  • Join me as I take a tour of my 1997 Vauxhall Omega Elite turbo diesel estate automatic. Marvel at the hideous 'wood' on the dashboard, be inspired by the fully working display matrix. Oh this is all good.
May contain poor camera work, wind noise and a stupid car alarm.

Like you've said, it's down to what you want it for. £20 will only get you 100 miles in a 3L v6 but it will do it at 150-160mph all day and not ask for anything less. my ex unmarked police 3L elite has 160k on the clock now and still gets a boot full every day, the engine is super smooth and if you are ultra careful you can get about 34mpg out of them. i wouldnt hesitate to check mine over and then drive it to germany, thrash it about the autobahn and the nurburgring, then drive home. the omega is truly an underestimated car in v6 form.

The Vauxhall Omega is definitely one of the nicest cars ever built. I find they are quite rare on the roads these days but occasionally I see some for sale on Ebay. It's nice to see when people appreciate old cars. An Uncle of mine used to have the saloon version until about 14 years ago, it was a lovely car. One thing I really like about the estate version is the huge amount of boot space, it's an ideal family car. And if you just happen to have a pet dog, it can settle in the boot area with its bed. You could also have roof bars fitted and buy a roof box to store your luggage.

I had a 95 TD estate, I chipped the ECU to take the engine power to how it was meant to be for the 2.5 6 pot BMW lump, The power improvement was so intense (120 bhp to 160bhp if i recall correctly) that had to change the original weak auto box (AR25) for the stronger 3.0 petrol box (AR35) which involved a simple mod of changing the g/box bellhousing, Mine went like a lunatic, unfortunately it hit a patch of spilled diesel coming off a roundabout in the wet & ended up in a ditch & hitting a tree, I still miss that car & that happened over 3 years ago.

Love the omega it cracked me up when the alarm was going off because thats exactly what mine does if something like a football hits it or a cat jumps on the bonnet.
The 2.5 turbo diesel estate is quite a sought after car now. Mine just flew through its mot today with no advisories @ 160,000 miles, just booked in to have probably its last ever timing belt & water pump change, unless it can make 200k but we shall see!

    Hi Ian
Had to watch the Omega series since I had the V6 petrol version with all the bells and whistles. Unfortunately all the bells and whistles slowly failed and the car became a money pit.
The arm would go off all the time - unfixable. The self lev. suspension also packed up - unfixable. The heated drivers seat shorted and the fuse for it runs the whole dash -unfixable.
A truly dreadful car, but drove really well.

Massive spec motors at bargain basement prices. If you're prepared to fix the stuff you can yourself, they offer super comfy transport for very little money. I love stuff like this, had quite a few cheap luxo barges over the years and don't get depressed if they need a few bob spending on them, just think how much they were new, chuck a bit of cash at them, carry on wafting around in something that you've probably paid about 5% of its 'out the showroom' price.

I went to Wales in the late 1980s (being English). Went into a pub and got glared at. Served very weak beer and it was made obvious that I was unwelcome. Now, more or less 30 years later I have yet to return. Things may have improved but at that time there was a definite 'go away' vibe to the people.

I'm enjoying these Omega videos! I've often found myself hankering after one, but never quite got around to actually buying one. I'm a Mk3 Cavalier man and have owned many over the years. It seemed that every time I've almost bought an Omega a nice Cav has come along instead. These days I'm in a (dull but worthy) modern Astra, but if the old car itch gets, uhm, itchy enough to scratch then I may just try an Omega. But I'll probably end up in another Cavalier.

That is a good looking car. I'd never realised how massive the load area is on these. Fold the back seat down and you've practically got a van! In fact, you could probably kip in it at a pinch.

The only thing I'd suggest you do is if this has the m47 engine and automatic, at the time BMW marketed the gearbox oil to be lifetime, however it isn't, in the booklet for the exact gearbox from the manufacturer it suggests that the oil be changed every 60k, so I'd seriously consider changing it if I were you. Rob Jenner (e39 guru) of Dartford Transmissions and Autocare LTD (on Facebook) has put a copy of the original booklet online.

