Hey, the HH.Holmes recap you did contains a tiny error - he was suspected for the death of Mr. Holton but Mrs. Holton survived well passed Holmes's execution, living in the stores area Thoughts....not actually sure if both Holtons lived passed Holmes' execution but I know for sure Mrs. Holton survived and was the person Holmes bought a pharmacy from as she was the owner and doctor P.S all this is if my memory serves me well - but I am 99% sure of what I said

The rumbling and slamming against the door does not start until after the Curator rips out the page with the name of the serial killing, leading me to believe the Curator took matters into his own hands and let the serial killer live instead of letting him die, upsetting something or someone, the curator's "higher ups". The Curator often remarks he is jealous of us being able to make choices and interfere, whereas he is only allowed to observe.
Adding two things I noticed: Munday's "dead" body was identified through dental records and our Munday/killer doesn't speak at all which made me think he pulled his teeth out to leave them in the warehouse fire. The hotel's body counter originally starts at 0178 which is the same number of people who have died in an old ship wreck described in a stone memorial on the path to the lookout point when Charlie/Mark hiked up the rocks to get footage.
no he actually fake his dental records by swapping his an the fake corpses dental record when he broke into th police station. H quite obviously still has teeth. Look at the lake chapter before he's pulled into the propeller
The number changes to 0180 after the ferry leaves, implying DuMet/Munday increased his body count. You'll know who and how he got an additional 2 kills if you get the ending of Kate and Mark being dragged back to the island on the ferry, DuMet/Munday is standing on the shore. .with a sniper rifle. . . If you remember, before the dinner scene, the fraud DuMet was seen by Jamie fleeing the island. . with his daughter. . .
I had a theory that Munday had a partner helping him, and I'm surprised you didn't touch on this. So I noticed that in the saw trap in the spa, Ryan survived by letting Monica die. We see his mannequin still standing, nothing seemed to happen to him. I think he somehow became Munday's partner, dressing up in an identical outfit to help him out in the hotel. I also noticed that while Du'Met was chasing the girls outside with an axe, he wasn't holding the axe when he walked into the curing house where Mark and Charlie hid. Mark also tells Charlie that he wonders if Du'Met has a partner. He didn't have the axe inside the lighthouse either. But when the cop arrived on the dock, Du'Met appeared out of nowhere holding the axe again, where he held on to the boat, then was killed by the propeller. I think the hand we see grabbing the mask on the shore was Ryan, who continues the cycle after Munday had died. I also think they had a second hotel to continue the murders, and that's the hotel where the girl who "won" the contest at the end gets invited to.
it also explains despite having full control over the place, how Du'Met could just almost seamlessly teleport - especially if you get pushed off the roof as Jane - there is no way he got down there that fast without a partner
Makes sense because the killer couldn't have just fast travelled to the characters. Like, he caught up with my characters at very similar times to each while both groups were in completely different areas. Also the killer should have, like, died from that boat crash.
so much of this story can be missed if you don’t play exactly right. I’ve watch two different playthroughs already and some of these scenes just don’t happen because of choices and then makes the story so much harder to figure out
I was thinking the same thing. I watched Gabsmolders and many of these scenes just flat out didn't happen, like Mark meeting the dog Connie or Erin hearing the recording of Charlie.
Same! I was so confused why Jamie spoke to Erin in the clinic and it was never addressed and why Mark knew the name of the dog. Seeing this video has helped things make more sense.
No same. I saw both Gabsmolders and Jacksepticeye play it and there were so many scenes here that neither of them showed. I was wondering if maybe I didn't see it since I wasn't paying full attention to it, but seeing this, I understand that it all depends on the choices made by the person playing.
Honestly it's one of the things I dislike about this series. I'm not one to play the same story based game over and over, but if you don't do that here AND probably use a cheat sheet, you will miss huge chunks of the story.
I have always pictured The Curator as Death. As he says several times: "I’m not here to help, just take into record what you are doing" Essentially he’s just there to see if people is going to die or not based on actions we make in the games. Maybe this is his way to give us the power of life and death. He wrote a fictional story and wants us to complete it by making decisions. If you look closely enough when you are playing these games then you can actually see him several times in the background. This indicates that these games/story’s are probably not real and we’re just being tested. There’s so much we know about the story’s of these games but we know nothing about The Curator and he probably wants it to stay that way. We will see in time tho. Sorry for the long comment but I needed to rant a bit lol. Hopefully I have open some eyes to what he could possibly be and we could theorize further. Great video as always Harry!
@@VoltiXHD2 you not wrong and room keep meeting him is between of life and death, that why the doors got hit and story's he tell us, to see we are keep calm under pressure and see how we choose to live or die, that why he always keep a sad and unreadable face to see how we respond to the characters death.
I'm almost certain The Curator is the personification of Death, there's too many hints that he is that line up without much room for doubt, what I'm curious about is who the player is? I assume God as we do have the power to "interfere" and give characters in the stories/real world the strength to survive or not, but that almost seems too easy especially since one of their future releases by the title (O'Death) is probably going to revolve around the mystery of who he is. Maybe we're another entity that Death, tired of being an observer, is trying to empower with the abilities of God that he can control & thus have more of an influence on the world? Which would be bad lol He's the best character in these games to me. There's genuine intrigue to him, dunno if he's a good guy, bad guy or impartial as he says? It does feel like this is gunna crescendo at some point though & we'll have to make a choice of whether to trust him or not.
