  • Welcome to our TH-cam video on quote interpretation for GAMSAT Section 2! In this video, we'll discuss tips and strategies to help you analyze and deconstruct prompts effectively.
First, it's important to recognize that most GAMSAT prompts include quotes from renowned figures like Abraham Lincoln or Oprah Winfrey. It's essential to approach these prompts with respect for the individuals who said them, assuming that they have valuable insights. Even if you initially think a prompt is simplistic, it's beneficial to explore it deeper and consider that you might be missing the intended meaning.
Next, pay attention to any metaphoric or figurative language used in the prompt. Additionally, look out for words that may not strictly be necessary, such as extraneous metaphors or additional words that could alter the meaning. These choices made by the prompt's author provide clues about their perspective and the message they want to convey.
Since many GAMSAT prompts date back to several hundred years, they have endured the test of time for a reason. The inclusion of metaphoric ideas and specific words demonstrates their significance. By honing in on these elements, you can gain a better understanding of what the prompt communicates and why it has remained relevant for so long.
Keep in mind that ACER, the organization behind GAMSAT, carefully selects prompts to assess candidates for medical school admission. Their intention is to discriminate between candidates, determining who is suitable for the profession. Understanding this motive can help you approach the prompts from the right perspective.
During the interpretation process, focus on the metaphoric ideas and the impact of unnecessary words or language. Let's take an example prompt: "If poverty is the mother of crime, stupidity is the father." Here, consider the non-literal aspects, such as the connotations brought by the words "mother" and "father." "Mother" implies nurturing and sustenance, while "father" represents a short, impassioned spark. These nuances help us comprehend the prompt's deeper meaning.
By analyzing prompts, you can identify social issues and broader themes they address. For instance, this prompt directs our attention towards the connection between poverty and crime, as well as the perception of criminality based on wealth. Understanding these issues allows for a more comprehensive response that goes beyond simple agreement or disagreement.
In this video, we'll also touch upon the ACT scaling test, which provides valuable insights into the written component. We'll explore different levels of answers, ranging from summarizing and paraphrasing to independent thought that engages with the issues and recognizes complexities.
Remember, quote interpretation prompts are invitations to discuss specific topics. To engage effectively, select the part of the quote that corresponds to the theme and contribute to the ongoing conversation. Think of it as participating in a circle discussion, where you respond directly to someone but address the broader conversation.
Join us in this video as we dive deeper into quote interpretation, unraveling the complexities and providing you with valuable tips for GAMSAT Section 2 success. Don't miss out on this insightful discussion!

This type of quote interpretation really helps me to come up with great ideas, but would you recommend focusing on one and developing your contention from it, or trying to integrate them all into your essay?
I find it difficult to cover a lot of ground when using the contention/syllogism structure for Task A - I try to include these ideas in my evaluation of the topic sentences, but sometimes I feel they stray from it.
