Because they overpriced them... since when was the best truck 125,000? They used to be 59,000 not many years ago.. the double price is not inflation, it is corporate greed...
and i made parts for tesla, dodge, corvettes even.. and they do not pay most the staff enough to get a loan on a new corvette... never..

The cost of any new vehicle is a big problem and people do not get up to buy a new car as they did in the past over a new model mostly but when they do the cost still gets in the way

You can replace a lot of remanufactured engines, trannies and rearends for less than TEN grand a problem! If RUST FREE, 40 or more years is not uncommon.
My car is from 2012 and I just love it. There’s no rust, it’s really fun to drive, has the right amount of tech, it’s paid for. New cars are expensive and they’re the same as 12 years ago but with a giant screen.
Exactly, I have a 2012 Mazda3 Skyactiv with over 200k and it’s still running great, never had any issues with it. I don’t want a bunch of screens in my car.

My independent mechanic could tell you stories of how much people are willing to spend to to repair their older vehicles because they dont like new vehicle offerings and/or are awaiting a technology shakeout.
Quality on new cars has dropped. I wouldn't want to buy one. Buying a new car today requires the manufacturer to survive or you won't be able to get repair parts. I also want a refreshed model y when it comes out, but with elon musk laying of tons of people just to pad the earnings report, I cannot buy one. I'll keep what I got until tesla is musk free. Maybe the SEC will finally do their job and give musk the boot for defrauding investors with the pay package that a judge in delaware cancelled. They almost did it over that meaningless tweet. But they are completely ignoring the court case where the board was determined to be yes men for elon musk no matter how crooked the things he asks for is.

I love older cars so I view something 15 years old as almost new. Mine currently are 26 to 45 years old.
I have a 2013 car but I'd rather drive my 1975 Camaro even tho it likes gas.
I still have my 2009 Nissan Altima. That's a total of 15 years and still running like new. I also have my 2001 Toyota Corolla. No rust, and the engine is so quiet and silky smooth.

Debit cards for keys, apps on your phone to start the car, yeah, changing the oil every 15000 , nobody looks underneath, don’t know if it’s painted, rusted, undercoated, but hey 400 bi weekly and it connects to my phone! Yeah no thanks 😂
Them 4.6 modular engines are tanks. I still daily my 2003 Mustang GT with that engine

Still driving my 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV, which got a warranty replacement battery pack back in 2020 . . . yeah, a 12 year old electric car with a fairly fresh battery. I'm hanging onto it until the industry-at-large who sells in the US decides to offer a similarly-sized EV with an LFP battery and some sort of V2X capability. The less complex and "connected," the better.
What were the warranty terms? How did you qualify?

@@ultrastoat3298 It is one of the earliest EVs using lithium other than the original tesla roadster. I think it is also air cooled battery with a very low cycle life compared to newer evs.
@@rp9674 If you're the 1st or 2nd owner and you're within the 10 year / 100k mile parameter, your battery is covered. The car was 8 years old when this happened to me. If the new pack lasts as long as the original one, the car should be running in 2028.
@@ultrastoat3298 Actually, it's as safe and functional as any similarly-sized Japanese subcompact from this period, such as the Honda FIT. Batteries were very expensive when these cars were new. So, ahead of it's time. If this same car showed up today with a Chinese nameplate and a slightly larger pack, people would be all over it.

That is become a much more practical solution I have pretty much come to that conclusion. I don’t need to tow or haul significant weight so the ability to tow 3500# would be plenty

Hyundia has a cool little truck/car looking thing.
Thats why I have a hyundai elantra touring model and a toyota matrix as well. Fold the back seats down and I can fit a ton of stuff in them. Even had a new 70" flat screen in one of them still in the box. The hyundai has a hitch if I do need it.

Car tech hasnt greatly improved over the last year. So the insurance industry needs a more legitimate excuse for the 22% increase in premiums since last year.
Repairs actually are getting more expensive. It isn’t just tech. The parts and labor cost more.
Also there are more accidents.
Blame Miami drivers for that.
Why would anyone expect tech to drive insurance cost? It's parts & labor, which are driven by supply & demand.
More shark lawyers out there trying to get big settlements on fender benders.... Another factor is these EV's, if you hit one a fender bender can cause the insurance company to total it instead of trying to replace the battery.

Don't you have to do silly things like accelerate slow, braking hard, and tailgate cars? The metrics people talk about that can affect what you pay seem to be nonsense. I saw people complaining that they had to drive like an old blind grandma or use fsd to get a good rate.
Any metric that makes you drive different than all other cars on the road is dangerous. It will cause accidents from other people hitting you.

I still see people complaining about them. People in california are exempt from this kind of metric based billing, but it exists in other states.