@@HHHBFResurrected Well seeing as the Curator is the personification of Death, maybe us the player is the personification of Life. The player is the always the one that attempts to lead our bands of characters out of there deadly situations alive.
My personal theory: The Curator is Death. We, the player and his “visitor”, are Destiny. Destiny can sway the events of the story based on how certain characters have a different destiny with their actions. Death is just there to record and see it. The one at the door I’m not positive of, but I think it might be Fate. Fate has no “sway”. There is one path, one story. I believe that Destiny, Death, and Fate must all battle for the outcome of one of the upcoming games/seasons.
I felt like the Curator is Death too. He's, as he says, always watching but he can't interfere. The theme song of the series begins with 'Oh, Death', which could of course also refer to the death of the characters. The thing that stands out the most to me is the way the Curator always storms in. They're talking about Death and there he is.
Just a disclaimer for viewers: The H. H. Holmes section of this video is the fake H. H. Holmes, i.e. the popular media portrayal that grew over many years of questionable new coverage and not the guy whose only confirmed kills were 9 total: family members, a friend and his family and claimed in court nearly 30, many of which were confirmed alive at that time. The real serial killer also never sold the corpse of a victim to medicine, those were from grave robbing. Neither was his hotel a murder castle, actually it was kind of pathetic, just the top floors above the apothecary.
@@OGZelda626 To be brief, a lot of it is sensationalism that was created by the press when Holmes alive and by now most people do not realize is not fact. There is no proof Holmes had a "murder castle." Any hidden rooms within the hotel he owned were for hiding stolen furniture and, as OP pointed out, anything he might have sold to medicine was from grave robbing. As for the murder count, Holmes CLAIMED to had killed 27 people, but this was an obvious lie on his part because some of the people he claimed to have killed were actually alive at the time (in other words, he was acting like your typical serial killer who wanted attention and taking advantage of the attention being given to him). Holmes victims were also notably people he KNEW, not absolute strangers.
this isnt true, his hotel was weird. "There were hinged walls and false partitions. Some rooms had five doors and others had none. Secret, airless chambers were found underneath floorboards - and iron plate-lined walls appeared to stifle all sound." you can easily fact check that
Harry, you should do a synopsis of the complete season. Provide a plot summary of each of the stories as well as any potential themes or threads that are weaved throughout each of the games.
Items of Note about Curator 1. The Terrain (the cliffs/ water) is congruent with Curator's Island. 2. The raven feather that fell to the floor in the beginning. 3. When the driver removed the lint/ string from the jacket cuff. Curator has removed debris from his shirt cuff in the same fashion. 4. Curator has the same collection or memorabilia fetish. Side Notes 1. Every group invited thrusts the hotel closer to being debuted on 11/ 17. 2. Every game in the series has had 5 main people or characters that can be killed.
@Luious Y there are 5 deaths oddly enough the brother is the only one that cannot be affected by our decisions in the house fire. The way and if the death happens is inevitable. Mary's brother's death happened from atop the bell tower in 1692, a date I am not positive. a confrontation between him and the priest. The rest die from our efforts of intervention. That would be 5 in the trials.
This game had its typical serial killer gimmicks of the killer being immortal and teleporting very often, but I did not let that bother me a lot and found the story very intriguing and much more detailed than the previous stories. It was fun figuring the backstory out while playing through the game.
Yeah some people are saying that is evidence of there being two killers. I respect that but I don’t buy it. I think they’re paying homage to the ‘unkillable serial killer’ trope. Vorhees and Myers did the same thing in seemingly teleporting about
@@GamingHarryYT Exactly, and I dont really mind that. Making an intimidating serial killer is pretty hard without these. Though I do think the last scene was pretty stupid. Even if I accept he survived the boat, its hard to believe that he arranged another hotel right the next day and also managed to get another group in it.
The fact that he didn't die really felt like typical horror movies with serial killers like Halloween where the killer is immortal. The game was kinda more scary than the others (in my opinion) because of this constant presence. Even if the killer is kinda blind sometimes x)
As someone that is a mortician, it’s hilarious how misinformed people are about formaldehyde. First, it’s a gas not a liquid, so after a period of time of being in an open container like a bathtub, all of the formaldehyde would gas off. Second, formaldehyde does not preserve you forever. It’s strong enough to preserve tissue long enough for a funeral, but it is physically impossible to preserve every inch of tissue of the human body. It doesn’t prevent flies or maggots or decomposition either. Edit: wanted to add on that it’s as funny as the lack of research that went into mortuary assistant
Formaldehyde can be diluted into a liquid thats probably what’s in the game and it can also if strong enough causes precipitation of of proteins which results in cell death so in theory it can prevent maggots and the eggs of flies from surviving probably not the flies itself as they’d be able to just go away from it but I’d agree with on the fact that all of this in the game is very far fetched but I liked the idea nonetheless 😂
You said it yourself. "Try" to overwhelm. In true horrific events, there's no "trying". You do what you need to do to secure survival, be it consciously or subconsciously. Those 4 have no real means to damage an armed and smart killer without them being killed or fatally injured so the only thing they can do is run away. If you are in their shoes and you think like that, you will be the first to be killed and most probably the ONLY one to be killed.
