you probably won't read this but i hope you do: could you make a video about soaps (liquid versus bar)? some people claim that bar soaps have bacterial buildup when its not quite true due to their extreme basic pH and claim that this bacteria buildup will result in acne breakouts.. it's so frustrating and i would love to hear you talk about it!
Ooh I second this. I'd love to know if the format of a soap (e.g. liquid, gel, cream, solid bar, powder, etc.) affects how "hygienic" it is, or if it's purely a matter of user preference!
As an Asian, I've seen many Korean cosmetic brands have this kind of brick tone colors like Romand, Innisfree, and Missha since it's a tone that fits well with Asian skin tone, but the finish is not quite glossy and luster, it's more on the matte side. Some Chinese cosmetic brands have that kind of tone as well, like Zeesea and Perfect Diary, and the finish is shinier and feels more moisturizing
Omg... Thanks for all those recommendations! I've been trying for so long to find a dupe to a Terracotta that Clinique discontinued ages ago. It was the first lipstick I ever wore, gifted to me by my cousin... I loved it, but I haven't been able to get anything close to that shade ever since.
I had a 2-color gradient lip bar from Laneige in a really nice terracotta but now that I went to look it up I saw they discontinued it... Though it barely lasted longer than a lip gloss so maybe it's not that much of a surprise :)
Asian cosmetics don't have reddish lipsticks because they fit Asian skin tones, but because they're trendy or popular. Asians can wear any lip color and have many different skin colors.
It was great! I hope you do more of these on other makeup products, would love to hear more about eyeshadow formulations and especially what makes certain formulas more expensive...is it really just the ingredients, the way the ingredients are pressed, or both. Based on just ingredient lists sometimes it is very hard to tell.
I've worn brick and red-brown lipstick tones since high school in the early 90's, though my preference has since included orange-y reds as well. As a southeast asian gal, brick shades are the only ones that suit my complexion.
Ooh I just saw your natural lip color. I love it so much!! Beeeeautiful...!! I’d love to see you with a clear lip balm more often, your natural lip color is lovely.
This was cool! I’d love to see a video like this about mascara, what makes them different (is it just the brush?) Why does a brand have 5 different formulas (marketing?) What the heck is tubing? Why is a mascara holy grail for one person and worst thing ever for another?
I think the Maybelline universal skin tone line in Spice for Me is as close as I've gotten in recent years to a nice burnt orange, thanks for a few others I can check out
Zero judgement about using an old lipstick from me! Although you might find something similar from Shu Uemura as they have a huge collection of reds and many are available in different finishes. I'm still going to take your recommendations on board though because I love a good brick red ❤️
Great video! Especially with the lipstick shades and the lipstick reveal! I also still have my Teeez lipstick in Casual Aubergine. And your description of the formula is spot on! Lipstick is my vice and although I purge a portion of my collection every 2 or so years, I still continue to acquire...which I need to quit doing, but that's another story.
Oh I’ve been commenting and admiring your lip color(s) for years. Obviously we don’t share the same skin tone, however, oranges and reds look killer on me as well. That color is stunning!
Thank you so much for making this video! It was the exact info I was hoping to get from you: moisturizing lip color that doesn’t cost a fortune + cool science facts. I really appreciate that I can trust you to give your honest opinion on products.
Yes! I love brick colored lipsticks. I've been using a Milani one forever but I'm probably going to give that Revlon one a try. Their lipstick formula is great.
Lisa Eldrige's new Velvet Dragon shade seems like a good color, although it's matte, bit not drying at all. I have dry lips and her lipsticks keep my lips moisturize. But she started realising lip glosses to match some of her existing shades, so maybe if you like the shade there might be a gloss in that shade coming up...
Brick colours are definitely big nowadays in Japan and Korea, I studied in Japan for a few months until early this year and this kind of colours were everywhere! When I talked to a shop assisstant while picking a 3CE lipstick shade she recommended me this kind of colour because it's a very popular bestseller.
