Losing Tom Petty was a punch in the gut...Losing Neil Peart has me literally in mourning. Widely misunderstood - but a well-read, super-intelligent, down to earth kind soul who was so committed to his craft that he became one of the best drummers in the world. It's completely insane to me. I've never even bought an Rush album, and yet knowing that Neil has passed has really messed with my head. I don't know why. I'm crying as I type this. RIP Neill. Greatest drummer ever!
Neil Peart isn't dead, just his body. His track and spirit on this rock of many orbiting our star named Sun is permanent with stains so illusive and demanding solitude so happy that us alive during his tenure we are blessed to know, maybe see him in visualation, breathe his immediate air and of course feel the beat and strum from some of his most inspiring strikes on a drum set and teachings. What a beautiful person he was..but most important..still IS.
The weight of knowing you built Neils last drums set... and now he's gone... Those drums... the last witness, and the final musical words spoken by him. Maybe the most priceless drums on the planet.

@@MAXIMUSMINIMALIST Surely not.. but it's a nice sentiment. The difference is that this set was documented during its construction. It is 100% the actual last concert kit played by NP. That can't be said of the other two guys. I'm willing to bet those two had something different every show.. without a doubt for KM, as he trashed everything he played. Keith and John are both on the mount rushmore of drummers, But no one before or sense, has inspired so many to become drummers like NP. He has his own Temple... and his set is worth way, way more.

I used to play drums many years ago but I was never what you could call exceptional. My son wanted to play and became proficient at about age 14 after two years of playing. His favourite drummer was good but not what I would call world class. When his name came up when discussing making music I always told him that his hero was a hack. He'd get angry about it but my purpose was for him to open his eyes and ears to some of the truly great drummers in the world.
As it so happened I heard RUSH was coming to my city on their Presto Tour. Being a single parent of three I begged borrowed and stole enough money out of the cookie jar to buy four tickets. I told my kids we were going to a RUSH concert and my drummer son did not want to go. He wanted to go see Guns and Roses the following night but I told him no, we are going to see RUSH. The opening band was nothing to write home about but his attitude changed a little and he began to enjoy himself. When RUSH came on stage he watched Neil Peart and by the second song he was hooked. He was blown out of his seat when Neil did his solo with two kits on a turntable, one acoustic and mike, the other electronic. He did a down roll off the snare onto timbales, tubes, and toms. When he got to the last floor tom the turntable started to swing around and he went straight on to the electronic snare without missing a beat. When he finished with the electronics he did an up roll from floor tom all the way back up to the snare and the turntable turned and he went on to the acoustics without missing a single beat. My kids were all glued to the balcony railing when the show ended but I told them to stand up and clap for all they were worth. They didn't know why but they did it. Soon Neil, Alex, and Geddy came back out for the standing ovation and played another song. They got I believe 3 or 4 ovations before they finally called it a night. When we were leaving the venue my two sons started to run a head to get to the car by I yelled at my oldest, the drummer, what he thought of his drumming hero now. He slammed on the brakes and spun around, looked me right in the eye and said, "He's a hack Dad." Mission accomplished. Neil Peart opened my sons eyes and ears to what music could be and even to this day my son still listens and plays Neil's licks whenever he can.
My son and I were both crushed when we heard about Neil's passing. We both thought he got a really shitty deal. For me it was like my world became a smaller diminished place without him being around. It made me realize that I wasn't getting any younger but on the flip side I am one of the few people in the world that actually had the privilege to see them play live three times so it all sort of balances out. He was and is one of the truly great ones and he is missed by many. His music will never get old...........

1500 hundred years ago there were forests so dark you needed a torch to see. Neil was a quiet, humble, lighthouse. Giving light to you and me.
When you think.of it from the perspective, it is such a very long time ago in the evolution of society and technology. Those trees sat there for hundreds of years just patiently waiting for someone to come along and find them. Absolutely amazing
Besides being an amazing musician and composer what I liked about Neil was that he had CLASS. He stayed humble. He didn't beg people to vote for him on polls, he didn't have social media pages with 500 pictures of himself all over it, he didn't name drop.... he just created and played music that made a LOT of people happy. The world is a sadder place without him. RIP, Professor.