Minor Curator theory -- the Curator is the Ferryman. His rules are that he cannot personally intervene. I'm unsure as to why the player can, but that's a theory for another day. Throughout the series, we're tasked with collecting certain items for previews of what could happen, as well as him allotting us the opportunities for 'hints'. However, this final addition he tasks us with a request he's never made before. He offers reward for the Ferryman's tokens. This might suggest that ( like the tarot cards held a personal connection previously ) these have more of a connection to the Curator than the player might at first glance think. At the end, it shows names crossed off a list on a page in front of him. First is H.H. Holmes ( and his given name ). The second is Munday, which is crossed out. However, his door is accosted before he can cross out Du'met's. While it might be as suggested, that this is a response to his 'failure' to have more people die in the anthology, I would offer this suggestion instead. The loud bang at the door was both a reminder and a threat -- the Curator is NOT to intervene -- meaning he's not permitted to cross out the alias ( and thus end his life ). The Curator is shown visibly displeased at the end, but is he displeased that so little have died during the series... or that Du'met survived, and he's powerless to put an end to the piles of work the Devil in Him continues to provide?
I think you're right on the money with your theory, but I think the Curator allowed Du'Met to live and that's why his door was accosted. I think he wants to intervene, but the higher-ups are against that.
Fun fact: the Butterfly Effect Podcast channel did some speculation about the release date of this game after the Tom Heaton interview/spa gameplay video dropped. It turns out that Nov 17th, 1895 was the day Holmes was arrested, and also one of the channel moderators’ birthdays. Games usually release on Fridays, like movies, so more people can experience them. So, they allowed one day leeway time; they were spot on for the release date.
idk if you've seen The Girl From Nowhere but it follows a girl who is basically a judge who eggs on ordinary people with such dark and deadly desires. She actually gets to sort of "control" the situation without actually making people do the bad acts herself. She kinda weeds the darkness out into the open for proper analysis and then these people are punished (either dying horribly or just suffering for life). The Curator reminds me of the girl. But he actually can't do anything and can only sit there and hold his tongue while he watches us make a decision. He has been pretty annoyed with players on a few occasions and has shown resentment towards certain choices.
Thank you for this video, Harry. I appreciated the little details in this game. Like the check in/out log book, immediately you could tell the handwriting under the check out date was always different than the signatures and check in date, but the check out date handwriting always matched, so obviously those people weren't checking out. What I can't figure out is if this is suppose to have supernatural elements. Because of the little details that were put in the game, I can't accept that anything is coincidence. Holmes' birth name was Herman Webster Mudgett; Munday's full name was Hector Waylon Munday. Both have the initials HWM. Did the creators of this game do that to hint that Hector is the reincarnation of Holmes? And, during one scene where Munday falls off the roof, after a minute he gets back up like nothing happened, not even a limp, not to mention how he survived that last confrontation on the boat. The game is called The Devil In Me, maybe Munday does have the devil in him, making him invulnerable? I know it's just a video game, not to be taken so seriously, but it's a story being told, too.
Wow...thank you. I like comic with like backstories and everything or like make up scenarios of whatever a games protagonist did after the game was over or before it started...(happens most I dont feel like completely satisfied with tthe characters story as it's revealed thru progression in the game... or somethin lol...and YES like you said it is just a game...BUT should it not be EVERY developers hope that the players playing their game feels completely merged into the game and it's environment. (Well the ones that's not just rushing a title for cash lf course). But I think it's awesome ya put thought into it. Certainly entertained me the 2 or 3 mins I was reading it....
Good to see the Phantom of the Opera still keeping his skills sharp after all these years 😂 Also, having watched the whole video I have to say that Connie the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is clearly the best character and should definitely have a central role going forward. Staffies really are the best of dogs.
My first play through, I got 42 out of 50 secrets. They are mind boggling and fascinating, which is why I love how your videos compile and lay out all the facts and plot threads. Bravo and much love, Harry.
It's been speculated that H.H Holmes was Jack the Ripper, which I support, he was in London during the time frame when the murders were committed and they stopped around the time he left. I've also learned that he matched the descriptions given by eye witnesses, thought eye witnesses have been known to be unreliable at times. I think it's possible he was the Ripper but I also accept the possibility he wasn't.
He was likely not seeing as, most of the H.H Holmes commonly accepted story is fabricated by rumors and embellishments caused by a novel written on him in the 90s. He was actually a con artist who murdered people to cover up his schemes, the hotel while it had secret rooms, never actually had trap doors, death traps, a furnace for body disposal, or shifting walls, or dead end stair cases, or bricked up door ways. The actual H.H Holmes was far less exciting then the mythical character pop culture knows, he did confess to the 27 murders but only got convicted for one.
I also did research on Mr.Ripper, apparently there was speculation that he was a former barber. The reason I bring this up is because H. H Holmes used a straight razor on his first victim, which is a woman.
honestly of the 4, the devil in me was my favorite. I think it was because it was more "real" no ghosts, no supernatural thing chasing you, just a man. It had me immersed my entire play through. Loved the details in this vid and how you showed both outcomes in certain situations, some things i never saw before!
It was definitely supernatural. Like how when i trapped him in between 2 walls and he just walked through it and appeared behind jamie to chase her again. Or when i kicked him down a ledge and he just stands up like nothing happens
I would have liked it more if there was a big twist like I was expecting. I think as cliche as the twist was little hope was my favourite, and house of ashes my least favourite.
