  • In this video I'll show you how to test what your klipper controlled 3d printer can do and show you how to set a limit for your acceleration to avoid print defects at higher speeds.
    *Since recent firmware change, it is necessary to issue a 'restart' command after changing any settings or following any calibration procedures.*

    @Ricky Impey - Please look into your commands you have listed
    TUNING_TOWER COMMAND=SET_VELOCITY_LIMIT PARAMETER=ACCEL START=1500 STEP_DELTA=500 STEP_HEIGHT=5 does not work in the newest version of the Sonic Pad Firmware
    This command appears to work:
    TUNING_TOWER COMMAND=SET_VELOCITY_LIMIT PARAMETER=ACCEL START=1250 FACTOR=100 BAND=5
    EDIT:
    Also, if you have done the input shaping/resonance shaping, please make sure to perform this step too:
    SET_INPUT_SHAPER SHAPER_FREQ_X=0 SHAPER_FREQ_Y=0
    This will disable the current resonance settings in the printer config
    I hope this helps anyone that comes across this post

    Ricky, I have been an instructor for 34 years and let me tell say that your way of explaining technical things is straigh, to the point and very clear. Whenever some other TH-camrs explain things, I can tell they love to hear themselves talk because they go in circles and use fancy languaje. THANK YOU for these fantastic informative videos. When I bought the Sonic Pad, I assumed it'd be plug and play, or at least the tuning would be covered in the User Manual.
    Turned out neither was true. So many YTers keep giving rave reviews to the sonic pad, but ALL of them literally skip all of this setup process.

    This was great but just make sure you restart or reset your printer after running the test. I had 11k acceleration set as the max and ended up layer skipping because my printer didn’t default back. Not a big deal just Klipper should probably reset by default when you end the test.

I just tried to print this calibration tower, when the print ''started'' it skipped to 47% halfway done in the Gcode... It didn't even home the axis or anything and started printing in mid air haha. I added a top layer and now its printing. Amazing tutorials btw rick, you're the best !

    Hey Ricky , thanks for the tips setting up. I have a particular dislike for cura and it’s inability to work well with certain things - I’d like to use Bambu slicer but when used it things their is no extruder configuration - it works with cura fine but not with Bambu despite changing start/end gcode as per creality guide in the preset in Bambu - if I leave the stock gcode it does work but sort of half properly and I can’t really see a way to ignore slicer speeds in bambu like cura - the issue is I’ve rarely gotten any decent results when slicing with cura vs prusa or Bambu

Only thing that would be nice, when making a bunch of changes in the slicer settings, would be very helpful if you listed them below. I rewatched that section over a dozen times to be sure I got them all. Thanks for all you great work. Could you do a video explaining how the macros work, especially regarding time-lapse , get Time-lapse setup, hyper lapse, etc? Each time I press these macros, it messes with my camera and I’ve had to ultimately turn off time lapse for my camera.
    Furthermore, could you do an explanation on how to make a 1 macro for pausing a print, changing out filament, doing a command of G1 F200 E50, and resume print (essentially a M600 without having to slice it in with slicer) - Since Creality did an update and messed with the M600 command. Then explain how to put this IN the print cfg? I ask, because each time I try - I am doing something wrong and my SP throws an error.

      I was having the same predicament. Well, the first couple days I've been trying to do this, it wasn't working because some of my settings were messed up and on some prints I forgot to disable pressure advance. Now I'm having the same thing happen as you, where there's not really much gap in my prints, and I'm afraid to test much faster because it starts to sound a little violent on turns. I think I will try a higher speed setting, say 125-150, and try one more time.

Also maybe you can make a filament change video using the Sonic Pad? Thanks again for all the help.

    • @RickyImpey

      Thanks for your suggestions👍Creality have confused things by selling two separate laser modules that will work with the Ender 3 S1 Pro. They have a 1.6w and a 5w unit that can be controlled by the printer's control board but then also the complete separate add on 10w kit that I reviewed. The 10w kit is separate and, like you say, controlled by it's own control board. It's the lower powered units that the Sonic Pad can apparently control but I don't have one of those to try.

