I feel privileged to be able to revisit these Band-Maid songs in the company of someone who has the gift of being able to make me feel like I'm rediscovering them for the first time again. This is from the Brand New Maid album (which also features Freedom and Alone), and you can sort of sense them straining at the leash, ready to explode into the world with their own songs.

You could probably say this about 70% of the Band Maid catalog, but this is an underappreciated gem. I wish they would play it more in their live shows, but of course, they have so many great songs, it's tough to get them all in. An embarrassment of riches it is. It was a very cold and windy day when they filmed this and there are photos (and maybe video?) where the members are bundled up in parkas. The things they do for us! Great reaction as always NittPicc. You always make them so much fun. And while I've heard this song for years now, it still holds up. It is a straight up solid banger!

Added value! I've always loved this song but listening with you has increased my appreciation of everything BandMaid is doing here. Your expression after Kanami's solo was priceless. I felt like I was in the room with you. You see this is how us old people used to listen to music. One person would buy the record and we would listen to it together. The music was the point of the gathering and it increased the enjoyment by experiencing it in a community of appreciation. So your facial expressions, your articulation of what you hear and your knowledge of music make you a superior resctor. Your exuberant love of their music make it a highlight of the week for me to listen anew to these BandMaid favorites.
The Gap has never been more evidemt as when Kanami, in the frumpiest iteration of her English parlor maid get up, plays a supremely wicked solo! Love the blush high up on Saiki's cheekbones gets me. Miku's extra curly "dog's ears" are so cute. The harmonies knock me out! The greatest rhythm section currently active in music tear thru this tune like a runaway freight train. Kanami's genius shines through. Her compositional chops rival musicians who write for symphony orchestras. Thanks Princess NittPicc 👸!

Ok speaking to old school feel(long post incoming):
This song along with Real Existence, Puzzle, and Moratorium have always been my favorite style of Band-Maid and for a long time if you asked me my favorite Band-Maid song I'd say this one, and I couldn't explain why I loved it so much. So I was vinyl shopping and came across an album from a band I loved back in the day called Leatherface. They were a punk band from England from the late 80s to the mid 2000s. They released an album in 2000 called Horsebox the epitomized their style, Melodic Hardcore. Along with bands like Hot Water Music and the like they played a loud wall of sound hardcore music paired with melodic guitar riffs and pop leaning vocals. I was listening to these bands back to back and it finally clicked, Band-Maid in these songs are playing melodic hardcore music. Of course they add their own complexities and intricacies to make it their own but it is that unrelenting loudness and crunch with these beautiful melodies over them and the slight pop edge. So it might be ringing a bell of bands like It Prevails, Bad Religion, and Rise Against that you've heard in the past. I think that's why a lot of us love not only Band-Maid but a lot of the other Japanese bands, because they remind us of the bands and music we loved from the past but take it to the next level and create the ideal of what that sound could be.

Welcome Home Princess NittPicc, po! I hope you are having a wonderful Band Maid Sunday. You can date the song somewhat by their battle armor, but also some of the gear they were using too. Akane was still wearing the infamous tiny hat. Miku had switched to a Zemaitis guitar, while Kanami was still using one of her Addictone guitars (no bird inlays on the fret board and all of the tuning pegs on one side). At that point Misa was still using a 4-string bass, instead of her now usual 5-string bass. They had to shoot the video in the middle of winter, since that is probably the only time you will see an empty beach, so our favorite Maids were freezing during that video shoot, especially in that battle armor. They welcomed the torches they brought out for the nighttime portion of the shoot, but some of them also got minor burns from the torches. You could probably tell that the wind was really whipping the flames around. Please take very good care of yourself and I hope you have an amazing week.

IDK, but I think the MAIDs are about 23~25yo here. You can tell it’s an early video because of SAIKI’s interesting eye makeup, and Tiny Hat.
Doesn’t “solo” mean only one instrument, playing alone? I think the appropriate world is “lead,” the the guitar stands out among all the other instruments playing at the same time.
THE NON-FICTION DAYS is still one of my favorite songs. It’s rocks hard and is filled with shifts and surprises that still delight and thrill. Listening also makes me appreciate how SAIKI’s voice has changed to become richer and even more expressive since then.
There are not so many videos of their older songs. I think you’ve already seen THRILL, DON’T YOU TELL ME, and BEFORE YESTERDAY. How about SECRET MY LIPS?

    • @NittPicc
      @NittPicc  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I this context, using the word "lead" would be more proper. In classical a classical setting we always call it a "solo" when an instrumentalist has a chance to shine while the rest of the groups perform. I default to my classically trained brain! So yeah! Both are right. I am learning more about the right languaging to use.
I think I did Secret My Lips? Or maybe I just did Secret Maiko Lips...Hmmm...

