Man, the way the mother delivered the "Your sister? ... I thought we'd moved past that nonsense" immediately made me think "Wait, is the sister not actually real??" So it turned out I was close! That's really good voice acting from whoever played the mother.
Her “sisters” side of the room is an exact mirror image of her own. She probably had a mirror hanging on the far wall, allowing her memories to remain consistent.
I have a degree in Psychology, and while I am not an expert by any means, I would still like to make a quick "correction." Julia is the "real" daughter and Martha is the alt. DID works very similarly to what the game shows. This is why Julia is the core. Alts are usually aware that they are an alt and not the core (and if there is multiple, they are also aware of eachother). However, the core is almost never aware that their are alts and will simply have blackouts when the alt(s) comes out. Martha is shown to have very aware of Julia and made a lot of effort to comunicate with her. We never saw that from Julia. Martha played along with the sister bit as DID is typically developed from childhood trauma and in an effort to protect the core from said trauma. With this in mind, it would make sense that Martha would pretend/go along with the sister act. This further protects the core. Another point proving that Julia is real is that she doesn't fully remember the abuse, but Martha remembers all of it. If Martha was created to take the abuse, then she would remember the abuse in more detail as she wouldn't have the same "black outs" as Julia. The reason Julia thinks that Martha was the "golden child", is because she (Julia) would be abused, black out, and then Martha would come out seemingly fine. She doesn't remember Martha being abused because Martha doesn't WANT her to remember. Martha exists to protect her from as much trauma as possible. This is also why Martha comes out when she kills her mother. With every shot, Martha takes over so Julia doesn't have to live with the memories of killing her mother. It sure as hell ain't perfect, but to her brain, it's better than nothing. Sorry if this is confusing af, DID is a extremely complicated disorder. Hopefully what I wrote makes some sense to someone. Also feel free to correct me if I am wrong about any of this. Edit: I've had a couple of comments that made me realize that my wording paints a different picture than how DID really works. Basically, Julia and Martha are NOT two completely different/separate identities. They are actually two parts of the same whole. The example the commenters used were like a vase for plate breaking. The pieces don't just become separate things, they are still parts of the original item, just separated. Also a quick clarification on my using the word "core." I mean core as in the "normal personality" of the person. Core is the the term I was familiar with and I figured would be the easiest for other to understand. I apologize for all the confusion. I hope this helps!
Remind me of a manga I read where one of the character had 3 different personalities to protect her true self. The 3 alt personality were all aware of each other and know everything that happen. But the core personality has no idea what the other 3 does. This made that manga make a lot more sense now. Thanks!
I'm guessing her mother coming back might've contributed to her alter coming back. As a victim of abuse I can garuntee seeing my abuser is not fun. Even if it was because of the drugs they should've done a slower reintegration to the family or at least kept them apart a bit more.
I agree. The very presence of your abuser, even if they've changed or aren't really a threat anymore for one reason or another, can put stress on a victim. If that stress is hiding a condition as serious as DID... yeah, that is probably exactly why Julia/Martha snaps. The meth pills likely did not help at all, either.
Also if its a mother you lived with for years the trauma bond is rough. You know something is wrong but you still remain by their side. Cause it’s all you know.
Considering the two sides of the room seem to be mirrored, I wonder if that literally is the case with there actually just being a mirror there and Martha treating the reflection of her room as another half of the room made to match the look of the other side.
Oh boy. You would have thought that if the mom was going infertile, she would have treated her only child with the most love instead of blaming and abusing her. Guess everybody reacts differently to stress and trauma. Also, crazy how the Dad only took noticed and action of the abuse after the mom fed the pet dog to his daughter. Abusing her physically totally didn't warrant that for some reason. 🙄

Because in Greece, where I live, and in other politically unstable countries people are vulnerable and are prone to violent influences or impulses. Unfortunately, we hear a lot about domestic violence and murder on the news. And it scares me a lot.
Also I must say, as Italian, that the setting is a masterpiece, there are still many rural villas in the countryside that are almost identical to the villa of Giulia K.