+HubNut That works too. I spent a few weeks driving around in a very unusual manual Omega MV6 civilian model (a lot of MV6s started life as police cars and were quite basic) with pretty much all the option boxes ticked and it was an amazing car with power on oversteer available on any roundabout at will. I loved it and if it wasn't for the fact that they tend to be rusty, and this one was, I would have been very tempted to flog my Focus and buy it. It was a lot of fun and much better than a same period BMW...

What sort of MPG are you getting with the Omega? I don't even know what the official numbers are (though a quick Google search should reveal that - 39, apparently), but those will be the official numbers, as opposed to the actual numbers. Is 32 correct? I'm sure my Mini's supposed to get 42, although the most I've got out of it is 38 over a tank, which is only 40 litres - which is annoyingly small, lasting around 300 miles (that's usually when I fill up. I could probably get 350 out of it. 400 might be wishful thinking), I don't take any notice of the average consumption according the car's computer either.
Oh, that's a shame that the Omega can't complete with the Chevette on those roundabouts! ;)
Scotland was beautiful, and the roads were lovely as well, assuming you didn't get stuck behind a tractor, or lorry, but otherwise 60mph on little tiny roads. I still got overtaken by locals, even a lady in a Renault Scenic with her children driving home from school, on a narrow country lane, by an absolutely beautiful picturesque Loch - I was already doing 65, probably shouldn't brag about that. People were friendly, helpful, patient and just so much nicer than they are in the South of the country. Even in Manchester the people were a lot nicer. I haven't ever been to Wales, but I've seen pictures of the scenery and it does look lovely. I know you get around a lot, but there really must be a lot of people that spend their time going abroad on holiday, and just stay in the same towns without actually seeing much of the country at all. I still live in the house I grew up in as a child, and my father still lives in the same town he was born in, if it wasn't for his job I doubt he'd see much of the country. Makes me think back to people before cars were readily available, born in one town, if they were lucky travelled 20 miles out of the town in their life and that was their entire world. Really must see more of the country, and appreciate it more without taking it for advantage. Another one of my pointless rants.

Does the alarm have its own rechargeable battery in it? The Saab 9-3 and 9-5 had this arrangement, and with the passage of time the battery would degrade and randomly set off the alarm.
    The Saab fix was
    1) have the battery replaced by a '
    'specialised'
    2) visit breakers with tools in hand, find newer model, and remove from under the passenger wing (the module had the date pressed into it,so man maths dictate that a newer one should last longer) part with £30 of your hard earned notes and don't make eye contact with owner,or owners dog/s
(For fear of dropping all the fuses and switches and assorted clips that fell into your inside coat pocket).

The alarm system could just have crapped out, resulting in it going off on its own, they can end up doing that after a number of years, particularly if the components were of the "That'll do" standard, might be possible to rewire the car to run without the alarm as nobody actually pays attention to them, but dunno how you'd go about it...

The way to make an estate look 'right' is to get rid of any impression that it is an economical modification of a saloon car. So rear door tops that taper down, or in, only to have a horizontal roof atop that goes on and on astern of the doors: looks crap. Rear section windows that looks like a 3rd party add-on designed by someone else in a different place: looks crap. Volvo: looks right. (Not just Volvo)

You have " the only car you ever need", the 2CV, yet you now have a complex barge, is that sensible.

Yes. The 2CV does many things well, but peaceful cruising is not one of them! That may change once I apply sound deadening of course. The Omega also does not leak rainwater into my shoes. There's a lot to be said for having more than 29bhp too. Again, one day, I might be able to improve the 2CV in that regard as well...

41/g isnt that good for a diesel. Sure this is old but is kind of the same generation as the original volvo v/s40 and you could do that ins the 2.0t /t4 versions of those.

This is the straight six 2.5 BMW diesel engine. Supremely smooth even by today's standards, but lacking modern urgency and economy.

Sold on to a friend. He sold it last year to an enthusiast, which is nice. I really didn't get on with this car.

I've had a few Omegas over the years, so many I've sort of lost count, think my current 2.2 lpg estate is number 14...Here is one of my old Mv6's, only a 2.6 but it did have a manual box.m.th-cam.com/video/uOabwVSIcsQ/w-d-xo.html
