I cannot for the life of me think how a bicycle clip would go on a hat, but, bicycle clips are those circular things people put around the bottom (ankles) of their trouser legs, to stop the fabric getting caught up in the bicyle chain. I swear I have not seen or even thought of bicycle clips since the end of the 1960s or very early 70s! Your hats and your ideas for hats are wonderful!
Yes, A piece of curved metal - so popular back then that women ocouod easily lay their hands on one and I assume you'd straighten it out into a curve and use for the hat shaping. It was a sort of horeshoe shape.
There is also a bicycle clip that works like a large Bobby pin. You just pull the pant cuff together on the outside 😅and slide it on. Something like that might be what it is.
Love that you’re making hats! Just dropped down to say you in the maternity outfit reminds me of what pregnant women used to look like. You are just so amazingly cute!
I had no idea how badly I need a reversible beret in my life! Preparing to make Charm Patterns Scout Hat as my first hat, and OMG, the pink floral and the others you made are giving me sew many ideas! 👒 🎩 🧢
My sister is a seamstress who has done professional work for several theater companies, and as her helper I can attest to how hard some of these hats can be to make! It feels like a foreign world to me, although I've been sewing my entire life. I love to wear a pretty hat to church, but I'm sad that women no longer wear hats in day-to-day life. I'm counting on you to bring the fashion back with your talent and enthusiasm!
Sewrena, hats off to you for even ATTEMPTING to make your own hats! (Sorry about that truly awful pun.) Millinery is a skill that people trained for years to acquire and perfect, so its no mean feat to try to learn how to DIY hats. Those are all beautiful....Im a hat fan myself. But wow, its hard to find pretty hats these days.....
I wish we could go back to the times that you look like. I was born in 1965. I remember those days of hats. You’re so cute, sweet and modest a d I love it! You’re a breath of fresh air!! Your figure and your clothes are amazing!!!
All so lovely, just like all of your clothes I see on We Sew Retro! For future videos, feel free to show us more of each, try them on, take your time. It fascinates us all! ☺💖 Deb
I'm so glad I found your channel! The christmas hat is my favorite. I love that you use leftovers for the lining. You've inspired me to give hats a try!
When I was young I worked beside a Millinery department. I was always fascinated by the women’s choices they made. Also I remember the price of the hats were half of what my dad made in a week. Wow! I was too young to wear these elaborate hats. But l always wanted one. My favorite hat you made was the white lace with pearls, it is beautiful!
A bicycle clips are/were used to clip your pant leg together at the bottom so they didn't get in the way of the bicycle chain! It's a really old thing, I can remember seeing photos of my grandfather wearing them
You are so incredibly talented!! And thank you for sharing the parts that were difficult or that you were not especially happy with - sewing skills must be practiced - you cannot learn them from reading or watching only - you must practice! It was nice to see the progression of your skill level with each hat & I love that you use whatever supplies/scrapes you have around - it is very “make due & mend” period appropriate for your beautiful 40’s aesthetic. I look forward to seeing more of your work!
Thank you so much! I have learned so much, I try and keep notes of my mistakes and the changes that I’ve made ,or the materials that were a suitable substitute for others. The best part of using scrap is you always have the perfect matching accessories. Thank you so much for watching❤️
omg. all so lovely but my faves are the wedding lace, heart pill box, and the brown one you wore with the briches. i bought vintage hat patterns a few months back and this gave me the push to start on them. one of the patterns is the red one lined with green. thanks for showing us your beautiful work and for the motivation!
I love hats! As a kid I used to love going into the bridal shops. My favorite style to look at was the tear drop hat with little mesh face cover. I thought it was just so fancy. Sometimes the ladies would let me try them on. Every picture of you in your hats is beautiful. You look spectacular in the New Year’s picture.
Love hats too. I made a 1950s hat with fabric I have and wear it when it's cold . It's not perfect, but I love it. I have a couple of patterns for hats and when I get the time, I l think of those patterns often too, it s coming.... . Keep inspiring.
Not sure how I missed this video. Wonderful, creative hats! You’re amazing. I love hats, but so far I’ve only crocheted a couple of 1920s/1930s cloche hats. I wear a vintage rhinestone brooch on the hats. Great for a bad hair day.
All are nice, I love your style. I am into vintage also, but you got me. Enjoyed, I love the hats, especially the one u put roses on. Girl uou got it going on, keep it up. That era was ladies.
I've never seen anyone attemp to make their own hats. These are fantastic! Just lovely! I could be wrong, but I think grosgrain (ribbon) is pronounced as grow-grain. I think the o is a long sound and the s is silent. But maybe my mom and grannies were pronouncing it wrong all my life.
I know that you turn a lot heads in your town as you go around in those beautiful vintage creations especially with matching hats and gloves. Where do you get the supplies for your hats and half hats?

Thank you so much for that information I searched and searched and couldn’t come up with anything. I love this community
Bicycle clips, when one is talking about hats, is basically just a metal headband.

I had no idea how badly I need a reversible beret in my life! Preparing to make Charm Patterns Scout Hat as my first hat, and OMG, the pink floral and the others you made are giving me sew many ideas! 👒 🎩 🧢