What i take from the resistance scene is that even though that one guy busted her lip that he still shot beside her as if he killed her to trick the other members. You also helped them at some point and said that it was optional and maybe this is the outcome of helping them. That the member let you live because he was the one on the other end of the radio giving you the directives. Maybe lapo being killed was also a hallucination and that member was lapo himself. Have you tried to see what would've happened if you didn't help the resistance?
You know that's something I wondered myself as it is I dont buy the it's all in her head I think there is something else going on and well come on ww2 resistance would want her dead why? Her father? She would be more useful alive
It doesn't matter if you help the resistance or not. I didn't even realize there was a "help the resistance" side quest available (I missed a lot of side quests, to be honest) and the resistance soldier still let me go.
The two beds can also signify their inner world. A lot of DID patients interact with alters in an inner world, and the switching of the beds can be a parallel to the switching alters (who’s in the front)
Love the explanation. Something to know since I have a good understanding of DID: the first personality was likely Martha. Martha chose to be deaf in an effort to protect herself from the abuse. When that wasnt enough, Julia took the abuse, and Martha would front to receive love and affection. Julia was the alter who spent the most time with the nanny. When the mother was well again and came home, there wasnt as much hardship to endure, so Martha fronted more and more. However, she was still deaf, which could symbolize that Martha couldnt cope with every day life well. The goal of DID is to survive and cope: each personality is adept at different things. Maybe Martha knew Julia was stronger, and also had only seen pain, so she decided to do something about it. Martha must have known about Julia's role in the system. Lapo was Julia's boyfriend, but Martha slept with him. Only Martha knew of the pregnancy. When Julia miscarried, she had no idea and just thought it was more blood than usual. Martha decided Julia should become the main personality, and she decided to kill herself for Julia's sake. Alters can decide at any point to disappear, hibernate, or integrate with another alter if they want to. Sometimes, they dont have a choice-another alter could make that decision for them. (someone said core personalities usually dont know theyre alters, but it's important to remember that that isnt always true. Sometimes, a new personality is created that becomes the main personality, and the original personality is aware of the split. Also, they can gain awareness at any time-maybe both Julia and Martha didnt know they were the same person rather than twins for a long time). The real question is: IS Martha ACTUALLY DEAD? I wonder. It seems like Martha fronted during the murders to pull the trigger. It also seemed like Martha was finally Julia's voice, just as Martha promised in the recording. But at the end, when Julia speaks to herself, I wonder if Martha is really gone.
It actually makes more sense like that when you consider her birth name is Martha. Her mother would call for and abuse Martha. So, she needed another name for the core/host.
I feel like Giulia is there to take what is unbearable for Martha. I think they both inhabit the same body. But Giulia is something like her "false self". Similar to what happens with people that have NPD.
Well, you're assuming they're doing DID correctly. Which is not a smart thing to do when it comes to video game and film representations of mental health disorders.
As a person with OSDD (similar to DID but not the same) Julia isn't the core, bc obviously the birth name is Martha, Julia is the alter made from trauma and made to protect Martha, even with DID the core/host can sometimes know of trauma. And in my opinion, the representation of DID was pretty accurate.
i feel like the fact that i watch you & gamersault routinely is proof enough that you should always make the content you want to make rather than worrying about what has been done. youve crossed over a lot in which games you cover, but seeing one never diminishes my experience of the other because you both have such individual delivery 💕 ive been so excited to see you tackle this one!!!
I’m wondering who the funeral was for since Martha was never real, and the one daughter was obviously still alive. Even if she was posing as Martha, there was a body in the casket that everyone acknowledged, and they even had a funeral service. What gets me more is the games predecessor “town of light” has a news clipping found at the beginning of the game about “Giulia’s death” which means someone did die in reality. Even if it wasn’t Giulia. This had me scratching my head.
Remember the funeral didn’t happen, there was none. Because the story is a retelling from Giulia’s pov she only remembers that there was one even though there wasn’t. The part about Giulia’s death in ‘town of light’ probably refers to when she died In the asylum
@@sol15_apparently it did because in a previous game made by the devs (town of light) that takes place in the same asylum giulia was admitted to, you can see a newspaper article announcing the death of giulia, the funeral time, and the surviving family members
This is one of those games where you think you know exactly what is going on the first time you play it. Once you know that there never was any Giulia it makes you understand the entire game different and have a much deeper appreciation for the storytelling and not treating the audience as fools.
