ_11 Contrived? Nah man, look up some of Leylah's other pressers from the tournament. She talked about the energy and resilience the crowd gives her the whole two weeks. Her runner-up speech was a summarizing conclusion to all that came before.

They’ve emerged at the same moment. They’re different from each other, but somehow compliment each other. Emma is unbelievably poised and striking in an interview.
So truly humble and such an inspiration , a world changing profile in all areas not just tennis. I have never felt so emotional about a sporting event and they go back to watching the 1966 World Cup through Damion Hill GP to England winning the Rugby World Cup and Andy Murray at Wimbledon, but this was a different level and I will take the memory of that moving 20th 9/11 Tribute and the winning Ace with me when I leave this planet. Emma you are a Princess to be honoured by the Queen of England, keeping smiling and keep our hopes of happiness alive.
Youthful Emma and Leylah have been working hard to hone their mad tennis skills for many years and, although Emma was a qualifier, she was well prepared for her maiden victory. I'm sure her and Leylah will have many competitive matches in coming years! Enjoyable to witness for sure 👍
You're the first person I've seen mention that she was well prepared for this victory. She's been a top junior player since she was 9 years old and people who follow grass roots tennis in the UK knew very well that one day she would burst onto the senior scene. Wimbledon was just the final stepping stone to what we see now. She's going to be a force to reckon with when she makes a final stride forward with her fitness and endurance. She's fit enough now to beat anyone but just wait until we see the finished product.
One of the best champs of all time! Why? Well spoken and humble!! I look forward to seeing her in more finals :) p.s that Leylah deserves a title as well
I get the distinct impression it won't be too long before Leylah breaks her duck in a slam, she was also phenomenal in this tournament and she's only a couple of months older than Emma. They're both going to be seeded now all next year because most of their ranking will come from this comp, we're going to be seeing a lot of them next year. Emma may soon be in the top 8.

Thankfully there was some support for Emma and she had a nice ovation at the end.
Watch her now got on some mad 10 year unbeaten run 😳😂

Surely a movie will be made about this journey. The script is perfect. From anxiety attack at the Wimbledon round of 16 to redemption and a perfect run of tennis at the US Open in a span of 3 months. This is so inconceivable and improbable that it will never be repeated again. This is the greatest sports story of the century.
And it's right up there with the greatest sports stories of all time.
If she hadn't had the anxiety attack at Wimbledon she might have won that as well !!!
Leicester City winning the premier league is up there!
And like Capriati, but keep away from the hard drugs and battering people like the said lady.

@@martinforrester8249 they were great to watch and Emmas smile had me smiling all through the game,
I prefer the butch, plain Eastern European women champions! 😬

The Emma and Leylah match was one of the best matches I have seen in a while. It was even better than the men's finals.

Perfect script for a film

Nah Leicester city winning the premier league was more unexpected
The best I've read since her win! 😊
I feel sure she will be looked after far better than Biles or Osaka (sp?) the USA has a win at any cost attitude which can be destructive, I never liked the way Serena played.
