    The other key consideration for laptops and litterally all VR headsets, is that the majority of laptops external ports actually only connect to the CPUs integrated graphics, not the graphics card itself, and thus are incapable of using VR. Don't make the mistake of assuming that a gaming laptop is automatically a VR-Ready laptop. Check compatibility first.

    THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.... The question of USB C Thunderbolt to DisplayPort working with the Rift S has been HAUNTING me since I ordered a Rift S and and a Cable Matters adapter last week and subscribed to your channel. I have a Razer Blade Pro 2017 with GTX1080 that apparently feeds the TB USB C Port, and I have searched EVERYWHERE on the web and NOBODY ANYWHERE had tested the Thunderbolt Port to confirm it works. I was pretty confident it would but was still worried. You have erased all fears. Thanks for all you do and keep the 'Through the Lenses" series coming too. Was very helpful in choosing a VR headset....You're the man!

      Sorry to put doubt in your mind again but I'm reading that many 1080 Max Q laptops with Thunderbolt 3 have the Display Port routed to the integrated graphics and HDMI routed to the GPU. In other words, the DP coming out the Thunderbolt port is coming from the Integrated graphics and the HDMI coming out of the Thunderbolt port is coming from the GPU. This is the internal laptop signal routing arrangement we wanted when our Rift and Vive CV1's were HDMI devices but now that Rift S and Index are Display Port, the requirements of owners of those two HMD's are reversed. You need to go into your Laptops Display settings and open the PhysX tab. If the Display port Icon is on the PhysX side you are good to go. If its on the other side of the window and its the HMDI icon thats on the PhysX side of the window then you are out of luck. If thats the case then as TW said, no existing Thunderbolt->HMDI->Display Port adapter will work and you have to hope that someone will bring out a 1440p@80hz capable HDMI->Display Port adapter at some point.

    • @EdTruthan
      @EdTruthan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

       ca1ib0s , thanks for the heads up but I believe I'm good to go. Others may not be though and should take note of what you've shared and check the PhysX tab of their Nvidia control panel as you suggested. My Razer Blade Pro 2017 GTX-1080 ( the 4k 2TB SSD i7-7820HK version) isn't a Max Q as it was built before the Max Q release and to my knowledge has no Intel GPU on board, just the GTX. The PhysX tab definitively shows the DisplayPort is in the PhysX/GTX-1080 box and Razer's Razer Blade Pro 2017 page (which is still available for purchase apparently) specifically mentions 40Gbps DisplayPort support from the USB-C Thunderbolt Port. The proof is in the pudding of course. Since I'll have the Rift S in my hands by tomorrow night I'll post my results here in case it would help others with an RBP-2017-4K model configured like mine. Thanks again for the reply.

      @@EdTruthan did it work? I've been worried that my razer laptop might not be able to work with the rift s because of the absence of the direct DP. I have the same razer laptop but with the full HD instead of the 4K. I've checked the nvidia control and it says my laptop display is connected or running off of the Intel graphics card. What confuses me is there is a selection for which processor I want it to run off of. I have that on auto. Ive heard that the graphic cards work together?? The whole thing is very contradictory and just over all a headache. Hopefully we can sort this out, I'm quite new to vr and am just waiting to get my hands on one.

    Need clarification with the Thunderbolt 3: did you verify your Thunderbolt 3 port is directly connected to your laptop's graphics card or is it connected to the integrated GPU? Because there are articles posted stating if it is the latter, the Rift S will not work via USB C adapter. My laptop is the Dell G7 7588, and after learning this and verifying that my Thunderbolt 3 is NOT connected to my GTX 1060, I cancelled my Rift S pre-order :( even after buying my official Dell USB C to DisplayPort adapter ...

    • @tomc1380
      @tomc1380 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, unfortunately the TB3 on all Dell and Alienware laptops is hardwired through the intel integrated GPU and cannot be used with the Rift-S. Fortunately my 1.5 year old AW 17r4 has both hdmi and a mini DisplayPort so I'm ok. In your case assuming you have at least a gtx1060 you should be fine with either the older Rift cv-1. There should be lots of good used ones available soon, lol!

    Thunderbolt 3 to Display Port, worked on my MSI GS75 Stealth laptop.
    Update : I have been having random issues with the display on the Rift S. So I hooked it into my desktop computer that has a 1060 in it and it runs WAY BETTER. This laptop has a 2060 6GB in it and I think the Type-C adapter I got was no good.
    So turns out, YES the adapter was bad. The bad news is for some stupid ass reason my Thunderbolt 3 is linked to my damn Intel GPU and not the DEDICATED nVidia, so it won't work properly...... just like me, just wait for the valve index and see how it preforms before buying an VR thats what im doing at the moment because the 120-144hz is a huge improvement for VR because the VR devices we currently have are capped at 80~90hz and also the pixles of valve index is much better as they say so just wait for it and see which the best one suits you and buy it, also if ur going for the 144hz index you have to have a better pc parts like the RTX 2080 etc, so it can handle the games with alot of fps and no lag.

    With the USB-C one on the laptop, is it connecting through the NVIDIA chip or the on-board Intel chip? The assumption people are making is that it will take the discrete NVIDIA GPU, but really by default it will use the Intel chip instead.
    Also, for the HDMI to DisplayPort, did you try using a signal repeater along with the adapter? It worked for the original Oculus Rift with my laptop.

    Well spent £30 getting a usb-c adaptor for the Displayport, but it would have been helpful if a note had been made regarding the compatibility functions of different usb-c ports. USB-C type ports with a usb symbol next to it don't support DisplayPort Alt Mode unlike those with a thunderbolt or D symbol next to them, and thus it didn't work. Thanks for that. Now if this is not the case (which from my extensive searches online have revealed they are), then I would really appreciate any help in getting past the usb not recognised notification displayed when connected.

    This is an HDMI 2.0 to DP 1.4. The reason he could not get his HDMI adapter to work is because that HDMI and DP ports have different bandwidths. HDMI 2.0 has 18 Gbs and DP1.4 is 32.4 Gbs, but the Rift S has a DP 1.2 which has a bandwidth of 17.28 Gbs.

    PSA: A lot of people here seem to think Thunderbolt 3 = USB C. They look the same but they don't work the same. If your laptop doesn't support Thunderbolt 3 the Rift S will never work on it so buy some other VR headset. You can tell if your laptop has Thunderbolt 3 by checking if the port has a lightning bolt with an arrow on it. If it doesn't have Thunderbolt 3 then the USB C port will have a logo with a line that splits in three ways, it won't work with the Rift S.
