  • Ayyy, heaps of you cats have followed the advice in my blog Ontology of Task A Structure (www.90plusgamsat.com/the-onto... ) and from my book How to Kick *ss in Task A, and work to let your two topic sentences work in combination to make a case for your argument (contention). Now, I turned my two topic sentences and contention into a syllogism.
    For example
Everything that begins to exist has a cause
    The universe began to exist
Therefore the universe has a cause
This is a sound argument. It is impossible if premise 1 and 2 are correct (and as a matter of interest they are) that the conclusion isn't correct. If the conclusion is incorrect, you can be sure that premise 1 and 2 have an inaccuracy in them. If I let premise 1/2 become topic sentence 1/2 and busy myself in Body Paragraph 1 with proving Topic Sentence 1, and in Body Paragraph 2 with proving Topic Sentence 2 I can be sure coming into my conclusion that I will have made a sound case for my contention and shown the marker than I am logical and considered. It also will have ensured that everything I said was ordered in a common direction (which you want to do for reasons outlined in my blog Clear and Effective Section II Writing: The 5 C's - www.90plusgamsat.com/the-five....
BUT, many (90% +) of you guys tell me you struggle to come up with syllogisms of your own. Which is fine. As long as you make a reasonable case for what you think it's fine, ACER aren't going to know.
Introduce this nifty little technique which I'm going to label the 'Middle Man' for creating a syllogism in 30 seconds.

Would this be a sound syllogism? 1) Willingness to endure discomfort builds tolerance, encouraging individuals to perceive with greater insight. 2) Greater insight creates social change.
Contention) Willingness to endure discomfort creates social change.

Hi Veronica: yes it is, however point one is 2 premises. Really its
      1. willingness to endure discomfort builds tolerance
      2. tolerance encourages individuals to perceive with greater insight
      3. Greater insight creates social change
so, 4. Willingness to endure discomfort creates social change
but i would just say willingness to endure discomfort leads to greater insight, insight to social change, so willingness to endure discomfort to social change and then explain the tolerance in BP1

A willingness to endure discomfort allows the individual to resist the status quo.

Resisting the status quo creates cultural change
