  • The Rivian R1S and Tesla Model X Plaid each take a very different approach to the large luxury three-row EV SUV segment - a segment in which they’re essentially the only two major players. Tesla’s got years of experience under its belt at this point - though it’s definitely still a startup - while Rivian is the newcomer looking to fight. Both SUVs are mega-powerful and lay down performance figures that seem to defy the laws of physics, and both boast impressive electric ranges. So, which one comes out on top? Join Edmunds’ Ryan ZumMallen in the video above to find out!

On the R1S "flat floor" comment, you missed the fact that the floor cover in the back can be moved to sit up behind the folded seats, converting the whole thing into a flat floor you can sleep on. I only mention it because it was specifically called out by customers as a "nice to have" and they added it into the design. Kind of speaks to it's camping theme.

Informed and well-reasoned. Thank you. Sometimes what drives you (no pun intended) in one direction or another as a buyer in these comparisons is your most important requirements. If you live in a flood-prone area, for example, you will value the R1S significantly above the X because it has more than a 3-foot wading depth. If you value acceleration above all else, you will prefer the X. If you value people-hauling comfort more than other characteristics, you'll favor the R1S. If you value road-tripping capability, you'll select the X, because of the Tesla supercharging and destination charger networks. If price is most important, you'll select the R1S. If cool is most important, you might select the X. If cargo capacity is most important, you'll prefer the R1S. If company risk is most important, you'll lean toward the X. If utility (air compressor, rooftop carrying, and towing) is driving you (no put intended), you'll like the R1S better. If you like the Elon Musk brand better, you'll choose the X. If you like off-roading, you'll select the R1S. Most important requirements. Everybody has them. They drive (no pun intended) everything.

Decent video (thank you!) but apples to oranges. Comparing what is akin to a body on frame Sports UTILITY vehicle to a ‘cross over’. The fact that the R1S can do all it can do and still be in the same conversation as a Plaid (Speed, Passenger capacity etc) almost twice its price is what is astounding.
And performance comparison was done with the worst of the three Wheel/tire combinations for that purpose. Try the same with the 22” which many of us configured. :)

Superb comparision and one of the best car reviews I've come across. Thanks for doing it. Our first Tesla was a 2013 preowned Model S P85 with 0-60 in 4.1. Sadly I thought I had to have the Model 3, having driven Tesla loaners with AP. I had not driven a 3 and back then had barely sat in one. My wife drives the 3 & rarely uses AP, actually never is more like it. She is just not into gadgets. Wish I had kept the S, driven both the few months then either kept both or sold the 3 as it is no where near as fun to accelerate as the P85 was. I'm lookiing at these two cars as well as upcoming Ford Lightning, EX90 from Volvo. Also looking at Lucid. Its styling is ok, but not a model S in this regard. I have never liked the Tesla yoke and your video confirms my thoughts esp in regard to U turns. Also miss the stalks. A solution in search of a problem. I don't expect Elon to ever back down re the yoke, so I may just look for a preowned S or X. Third party round steering wheels still don't restore stalks and not sure affect on Tesla warranty. Those are my thoughts and thank you once again for a great video.

I find it weird that anyone would compare one over the other without reference to use case. If you’re never going to go off road and rarely transport 6 or 7 adults the Tesla is a better option. (Edmunds should have had a 7 seat version to compare 7 seat functionality.)
The Rivian is designed for the adventure set, not suburban chic.
The Rivian is a beast off road.
Lastly, there was no review of the real luxury of these vehicles which is the software and apps that control them. Both Rivian and Tesla provide great features that aren’t available in any other manufacturer vehicles regardless of drive train.

I disagree. The R1S just a bigger vehicle. Of course if money is no object go with the Model X. But if you have kids you’ll understand why a parent would pick the R1S over the Model X. Regarding the yoke, Tesla didn't implement it well. What I'm reading is Toyota got it right with the Lexus RZ. And I'm not talking about other aspects of the RZ, only the steer by wire yoke in the RZ has a very short lock to lack and is variable so parking and sports maneuvers are much easier.
The X is a tall car, another crossover and the performance is overkill unless you track it. The R1S is more like an SUV in that it goes off-road and is meant to go off-road. But it is quite a large vehicle. The comparison is apples to oranges and the Model X is way more expensive.

Speaking of yoke steering, instead of doing hand over hand you use your palm. Which is how I drive with a steering wheel anyways. It's how I was taught in driver's ed. Also, I've never driven with a yoke but the idea is it uses fewer materials, gives you more room, and it doesn't block any displays or your view. I drive a Mazda 2 which is considered a sport subcompact. When I adjust the steering wheel into a comfortable position it blocks the gauges and I have to glance underneath the steering wheel to see the speedometer or any of the gauges instead of just a quick glance down.

I think Tesla’s software is better than Rivian and the Model X will likely be more efficient even with it’s much smaller battery. But I do have a hard time seeing them keeping the price at the same as ordered when they finally become available next summer or so. And I could understand that as well. For example a nice R1S is $75K for the quad motor with the original order. I can't see how they can keep to that next year. But when they get these refined a bit with Sandy Munroe it will be worth the higher price and they should in my opinion adjust the price and I say that as a reservation holder of a White R1S.