I think of it a bit differently. There won't be another _him_ because only he was him, as individual as anyone can be. Thanks to him, however, there are potentially more _like_ him because of his great influence which he has left to the world as part of his legacy. He has inspired many, and I have no doubts at all that he will continue to do so for a long time (provided we do ourselves the favor of not destroying ourselves outright).
Neil has passed away, but Mike Portnoy is still breathing and he is the only drummer out there that could even remotely challenge Neil
TorbjørnMain - Mike is great, but that statement is simply not true. There are many, many great drummers out there who blow minds every day with seemingly superhuman chops.
There will be someone as inspirational and as gifted as him. It may not happen soon and it may be many generations before it happens. The world is still waiting for the next Niccolo Paganini. It's been 180 years and people are still struggling to truly play his work. Today we have masters such as Itzhak Perlman but with all due credit to Itzhak he plays Niccolo's work but doesn't create like he does. Watching Itzhak play was one of the defining moments of my musical life and I only played violin for a couple of years as a kid a elementary school. The following 40 years have all been about rock guitar, from Yngwie to Hetfield.

The first concert I had the privilege to see was the Moving Pictures tour and at a time in my life when home life was not good, being in high school and having little joy in my life. Enter Rush, they were my "escape" and my joy. I remember tears in my eyes when that concert started and for a rare time in my life I was alive! I had the good fortune to have a neighbor who loaned me the "All the Worlds a Stage" LP and that got my journey started. I listened with headphones and opened the album cover to find three guys...this can't be. Three people can not create this much sound! I have been a huge fan for 45 years or so. Standing in line to get the LP, cassette or whatever format the release came in and getting home as quickly as possible to listen!
I am so thankful for the decades of outstanding music and concerts I was able to enjoy. Thank you Neil, Geddy and Alex you have, without knowing, touched people and blessed us all!!
I still mourn the loss of our dear Mr. Peart.

To Neil's interviewer: I’ve seen so many interviews of Neil that if there's one thing I can tell... he was impressed with your line of questioning. He loved and was eager to answer your questions, which is something that seemed difficult to pull off for many others. Great job!

You guys all commented so correctly about Neil. He simply loved what he did and always gave everything he had which was so,so very much. To him it wasn’t about being famous and flashy. He didn’t want to be idolized only recognized in the Hall of Fame. Which should have been done way before it actually came to pass. I have known people like Neil. People who have it all and keep it to themselves. They don’t flaunt it or try to be better than the people around them. People that are humble and kind. The ones I am close to are loaded with money yet will give you the shirt off their backs. As a builder of large scale homes I am fortunate to experience these types of people while I build for them. I would have loved to build Neil a home. He would have got the best price!!! What a fantasy that would be. I could learn so much more from such a kind person. After all I’m a drummer because of him.
Neil was so big minded and intelligent. The best guy and drummer in the universe. I love and miss the guy so dearly. Rest In Peace Mr. Peart The Professor...

What a beautiful documentary. To see production come to fruition and see my Hero playing on these works of art really struck a nerve. Sitting by myself watching this masterpiece has me with wet eyes. When Neil lost his wife and daughter, he headed out on his bmw bike and traveled north america to sooth his aching heart. I had the brief pleasure to share a cigarette with him sitting on a guard rail one summer morning in Çape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. I was on my bike and pulled off highway to admire beautiful scenery of the bras' dor lakes. He did as well and we had a smoke and chatted about the beauty of nature and all things good and pure. As l got ready to roll once again, l introduced myself and he said l'm Neil. I replied l know. He smiled and was happy l didn't bother him with a thousand questions l think. Very special day for me. Still feel gut punched. RIP NEIL PEART.

Yes The Professor was a poet and percussionist rock drummer going to the next level. He took it to the next level - all the time. If everyone in life can find what he / she excels at there'd be more successful people like Neil Peart. I've learned after working 3 and a half decades that you want to do what you have a passion for. I was a decent rock bassist, I had passion for it but ignored it simply to try to learn a skill-set to make a living and support my family. Now that many things are said and done I will go back to what I had a passion for in the first place; playing bass guitar. I will think about every member in Neil's band because their music is inspiring simply at the top level.

Neil left a legacy of great drumming when he retired from Rush. Many young drummers that he inspired could emulate his playing, but will never fill the shoes left behind by the Professor. No one can write the lyrics as he did! The world lost an eloquent speaker and writer and of course percussionist. There is unrest in the forest, there is trouble with the trees, for the maples want more sunlight and the 1500 year old oaks became Neils kit. R.I.P.

i bought a Tama artstar kit on the back of Neils earlier drum sounds..much louder with far more cut than Dw stuff, and then any ludwig maple kit sounds beautiful..Ludwig have a certain musicality that only becomes evident when played with other instruments..that's just my experience

When they started interviewing "The Professor" tears were streaming from my eyes as it hit home to me that he is really gone! I am a lifelong Rush fan and at that moment their whole career flashed in my mind and I went on later to put my headphones on and listened to Hemispheres in its entirety after I watched this amazing doc..... I can't thank you enough!!!