Almost as convoluted and melodramatic as the Remothered games. When I watched CJUGames play this, he didn't accomplish the part where Giulia helps out the rebels, so I appreciate that the game had that sidequest and you for including it in the video.
Well, now we need one about Town of Light! Hehe. I really enjoyed that game and love to see when developers create links between games. Such a bombshell. Another great lore and order episode that ties things together nicely.
I awaited this video for so long, thank you so much for making it, I needed it to get the games point fully. I love all of the lore and order videos, but this was just even better for me, thanks once more.
Thanks for explaining because the beginning part where the parents argue bothered me. The father wants to grieve but the mother says that they have another child. I wondered if Martha wasn’t real why would they be playing along after she was dead. Turns out Julia made it up I guess.
probably my fave video from gaming harry yet... i suffered some horrors in my early childhood and developed alters. after years of therapy many of them are dormant or joined together-- however, i remember how confusing and awful it was before i knew what was going on. this game really captures the utter horror of not being able to trust your own memories.
@@dragonking2719 It's not. It's just some zoomer acting autistic for clout on tiktok. Multiple personality disorders doesn't work like that and work more like the game actually.
This game was such a unique experience and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised by the actual story. I had thought this game would be about World War II and that Martha had died from the war somehow. It also hadn't been as supernatural as you would have thought. By the end of it, I was left shocked and disturbed. It also felt a bit nostalgic for me because I really haven't played many psychological horrors since Silent Hill and The Evil Within.
Great video as always! For any camera geeks out there, the camera she's using is a Rolleicord 1 also known as the Art Deco Rollei, made from 1933 to 1936, and is arguably one of the prettiest cameras ever made.
You like horror and cameras, eh? Do you think you could tell me which cameras the various models of the Camera Obscura (from the _Fatal Frame/Project Zero_ series) are based on? I met a guy once who was upholding his father's business of collecting, restoring, and renting out vintage cameras for various local movie & TV productions (he also fixed people's cameras on the side). It was so fascinating to me. And, hilariously... he owned a copy of _Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly._ Dude was anywhere from like 50 to late 60s, I honestly don't remember. But he was cool as hell. I think his name was Lee.
@@Kiss_My_Aspergers Interesting question! I actually need to revisit the Fatal Frame series as I haven't that much knowledge on it (ironic I know for a camera geek). I did look at the various models on the wiki and firstly they definitely modified some of the cameras to fit with the game's aesthetic but overall I can have a guess at what each is based on. In FF1 and IV they seem to be stylized takes on the 4x5 press cameras, like the Crown & Speed Graphic cameras. What I can tell is that the camera in FF1 is using an old lens and shutter on the front standard, as the shutter has a pneumonic shutter which were popular from the 1860s up until I'd guess the 1920s (I could be wrong on that number). In FF2 the camera being used is almost certainly an early model of the Zeiss Ikon Nettar 6x6 folding camera. In FF3 the camera reminds me of an Agfa Record (1952) but without it's central viewfinder. The camera in the movie looks a lot like either a Rolleicord 2 or an early model Voigtlander Brilliant, neither have the stylized waist level viewfinder but the overall front plate looks familiar with those cameras. The camera from Maiden of Black Water seems to take some inspiration from the Voigtlander Vitessa with the open door design for the lens mount, but I'm unsure of the top plate itself. Sounds like you met a pretty cool guy, I would have loved to have seen some of that collection. It's really neat what people have found in collections that were left by family members.
@@nick.reuper Yeah, always wanted to dig up his info and try to contact him again, see if he's still around, but I don't want to be creepy... I just wanna take pics of his collection 😩 Man, you're REALLY good at this stuff. Thanks for answering my question(s)!
Alters refer to the alternate personalities of a person with DID(Dissociative Identity Disorder). Each Alter can have their own memories or all could be intertwined but regardless they are effectively a different person in the same body. Interesting way to tell this story as Alters can end up dying effectively through things like immense stress.
Not personlaities..identities .. like the name of the disorder says. And alters can not die. I can integrate, go dormant, split etc. but that is not really dying.