For people thinking he might be reincarnation of Holmes because Holmes birth name and munday's full names are similar : i think this is just devs trying to tell us that no matter what, there always would be a devil who is lurking in the dark waiting for a chance to act. According to me, even the last scene in which the killer stayed alive despite being struck by an anchor, was an implication that even tho we were able to kill one killer, the other will show up. Cuz this is just how world works. There are so many bad people in this world not just one. I know this kills the drama behind existence of "multiple killers" so don't take my comment seriously lmao I also like other theories about killers, like the guy, rayn, who killed his sister in the saw test might be helping munday. Cuz Munday saw him as the perfect candidate to assist him in the whole murder spree since he spared himself not his sister.
Great job, I liked all 4 of the chapters of the Dark Pictures Anthology, but this last one was a step above the others, serial killers do in fact sent shivers down my spine.
The story of HH Holmes is so morbidly fascinating. I wrote a paper for my freshman college English (or History) class about the case years ago. I used Devil in the White City as one of my source materials.
Not really since it’s almost entirely fabricated. There was no proof of torture chambers, trapdoors or anything like that, most of his “victims” were still alive lol. It’s more likely he was just a con artist who killed whoever caught him, then in an act of desperation, blew his confession out of proportion to make himself have a legacy
Supermassive has drawn inspiration from the oldest horror classics and amalgamated them. Keeping that in mind, I think The Devil In Me is incorporating some details from the Phantom of the Opera (classic Lon Chaney film and musical adaptation). The mask, the animatronics, that labyrinth of a hotel filled with traps, accessing it by crossing a lake obscured by swirling mist. Might not be the case, but just a few things I've noticed.
@@VainSick I know that, but the theatre where the PotO takes place is also filled with secret pathways and traps to capture/torture intruders. Not stating it "matter of factly", just saying that's what I noticed.
Maybe someone in early development Googled, "Who is the most famous Holmes in the world?" _Seriously._ Rupert Holmes might have been quite the inspiration.
Before I realised Munday was actively trying to keep Kate alive so he could use her to blackmail Mark into making the call and continuing the cycle, Kate's impenetrable plot armour had me climbing the walls during my darkest timeline run. She always lived, no matter how many stupid decisions I made or how badly I failed her QTEs. I even had a bug where the screwdriver, which I had made a point of not giving her, magically appeared in her possession after The Curator's intermission, saving her in the glass room. I was starting to suspect that Supermassive had a crush on Jesse Buckley and didn't want to kill her character. At that point it had become a personal goal to kill Kate and not just because it was the goal of the run. Finally, I decided not to make the call when the time came. If I could say one thing to Supermassive, it would be this: "Don't make your players roll for outcomes you are not prepared to follow through on and avoid plunging your characters into pearl unless you are willing to follow through with the failstate". I'm not wrong here am I? In a game like the Dark Pictures Anthology, having a character who is impossible to kill instead kills any and all tension in a scene. A finale-only death worked with Sam in Until Dawn because she only appeared in a handful of scenes, but since Kate is arguably The Devil In Me's main character, her plot armour is much more obvious.
The Quarry suffered the same shortcomings with a good chunk of its characters. The current generation of games don’t feel as open to possibilities as Until Dawn did. Deaths seem almost fixed to the narrative rather than oopsies that can occur to derail it.
@@Cha_Cha_Chai You make an excellent point, as the games have gotten longer the branching paths do seem more restrictive than previous games, with fixed points in the narrative the story crisscrosses like checkpoints that reign in the feeling of choice. Supermassive did manage to keep the suspense and tension surrounding the entire group in Little Hope. How the group dynamics and narrative were handled made it feel natural and the danger feel balanced, to the point where you wouldn't notice until it was pointed out that Andrew couldn't die before the finale. Throughout that game, Supermassive expertly positioned Andrew near but never directly in the path of the danger; he was always our avatar assisting others or on the periphery of danger, never the target of the pearl as Kate becomes repeatedly throughout the events of this game.
If I’m going to be honest, I had the thought that Jamie was the one he was actively trying to keep alive . Because she talks about death a lot, and is pretty much morbid. I also thought Jamie was in on it because the part where you are in the silver cash area with Erin and Jamie’s voice comes out of the corpse. There’s no reason for me to believe that was really Jamie because we had just seen Jamie in a freezer.
Hell itts ok. I saw on a playthrough erin magically appear in the control room AFTER she had been killed..... This game was clearly and i mean clearly rushed
My theory on the last scene is that the curator didn't scratch off/killed dumet. He is always going on about how he cannot interfer or change the story. But by keeping him alive he did just that. And why would he kill him? He's knocking up a good kill streak keeping him busying...providing the curator is actually death as some believe.
This was an amazing explanation video! I watched some people play the game but because of their game play, I had absolutely no idea what the story/lore was. I'm so happy I found this to explain since I was very confused. Very well done!
The amount of work that must have gone into this video is amazing, especially considering the multiple options. I played this recently and missed it entirely! Very interesting story. Thank you!
After playing it, the game itself was ok, but the amount of glitches was absolutely incredible. Pathfinding would break, Mark's camera would start floating inside of his head if I used it im certain scenarios, and I also had to reset the game at one point because I got off a platform the wrong way and got stuck in a pile of trash.