According to an interview in January 2019. Saiki's polyp surgery was in July 2017... Followed in August by Miku's less serious throat surgery in August, for vocal nodules. The timing was meant to not cut too deeply into rehearsal time. The dates for surgery seem to conflict within the same article, but Saiki clearly says that by the Summer of 2017 she had had enough.

Yes, this was before Saiki's vocal cord nodule surgery. This was also from the period before they were allowed to write their own songs by their agency. Alone is the first song recorded that was written by Kanami.

The MV is great, live is fire. After you do one of those, see if someone in the community will send you the acoustic (I wish I had it). Guaranteed amazement.

Great reaction as usual! I love this song. It does have an nostalgic feel because it has a 70s rock sound to it. No need to worry about saying something is old school because there's nothing wrong with old school. Not written by them but you can tell that Kanami picked up some ideas from the composer of this one. I think it's worth noting some of the syncopated lines in the vocals. Not easy to sing accurately when your accenting the updates like that. Of course Saiki makes it look easy because she's so good rhythmically.

It's definitely baby Band-Maid! When you're used to seeing them in their recent videos and then you go back to something like this you can see how much younger they were.
Arguably Band-Maid's best work came after they started writing their own music, but before that they had a say in song choice, style, arrangement, etc. and some of their older songs are bangers - and this is one of those. This is the Band-Maid paradox: they keep getting better, but when you go back to their early work you realize they've always had it.
If you can find it, it's worth watching the 2017 Studio Coast performance of this. They closed the show with it, and even though it's the same song played at the same speed, there's an intensity to it that feels like they're trying to demolish the venue for their finale.
Freezer is another one from their early days that's worth seeking out (and there's no video, so it's a deep cut even if it's a classic fan favorite). You might also want to hear something from their first album, before they took their hard rock turn with Thrill; some say it's their weakest work, which is fair, but it's solid pop rock/power pop/pop punk kinda stuff that's full of youthful energy. I like to say they went to the beach for a weekend and spent an afternoon knocking out an album for fun, although that's not literally true (I'm sure they worked hard on it). Key and Forward are probably the best bets, but Bye My Tears and Knockin' on Your Heart are both fun, or try their very first song, Be OK.

I don’t know the exact months, but I think at the time of this video, it was still about a year or maybe a little more before Saiki finally decided to have her throat worked on. Brave, strong woman!💪🏻🤘🏻

I wonder if the composers they were working with knew that Kanami was analyzing and studying their works to become a serious composer herself. A couple old songs to check out: Beauty and the Beast (a rare song where Miku sings lead and Saiki sings backup), Freezer (Saiki and Miku trading vocals)

Band Maid seems to consistently shoot their videos in either burning heat (Influencer) or freezing cold (this one, Warning) and those are just some examples. Everything I've read however, says that they are always dedicated troopers in getting them shot. And the wee hat! I get why it was retired, but I miss that little fascinator. Thank you for doing an older song of theirs. While they truly came into their own when they did their own music, they have some great songs from their early albums!

Good morning. Regarding you're nostalgia comment... I first got into Band-Maid in 2019. At that time there were a few bands around who were trying to bring back that old school rock sound. I appreciate what those bands were trying to do. But I'd always thought they sounding too much like what had already been done. But when I first heard Band-Maid my reaction was probably like others in thinking "Really? Where the hell did these guys come from?" This song was probably the forth or fifth song down the my listening rabbit hole. But through it all, I think they also gave me a nostalgic feels. But, with an updated sound, and they weren't trying to sound like anyone else. They were original sounding, while still making me think "I missed hearing this so much".
This is just my observation, but I hear this band as having gone through four phases. Phase 1 was them under the tutelage of their label with their first two albums. Phase 2 was Band-Maid expressing (or announcing) who they were through their heavier rock sound, their next two albums. Phase 3 was them exploring new sounds, the next two albums. Finally, phase 4 is progressive/experimental Band-Maid in their most recent studio releases. They put so much into their compositions and performances. They have such a deep catalog it's difficult to choose a exemplar of early Band-Maid. Try "Puzzle", one among many genius pieces.

Band-Maid Sundays with Princesses NittPicc are always so good and fun. Great song and love reliving my first time listening to this song with you. Love the bridge section on this song. Shot at Sudahama Beach (須田浜海岸), Suda, Kamisu, Ibaraki Prefecture. This is one of the 3, "It's cold AF and fire is welcome" MV's, with "Warning" and "Shambles" being the other two. It was really cold for all of these videos and the Maid welcomed the fire scenes because it warmed them up. Well, now I have to wait a week for the next Band-Maid reaction from you. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘

The Non-Fiction Days use to be their go-to closer. When the song ended, the Maids would give Miku her few seconds to say goodbye, bow, and then all quickly walk off stage. The crowd felt like they'd been run over by a speeding freight train of awesomeness. It all felt so good and the fans wanted more! But they were leaving... until next time! Thx, Ms Picc! ;-)