Neil is the epitome of the musician every musician aspires to be in their soul. Regardless of which instrument they play. It's his ethos, his demeanour, his integrity, his musicianship and the richness of his soul. Even God shed a tear when Neil passed.

I loved the way Neil Peart described this 1500 year old Oak. Saying that it's quality was "supernatural" gave me chills. That was soooo cool.
Great drunmers presented here, but for me; Neil Peart has been at the centre of my discipline for playing. Now that Neilnhas passed its now up to us to see who transcends and lays the ground work for the upcoming generations and the 50 years of inspiration.
Neil was a Master in every sense of the word.

You don’t know how lucky you are to interview the musicians and tour the factory where the greatest set of drums ever were made by the greatest musician who ever lived played on his final tour with the greatest band to ever be. Thank you so much for bringing this beautifully created video of some of the most beautiful people in the world today.
I became a drummer because of watching Neil.
From a musically inclined family that pushed me to play the lower brass instruments like trombone and baritone or the tuba. I always drifted back to the drums. So even though I played the brass instruments that taught me to read and write music in bass clef format, I ended up sticking with the drums. They are the heartbeat of all music in my opinion.

The first song I ever tried to play on the drums was Tom Sawyer. I failed, of course, but I still felt something deep inside that was calling to me. Neil Peart knew how to write with the drums, to make the drum parts fill the emptyness that was left by the rest of the music. To me, that is what makes him one of the greatest musicians of our time. Just put on some RUSH, close your eyes and let yourself be taken on a magical journey
Couldn't help but get chocked up listening to Neil. Miss him dearly. R.I.P professor.

Absolutely great! I love DW drums and gear, but now have a whole new appreciation for DW and the heart & soul they put into their product. And of course the backstory for Neil Peart's R40 kit is fantastic. Bravo! Loved it.

Watching this I feel such a loss at Neil's passing. The world seems somehow less without him. Aside from that, what wonderful passion the whole team of DW has.

I used to listen to Neils radio interview when Rush would be in town for a show. This was way back in the analog days when the radio was all i had and Neil would passionately describe the new album before that night's show. Seeing Neil here was the last time I would see and hear him tell his thoughtful and deep insight about the kit. What a moment what a life. I miss Neil. I learned more about life from Neil Peart than I did from anyone other than my Creator.

THIS has to be one of the most incredible videos I have ever seen over the past 40 years! Wow.
John Good and Neil Peart shaped my view of the world. I never met Neil, but lived my life to a level of expectation from myself that he set.
I met John in Margate, Florida at Sam Ash. He was just...hanging around from what I could see. John talked to me and four other guys who were just...hanging around as well and I got MASTER CLASS in salesmanship. John LOVED what he did and it poured out of him. He was describing his new shallow shell FAST toms, told a story about a very expensive Terry Bozzio drumset, and afterwards all I wanted to do was enjoy my work as much as he loved his.
He's the Neil Peart of salesmen. "Of salesmen!"
John Good. Genius. Passionate. True innovator. I am completely blown away by his artistry.

I was lucky to be at the Forum for the last RUSH show. The second half of the set was when it really hit me that RUSH was ending. The band had not said it was the last, but everyone knew it in thier heart. I was in joyous tears for the last 30 minutes.

I came to truly appreciate Rush later in life when I learned that Neil Peart was an avid motorcycle rider, and had written books about his travels. When I read those books I realized this man was a soul, a being, like no other. To say he was robbed of a long life is an understatement. I feel so sad for his daughter, his wife, his family and friends, but to read his books and hear his lyrics what a full and lived life he had. He said he'd never been bored, and I think he lived his life like he pursued playing drums, relentlessly.

I could listen to Neil talk for hours. His passion about the topic at hand is infectious. He could make reading the directions on any product seem interesting. Having a glass of The Macallan in your honor while watching this. RIP Professor

Well maybe, Or maybe it's just because he was the best drummer that ever lived. I love his lyrics, but when I first heard him drum and thought "holy shit that's awesome", I didn't know that he was also the primary lyricist. Anyway, this is a really really good documentary!!!!