Normal people do not tailgate and it is crazy that an insurance company wants you to. Normal people only care that you are not too close, there is no such thing as too far behind someone. The only possible explanation is they are setting rules so people will generate data they want the AI to learn on. Too far back doesn't help them teach the AI what they want to teach it.
On the auto insurance issue, of the average car is actually getting older and 2/3s of the cars in the US are older, then the insurance companies claim that new cars and the technology are causing the higher cost doesn't pan out. I think it simply greed and that they can get away with it unfortunately.
I never have collision insurance and so far I'm way, way ahead.

Tesla can no longer sell its sedan/hatchbacks having reached the saturation point until they come out with a CUV/SUV that most Americans want. Tesla is likely to remain a small niche maker like Lotus or Aston Martin.
Not buying Chinese in the US. We don't want Chinese caneras and computers in our cars, and we don't want tofu dreg on our streets. Those things are little surveillance machines that could be remotely detonated in wartime.

Shouldn't all the costly sensors cut the insurer's cost? Cars with sensors should have fewer and less lethal accidents thereby shrinking the insurer's spend, no? I think they're just being glutenous and greedy. If the sensors don't dramatically cut accidents then the cost-benefit trade-off isn't there and we're being ripped off.

I don't think all the fancy technology really makes cars that much safer, but they sure as hell cost a lot more, and there's a lot more that can fail.
It cost a lot more money to fix all the high tech garbage if you are in an accident. Thats why your insurance is higher. For example I replaced a messed up rear bumper for somebody with a non damaged one from a salvage place for like $75 or something. But if they wouldve wanted the rear sensors that got messed up replaced as well it wouldve been around $1000.
My car is 63 ,1961 Comet ,200 six , 1994 Tremec t5 manual , dual exhaust , headers , one barrel carb , The Comet gets 26 hwy , at 65 MPG .
Another factor to older cars is that owners maybe holding off on buying a new car until an EV with the features and price they want is available. That's what I'm doing.
Costs going down, designs improving, more selection coming, NACS plugs. Meanwhile, ICE prices creep up.
I'm not seeing that as a factor.Low cost reliable Ev's aren't coming.

Family has a 12 year old Toyota Prius costs just pennies to operate and still running flawlessly without issues at 260K miles.
The other city that uses double decker buses is Hong Kong. BYD already sells cars there.
There are double deck buses in NYC but I think they are not owned by the city.
Legacy auto can't cut it in the EV space so clearly we need to make sure no one else can sell EV's affordably in the US with terriffs.. .. ;)

EVs can't cut the mustard in rural environments, in high country, or in back country, and can't even tow a cattle trailer, so let's throw EVs in the gutter until someone makes one that can actually do hard work without shutting down in winter or getting only 80 miles range when towing. If it doesn't have a runaway battery fire due to a tiny fender bender, that is.
I have a 2000 Accord EX and I intend to keep it until battery chemistry for EVs gets truly sorted, and I want a vehicle that will last 25 years as well!

In the rural US, the average car is over 20 years old. It is cheaper now to fix your old car than to buy new

I think it would interesting to know about repairing EVs after accidents. I understand insurance companies total EVs often because there are very few repair shops that can deal with them. This drives up insurance rates for EVs.
Any dealer repair shop would repair their own vehicle. The only problem might be very small EV companies.
@@juliahello6673 Tesla, Rivian & all the new EV makers have no dealers who can also service but some of have “authorized” service shops but far too few & very (months to get parts) slow. There was a story of a Hyundai Ioniq 5 which ran over something on the highway resulting in little bump under the car/battery. The Hyundai dealer refused to work on it so it had to be totaled. This hit the press after which Hyundai corporate retracted. We don’t know how it was resolved. We need more shops that can service EVs so the insurance can come down.
@@ltkwok Any Tesla store has a repair shop. There are 264 in the United States. Rivian certainly has authorized service shops and I have toured one that is near where I live. Rivian has 29 service centers and a mobile service tech will come to your home if you live too far away (same as Tesla). Perhaps you are thinking that Tesla and Rivian don't have service centers because they don't techically have dealerships - they have stores instead? Stories like the Ioniq one mean nothing. If it hit the press then it was a one-off that the press was trying to pass off as typical. If all Ioniqs were being refused service we would know about it. Whenever you "hear a story" from the press (about anything, not just EVs), ask yourself whether it's a one off and then try to find information to see if it is or not. The press are not scientists or logicians - they are fine with anecdotes passing as generalities. If people fall for it and they get lots of clicks then they have done their job (according to them).
The issue is battery fires. One tiny fissure in any of the cells, one small crack, short, or failure can start the chain reaction. We've all seen the results of EV fires for the last few years--parking garages, that airport in the UK, bus and trolley fires in London and Australia, etc. It's not worth the risk to try and fix em when you can't see the internal danger.
@@MrProy33 There are far fewer EV fires compared to ICE fires per million vehicles. But EV fires are hard to put out. The EV makers & fire fighters need to work together to figure out how to put out the fires quickly.
My new insurance rate is $178/month for 2024 Camry and 2002 pickup. We had a 2013 Buick about 2 months ago we bought new.
Still have my 2014 sports coupe car. Car was paid off since 2017. I refuse to get in debt again especially with newer cars of the same power and features cost $50k+. Also expensive car insurance and extremely high interest rates for folks with excellent credit. Since then I have been using the “car payment” money in the stock market and have been happy since then.
I’m going to keep my car until the wheels fall off.
Nothing is compelling and priced well enough for me to take a plunge.
11 Accord and 12 CT200h are still very reliable and fuel costs / maintenance are next to nothing compared to having car payments.
Will be interested in BEVs once solid state batteries offer 20 years lifespan.
We’ll probably move into a subscription model soon.