I think the Curator is perhaps is a ferryman like Charon in Greek mythology. Ferrying people between the land of the living & the death. After all he asks us to collect obols & he's acting as a mere observer to our choices. However, he is occidentally asking us if we want tips & perhaps the power he serves is annoyed that he's indirectly helping or offering us tips when all he's supposed to do is observe not interfere. I have 3 ideas as to why he is doing this: 1. He's job is to test humanity & it's will to survive through the player finishing his fictional stories. 2. He is testing us through these fictional stories to determine if we are good enough to take his place as the Curator or become a higher power. 3. He's acting a judge as we are dead & these stories are a test to determine if we should be allowed to continue to live or pass on to the land of the dead
I really like these theories. Another theory to add just on the spot. What if the curator is testing us to take over the role of death, or a higher up, and using these tests to determine if we can handle it. When the curator essentially let's du met live and the other force gets angry, maybe it's the other force realizing something is off and going on, and this is the curators way of either taking control and sending the message that death is replaceable, or that the Curator, although scared and hesitant, is a messenger of change. Heck, maybe the curator is training us to take over for him so that he may become death himself, so he can make the choices, and letting dy met live is him taking a stand against death as a taunt.
This essay is amazing. I saw many people always comparing anything Supermassive Games has released to Until Dawn even to this day, always stating Until Dawn was better in many aspect. I guess some of them are, but you can't hide the fact they have stepped their game over the years. Maybe people these day don't have the attention span and only care about surface level intricacies, which is why these kind of essays is always a welcome addition.
The thing is, I REALLY don’t like it when people compare the DPA to Until Dawn. Until Dawn is a AAA title funded by Sony with all-Star actors, DPA are more experimental, less funded games that usually have one star. These games are experiments, not Supermassive trying to replicate the success of UD. If you want a game to compare to UD, look at the Quarry.
Worth noting that in reality there's no evidence that HH Holmes had poison gas traps in his hotel. He had confusing room layouts and secret doors, but not necessarily traps of any kind. A lot of that seems to be the exaggeration of a few journalists when the story broke, and has since become legend. The real reason Holmes requested he be buried deeper and covered with cement is not because he was so dangerous, but because he feared people digging up his body and desecrating it. His final words to the court were not a warning, but a plea. A lot of artistic license was taken by journalists after this case hit the streets. The reality of many notorious serial killers is far more lackluster than the legends claim. The cliche of the hyper intelligent and well-poised serial killer like Hannibal Lecter is just not very realistic. Check out the truth behind the Son of Sam to find one of the most notorious cases of people taking the legend and running with it to extremes, while the real man was a sad pathetic loser.
I have studied a tiny bit of forensics in post-secondary and one of the topics I remember is about handwriting. Everybody has unique handwriting though deciphering it is quite difficult. But if you look at writing repeatedly, you will definitely see some similarities. From the hotel logbook. You can definitely tell the one signing out is the same person. However, this can be discarded as simply the owner being the one who writes the sign-out (but if that's the case, then they should be the one writing the sign-in as well).
I work in a museum as a front office, the sign-in has to be written by the guests, but oftentimes I'm the one who writes the sign-out for the guests when they forget about it. I'm not sure if this is allowed in a hotel tho.
@@caniwasteallyourtimeherein9728 that's very interesting. I work as security and when a guest arrives, we all put it into a computer. So, no handwriting here for me.
I'm not sure Du'Met was an alias. I'm pretty sure it's literally impossible for one man to have done everything/been everywhere (including customising all those mannequins of the crew while also studying them and tormenting them simultaneously - inside one afternoon/night?) and at the very end when the Custodian is crossing out names... Munday's is crossed out (died in the motorboat incident) but Du'Met - the man who picked up the washed up mask - remains.
I feel like the stories in the whole collection of dark pictures anthology games could have been fleshed out a lot better starting from the very first of the series on man of Medan whose ending was just insulting. I just feel a lot of times plot twists are either not working because they're too dumb or simplistic. To even my own surprise I'd say until dawn the game that started this whole anthology although not being part of it to this day had the best story. Very simple and generic premise but very well executed with strong moments, good mystery vibes and atmosphere and some reveals that really hit the spot.
Damn, I love Lore and Order. Thank you, Harry, I enjoy this series very much. By the way, I got the Mark and Kate ending right on my first playthrough.
I would have preferred if the game focused more on the actual hh Holmes as the villain. I know these games have all been modern focused but I had just listened to the last podcast on the left episodes about Holmes prior to purchase. The intro of the game was more unsettling than its entirety.
Watched this after watching Jacksepticeye’s walkthrough and it was interesting to see how different the story is when you compiled everything in order! Thanks for your thorough research :)
Okay, crazy theory, but I think there were two serial killers on the island. The time stamps in the game contradict because Du'met can't be in two places at once. I think Hector found the serial killer that was "learning on the job" and realized this guy's ability to make animatronics would help him with his issue with bringing his mom back. So, they start working together! Hector fakes his death, the other guy disappears, and they go into the hotel business. I'm probably wrong, but I thought it made sense with the killer picking up the mask know the end and that the Curator didn't scratch out Dumet's name at the end. What do you guys think?
I know these types of choose your own adventure type games can be tough to tell a consistent story, but I felt numbers times through this one that the characters would say things that didn’t apply to my story with them. Or story scenarios just got skipped over. I found it more in this game then any of the other and even The Quarry.
I have been waiting soo long for you to make this video! I love the atmosphere in each of you’re videos they are so great. And a bit spooky, but still great. Like a scary documentary.