I really enjoy the videos and how well you present them. I love horror stories and lore, but am way too much of a wuss to play them so they are perfect for me. So please keep the videos coming.
It was a long of time since I watched the game, but I believe what triggered fully Martha to come back was the (possible mental) pregnancy. As the mother was back the fear of being an abusive mom cause the enough stress to makes her dissociate. People that were abuse by theirs parents have the irrational (and justified) fear of ending like them. I don't believe Lapo was real because in the letters it's said he could knew who was who, but Martha only would come out when Julia felt treated, something that shouldn't happen is you are with you love one. I believe while she was helping the military, she developed a crush on whoever received the information and gave that romantic relationship to Martha plus a baby. Maybe the guy that didn't shoot her was him.
1:35 not really, Italy betrayed Germany (again) and part of it switched side, but the north was still kinda loyalish so they fought against the new self proclaimed enemies, not necessarily invade them
Harry,i'm obsessed with you Love your work,i can hear you explain stories for hours. Thank u,keep playing more horror games and more videos for us to explain ♥️♥️♥️
That kind of abuse, even if drug-fueled and no fault of her mother's, would definitely leave a permanent lasting scar on a child. Even if she were able to come to terms with it and separate from the Julia ego, she'd never be the same again.
I feel like if this was a movie this story would get much more recognition. I think it's a shame how so many amazing stories go by without any attention due to the medium of video games still not being something very main stream.
@@rafaelalodio5116 tbh i dont think thats the case. i think its bc it was too slow paced. that's good don't get me wrong, but ppl dont wanna play a story game if its almost 2 or 3 hours long with no answers to their questions. and still theres alot of things unanswered.
I actually think its impressive they had pervitin in this game. Its an amphetamine pill like adderall or ritalin that the nazi's developed to give to the troops for blitzkrieg. That was why they were able to be on the move 24/7 and move 100km a day.
I’ve seen tumblrinas reacting to twitchy hans and saying that they were “neurodivergent” Only to be slapped with the fact that “no hans is rocking back and forth because he’s out of his gourd on meth”
This is in many ways the most beautiful and well created game, and piece of art for that matter, that I’ve been fortunate enough to come across in my days. The dark/beauty contrast is majestic and very representative of this life.
this game was very confusing and I had no idea what was going on? I did like the lady's voice so I listened to her story. your explanation is very clear and helpful. Thank you!
I always thought it was funny how when he parens argued she assumed it was always about her and her sister but maybe they were both just worried about Martha
Would you ever consiter doing a video about Downfall/The Cat Lady/Loreilai? All three take place in the same world and it's a rather scary and bizarre set that may or may not overlap.
I don’t know why but whenever I feel like something is screwed up on so many different levels I feel a deep pit in my stomach and while (I know this game isn’t real) I feel like this may have happened hundreds of times in recent history different places different names different genders but really, it’s all the same at the end of the day isn’t it?
This was actually the most disturbing game I’ve ever watched. Like I was about to turn it off. And it wasn’t just some gore, but her psyche. Masterfully done. I didn’t watch the video though I don’t want to remember.
The fact that the game had to be toned down is bullshit. Unless it’s blatantly something unacceptable then everyone should have absolute creative freedom. I hope they come out with an uncensored version.
I dont think that the part where she wakes up in her bed in a pool of blood, stating that its "more than usual" is her having a miscarrige.. I think that that was her masterbating severely until she bleeds; she stated she did that while in the asylym at the end of the game.
So on the spur of the moment, the living sister decides to pretend to be the sister who drowned, because she was the more popular one. But... she was deaf, so she's lumbered with having to pretend to be deaf for the rest of her life - to her own parents. But... one of the sisters was in a relationship, so she has to carry on the pretence with the boyfriend (I got a bit mixed up which sister was actually in the relationship, tbh). But... the boyfriend was in an illegal revolutionary group. Also but... her father was a general in the military the boyfriend was fighting against. If there had been no other extenuating circumstances, the life swap may have been a viable plan, but all the other stuff makes it just nuts. I've probably got everything mixed up, but even on the surface, this seems a crazy situation. Love the channel! All these games I'll never play, but often wondered about - you provide a great service in explaining them, and nicely delivered too.