PLEASE DO MORE LIKE THIS VIDEO! More with colors, dupes, formulas of any type of makeup at all. It is fascinating to learn about how these items are made. Also those dupes are gorgeous! Will you tell me what brands or formulas of lipstick for aging lips? Also will you tell us more about liquid lipsticks and how they do what they do? THANK YOU 🤩🤩🤩
Great video! Love all your videos so much! It's a real shame that companies phase out colors because of "trends." Many people need those colors to go well with their skin tone, and skin tone is never a "trend."
Lots of Korean brands do brick colors, especially since MAC Chili is still super popular overseas. The undertones all vary shade to shade, but it’s rare for a Korean release to not have some sort of brick color. I think similar colors + same shiny finish could be: - Romand Juicy Lasting Tint in Apple Brown or from the Autumn Series, Eat Dotori - Romand Glasting Water Tint in Brick River - APieu Water Light Tint in RD06 Maple - APieu Juicy Pang Tint in CR03 Jujube, RD03 Lychee, CR02 Persimmon - Coringco Cherry Chu Bonny Lipstick in Vintage Brown - Holika Holika Heart Crush Lipstick Melting in Retro Brick - Mamonde Creamy Tint Color Balm Intense in Red Pepper - PeriPera Ink Tint Serum in Copper Brick or Baked Red (or the Stick Serum version in Brick Title) - Canmake Stay-On Balm in T04 Chocolate Lily (very sheer balm, but still that sort of brick color. And it has SPF!)
I have a few suggestions that work for my complexion (my skin is at least 3 shades deeper than yours); 1. Mac - chili 2. Benecos - catwalk (I've had it for two years and now it has this weird grainy texture you pointed out) 3. Ink velvet - 12 (Korean brand, liquid lipstick) Bonus; Pat Mcgrath - Obsessed (Quite orange, I can wear it only with a decent amount of foundation, but she makes really good matte lipsticks) Good luck with your search and always love your content 💕
If you want a similar burnt orange color, Lisa Eldridge True Velvet Lip Color in Velvet Dragon was released recently and it's super high quality. It's matte and not shiny but you could always just put a gloss on top. Brick colors are fairly popular in Korean lip products. Romand Zero Velvet Tint in Rusk Rusk, Romand Juicy Lasting Tint in Apple Brown, and 3CE Mood Recipe 2 #220 Hit Me Up are all somewhat close as examples. I'm sure there's a bunch more out there that I don't know of.
Charlotte Tilbury stoned rose is not as terracotta as the shade you’ve mentioned but they are of the same colour family and their formula is quite moisturising. YLS vinyl cream in 416 psychedelic chilli may be a dupe in colour however it is a liquid formula rather than a lipstick. But I have to say this formula feels super comfortable on the lips.
Michelle I just realized something! I have been obsessing over finding sunscreen in tinted lip balm. But as you have just said, lipsticks contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to give it opaqueness. So maybe I don’t need to try to find the best sunscreen lip balm, I can just use a nude color lipstick.
Michelle will definitely know more about this than me, but I do not think you can do that for the same reason you can't use diaper cream, which has zinc oxide, as sunscreen.
Unfortunately white pigmentary zinc oxide and titanium dioxide has larger particles that don't absorb UV well - when it's ground up into smaller particles it gets better at absorbing UV and also gets more invisible. Soz :(
Lab Muffin Beauty Science I don’t know why lipsticks do not contain sunscreen. Essentially we go around without any protection on our lips which as you say need touching up all the time because whatever we put on them wears off most quickly
@@hiyacynthia I agree, more lipsticks should have sunscreen! There's a brand in Australia called Face of Australia who did a really nice line of SPF 30 lipsticks, unfortunately they're really difficult to find. There are also a lot of SPF lip balms coming out now.