I drive a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT AWD with over 215,000 miles to work, my wife drives a 2015 Escalade esv that we’re going to do rust repair to, and I have a 2003 GMC 2500HD WT for truck stuff.
I didn't think a Journey could make it to 200,000

Auto insurance is going way up in part because of the average car age.
Replacement parts are hard to come by because many people are not buying new but are doing everything they can to extend the life of their older car. Insurance companies are having to pay top dollar to repair shops in order to get them.
Consequently this will also make insurance companies more likely to "total" a car rather than repair it... even if relatively new. Cheaper in the long run for them.
Big deal. The average car in Cuba is from ca. 1958- THAT'S old.

Truck are kept longer simpler because even old and beaten up they still serve their function. Luxury cars after the new model comes out lose their prestige and value drops like a rock.

We already sell several cars made in China in the US, including ones from Volvo and Polestar, so I think the solution may lie in China partnering with US automakers to sell their cars under a US brand. One thing is for sure, the easiest way to get EVs down to a price that will get more Americans on board with electrification is with Chinese made EVs. Even with a slightly higher price than in China (so that the US companies can make money too) it would very likely be much cheaper than what US companies are offering currently. This might also light a fire under US automakers to motivate them even further to push ahead.
The problem isn't where it's from, it's who is making them. A BYD factory worker makes 5k a YEAR. If quality imports are allowed the European and American auto industries will vanish. Just like every single other unprotected industry vanished. This isn't about technology, it's about Chinese labor laws being extremely unfriendly to workers and china suppressing its currency value to artificially cheapen its products.
@@ethanwelner1230 To be fair, the cost of living in China is a fraction of what it is here, so, yeah, $5000/year is low by our standards but not nearly as low by their own standards. If the Chinese-made cars were of poor quality then they wouldn't do well here anyway, but by most accounts the quality is actually quite good which would potentially spell doom for domestic automakers. Plus, it's pretty clear that the Chinese government ha been heavily subsidizing EV manufacturers for a while, further complicating things.

I have a 2011 Nissan Sentra (129K miles) and a 2013 Nissan Sentra (145K miles). Both are near showroom condition.
Can pickups load and carry weight like the old pickups
much better than old pickups. A f150 today is nearly on par with my 96 f250
Not if they are EVs. Not one EV can haul more than 6k lbs, except the new Silverado, and if fully loaded, they need to be recharged every 60-90 miles, depending on slope, speed, and accessory usage (heater, AC). They are useless for anything other than small toy hauling, and frankly, the fear of a battery fire is too great for people who need large trucks in areas without paving.
I can also say that the sales pitches are dumb. No work truck owner ever cared about 0-60 time. EV trucks are designed by city engineers, instead of rural truck drivers who know what we need.

Most of the insurance rates are up is because of the EV issues and costs.
Another reason for pickup trucks lasting longer is because they are second or even third vehicles for many people. I have a 27 year old truck, but I only drive it a few thousand miles a year.

My wife’s 2014 Highlander Limited has the same options as a 2024 Highlander she owns it. Why would I want to trade up to something that is the same and who knows if the reliability is going to be better?
How about reporting on lingering manufacturer profit margin expansion as a source of large vehicle price inflation.
If I was one of the big 3 I would start offering auto insurance as part of the car purchase but undercut the big insurance giants by considerable amounts...if the auto Industry wants us to purchase their cars they will need to offer cheap affordable insurance and lower their prices...
That increase in average age seems to correlate with the introduction of Tesla's automobiles to the market.

Everyone is switching to Tesla’s plug. Why keep investing in the old plugs? I think a lot of buyers are also holding off until everything comes with the same plug.