I agree that Martha develop the idea, but my only difference in this area I believe that she didn’t actually give birth, I believe that she hallucinated giving birth to her and her sister. And that’s why the baby that came out was deformed, because it was if you have her and her sister Julia.
1:37 those are Supermarine Spitfires, and no, Germany didn't invade Italy. They were allies, Germany has only sent soldiers to aid Italy (like when the Waffen-SS and Fallschirmjäger have helped Mussolini escape once)
Based on the fact that at one point "Julia" suspects that her mother killed Martha, I wonder if the "Julia" alter was triggered and re-surfaced due to a confrontation with her mother who may have realized or found out she (Martha) is pregnant when her mother met her by the lake. Obviously her mother would've been furious with her having an affair, not to mention with a resistance fighter. Her mother's abusive tendencies may have also in turn been brought to the front due to her own past.
Probably closer to the remake being released if I’m honest. Currently playing through God of War, Bioshock, Silent Hill and Mafia Series for long form videos.

Julia is definitely the core, not Martha. In DID, usually the core is not aware of the alt.
but she had a Martha necklace the whole time. wouldn't her mother give her a necklace with her name on it then? Martha is the main and G is the alt
Really confusing story, but you managed to explain it in the most reasonable way
I’m wondering who the funeral was for since Martha was never real, and the one daughter was obviously still alive.
The part about Giulia’s death in ‘town of light’ probably refers to when she died
In the asylum
There was no funeral. And when was the body in the casket ever acknowledged?
@@sol15_apparently it did because in a previous game made by the devs (town of light) that takes place in the same asylum giulia was admitted to, you can see a newspaper article announcing the death of giulia, the funeral time, and the surviving family members
What an interesting story, if this was a book I would read it.
But also this game looks amazing for an indie game, as good as most triple A games.
My favourite TH-cam channel
This is one of those games where you think you know exactly what is going on the first time you play it. Once you know that there never was any Giulia it makes you understand the entire game different and have a much deeper appreciation for the storytelling and not treating the audience as fools.
this was a confusing story but harry managed to do a fantastic job at explaining it ..thanks harry :)
With the way the beds are set up, I wonder if it's just a reflection turned bedroom. Like the sisters room was just a mirror in her true bedroom.
I wonder if it would help explain more from this game
Your lore & order series never disappoint!
you've managed to make the story make sense in a really simple way. thank you so much! this game's story is so good and heartbreaking
As a person with DID, you did a really good job explaining it and were very respectful, which is hard to come by. Thank you!
If you're not too uncomfortable responding, how is life like with DID?
@@LineOfThyI wouldn’t bother asking, most people on the internet that say they have DID really don’t. They just want attention.
Wait that’s a real thing damn
@@dragonking2719 yeah a disorder is real lol
@@dragonking2719 It's not. It's just some zoomer acting autistic for clout on tiktok. Multiple personality disorders doesn't work like that and work more like the game actually.
Just found your series of videos and I've been binging them for about a week now. Great stuff
I have no idea how you play so many of these games, they all seem so horrifying and .. nightmare inducing
Horror tolerance, insensitive to grimy and gory stuff
I just wanna take pics of his collection 😩
Man, you're REALLY good at this stuff.
Finally a good, reasonable explanation. Not like those Google messy blogs. Thank you so much.
1:35 not really, Italy betrayed Germany (again) and part of it switched side, but the north was still kinda loyalish so they fought against the new self proclaimed enemies, not necessarily invade them
Harry,i'm obsessed with you
Love your work,i can hear you explain stories for hours.
Thank u,keep playing more horror games and more videos for us to explain
♥️♥️♥️
I loved this game. It wasn't scary, but boy was it engaging
You are a great storyteller
Thank you very much for this explanation. As someone who play video games mostly on youtube, you saved like 5-6 hours for me. Great game.
That kind of abuse, even if drug-fueled and no fault of her mother's, would definitely leave a permanent lasting scar on a child. Even if she were able to come to terms with it and separate from the Julia ego, she'd never be the same again.
This is one of the most disturbing video game stories I've ever heard. I love mind bending stories like this
Thanks. I was so confused at first. Your explanation makes so much sense.
Such a heartfelt game, extremely underated!