If you're looking for all mineral tinted lip balm, Coola makes one but it has fragrance. Colorescience makes a multi stick that's fragrance free that you can use as lip balm, blush and eyeshadows. I've used the Coola ones before Colorescience came up with that multi stick. It was alright. A bit drying and I really don't like the scent. Now I've been wearing a mask even when I'm outside, but if I'll be wearing tinted lip balms I'd invest in the Colorescience for sure
Great video as always! If possible I would love a DIY video with moisturising face mist, or just simply a video about face mists in general. I feel like Im wasting money on water that doesnt actually contain anything of value, but without it my skin crumbles haha.

Shiseido Sleeping Dragon is a similar colour. Its a bit sheerer, but the formula is really unique. It goes on really smoothly, like a lip balm, but dries down to a texture you would expect from a satin lipstick. Plus the name is amazing!

Hey Michelle, i have watched your videos in past but recently found you again so subscribed. I have been hooked on the info you share. I have been trapped by the clean beauty thought process for quite some yrs until i researched more and understood that's it is more brain washing marketing strategy. I am an eco conscious person and so i try to be rational with what to buy or not. But brands claiming clean are pricey, have low shelf life and bashing non organic ingredients without much evidence. So i went back to the products which were working good for me in the past(be it Sles/sls or parabens or preservatives). But I still want to be mindful and don't want to buy absolutely trash products. Anyways, i love this idea of yours of talking about the science behind the product plus your preferences🙈. So pls continue making them, be it skincare, haircare or color cosmetics basics. It would be nice if you also mention, what ingredients you avoid.
It might be worth trying EM Cosmetics’ True Gloss in Red Jasper. Totally different formula, but it might provide a similar glossy finish and brick color. I find their formula to be very comfortable.
Hi Michelle! I've been following you after having been scared out of my mind by some clean beauty claims. I love your science! One ingredient that I still obsessively worry about is BHT. My old favorite contains it. Is it really an ingredient I should be concerned about? Thank you in advance!
great video! A bit unrelated, but Dr Dray mentions that Korean sunscreens with only one uva and one uvb "chemical" filter (such as Purito or Dear Klairs) may not provide sustained protection compared to sunscreens that have multiple filters for uva and uvb, but she isn't quite sure. would you be able to make a video on this, if you are interested?
Besame has some lovely bricks! I think Chocolate Kiss is their go-to brick red but I've got a few others on my list. I've also heard good things about how moisturizing their lipsticks are. Hope you'll share if you find more brands and bricks you love! 😎
You should try LA Girl. It's an American drugstore brand that isn't as well known as Revlon. I don't remember the names of the shades but I remember a few shades that are very close.
Oh you should try the Etude house Better lips talk. A huge variety and it's got great brick type shades. I have quite a few. They're very moisturising and have great pigmentation.
Korean brands like 3CE have LOTS of bricks and burnt oranges, and in a few different formulas. I’m dying to try some but as a deathly pale ‘lemon yellow’ human I’m not sure it’s going to look nice LOL Loved this video, I’ve always been curious about lipstick form a chemical point of view💜
That's a tricky one! I think putting anything on top could potentially compromise the layer, although you could try to blot it on very carefully without too much dragging. A better solution might be to use an SPF lip gloss on top, or try to find an SPF-rated lipstick.
Ah , I think someone else mentioned it already, but you could try Lisa Eldridge's lipstick in dragon! Unfortunately, I think it's sold out at the moment, but her liptsitcks have such a comfortable formula.

Hey Muffin :), What do you think about "colored lip balm?" It looks a bit like lipstick but can be a bit smudgy, but it is good for my conscience to use for my lip health/care. Am i wrong? :).
Hi Michelle, I have a lipstick that looks similar to yours. Supernova from Bobbi Brown Luxe Shine Intense Lipstick. Let me know if you are Able to try it and if you find it similar!
I got the toast of new york one from revlon..was not sure it would fit my skin but it does!! I have neutral skin colour and although i have dark hair I am really pale...also the quality us spot on...shame i live in Europe..I love revlon
I have no idea if you've discussed this anywhere, but does non-spf lipstick provide any sun protection? It seems like adding oily lipbalms over long lasting lipsticks and liquids will remove them. I'd love to wear lip colors outside but also wanna protect them!
