  • Ian Royle speaks to Tim Crossley about a second-hand model Vauxhall Omega, who talks about the car's performance and handling, as well as it's practicality and overall value for money. This particular model is a 2.0 litre GLSi, but a 2.5 litre V6 is also available which produces 168bhp, for those looking for a bit more grunt.

    2020 and I just picked up a 2.6 V6 2001 reg for £700 with 70 k on the clock 😁

    It might be a bit of a push to describe the Omega as a high quality car, but in comparison with the Rover 800 thats probably a fair assessment. It is also a much more modern and better driving car than the 800. So yes Ian, you save yourself £2k and buy the 800, you'll pay that back and more in repairs when it breaks on you (which it will) and have much more dated and generally inferior car to show for it too.

    senator and carlton is the same car, how is one bigger than the other?

    • @khajiit8221
      @khajiit8221 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Senator was slightly bigger and had more equipment as standard than the Carlton. Senator therefore competed with the likes of the BMW 7 series, and the Carlton took on the 5 series BMW. The Omega was somewhere in between the 2 older cars and acted as a replacement for both the Carlton and Senator, competing with the majority of the executive market.

    • @bensmithkent22
      @bensmithkent22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The senator was never 7 series class! It was higher spec and had more road presence than the carltons. I loved senators but it was really a 530 and e320 rival and could you argue possibly low end xj6 as that was cheaper than s classes and beemer 7s. Basically the omega elite filled the void the senator left behind.

      @@bensmithkent22 I hear what you are saying but I drove a 7 series back in the mid 1990s, nice car but did not think it was much better than the Senator I had at the time. Interesting what markets they try to fill now - BMW, Mercedes and Audi all make different types of large/mid sized execs now, and the other manufactures like Ford and Vauxhall have more or less gave up on the executive saloons, I do not think they make anything like that anymore.

      @@bensmithkent22 YES but NO. Senator was something between classes, for sure was 5 series competitor, but also for 7 series in some few things maybe. But senator rival 3 series??? come on man, 10000% no, 3 series was too small. D-class, senator was E/F class

      Rover 800 is not as bad as the motoring press made it out to be back in the day, though generally I agree the Omega is a far superior car. Mind you, the Omega was not quite as reliable as the Carlton and Senator. I can comment as I have driven all 4 cars I have mentioned :)

    Small boot, cramped rear seat space, a smooth thirsty V6, better off with a Vectra hatchback or Vectra estate. The Vectra saloon didn't sell well.

    • @rafaelramosmelim735
      @rafaelramosmelim735 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Too high rear end with limited visibility. You are almost certain to reverse into something with the saloon. The estate and hatchback vectra are very good cars only the 16 valve 1.8 is a bit thirsty on oil and the 1.7 td isuzu diesel will overheat in the summer if you turn the ac on at motorway speeds but fixable with a drilled thermostat and a bigger radiador from a 2.0 dti model
