    Another great addition to your reviews! Mentioning if the display port is connected to the GPU. My rule of thumb was that once the only displayport is through type c or thunderbolt it was, if a laptop offered both displayport Moni and thunderbolt, then it wasn't. At least now I'll know for sure

    this is great development. I'm glad you decided to get into VR, for laptops especially. I have reading around on VR compatibility on gaming laptops since last year. I own an Asus Scar III (i7 9750h, RTX 2070) and I am somewhat reluctant on getting a better headset like the Index (they mostly use DP). The USB-C DP 1.4 is shown to not be connected directly in Nvidia Control Panel but I tried connecting an HTC Vive using J5Create HDMI to USB-C adapter and VR games seems to run fine. I use it mostly to play DCS, sometimes beat saber and Arizona Sunshine. I am now curious to see if headsets with actual DP connectors work with my Scar III. there are also certain sources say that results may vary by brand of DP to USB C adapters.
    I look forward to your future videos!

    Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! So glad you're doing this. One thing I think you could monitor for VR:Dips in fps can be much more of a problem for VR than max fps. Might just run through a demanding section and see if it can hold above the refresh rate. Also for the same reason throttling could be a problem, but I think you cover that very well already.

    Yes! Finally a laptop reviewer that will include VR benchmarks.
    I've been on a quest to find the ideal setup, the display port part is difficult if your laptop doesn't have a mini display port. You can plug into the thunderbolt 3 but you also need a SPECIFIC adapter that can support high refresh rate as well as higher resolutions.

    Knowing the routing of the display port or HDMI port for older VR headset users is very helpful. I purchased the Zenbook Pro Duo after getting confirmation on a few forums that it would work based on the display port routing through TB3 on some MSI laptops, but sadly my Vive Cosmos didn't work with it. I ended up purchasing a dedicated gaming laptop that supported it to bridge the gap (MSI GE63VR-7RF.) A very expensive lesson, but if I had paid attention to your mentioning of it in your review of the MSI Alpha 15, then i may have been able save a bit. Great video, and I look forward to seeing this on future videos!
    Maybe also revisit some recent machines that can or can't support this with a video?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I did the best possible revisit I could in this video, these were the only machines I had on hand, very unlikely companies will want to ship me models I've already covered to retest for VR unfortunately, sorry but just the way it is. Hopefully if I can keep the headsets I will be able to test additional videos.

    • @theforrestwalker
      @theforrestwalker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JarrodsTech Ah, no worries. I didn't think about you having to return the machines post-review. It is still good to see the Alpha 15's results, as I was considering that as a VR laptop back when I purchased the GE63. Do you think the Bravo 15 would do any better with the same graphics card, but better CPUs?

    • @theb1114
      @theb1114 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I almost pulled the trigger on purchasing the new Zenbook Pro Duo UX582 last night as I really love everything about it (2 screens, touch, OLED, etc). However, what stopped me was reading some reddit posts about this issue with older models. Also, even though it has a RTX 3080 in it, the refresh rate is only 60hz. I imagine this would be the max for the VR headset too, correct? So trying to run 90fps at 60hz on a game like Halflife: Alyx would probably produce a lot of tearing and probably motion sickness. This is just a guess but I have heard no one talk about refresh rates on laptops and VR headsets. Any ideas or what to look for there?

    • @theforrestwalker
      @theforrestwalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theb1114 I run my Vive Cosmos at 90fps all the time, no issues. The primary display is at 60fps, but the VR headset runs off the dedicated GPU, and at an independent frame rate. I will caution that my older 581 only has the HDMI 2.0 port connected to the GPU, so it took some time to find a converter to Display Port to get my VR headset to run. But now that it does, it’s great. Running an i9-9980HK and RTX 2060 in my machine, so the newer 582 should run 90fps no issues!
      Hope this helps!

    VR has really started to experience some pretty significant explosion in adaption. It's worth considering to at least test 1-3 VR games every time you do a laptop review. I know it's not PCVR that has really exploded but mostly the Quest. I still think it's worth giving a quick mention. To future proof videos. Also just adding games tested (including VR)

Both of these headsets will/do have 2160x2160 (per eye) displays; that's way above 4K. The problem is, 6GB of VRAM won't cut it at that resolution. Even the quest 2, with the resolution of 1832x1920 (per eye) is really pushing it, as its nearly 4K. So my question is: is a 6GB VRAM laptop still viable for VR gaming with high end headsets in the present day?

    Hello Jarrod, I just received my Msi GF75 and its great, but is it normal that my i5 9300h and gtx1660ti only get me 100 average fps on Fortnite on lowest settings ? I saw in one of your benchmarks with the same specs you got 180 average on lowest settings... Do you think there's an issue with my pc, and is there anything I can do to get more fps? I do have single channel 8g of ram, but im going to order 8 extra to have a dual channel 16g, but will this be enough to get me much better results? What can I do?

    For aero 15 oled rtx 2070 (non super), would you suggest Vive cosmos or valve index? Also does VR work directly on need some tricks to disable Optimus? Need adaptors or something or does the aero 15 oled have all needed ports to run VR experience with both cosmos and index? Again what would you suggest? I have a third option: pimax 5k+ or 8K XR + index base stations 2.0 and controllers would be a better quality options for the eye and image quality and clarity in your opinion? Or would you stick to cosmos and index? Again, what should be better between cosmos and index for crisp crystal clear quality and no aliasing and good resolution and immersion? Got disappointed from many VR in the past as they give a no clear image and a poor resolution where is even difficult to read letters and too much aliasing... Would like to buy once for all the best solution for my case and never change and need your suggestion, cannot decide among which VR and how to let them work (also consider it will be used on main rig with 2080 ti 9900k and future 10900k 3080ti) so the best quality solution is need beside requirements (if the best quality is given from 8k XR , just suggest it, for 3xample )

      I have no experience with other VR headsets so I honestly cannot say, sorry. Does not work with optimus, as mentioned in this video, the port needs to connect directly to the Nvidia GPU. Haven't tested latest Aero 15, but likely connects to Nvidia GPU, you need to test that.

    Please add beat saber tests somehow as I really want to see how well I can VR beat saber on various laptops. I think people will also be able to judge performance better via a good combination of low end vr games such as beat saber and high end ones like Half Life Alyx. Also could you please do a standard laptop GPU vr testing? Like given the current laptops and the range of GPUs in them, do a 1650 max q vs 1650 vs 1060 vs 1660ti vs 2060 etc to see how well be scales and what is minimum GPU required for low end and high end games. Thank you and keep up the good work!

      Not really sure how it will be possible to test that or really any game accurately for the reasons covered in the video :( the benchmark tools seem to be the way to go in terms of reproducibility.

      @@JarrodsTech Maybe do a testing with one song of your choice and give a disclaimer to go with it, in the charts iitself that this is only indicative and may not match with your results. Also on the VR tests, please specify the resolution and refresh rate of the VR Headset you are using, if you aren't already doing that.

    Any idea why performance on my triton 500 with Rtx 2070 max q is stuttering badly in Alyx and saints & sinners? I’m using a rift s and have done a full factory restore of my laptop but nothing has improved. Normal games perform well it’s just vr that seems to be the problem, Gpu and cpu usage is pretty low when I check in game.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, that GPU should be plenty, my best guess is single channel memory? That is a common cause of stuttering. Dual channel (2x sticks) should remove it.