Mostly just branding and marketing - sometimes smaller companies are more expensive because they don't have economy of scale. Packaging can be a (relatively) big factor too.
Sensai Rouge Vibrant Cream Colour in VC05 Tsutsuji is a excellent brick red if you want something creamy and slightly sparkling. Expensive, but very dependable hydrocarbon formula.

Could you make this into a series? Deep dive into each generic cosmetic product maybe?
Lisa Eldridge has a brick red matte called Velvet Jazz.
It might be worth trying EM Cosmetics’ True Gloss in Red Jasper. Totally different formula, but it might provide a similar glossy finish and brick color. I find their formula to be very comfortable.

Your smile is infectious ❤️
Hi Michelle! I've been following you after having been scared out of my mind by some clean beauty claims. I love your science! One ingredient that I still obsessively worry about is BHT. My old favorite contains it. Is it really an ingredient I should be concerned about? Thank you in advance!
Loved this! Thanks!
My fav lip of all times was Rochas. I love that brand as lipstick... best texture ever :)
What do you think of polythene or polybutylene in cosmetics? Aren’t they not safe for marine life?really love to know!❤️
great video!
I'm planning to do an in-depth one on sunscreens - hopefully before the end of the year! I'm still waiting on some data 😊
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience that's so great, can't wait!
Besame has some lovely bricks! I think Chocolate Kiss is their go-to brick red but I've got a few others on my list. I've also heard good things about how moisturizing their lipsticks are. Hope you'll share if you find more brands and bricks you love! 😎
Try the Nars Audacious lipstick range. They have good shade description on their website along with swatch photos.
Hi Michelle,
Nude by Nature moisture shine lipstick in garnet might be a pretty close dupe or Karen Murrell #21 Fiery Ruby (a bold terracotta)
You should try LA Girl. It's an American drugstore brand that isn't as well known as Revlon. I don't remember the names of the shades but I remember a few shades that are very close.
I love that brick colour. Always have - since the 80s!!
Similar video for lip tints will be amazing
Oh you should try the Etude house Better lips talk. A huge variety and it's got great brick type shades. I have quite a few. They're very moisturising and have great pigmentation.
Loved this ❤️
Korean brands like 3CE have LOTS of bricks and burnt oranges, and in a few different formulas. I’m dying to try some but as a deathly pale ‘lemon yellow’ human I’m not sure it’s going to look nice LOL
Loved this video, I’ve always been curious about lipstick form a chemical point of view💜
Can you please link the brand and shade name of the colour your are wearing in this video? xxx😍
Hi Michelle, if you have applied spf to your lips how do you suggest to wear lipstick on top without ruining the spf?
That's a tricky one! I think putting anything on top could potentially compromise the layer, although you could try to blot it on very carefully without too much dragging. A better solution might be to use an SPF lip gloss on top, or try to find an SPF-rated lipstick.
Do you have any videos or reviews on the brand alpha-h? Would love to know your thoughts on the brand/line.
Ah , I think someone else mentioned it already, but you could try Lisa Eldridge's lipstick in dragon! Unfortunately, I think it's sold out at the moment, but her liptsitcks have such a comfortable formula.

Could you do a scientific video on gel nails? That would be amazing!
Hey Muffin :),
What do you think about "colored lip balm?" It looks a bit like lipstick but can be a bit smudgy, but it is good for my conscience to use for my lip health/care.
Am i wrong? :).
Like you said it is difficult to find moisturizing lipstick.
The NYX butter line of lipsticks and glosses has the finish you want. I bet they have a similar shade too.
Hi, what makes some lipsticks more expensive than others? or is it just branding and marketing
I would love to see you in cool lipcolors. I think they would look more harmonious on your complexion 😅
Great video! Beautiful lip colour! 😸🐾💙🌻🐦✌