Speechless listening to Neil
I dunno…..I just started reading some of these comments..... I'm guessing as a way to commiserate with my fellow Neil/RUSH fans in my own personal grieving way. I gotta say from the heart, that every post I've read here just now has moved me, with most eliciting an emotional response stronger than I care to admit..... from this former tough old US Marine. Probably an easy task to do now that I am/we are moving thru the seven stages of grief & loss together. - Yet my eyes are drawn towards the mountain in the east, fascinates and captivates, gives my heart no peace.
As one veteran (USAF) to another, Mitch, I share your grief in coming to grips with Neil's passing. I feel drawn to discover more about Neil each day since his death, never truly appreciated how masterful he was as a master drummer or lyricist until last month. Seeing this video gives me hope that Duncan Phillips of the Newsboys may have been able to speak to Neil during his long (3 year?) battle and helped him become a believer in Jesus Christ and salvation. It takes the pain away for me. I pray it does for you.
The mountain holds the sunrise in the prison of the night till bursting forth from rocky chains the valley floods with light.
Let us not forget the stories he told and the wisdom and philosophy he imparted with the lyrics he wrote.

Wow.... I loved that documentary so much. And I loved to know the complete history of Neil's drum . I am amateur Luthier and I was just on the edge of building a guitar and to order one kind of body and one kind of neck . Now this made me want to build one starting by the roots of it . When I seen this video come up on my watch list I wasn't sure what it was going to be about and I was a bit apprehensive to watch it. Well, wow! Am I glad I clicked to watch it. As a fan of Rush since 1980 I finally saw in New Orleans on the last tour. $650.00 per seat and it is worth a lifetime experience sorry I didnt see the bands I wanted to see all these years... now. RIP NP. To listen and watch him speak makes my heart ache for the loss of a beautiful human being.

Very much overlooked in the critics eyes. Apparently not in the same conversation as say a David Bowie, the Beatles, the rolling Stones or led Zeppelin. But in my opinion rush is tops in my book.
I'm glad i seen them four times during the 2000's before they ended.

Seeing Duncan Phillips of the Newsboys in this documentary gives me hope that he could help Neil in his final days.
Lucky to be part of this historic company by playing & I might add, paying for DW drums. I've visited Vic's ship in Chicago and was impressed with his knowledge and salesmanship,. The sound of the drums in his shop are tuned to perfection. Driving the bus is what we as drummers do. Sure, we all hear the drummer jokes but behind every great band is the soul known as the drummer. Keeping it together, moving the band forward in more ways than counting to four. I've been honored to be a part of the world of drummers that share freely. We've all witnessed the sharing of ideas amongst drummers. Sure our egos are part of what we do, yet we share in teaching each other our craft. We do them as drum clinics, sitting with a young beginner and teaching them how to hold a stick, then we learn from a thirteen year old phenom and marvel at how at that age they realize that there is no boundary and the precision and grace is limitless. Great documentary on a company that has craftspersons at every level. DW, thank you for allowing me to sound the way I do.

I did not know Neil personally but I did get to know the man through his writings. I read all his books, liking his incognito rides on his motorcycle in between his performances. I got to know his passion for people and his respect for those through his assocation and the care he had an old great drummer named Ferddy Gruber. I had an association with Mr. Gruber through another industry and because of that association I got to know the humble man Neil Peart in the third person. Neil cared for Freddy like his was a father figure that could give him drumming wisdom and and technique. Neil stayed close with him, taking care of Freddy until Freddie's passing. He truly had a love for him giving Freddy his place at the memorial Neil provided for an old almost forgotten great drummer. Because of that association I felt that I got to know the man Neil Peart. To hear of Neil's passing really stung my heart because of the great respect I had for him. I will miss you Neil. Thanks for letting me share some of life with you. Sincerely.
I’ve watch a lot of interviews with Neil Peart and I never heard him say ummm and ahhhs in conversation…..not once. He’s such en eloquent speaker an intellectual man, hence The Professor title. RIP, Neil.
As a lifelong drummer, thank you sincerely for this documentary.
This was a really fascinating insight into why the way drums are made is so critical to how we all sound, and I genuinely had no idea that so much went into it.
And seeing Neil Peart again, my absolute drumming hero - that was just gravy.
I saw Rush on the R40 Tour when they came to Portland, Oregon and to think I watched him play this kit and what went into it, is staggering.

I'm still not over Pratt passing. Its 2 years & I'm still grief stricken & raging pissed. Cuz I'll never hear any new rush music anymore, 29 shows is where it ended so noore concerts. At least I can take comfort in the fact that I was 14 in 74 when I discovered rush Pratt followed in 75. I was born in the perfect era 1960. When EVERYTHING was in it's golden age music, sports, movies, fashion. The whole enchilada. I saw rush in they're prime 40 yearsan my #1 band the holy Trinity. RIP Pratt. We lost a lit5 piece of ourselves when you left.
