History Expansion of NATO Member Countries (1949 - 2024)

To counter the threat from the Soviet Union after World War II, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was established on 4 Apr 1949 with 12 founding member countries. It includes the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Luxembourg.
Timeline:
0:05 Apr 1949: NATO was created by 12 countries from Europe and North America
0:26 Feb 1952: Greece and Türkiye joined NATO
0:30 May 1955: After signing the Bonn Treaty, West Germany gained sovereignty and joined NATO
0:43 May 1982: Spain joined the Alliance on 30 May 1982 despite considerable public opposition.
1:02 Mar 1999: Three former Warsaw Pact countries joined after the end of the Cold War
1:07 On 29 March 2004, 7 countries officially became members of the Alliance, making this the largest wave of enlargement in NATO history.
1:13 Apr 2009: Albania and Croatia joined NATO
1:20 Jun 2017: The Accession Protocol was signed in May 2016 and Montenegro became a member of the Alliance on 5 June 2017.
1:24 Mar 2020: On 27 March 2020, North Macedonia became NATO's 30th member.
1:29 Apr 2023: Finland becomes NATO's 31st member country.
1:32 Mar 2024: Sweden becomes NATO's 32nd member country.