I have an Ender 3 S1 Pro and have done all of the videos in the basic and intermediate up until this point. It's only a month and 8 days since I've had it... I don't understand why yours is so much better than mine and can print at higher speeds etc. This is my first 3D printer and I've honestly had problems getting and keeping it level (hence the Sonic Pad) and am highly debating on switching to linear rails on all axis and a glass bed. I've had problems with a warped bed that I've had to persuade back into place which has helped immensely and I literally don't have to relevel every day, I've had to recheck all of my springs, add nuts to keep the bolts from spinning when leveling, recheck bearings and wheels, I've tried solid rubber spacers. It's marketed as a beginner friendly printer and I want to rip my hair out.😅 Thanks in advance NxP

    i have followed along up to this point, however i have awful banding/ringing all the way up the print on input shapping i only managed to get 4 layers up before i could see through the print. i have layers missing from the start of the layers ect.
    do you have any suggetions on what wrong?

    • @RickyImpey
      @RickyImpey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you followed all of the previous videos in the series? PID tune and Rotational Distance especially?
      If you have set both of these then make sure your slicer flow settings are at 100%. If the problem persists then have a look at your extruder and make sure you don't have any issues there that may cause an under extrusion.

      @nathanmitchellita ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RickyImpey I gave up Ricky I did follow all the videos in the series was really good.
      I think the flow rate like you suggest could have beem wrong as I switched slicer to default prusa profile and used that and came alot better but still bit of ringing.
      I have now ordered a bambu lab p1p hopefully I don't have to mess around to much 😊
      Cheers for the reply content is solid keep going.

    I went through all your videos and love them. My Sonic Pad is a machine and working great thanks to you. My only dissatisfaction with the S1 Pro is there is not alert tone when it moves for a filament change so text notifications would be very convenient. The descriptions on the forums are a little over my head and it doesnt seem to be done on YT. Your videos are so easy to follow would you consider creating a video on moonraker notifications through telegram or through other methods?

    7K acceleration speed on your ender 3 s1 pro? crazy, i must be doing something wrong. Although i was doing this test with PETG, i could only get 4-4K accel speeds (chose the lower for quality.) could you or someone advise me on what i may be doing wrong? ive literally followed this entire guide a few times. Belts are tight and so are the wheels (no slop in the head) or is this because of using PETG rather than PLA?

    These videos have been really helpful but I've struggled with the acceleration test. Unfortunately I can't see any changes which makes me think the codes I've entered are being ignored and not that my printer can go super fast!! It's an Ender 5 Plus with direct drive micro swiss NG Revo. Are you going to update them as there appear to be a lot of changes on the sonic pad with q codes popping up. Thank you again for great videos.

    Another great video, do you have any suggestions on how to get a good bottom print of an irregular object ? I find unless you have a flat surface object the bottom layer is always rough, is there anyway to get around this ?

    • @RickyImpey
      @RickyImpey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything that isn't flat on the bottom will very likely need supports. It is possible to tune support settings to improve the surface they leave after you remove them but a supported surface will never be as clean as a top surface unfortunately.

    Just got an Ender 3 S1 for Christmas and added a sonic pad. Everything is working fine, except I'm confused on this test. On the X side a hole opens up around 2200, on the Y side, there are no holes until around 6000, and those are just pin holes. the x side has more like slits. I'm not sure I understand what to make of that. Also, if I'm maxed out at 2200, is there anything I can upgrade to increase that?

    @RickyImpey The main indicator of the best acceleration are the gaps? Despite the gaps, which in my case also started at around 7500, the printing itself looks very neat, the corners are also very good despite this speed. My question is, can we get even faster print speeds by setting higher acceleration values without compromising quality?

Then i did another test from 500 with steps of 250, same thing, X is gapped, and Y starts at 2000 ish. I hope there was better speed on the cr-m4 lol

    Just a curiosity and for my clarity, when you're speaking of the 7500-15000 ranges you're referring to mm/s SQUARED, correct. You repeatedly said mm/s but if my printer runs at that speed it would fly the hotend off the gantry lol

    Hi Rickey, followed all your videos I am using an ender 5plus all set up and printing great. Thankyou. I have one question I changed the max velocity in the config file. Printing superbly at 7000. But every time I slice a file and send it to the printer via console it reverts back to 500. I then have to change it on the console back to 7000 hit enter and it speeds up. Is there a way to set that speed for every print or should it hold. I am using cura 5.1 as the slicer, speed in slicer set at 100mm sec.

    • @RickyImpey

I would assume that disabling the feature as you mentioned would then render the slicer "flow" preview un-useful? Could you elaborate on this or anything to do with volumetric flow/Klipper/sonic pad.