Great video, the lore in this game was pretty interesting, but since I watched someone else play it in co-op, I missed a good chunk of it that the other player found (or was supposed to find), so I really needed this summary lol
I think the thing about the curator maybe that he too is a prisoner of sorts. He tells tales of survival, horror and terror to save his own skin. Its a take on the Arabian Nights or sorts.
I actually do find these games to be Better than a lot of Movies. Unlike a lot of films they are actually using unique and different ideas. Hollywood could take a lesson or 2 from these Video game writers.
42:00 you forgot to mention how Mrs Morello died, perhaps people would like to know? She is the crying animatronic corpse found in the room with the dog bowl
This video is amazing. My playthrough of the Devil in Me left a LOT of questions and holes. So many that I thought this game was downright the weakest in the Anthology because nothing made sense! Now, with the full picture, I can see how well thought out the story really was! I just wish it could be that cohesive no matter how you played. Kate's 'emotion rock' or whatever, was still pretty random, tho
Love the detail by the checking out that it is all the same handwriting unlike the checking in. Neat detail that it wasn’t the original person who did it
So nice, I watched it twice before I commented. You really did your research into the secret ending [Mark is "ferry man" to save Kate.] conditions (not quite the same as killing all five during the game, although the outcome is ultimately the same), and both standard and Curator's cut versions of key moments in the narrative. There are tons of things to find, well paced fake-out clues, achievements to get for different characters (for certain deaths or uncovering certain clues), and the game feels expansive while still being in a highly controlled setting. All markers of a great game. Super Massive promised a lot with this game, and unlike The Quarry earlier this year, it surely delivered on the experience being intriguing, scary, and fun from start to finish. Don't get me wrong, The Quarry still feels like a spiritual successor to Until Dawn, but The Devil in Me is taking notes from all the games before it, including the Quarry, and covering all of its bases. The things that needed improving were, and the things DPA is known for that people love were expanded upon and made to or beyond their usual standard of quality.
If there three season, of this game series, then they need to be REALLY clever on getting people interested in the story and make some of the characters a bit likeable too, without being a jerk. And, that’s if the story itself is base on something that not too many people know about on via history.
i'm a bit late, but thank you for doing a video on the devil in me! i'm hyperfixated on the game rn, and it makes me happy when people cover it on youtube :D
I’ve said for a few games now that The Curator is actually Death. The transposed skull in House of Ashes was a little on the nose in making this point, but I first started thinking this in Little Hope. If you accept a hint and he quotes Shakespeare he’ll say “I met him once, you know. I meet everyone… once”. Since then, I’ve been working to the idea that he is death itself, a better dressed grim reaper. He does have a few things in common with Red Dead Redemption’s Strange Man too, which also helps the theory.
I just commented this on the House of Ashes video as well, but the newspaper that talks about Bush has a headline about Sherman being executed. Now I want to see how many other connections can be made between the games.
Man of medan:The shirt that says salem direct reference to little hope because salem/and little hope is about witch craft. Little hope: i forget exactly what it is,but something you find relates to army or vampires which house of ashes is about and the premonition of The girl falling off the rope. House of Ashes: You find the animatronic with the cig locked in a cell here first,(i honestly thought it was a reference to until dawn where the construction worker is a wendigo) then the premonition of charlie on fire. Devil in me:When using kate before glass trap, when finding the fileson the tables theres a magazine about mars and space. Then the premonition of the people in space.
Seems like teaser is suggesting that there's an alien virus or something else transforming the cast into monsters. Sounds fun. Reminds me of this mediocre movie called The Last Days On Mars.
Idk why but I was missing certain scenes. Like the instructions for Erin - never had that scene. Or Kate hitting open the door with the candlestick. Maybe it's because of some choices I made, because everyone was alive and in positive relationships. Weird.
I love that they went with this story, i got into jack the ripper lore years ago and always found it fascinating when H.H holmes came into picture.. Leading up in the story about him itself and his murder hotel. I thought that there was going to be a movie about it at some point but haven't really seen anything so far.
There is a movie about H.H Holmes its called the devil in the white city, but only released on streaming service Hulu iirc. However the story of H.H Holmes irl isn’t actually at all like how pop culture portrays it
Has anyone ever been that scared for their lives? Most people don't have nice sensible thoughts and planning skills. Sometimes dumb horror mistakes, are just that. stupid but sometimes it's more plausible than people realize.
It's incredible how the "explained" part that follows after the recap of an incredibly straightforward murder-escape-room plot boils down to "it was a really smart serial killer". Even the twist of his identity is simply "he got someone else to invite his victims"; that's it. The story would've been really interesting, if it was actually woven into the plot if the game.
I've always had this theory that the curator is telling the story of the dark pictures games to someone we don't see sense it's a first person viewpoint but after this game it clear that my theory might be true
I’ve legit watched this one video so many times I feel like it’s concerning, but the story and the inspiration behind the game is so interesting and intriguing I wanna play this myself.

Hey, the HH.Holmes recap you did contains a tiny error - he was suspected for the death of Mr. Holton but Mrs. Holton survived well passed Holmes's execution, living in the stores area
Thoughts....not actually sure if both Holtons lived passed Holmes' execution but I know for sure Mrs. Holton survived and was the person Holmes bought a pharmacy from as she was the owner and doctor

Do you have the Curators Cut... and if you do, does it show the killers face, because at the end with the boat, they get the mask off.
The ending if you do everything well, makes me wonder if you can kill Du'Met.

