I'm a guitarist and found myself watching this through to the end because there's lessons, smarts and philosophy of great value to all musicians and actually, anyone involved in creative endeavors of any kind. Peart brought me here and I'm quite seriously heartbroken over his passing. Been binging on interviews with him; so insightful and articulate. May he be at peace.

DRUM CHANNEL (and many others) have the POWER to bring together all kinds of incredible musicians, to make improvs they'd never do otherwise. (EX: everyone LOVED the rhythm section of BILL BRUFORD and CHRIS SQUIRE, who never worked together again.... but any major company could've brought those cats in for ONE DAY to improvise and tear it up.) EX: Drum Channel calls up COBHAM and JAN HAMMER, and asks the two of them to come in and just improvise for a few hours!
it's insane how badly organized the music biz is! DC and many others could EASILY have brought in Neil Peart, and an incredible bassist (ex: Les Claypool), and an incredible guitarist (let's say Bumblefoot) and just have them IMPROVISE for afew hours! #@!!! SO MANY missed opportunities.

"Some are born to move the world -
    To live their fantasies
But most of us just dream about
The things we’d like to be
Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it
For you - the blind who once could see -
The bell tolls for thee"…. Well Neil...The bell tolls for you kind sir. You inspired me and so many to live those words to the fullest. You were without peer. R.I.P.

I’ve been reading his last book recently and he makes a comment about the end of Rush as well as others things he’s done in the past “I’m not sad it’s over but more grateful for having had the experience.” Taking this as a form of advice has helped process him being gone.

A great interview with 3 of The World's Best Musicians. If you see the one common thread that exists between them, it's not the drums; it's the self analysis, self criticism and desire to raise the bar of their craft every time they pick up their sticks. Well done.

It pains me for the loss of Neil. I've been a drummer for now 40 years this year. Though my influences have been Ringo and Rick Allen, Neil remains the most challenging and in a lot of ways, inspiring. RIP Neil. His loss truly hurts deep.

  • @canadude6401

I am not a drummer, even though my steering wheel disagrees with me.
For me, Rush was always my favourite band since I first heard them in 1980 and I don't have to tell you how excellent Neil was behind the kit. However, he was so much more than an fantastic drummer! What I personally related to was the lyrics in the songs. I really felt they spoke to me, and my own philosophical nature.
After a horrible personal event happened in my life in 2009, and I was struggling to keep my stuff together. I happened upon Neil's book "Ghost Rider", and I credit it to "saving my life".
After hearing about his tragedies with Selena and then Jackie, it really gave me perspective about coping with grief. He handled the grief so well, and pressed on with the band, and even moved on with a new wife and had another daughter! If that isn't an example of perseverance, I don't know what is! Neil was an amazing drummer, but also outstanding human being.
It's been 5 days since I heard he passed and I am still grieving about it and processing the information. I never met him, but the words in his songs and especially his books were something very special. For me, he was the white haired Uncle at the fireside sharing his words of wisdom.
He earned his nickname The Professor for many reasons.

Neil admired Keith Moon and modeled his style after him. You need very powerful band to carry the drumming of Moon and Peart. The Who could easily match Moon but Rush not so much for Peart.

Like many, I came here for NP, and have been binge-watching everything on YT featuring him. But, what a pleasant surprise in discovering Doane, and I'd not heard Terry in a forum verbally expressing himself to this degree,at least without a predetermined goal of demonstration or teaching.. The jam was fun, but the intellectual exchange between these three was priceless. I am a guitar player, but could listen to these guys for days. Especially pleased to hear Neil in this venue, he was truly relaxed and in his element, involved in exchanging ideas with his peers. It's been the best of the NP I've been absorbing for the last week. Thank you Drum Channel, subscribing.