I own a 2022 Model X. Gear selection is a non issue like all these journalists like to make it. Slider on the screen is easy to use and is impossible to accidentally bump. Intelligent gear selection from start.... just to be clear, works 100% of the time. Additionally the yoke is easy to get used to but it's biggest benefit is a completely uninterrupted view of the screen which is great. For normal driving (about 95% of the time) it works absolutely fine. For hand over hand turns (about 5% of the time) when you are in a car park or doing a u-turn you just get used to it and it is worth the sacrifice for the uninterrupted view. But.... this is Edmunds. Honestly, the yoke "debacle" is akin to blackberry users in 2007 screaming.... "how can you have no buttons on your phone". It's also impressive what Rivian is doing!!

    • @SoCalVipers
      @SoCalVipers ปีที่แล้ว

Are you saying that your auto gear selection works 100% of the time? On my Model S, it's got to be 50% or worse. I'll pull into a parking spot, and then when I return to the car and I'm ready to leave it will suggest driving straight into a pole, a tree, or another parked car most of the time.
I don't agree with he reviewer regarding the shifter on the touch screen. I find that to be really fast and easy.
I gave the Yoke a good try for about 6 months, but finally ditched for a round, nappa leather steering wheel. the feel of real leather in my hand makes me feel like I'll driving a luxury car. I actually had no problem with the Yoke in a parking lot, I just used one finger and cranked it as if I were using a suicide knob.
I hated the Yoke in high speed driving. I felt like I had no control of the car in a high speed turn. With a round wheel, I feel like I'm driving a performance car again. The aftermarket steering wheel I have is REALLY heavy. The additional weight has an unexpected benefit, slow turns are much smoother now.
Overall, I really appreciated the comparison. I would love to own a Rivian. I don't want two Teslas. I personally prefer the feel of a Sedan for daily driving. For a road trip in an EV, the Tesla super charger network is essential. I would love to have a Rivian truck as a second car. I'll likely buy one used in a few years - assuming I can get one for half price.

One thing that all the reviews comparing Rivian and Tesla do not cover the comparison of how the companies support their customers. My son owns a R1T and I own a model Y. Tesla sucks in customer support and Rivian really goes the extra mile in this area. I found Tesla customer support is basically none. And whenever you do get hold of anybody in the service area, their attitude generally come across as arrogant to a point that I find them very unpleasant to deal with.

I wouldnt base my decision on which ones goes faster in 0 to 60, or the quarter mile, or top speed. All those things are irrelevant. Is the vehicle safe, does it have enough room to be comfortable in. Will I have a hard time adjusting to something that is built so different from a regular vehicle. I dont like Tesla Steering wheel, and lack of blinker arm. Just those two things alone would turn me away from any vehicle. I think I will wait about 10 years or so before I think about getting any kind of EV. By then the price should come down about half way, and their will be more options.

If you need a minivan but want something cooler, get the X. If you are going to go off road, are more of an adventure type driver, may or may not have kiddos, get the R1S. I think the X is still better for most people who have more than 1 kid and are resistant to owning a traditional mini van.

Without a doubt the Tesla X is far Superior. Better range, faster than a speeding bullet, did I mention the incredible wing doors? The yoke is now optional. The seven passenger X lays completely flat. The 2023 Rivian gets 66 mpg while the 2023 Tesla gets an amazing 107 mpg. No comparison. Model X has a drag coefficient of just .24 Cd, the lowest of any production SUV on the planet, while Rivian has a has a drag coefficient of 0.30 Cd. Tesla has the largest super charger infrastructure in the world, Rivian, not so much.

I have an X Plaid and have R1S on order. The R1S is built for adventure, road tripping but it has poor efficiency. Poor charging. And relies on a crap network in EA, and has no heat pump so I can’t take it to ski unless I’m willing to give up more efficiency.
So I’m going to take delivery just because it is a good deal. But because of its poor efficiency and lack of network. I’d still end up taking the X on road trips when I would prefer the space of the R1S

I have a Model X Plaid in the exact same setup as the one tested (red/white/20") and I love everything about it. While the price is high, you will not find any other new vehicle for less money that will beat the acceleration of the Model X Plaid. I run 9.80's every time I go down the track (1/4 mile) and my personal best 0 to 60 is 2.38 seconds (measured with Dragy). The Model X is Drag Race car daily driver and perfect road trip and family vehicle all in one. The interior doesn't feel as luxerious like a Mercedes Benz but it is very functional with amazing tech.

Rivian is much better 7 seat car than a Tesla. Much more functional too if you have to haul bulky items like washing machine or fridge. Flat roof top also offer much better carrying capability than Tesla. Overall, Tesla if you want to accelerate like crazy, Rivian if you want a functional all purpose 7 seater EV. But for average person, they should wait for Kia EV9. Lots of room and heck of lot cheaper than either Tesla or Rivian.

Yeah of all the complaints, the gear selector should not be one unless you are just 'old man shaking fist at clouds'. After using it a couple times one realizes how absolutely silly it is to have some sort of dedicated stalk/lever/whatever piece of plastic. Swiping is trivial and easy.

Rivians R1S destroys the Model X in every real world scenario. Who, in their right mind would throw $150k away on a vehicle that hemorrhages money so fast as a Tesla. $150 gets you into far more aspirational brands!