I can guarantee that book was from DEATH NOTE...
@@pyrox4549 I don’t think it’s the “Actual” death note. Good idea, but I definitely would say, there is something more at play.
That’s very interesting since we can tell a change once he does that, the strange noise like the house is angry at him for doing it
And it also explains how Munday is alive.
The Curator is DEATH. Notice he appears when someone dies
Dude you make a good point. Because how else are his teeth left at the fire. It makes sense why he never talked.
no he actually fake his dental records by swapping his an the fake corpses dental record when he broke into th police station.
This is a really good theory
That makes so much sense! I like this theory.
That's about exactly right but same hotel... they're sentimental
it also explains despite having full control over the place, how Du'Met could just almost seamlessly teleport - especially if you get pushed off the roof as Jane - there is no way he got down there that fast without a partner
Or with ironmouse and connor their game literally bugs to make them not able to save some people
Honestly it's one of the things I dislike about this series.
Which would be bad lol
He's the best character in these games to me.
That and he sometimes breaks the rule and does help.
The Twist might be he locks for a replacement
My personal theory: The Curator is Death. We, the player and his “visitor”, are Destiny. Destiny can sway the events of the story based on how certain characters have a different destiny with their actions. Death is just there to record and see it. The one at the door I’m not positive of, but I think it might be Fate. Fate has no “sway”. There is one path, one story. I believe that Destiny, Death, and Fate must all battle for the outcome of one of the upcoming games/seasons.
That... Does Sound Kind of romantic, doesnt it? Idk, something about the way you explained it made my brain tingle
there is no Fate. only Death, Destiny, Dream, Desire, Despair, Destruction and Delirium.
So you're saying fate was knocking at the door?
Poetic.
Oh and the Curator also mentions he’ll handle the paperwork in regards to the dead characters
Yes, I'm so glad someone wrote it here, thank you! This part of the video is kind of misleading.
Oh so those parts aren’t real, because this sounded like James March from American horror story literally the exact same but with different names
Also, Holmes requested his body be covered in cement first because he was afraid of someone grave digging him the same way he did others.
That'd be cool
YES!!
Oooh, this needs more upvotes! He could do one of those "Entire Story...for Now!" vids he does, love the longform content ❤
Items of Note about Curator
Side Notes
1. Every group invited thrusts the hotel closer to being debuted on 11/ 17.
2. Every game in the series has had 5 main people or characters that can be killed.
Not the salem trial one though, that one was a spoiler not 5 people.
This game is awesome tho
So we gonna ignore that it could be the devil? If it is then it makes sense that it can’t die
@@ThatOneFurthat’s what I’m thinking. The devil is literally in him and he can’t die
In the beginning of house of ashes you can find a newspaper with a section titled Manny Sherman executed kinda cool how it ties in
And in Man of Medan, you get a newspaper talking about the missing archeologists in House of Ashes.
Exactly why they couldn't try to overwhelm the killer when they were 4 vs 1 is beyond me, but still...
You have no weapon, no environment advantages, against a stronger and smarter experienced killer, you wanna fight him?
So I'm guessing in that scenario you'd be the first to step up potentially sacrificing yourself for everyone else?
Fear literally paralyzes you
You said it yourself.
@@ssjswisher8290 I was thinking the exact same thing.
Granthem Du'Met is also an anagram of Herman Mudgett, which is a nice (apparently subtle, since I haven't seen anyone mention it) touch.
He is DEATH. Notice how he secretly appear in the background when someone is about to die and he appears when someone dies
He is either a depiction of death which I am leaning on or yes Charon the ferryman of the greek underworld.
In Little Hope he even specifically emphasizes the word ferryman in one of his quotes.
I think you're right on the money with your theory, but I think the Curator allowed Du'Met to live and that's why his door was accosted. I think he wants to intervene, but the higher-ups are against that.
That's a bloody good theory
Honestly that’s a good theory tbh
I love girl from nowhere, literally such an amazing show and your theory makes sense
Hmm, yeah I think they’re paying homage to the whole, unkillable antagonist trope. Much like Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers
Another comment listed a theory that the brother didn't die when they put the siblings against each other so he became an accomplice.
It’s most likely he wasn’t since there is evidence that a cop was. Also this theory seems forced tbh
However I must say the Mythological H.H Holmes is far more interesting
@@VainSick To add to that: a lot of the murders he confessed were found to not be true because... well... the 'victims' were alive and well.
I also did research on Mr.Ripper, apparently there was speculation that he was a former barber.
The reason I bring this up is because H. H Holmes used a straight razor on his first victim, which is a woman.

I know this kills the drama behind existence of "multiple killers" so don't take my comment seriously lmao
I also like other theories about killers, like the guy, rayn, who killed his sister in the saw test might be helping munday. Cuz Munday saw him as the perfect candidate to assist him in the whole murder spree since he spared himself not his sister.
Great job, I liked all 4 of the chapters of the Dark Pictures Anthology, but this last one was a step above the others, serial killers do in fact sent shivers down my spine.
the mocap, general animation and voice overs were not as good as in the previous instalments though
The mocap looks to be the same quality as the other games to me.