Neil Peart carried us all; I know he carried me, certainly. RUSH is major, in my life. When a person is an athlete, and the sport he is active in relies on syncopation and repetition via ever flowing rolling and in rumble, then you know indeed, that you are in recognition. I completed more thousands of miles than I could count, with Neil Peart and RUSH in my blood, making heartbeats. "Marathon" helped me cover more miles, "Subdivisions" validated my view through my ears-mind. RIP Neil. You are my brother, merely 12 days older than I am now, and you left far too soon. My turn. I m only sublimely happy that we lived in this time. Thank you for the success.

I though I might be the only person feeling like "a part of their has been removed" due to their sense of loss. I hope that we can all find some solace, but I really doubt it. Many people in my age group have known Rush since they were in 7th Grade. Many of us at this age are "searching for someone to guide us", to show us the way to be better people.
Rush filled a big void (actually they overfilled) for us. So when someone comes along and breaks the container (holding all of that comfort), we struggle to NOT lose all of it!

  • @godbluffvdgg

:)...So glad I spent nearly a half century with Neil AND Bozzio...:)...To we life long fans that know every nuance of Rush, Neil will NEVER DIE....
    Look the mist is rising
And the sun is peaking through
    See, the steps grow lighter
As I reach their final few
    Hear, the dancing waters
    I must be drawing near
    Feel, my heart is pounding
    With embattled hope and fear
Now, at last I fall before
    The Fountain of Lamneth
I thought I would be singing
But I'm tired... out of breath
    Many journeys end here
But, the secret's told the same
    Life is just a candle
And a dream must give it flame
The key, the end, the answer
    Stripped of their disguise
    Still it's all confusion
And tears spring to my eyes
    Though I've reached a signpost
    It's really not the end
Like Old Sol behind the mountain
    I'll be coming up again...
    I'm in motion
    I am still
    I am crying
    I am still
    I'm together
    I'm apart
    I'm forever
    At the start
    Still... I am
Lyrics; Fountain of Lamneth, Neil Peart 1/07/2020

I just watched this in it's entirety. Thank you DC so very much for posting this. I'm sure everyone there has a heavy heart as I do at the end of this seeing Neil Peart stading with Doane and Terry knowing his drums are silenced. But you brought them to life with this video, along with his (many) words of wisdom and insight to drumming and life.
It was great to laugh at the stories everyone told and I am so inspired by all that was said by these obviously amazing minds and bodies of talent.

Watching Neil tease Bozzio at 19:19 choked me up a bit... He seemed so in his element with those guys; like when Alex and Geddy and He were having dinner... He was such an inspiration to so many of us drummers...Practiced to Neil since 76...Bozzio just stays young...His work in U.K is his best IMO... His Zappa stuff is naturally brilliant but that was a big band with a tyrant leader...U.K gave him 33% ... I likewise acknowledge Neil and his musical legacy, Bozzio in his for sure, but an overshadowed drummer in this video is Doane Perry. I saw Tull around 02 in Ft Worth
and it was a nice theater... They did some unexpected tunes and Doane killed those hard to articulate Barriemore Barlowe parts, (who's a hidden giant of the prog rock drum world) ala Tull. He was
very good and his kit sounded nice and full. They did Hunting Girl, which seems easy, til you try to execute it in context!
I have seen these 3 men live and Neil 3 times. Always a wonder and a feat to hear those songs played with some reserve at shows, and others like the Vapor Trails show, which was quite slow burn and raw. Terry has the skills to play anything, but Ive not been as impressed with long solo drums to just listen to a lot.

Great segment no doubt....seems this thing for me has settled in bit by bit. Since late 70's and just resonating with 2112 at 8yrs old, till I picked up drums at the age of 12. It was on; a stream of non-stop Neil always present. This really propelled my own drum craft as it did for so many. For everyone, it's our own personal journey, and now sitting at 50 I realize just how powerful it is when you have meaning in others lives to the point that no one shares the exact same thing but all equally as powerful. For me, I'm blessed to have been here for Neil's time and thankful that his drum craft connected and inspired purpose in my young impressionable life.