I’ve seen tumblrinas reacting to twitchy hans and saying that they were “neurodivergent”
Only to be slapped with the fact that “no hans is rocking back and forth because he’s out of his gourd on meth”
I'm a recent fan to this channel. every video is super interesting. awesome content 👍
Really appreciated this deep dive.
Also I can only see Victoria Pedretti during Martha/Guilia
This is so well-made, we stan
This is in many ways the most beautiful and well created game, and piece of art for that matter, that I’ve been fortunate enough to come across in my days. The dark/beauty contrast is majestic and very representative of this life.
@1:18 "You do not recognize the bodies in the water."
Keep up with the great videos! Your Lore and Order videos are always fun to watch.
OMG YOU DID IT !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I'm happy these games came out it definitely shows one side of a coin that many choose not to flip. Awareness is key.
this game was very confusing and I had no idea what was going on? I did like the lady's voice so I listened to her story. your explanation is very clear and helpful. Thank you!
Omfg thanks to you, I FINALLY understand this confusing ass plot. Thank you!!!
I always thought it was funny how when he parens argued she assumed it was always about her and her sister but maybe they were both just worried about Martha
This is why l like this channel. Because Harry is so good to tell the story in games.
Would you ever consiter doing a video about Downfall/The Cat Lady/Loreilai?
All three take place in the same world and it's a rather scary and bizarre set that may or may not overlap.
been waiting for this!
9:23 Well one thing that caught my eye is the german bottle of "Pervitin" basicly Meth :D that is something I didnt expected
Huh... this interpretation actually makes a lot of sense, especially the connection with town of light.
7:45 and what happeneds when I don't help the resistance and tell the father what's going on? Hello???
The exact same thing happens. Otherwise I would’ve mentioned it.
Awesome work you are doing!! may gods watch over you!
8:15 is the marcello/bach adagio in d minor XD
My my, very well done, I wish I could focus and pay that much attention when playing games, I was so confused playing it
I agree that Martha develop the idea, but my only difference in this area I believe that she didn’t actually give birth, I believe that she hallucinated giving birth to her and her sister. And that’s why the baby that came out was deformed, because it was if you have her and her sister Julia.
Damn, Town of Ligth is just a masterpiece for me. One of the best games imho. Also great video! :D
This game reminds me of Pans Labyrinth, a some kind horror movie wich is also based on the fantasy of girl in the WW2
I didn't even know this game existed but it seems like a great story
1:37 those are Supermarine Spitfires, and no, Germany didn't invade Italy. They were allies, Germany has only sent soldiers to aid Italy (like when the Waffen-SS and Fallschirmjäger have helped Mussolini escape once)
Man.. I love this channel!!
Weird how this game is criticized when outlast dlc literally has genital mutilation..
People get weird about violence from women. It scares them.
fire explanation 🔥🚒🧑🚒
Hell ya been waiting for this video to drop
10:14 "We had sex." Hmmm she sounded very proud of that...
Early 😌 thanks for killer content !!❤️❤️
It’s almost like Moon Knight. Where we see the characters going back and forth.
Also, I love Town of Light. Since that does deal with mental illness.
Martha is Dead and The Town of Light are visually stunning and moving
A great explanation and you included the side quests ❤️
11:17 eat the family dog!? Sheez thats intense
well, at least Martha was never approached by the Egyptian god of the moon
Wow what a dark and tragic story. It's very interesting though.
“…compared to how your game played out.” Ha! I’m too much of a scaredy-pants to have played a game to compare anything too.
You did an excellent job on this. Thank you.
Love ur vids, when will u make a video about Dead Space? I can't wait for that
Probably closer to the remake being released if I’m honest. Currently playing through God of War, Bioshock, Silent Hill and Mafia Series for long form videos.
@@GamingHarryYT Yeeeeess! Can't wait to see your take on the Bioshock series. It's one of my top-tier world building and storytelling in my gaming experience. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
The story in this game is amazing!
Interesting video tbh, there is a game I'm kinda wondering about and that is "In sound mind" I played through it but it's kinda odd and a little confusing at times.
How do you explain the scraps of newspapers from the Town of Light, which are written about the funeral of Giulia K. ?
