My mama was born in 1929 and wore her hair in a style similar to yours. She wore Tabu Red lipstick. You couldn’t take it off with a blowtorch. The closest I’ve found to it is Revlon Cherries in the Snow. A true blue red. I love it so much.

Vermont Country Store carries four Tabu colors, that could be fun to try.

I was a teen in the 70’s and learned to do makeup from my mom’s friend who learned in the 50’s. I was taught to apply, blot with a tissue, lightly powder over your lips, apply a second time, and lightly blot again. that would turn a so-so formula into a nice long lasting matte.
I’m not sure if that technique used to be common? I kept at it until the mac matte came out in the late 80’s. It was fun to see you try those shades that have been around forever though! I’m off to checkout beauty bakery!

I feel you on the lip pigment, when doing my moms makeup I end up using a lighter concealer on her lip 1st to get even color. Thank you for the test of the lipstick shades on deeper skin shades, it's helpful and saves $$$. Love that pink would look cute if you had a complete pink makeup look with blush and eyeshadow, with a pink outfit. I also like the last one best, like the reds that lean to berry or burgandy.

Makes some sense because what happens at 5:03 definitely concurs with what I was noticing, and that would be so annoying! For me personally, the upper lip/lower lip problem is that my upper lip just has no definition at all, so even if I try to do lip liner, I just end up with a crummy upper lip no matter what I try. I recently read the tip you're talking about, and it improved matters slightly, but not much. I can see how it might be helpful on someone with lips more pigmented than my pale ones. Have to think it must be so helpful to anyone of similar pigmentation and skin shade to Serena to see how these lipsticks not originally made for or marketed to POC turn out. For me as someone white with pale-mauve and ill-defined lips, I got 99 lipstick problems but having my natural lip color show through the lipstick ain't one.

I know I'm lighter, but, I can relate to trying to find a good red that lasts. The best one I've come across is Maybelline 24 Super Stay lip color. The colors "Keep Up The Flame" and "Optic Ruby" have the the most vintage look. They aren't exaggerating when they say it will last 24 hours, unless like the brand you mentioned, you eat something oily.
My Mama was darker complected. She wore a beautiful shade of red her entire life and they still make it, Avon's Chery Jubilee. I actually have a tube and wish it came in a long wear formula, it would be perfect.

Mentioned the video to my mom, and the moment I mentioned how amazed I was to discover that my 1980s fave Raven Red was from 1945, she chimed in mentioning a few Revlon shades she was pretty sure were introduced while she was in high school. Bingo! She correctly called that Love That Red debuted in 1951, which would be either spring of her ninth-grade year or fall of her sophomore year. She also has owned Fire and Ice as well as Certainly Red and Cherries 🍒 in the Snow 🌨 , which she also remembered well once I mentioned it.

Putting a little foundation on your lips will help the lipstick show up on a completely bright white canvas, these lipsticks are meant for lips covered in foundation so no matter skincolor, it won't show up well on anyone beside being a smudgy yet elegant version of how it would look in full showcase.

  • @lunallena5594
    @lunallena5594 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hi! Thanks for the video. I normally buy wet n wild liquid lipsticks so I'm used to less lipstick maintenance, but I like the creamy glide of Revlon. I've also had a harder time with finding a close powder and foundation even though I'm peachy pink pale. l read a library book from Bobbi Brown that people should mix their colors to find the right shade. I guess it works within the same brand/lines/finishes, but I would try that with brands I can splurge and play with.

I love the nyx shine lipsticks. They are dual ended one end is the colour the other end is the top gloss. But im telling you they last for at least 2 days. 13.00 and they last ,very pigmented, non transfer( not even when i eat)! I dont normally use the gloss but it doesnt take it off.
You should look at Beseme vintage inspired makeup collection online. They have all the glamourous bullet red lipstick shades of the 40's and 50's shown on different skin tones. Cake mascara, face powder all in retro vintage packaging.

If you order a white lipstick, yes there is white, use it as a base color before you put on your lip sticks. It will keep the color the same on both lips, and it will help the color pop.
Since you don't use face concealer or foundation. Foundation can be used in the same manor.

The colors might be the same, but they definitely aren’t the same formula which would make a huge difference. There we many artificial red dyes that were banned in the 60’s and many lipsticks had lead in them, like the paint of the time.

The old school way to more pigment and matte is to blot, apply layer press tissue between lips, repeat like three times total. The last press removes the shiny quality for a more matte lipstick

For anybody thinking, "Well, I would love to be part of her Patreon, but that sounds pricey," turns out it's actually just $4 a month. You'd be surprised how hard it is for some of your favorite creators to put together what they need to be able to afford to do what we all love.

After watching my way through the whole video (love the story about how your daughter thinks she still has lipstick on and is happy even though it's actually completely gone within minutes) (also bummed that the texture of Certainly Red doesn't work for you, because the minute you said you like blue-red better, that was the one I was waiting to see as a long-time Certainly Red 💄 owner), I'm suddenly interested in exploring whether there's a way to find out what brands and shades women of similar hue wore back in the day. I like digging through newspaper and magazine archives, but of course _Essence_ doesn't start until 1970, so that particular title isn't going to be a help. Any thoughts what periodicals might be around from back then that would have lipstick ads directed toward a Black audience? It's something I'd be happy to research for you if I could just get a starting place.
BTW that reminds me to ask whether you are familiar with the Facebook page Vintage Black Glamour. It seems to be dormant now, but a couple of years ago they came out with a book or two after years of putting up fabulous posts of historical figures and celebs.

Jet and Ebony were started before Essence. There was also one called Sepia. It might also help to start with celebrities of the time like Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, etc and see if there are interviews with their makeup artists. Max Factor is another start.

@@stilettodivah thanks for the tips. Max Factor, much to my dismay, quit being manufactured here in the United States after whatever company owns Cover Girl bought it and essentially killed it off. They didn't appreciate what they had, and unrivaled makeup products I had been buying for years disappeared from the shelves. Can't even get them from overseas because they don't make the same products under that company.

@@SewRena LOL ... that spring, I was in a student-run production of _M*A*S*H_ (script based on the movie, not the TV show) where we rehearsed 2 hours a day the first three months, then "6 - ?" the final month. I played Bridget McCarthy, a huge role that nobody who only watched the show had ever heard of, so I was in all but two rehearsals the entire time. Tired of having the boys tease me about my super-dark lipstick, when I went to the drugstore with my ex-boyfriend the director to pick up more makeup for the production, asked him to help me pick out another 💄 shade for myself so the boys would shut up about it. Problem solved, I figured. No more teasing for the rest of April, whole month of May. School yearbooks come out at the end of the year, and a boy I've had a crush on the entire year who is part of the cast signs my yearbook ... with a message that concludes, *_glad you got rid of that dark lipstick_* ! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 🤣
