This four years old comment best describes it, I had the idea in my head for so long yet I couldn't put it into words, this is exactly why C'thun is the scariest of them all
In my humble opinion, C'thun has one of the creepiest and most unsettling voices of all the WoW bosses because it's so emotionally detached and cold. Yogg-Saron's is intimidating, cool, and scary but there's something about C'thun's that just strikes a deeper chord for me. I think because even though Yogg-Saron's is more overtly frightening there's a warmth of rage to his voice, while C'thun's is a cold, quiet terror.
C'thun's voice lines are why he is best. A random god found in a pit. One of unimaginable power able to manifest his voice as reality around him. Not only that. His voice does not shriek, or bellow, and come in overbearing audio distortions. Just a callous voice bordering pity, or sympathy.
"Your friends will abandon you" "You betray your friends" "You will die" ...... *trying to think of something else to say (dammit) "Your heart will explode" Yeah that's it. "Your heart will explode" *nods in self approval
@@lapatjani3171 "You are already dead" => "Omae wa mou shindeiru" Reference to fist of the north star, kenshiro stating "you are already dead"; Exploding heart referencing what happens to his victims after he uses the forbidden knowledge to make them kinda... explode, lol. (As far as I know)
I think I'm going need to make a misunderstood C'Thun meme where it shows the 2nd part of his phrases, like "Your heart will explode . . . with joy" and "Your friends will abandon you . . . if you mistreat them"
finally someone says it, so true. just listen to "death is close" at 0:38 in hearthstone: th-cam.com/video/dMsKuBkEXB8/w-d-xo.html and then compare it to the one here right at the start. its embarassing, how can almost 10 year spass and the voice+effects can get so much worse.
Its perfect how calm the voice is. Alot of other bosses wouldnt be able to pull off the feeling of dread without shouting it seems, and then they just come off as over the top
I'll never forget the first time I heard this back in 2020 when the gates opened and classic was at it's peak, I honestly miss those lockdown gaming times so much.
my first time in the temple of ahn'qiraj, C'Thun suddenly whispered "You... are... already... dead" to me when I was just a few minutes in. I had genuine chills of fear.
I was in AQ alone, trying to solo mobs inside the tunnels, was excited about the fact that the red mount can drop, when suddenly I hear "Death. Is. Close." I almost shit my pants and freezed staring at the computer screen... *nothing to do here*
Nonsense, you can never have enough of C'Thun, I love how he belittles you as you fight him, making you feel as if it's hopeless and nothing can stop him, you become depressed, you become reclusive, his whispers drive you to insanity and at the apex of it all, drives you to suicide, thus eliminating one enemy in his path of Hyperversal conquest.
I think the reason he's such a memorable boss is his lines are short simple, to the point. The voice actor isn't trying to sound overly epic like some raid bosses.
when I did on my rogue me and a shaman in my raid heard the voices and he said :"it keeps saying 'your friends will abandon you'" me:"mine keeps saying 'you will betray your friends'" him: "O_O"
When your getting spooked and then the dude says "your heart will explode" and now your not sure if these are whispers from an old god or just crappy disco lyrics
I keep coming back to this clip periodically. As cool as it is that Illidan is returning, I'm much more interested in the possible return of C'thun if they explore his potential involvement with Illidan.
+Magniconi We never really killed C'thun (we only injured a small part of him really) so he could always come back! (Or maybe introduce us to N'Zoth...)
Every time I see this boss, I half expect to hear something from the Curiosity Core in Portal. (Orange one, "What is that?") really - how awesome would that be?!
The "You're heart will explode" is my favorite one because it breaks the fourth wall, but honestly all of these break the fourth wall. Cthun isnt talking to the "hero" of WoW but talking to the person playing the game, the actual gamer. Most people don't understand this context. Back when you were playing with 40 people on this boss, the final boss of AQ40, it was ridiculously hard. There was so much management with dps, threat, the lasers and tentacles, and generally watching out for your raid remembers. My body would pump so much adrenaline from being on the edge of my seat as we got closer and closer to taking him down. In the voice chat you can hear our guild and raid leaders voice get loud starting to tremble as they announce the next phase was coming and instructing us to get into our positions. The that one healer dies you can see the raid start to get staggered and you hear "Death is close". But man, my heart was pounding. I remember the first C'thun kill we did back in vanilla. I kid you not, my heart was pumping so hard that I could feel like it was going to pop out of my neck. Then out of no where C'thun whispers "You're heart will explode". Still gives me chills when I think about it. It was like the developers knew how the raiders were going to feel as they got closer to killing C'thun. And it made sense because the developers themselves were hardcore raiders. Its one of my favorite moments in my gaming life.
What makes this terrifying is the fact he is the god of madness. this being's true aim is to send your mind into madness and cause chaos amongst people. this voice is so calm, almost comforting in a very uncanny way. this is the voice you would hear before losing the clutches of sanity. this is the voice he chooses to send you mad. that in itself terrifies me.
I like to imagine that the reason C'thun even bothers speaking is because this is him being friendly. This is him having relatable human conversation with the mass of people he is about to bring to death. I like to imagine this is him trying to bring you comfort, by participating in normal things that humanity finds comforting, like engaging in dialog, and for a moment, appearing as something that conforms to logic and reason.
I've got C'thun's voices set as my mobile notifications. Hearing "your heart will explode" and 'your friends will abandon you" throughout the day is pure win. Get some funny looks at work though:)
I had the "You will die!" emote as my Omen warning signal for aggro. When I went into Temple of Ahn-Qiraj and heard those words at the twin encounter even though I wasn't attacked at all I logged out and updated omen. The Old God do have a talent on playing tricks on you I can tell you that.
Me and a few friends were raiding AQ40 the other day. We heard the whispers, so I started yelling at him to shut up, while my friend replied that he had a "Bedroom voice"
i think the creepiest thing about it is how the voice is so calm and soft not like other raid bosses that sound like they smoke 2 packs of cigs a day and are on a whiskey only diet
C'thun is such a creepy WoW boss even after all these years he's been around lurking in the depths of Ahn'Qiraj he still gives you shivers when you hear that echoing voice of his...
I have some information for Cataclysm! Uldum will be split into three wings. Two are dungeons, one is a raid. C'thun will be resurrected by Cho'Gall, a powerful ogre magi from Warcraft 2. C'thun will be the main boss of the Uldum raid and Cho'gall will be the mutated last boss of Grim Batol, an instance.
I love how his voice doesn't sound human, but rather an imitation that isn't perfect.