It’s more likely he was just a con artist who killed whoever caught him, then in an act of desperation, blew his confession out of proportion to make himself have a legacy
using the screwdriver against the pressure of the glass was brilliant
Supermassive has drawn inspiration from the oldest horror classics and amalgamated them. Keeping that in mind, I think The Devil In Me is incorporating some details from the Phantom of the Opera (classic Lon Chaney film and musical adaptation). The mask, the animatronics, that labyrinth of a hotel filled with traps, accessing it by crossing a lake obscured by swirling mist. Might not be the case, but just a few things I've noticed.
I felt the mask and the misty water were very Phantom too!
The hotel is based off the Fictionalized embellishment of the real H.H Holmes story.

The streamer/playthrough I watched got Erin syringed in the eye & got Kate sandwiched...Fortunately no story breaking glitches & they stayed dead
I wonder if instead of Charon, he’s Thanatos
The facts that they save the dog was like so amazing
Same. I also watched Jacksepticeye's walkthrough & watched this video afterwards.
I know that this reply is 10 months late lol, but I also did the same thing a while back and I completely agree with your statement!
house of ashes is still the best...
i love the curator bits, its so mysterious and well rendered.
The killer making elaborate architectural plans and constructing full FNAF animatronics but outsourcing his olde timey cosplay is cracking me up
Great video, the lore in this game was pretty interesting, but since I watched someone else play it in co-op, I missed a good chunk of it that the other player found (or was supposed to find), so I really needed this summary lol
Boy did I fuck up everything by killing Erin early in this game. It makes a lot more sense with her surviving longer.
this dark anthology series of games reminds me of those "choose your adventure" books from back in the 90s.
Sweet now I can understand the story of this game so thank you
The secrets were understanding and I figured out
This video is amazing.
That limousine was rendered and modeled perfectly
Finally caught an early upload. Been waiting for sooo long for a new Lore & Order video, keep it up man
Love the detail by the checking out that it is all the same handwriting unlike the checking in. Neat detail that it wasn’t the original person who did it
Can I just say great job with the editing, the clips with the police sound clips are amazingly done
Those are from the game. I doubt Harry would have the time to do editing *that* perfectly - it would take weeks!
I was lookin forward to this! Havent played the game yet..BUT wanted to hear the story from you. Keep up
The good work💪🏾💪🏾
I liked Devil In Me, I just wished that "season one finale" actually meant something big.
Thank you Harry! Your video essays are my favorite to watch!
Don't know if anyone else noticed but the plaque memorizing the shipwreck near the island is also the same name as the spaceship in the next game.
I’ve been waiting for this one 👀. Thanks for the video
If there three season, of this game series, then they need to be REALLY clever on getting people interested in the story and make some of the characters a bit likeable too, without being a jerk. And, that’s if the story itself is base on something that not too many people know about on via history.
Yea I’ve been waiting for this one! I loved this game and finished it a couple days ago. Keep up the great work!
i'm a bit late, but thank you for doing a video on the devil in me! i'm hyperfixated on the game rn, and it makes me happy when people cover it on youtube :D
You had me at "Lore and Order"
Ever since I finished the game I was WAITING for you video ! You always have the best plot explanations
They really did a good job of creating a memorable villain. Get ready for all the spin off games
Easily my favorite antagonist from the anthology so far. It's even cooler he survives in the end.
I’m honestly thrilled to see what Directive 8020 will have in store :)
Seems like teaser is suggesting that there's an alien virus or something else transforming the cast into monsters. Sounds fun. Reminds me of this mediocre movie called The Last Days On Mars.
“Cereal killer like Michael Myers” HHH being a real cereal killer
Cereal killer 😭😭😭
I really enjoyed this one. House of Ashes is still my #1 but this one has become my second favorite.
Dark Pictures honestly create better stories when a supernatural force is used. Until Dawn, The Quarry and House of Ashes are their best.
Agree pretty much to be honest. Looking forward to seeing where things go in the future.
I literally gasped when I saw that u had a new long video 😌🍿🍿
“Haitch haitch holmes”😂 love the videos keep err up
Yay now I can finally get to see what this game was all about
The fact that they have a game about it inspired by HH Holmes makes me happy asf
Same
This basically ESCAPE ROOM meets SAW in a restaurant and their waiter is FNF
Idk why but I was missing certain scenes. Like the instructions for Erin - never had that scene. Or Kate hitting open the door with the candlestick. Maybe it's because of some choices I made, because everyone was alive and in positive relationships. Weird.
They're in the Curators Cut Version! I always play both modes because you get a better idea of what's happening
@@GamingHarryYT ohhh, now it makes sense! I didn't know it had different game modes lol. Guess I've been sleeping under a rock. Thanks for info :)
Fun fact: rearrange the letters in Herman Mudgett and you get Granthem Du'Met.
I think it was mentioned ingame. But yeah, a nice detail
Interesting touch with the handwriting for the check out dates all being the same because he checked out for all of them
46:00 I always assumed (especially with the intro theme) that he was supposed to literally be Death.
I've loved all of the dark anthology playthroughs Harry has done, hoping to see a playthrough of this one too at some point!
Try doing a full timeline explained of the dark pictures anthology series since season 1 is all done and getting ready for season 2
Basically: “Oh you want to know about H. H. Holmes? Why don’t you live it!”
Best and most in depth explanation video of the game I have seen yet. Great work as always.
Munday's Rule of 5: *exists*
Group of people that were invited: *brings a 6th person*
Munday: *Sh!t, guess I can't kill them now.*
I was waiting for you to finally drop this video since yesterday. Luckily I’m off today.
