    13:14 You mention the April 2008 Bucharest Summit, where it was stated that Georgia and Ukraine will become future members of NATO; and Russia's negative reaction. You omit to mention the 2008 Georgian War that followed that summer - quite an important event and a foreshadowing of what might happen to Ukraine. Russia could not countenance Crimea (especially) becoming part of NATO.

    2 important things I learned:
    1, Bill Clinton's quote to Gorbachev "not one inch east" was referring to Germany, not NATO as a whole.
    2, It's not the NATO made Putin's efforts for peace difficult, they just didn't respond.
    Honestly a really good video, other than Kuwait being omitted from the video, but then, it wasn't that NATO was involved, it was merely just NATO members, which Kuwait was not one of.

    A bit disappointed that there was no mention of the Yugoslav-Soviet split in 1948, when Yugoslavia proclaimed itself to be non-aligned and adopted a different, more left-wing style of socialism in the coming years. It was quite a tense period, but after Stalin's death, Khruschev reconciled with Yugoslavia, which was now in okay terms with both the West and the East.

    • @jeffbenton6183
      @jeffbenton6183 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@abuzarAQ3 I'll add 3 things to what Cochet said:
      1) Finland's military equipment and command structure is much more "interoperable" with NATO forces than Ukraine (even during the Cold War, Finland relied on military equipment that was either Western, or designed to be sold to Western countries, such as certain Swedish weaponry. On the other hand, Ukraine was part of the USSR and used exclusively Soviet equipment. It takes time to transition to Western arms, or modify existing ones to work well with Western equipment - not to mention modernizing everything so it doesn't become obsolete)
      2) A big part of the reason why some NATO nations didn't want Ukraine to join was because they were trying to prevent a war with Russia. Now that Ukraine (but not NATO) *has* an all-out war with Russia, which they may actually win (with NATO support - even without direct NATO intervention) the situation has changed. When this war is over, NATO nations will likely try to fast-track the entry of whatever's left of the Ukraine into the Alliance.
      3) Finland hasn't been seriously considering membership quite as long as Ukraine, and has only jumped on board *after* this war started. If they had tried earlier, they likely would've been rejected for the same reasons that the Ukraine has been stalled. Finland and Sweden were rather committed to neutrality until recently. It was only in 2014 that a bare majority (or plurality - I forgot which) supported NATO membership - and that was only according to polls, not an actual vote. Because of the war, membership is much more popular in Sweden and Finland. There probably was never a time when Finland would be allowed to join and the Ukraine would not be allowed to join. It's sort of an "apples-to-oranges" comparison.

    • @jeffbenton6183
      @jeffbenton6183 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@abuzarAQ3 I should add one more thing about why Ukrainian membership in NATO would be more offensive to Russia than Finish membership: their shared history. Finland has not been a part of Russia since the end of World War I, whereas the Ukraine has only been fully independent for 30 years. That didn't stop the Baltic states from joining NATO, which are also former members of the USSR, but the Ukrainians are also much more ethnically similar to the Russians than the Finns, Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians (especially the Finns). The Muscovite Rus actually branched off *from* the Kievan Rus during the Middle Ages, there's a sense in Russia that they're basically One People (there's even an English word that academics use to refer collectively to the Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians - "Ruthenian")
      EDIT: I should add the Peter the Great was called "Emperor of *All* the Russias," by which was meant the Ruthenian countries. My understanding is that each of the czars who succeeded him, up until the Revolution inherited that title.

      @@smorcrux426 Yes, Czechoslovakia was democratic before the war, and in a short episode after it. It can be said that the last democratic elections were used by the Communists as well as Hitler in pre-war Germany. By 1989, the elections were no longer free (I experienced that). The communist coup averted the Russian occupation, which did not occur until 1968. The Soviet Union feared that a democratic establishment was forming in Czechoslovakia. Under the pretext of cleansing from Western collaborators and the resistance, there was an invasion led by a Russian general, whose statue was recently removed from Prague. That is why the map of Czechoslovakia in the post-war years is in a different color - we could not be part of the Soviet military pact that attacked us. Austria was lucky in the disaster - the Soviet Union commanded it to disarm and neutrality. Austrian citizens liked the neutrality so much that they incorporated it into the constitution in the 1990s.

      What I've heard on the matter is this: Part of NATO membership is integration. Due to how much Soviet-era equipment the Ukraine has, it was estimated that - even as late as 2020 - it would take years for Ukraine to achieve sufficient interoperability with NATO (they had been receiving significant imports and gifts of NATO weaponry ever since 2014, but it still wasn't enough; I also don't mean to say that no Soviet equipment is sufficiently interoperable, but it does need to be modified and modernized.
      EDIT: I should add that Finland and Sweeden are much closer to being integrated with NATO, so their membership path should be relatively quick.

      @@stephenjenkins7971 This video omits the part where the US as part of NATO broke the UN embargo on Yugoslavia and secretly smuggled weapons and jihadists in. This was reported in _TheGuardian._ Which jihadists? The Afghan mujahedeen. A US official closely involved later said on PBS that it was actually ALQaeda.
      Later in Kosovo Yugoslavia was fighting the KLA, which trained in AQ camps. NATO responded by bombing Yugoslavia, often with uranium or cluster bombs and on civilian centers - hospitals, a train, radio station, a marketplace, and even China's embassy. This event changed Russia and China from neutral to hostile. Most in the West are oblivious to how big this was even though both countries continue to bring it up.

    • @stephenjenkins7971
      @stephenjenkins7971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@hermanwooster8944 You're omitting important facts here too. UN sanctions on Yugoslavia has no effect on nations that seceded from Yugoslavia, thus has no application on the likes of Croatia, Montenegro, or Kosovo for example; thus nations trading with these new countries did not break with the UN over anything.
      Also, the US didn't smuggle anything to these countries to begin with, or jihadists, what is this insane BS you're spouting here?
      The KLA has connections with jihadists, I'm sure; but they're not literal jihadists as their goal was an independent Kosovo; not the creation of Islamist principles. And it was the Bosnian Genocide and the later authoritarian actions of the Yugoslav government that forced the US to step in via bombing them to cease their actions.
      If stopping genocide made Russia and China hostile, then maybe that's a problem with them for being so pro-genocide.
      Edit: Also, this video talked about nothing in regards to that. Just admit that you're a fascist imperialist and be done with it; because you're making up a bunch of crap and unironically defending the ones committing genocide here.

      Sweden in WWII was _NOT_ "closely tied" with Germany. They sold iron (a lot) to Germany. And ball bearings to both the UK and Germany (so both sides). Sweden had to allow the transit of German troops to Norway (when they had control, not for invading), an aggreement they really couldn't avoid without a high risk of occupation, for 3 years.