Love all the folks that have never bought a new car talkin' on here like the new car market is aimed at them.
Modern cars cost a fortune to repair. A woman driving a pickup truck hit the right rear of my five year old luxury car breaking the rear suspension. Her insurance spent a fortune. A new plastic rear bumper cover with sensors cost $1,200. The components of the rear suspension cost $4,000. With body work, painting and labor the total came to $12,000. They also paid for the rental of an equivalent level car at $110 a day for three and a half weeks. They couldn’t write the car off because it was still worth $28,000 after five years so they had eat the repair costs.
I’m not selling my 08 Jeep Liberty any time soon. Only had 95k miles on it why get something new? Even if the engines goes out it’ll be cheaper to spend 4k putting a new one in than it would be risking buying one of these used cars or new cars
I can give a few reasons for this trend.
Over intrusive safety tech on the latest models.
Besides the obvious performance advantage of an EV the infrastructure needed for your place of residence to really get the most out of an EV is expensive.
Also the long term battery packs from cars like the first Nissan leafs are showing people the pitfalls of the EV experience.
The latest tech needs to be put in the right places such as better longer life batteries and thirty minutes charge times from 10 to 100% the RAV 4 is an example of what people really want with a extremely good balance of features with a reasonable price for a replacement battery pack if ever needed.

Who's going to pay the tax tariff for the imported car? The people who need them the most as price will tack on to the consumer. Another government greed and wanton use.
Here's something to report, because you asked: I call it change anxiety. I saw this in the desktop computer market in its early days. A company announced a new product, so existing sales stopped. The company lost its revenue stream and had to stop doing business. The same type of thing may be happening with vehicle markets. Many near-term changes may arouse caution in would-be buyers. So, they are waiting for technologies, production, economies of scale and the overall market to stabilize. No one wants to buy a rapidly obsolescing vehicle, especially when they already have one of those.
Osbourne Effect is what it's called.
In this case, it's different in teo ways:
1. The vast majority, around 90% of Anericans, didn't ask for this. We have good looking cars that run well. We have trucks that do real work. We have resale value and a thriving used car market. It was a perfect system. Now, it's ruined.
That makes it an issue of productivity and a massive governmental failure to protect an industry it was supposed to regulate.
2. Americans hate mandates. We love freedom of choice. We hate being told what to do or what to purchase. Ask the British. They still remember. There was no public conversation. There were just top-down mandates from emissions boards, but we never got to vote on it.
That makes it an issue of principle. Now, many of us are anti-EV because of the language used by EV apologists, the green lies used to try and propagandize, and the forced nature of this unnecessary and unsolicited transition.
@@MrProy33It's always funny when people who want a smaller government that stays out of their business and cry about how government is interfering with the market, are angry with the govt for not stepping in and protecting their favorite industry.
I agree. Those people are silly. Government is supposed to regulate industry, keep it flowing smoothly and not letting companies get too much monopolizing or political power. When that happens, government and industry do well, and labor is better seeved by both institutions.
But when small companies with a niche agenda get political movement without public conversation or vote, everyone loses. When entire industries are being offset by top down mandates that do not have popular support, well, the people are supposed to voice up and rebuke both the agencies and the private companies who would usurp public trust.

too much technology is being pushed onto new cars making them cost alot more and easier to break and cost more to repair. Plus if you wreck the car even minor fender bender and have slightly more miles on the car. Insurance companies are opting to consider a total loss instead of paying for repairs. that's why owners are keeping the older more simpler cars that are easy to repair even DIY project.

the thing is new cars have nothing new, i have a 2017 Audi a6 and a 2021 Audi a6 corporate vehicle, the tech is the only difference, and it’s the one thing many people don’t need, and you have to pay tens of thousands of dollars to get the useless crap, why? It just make no sense, and it’s always down sizing the engine and making it more unreliable, and adding even more things you don’t need also worse looking. Unless they give 10k off msrp like pre covid, a 2k even 1k financial incentive it’s not enough reason for me to switch vehicle

The USA in trouble printing too much money out of thin air, inflation(QE fancier term) causing debt, high interest rates causing both gas and EV sales to slow. Inflation caused supply chain issue. You can blame Putin, greedy corporations but the actual blame is our government taking the easy way out not worrying about long term consequences. Now car lots full of $75-$100,000 trucks/suv’s no one can afford, LOT ROT!! Consumers and government with historic debt, deficit spending, and continued overspending/buying more debt to pay past debt. Ouch
The government feels it easier to continue with the hidden tax, inflation vs actually increasing taxes and control spending. If the economy was resilient there would be less debt and more savings

Not yet because 60% of potential owners have no ability to charge at home, work, or out running errands. No big ramp up of EVs until that changes, maybe a decade from now at the earliest.
@@davidmccarthy6061 that still means 40% of potential owners could charge their EVs. And that number could easily shoot upwards if we focused less on expanding DC fact charging networks and invested a bit more into level 2 city charging networks.
