    Bought mine refurbished on eBay and saved $30.
    I've always bought my pro cameras refurbished because each camera body is individually tested before the sale.
    This proved true with the Dremel. It works perfectly. 2-year warranty. It had everything except the blue holder. I can live with that for a $30 savings!

    Good point on the collet, 3mm. Just bought a 4300. The Chuck is ideal as is the cuttersystem with the quick fit.

    Thanks a lot for your good review!! But after contacting the Dremel service contactcentre: the 4300 will be withdrawn from the range at the end of the year. The biggest differences of the 4250 vs. 4300 is that the ventilation of the 4250 has been improved, giving the unit a quieter operation than the 4300 and also has a lower vibration level. The multi-drill chuck can also be purchased separately if desired. The lamp that is included with the 4300 can also be purchased separately if desired. The 4250 is the newest version of the Dremel multitools.

      That's interesting to know. It must be at least a couple of years since I did this review so it was only a matter of time before it is superseded.

      No problem, I took a bit of a gamble as I couldn't find any proper reviews on this model. Like most I will watch loads of videos when buying tools like this. Obviously these are my own views and may differ from others.

      Go for this, or the Dremel 3000. They come in handy, either a profesional a hobbist, or simply for fixing things around the house. IT's also a tool that creates stuff. either art, or imrove other tools. I can't describe how many uses I had with my Dremel. It's the Victorinox Swis Army knives of power tools and more than that. Perfect tool for small and medium stuff where normal power tools can't work.

    Good video; the pencil grip accessory is definitely worth getting for any work when you're not using the flexi-shaft or router. You can also get a fan that attaches to the collet screw that really moves a lot of dust. Unfortunately it can't be used with the pencil grip or router base attached. I think it can with the flexi-shaft, but I don't have that accessory yet, so just have to check & see if it will. Nice balanced review; I look forward to more videos.

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Lee. I thought about the pencil grip but if I'm going to be using it for longer periods then I would use the flexi shaft. I still found it reasonably comfortable holding the main router as shown, just it wouldn't be good for long periods. The fan would be great to use with the router attachment if ti fitted.

    Excellent review Paul. I have two of the 3000 series, the first one died at about 14 months, motor burned out ( looking back probably because I gave it the beans too often - oops !). The second one has been trouble free over two years. I have both the circle cutting jig & the router conversion, the latter comes as a clear shroud that surrounds the body higher up, makes it look & feel like a proper router, & helps so you can see where you’re going. Haven’t seen the black version before. I guess you gets what you pays for, the quality of build is excellent, my first gave up probably to me being a trifle “hard on it”. One recommendation from me is making sure you blow any dust that gets into the machine well and truly out before putting it back into storage case.
    Enjoy & as always, best regards.
    Geof

      Are you sure the motor burned out, there is a known fault with the 3000 model, i have two to, but repaired the one that broke, it was just the connection on the commutator wire had come lose, a quick solder, and it was working fine again

    Thanks for the excellent review.
    I have had a cheap Chinese rotary tool for many years, but only recently have been using it to any degree. I find that it is a great adjunct to a lathe, and is great to adding texturing and other surface decorations to turnings. I've had a lot of fun carving spiral coves in wine stoppers using the very helpful flex shaft.
    The colored 'bits' are abrasive stones - red (coarse) and white (fine) are aluminum oxide, and gray is silicon carbide. There are also blue bits made by Foredom from a ceramic material that last longer than either the pink or gray stones, but also cost more. They are mainly used for grinding metal, but can be used for smoothing wood or on gem stones.

    • @monophoto1
      @monophoto1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And one more thing - periodically, it is necessary to lubricate the flex shaft. The indicator that lubrication is called for is that the handle gets hot. It's not a major project to lubricate a flex shaft - Dremel and others sell specialty lubricants, but general purpose molybdenum grease that you might have around the house is fine, and there are TH-cam videos that show how to do it.

      @PaulLockwood  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always worth shopping around for options. Not sure exactly the difference between the 4000 and 4300. The one thing I was keen on was the 3 jaw chuck as it would take a better range in size of bits especially as some cheap ones can be a fraction slimmer and it makes the use of them dangerous if they don't fit securely. thank you for sharing your find.

    Are you wearing an amcor flexible packaging shirt 😳

  • @BigParadox
    @BigParadox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Paul, I have a question for you, that perhaps you have a good answer to. I recently bought a 4300 too, and I cut some aluminum with it. It works perfectly, but I am concerned with safety. Typically when you cut (and not polish or grind, or so) you tend to put your body and head in the plane of rotation (in order to see from the best perspective and cut straight). This means that if the disc breaks the pieces might fly with high speed towards your head or body. I certainly wear safety glasses, but the rest of the face, my neck and rest of the body is unprotected. Have you any idea of how one could arrange for good safety when using cutting discs like that?

    • @BigParadox
      @BigParadox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can add that I had some idea to watch the working piece via mirrors, like with a horizontal periscope, to get my entire body out of the rotational plane :) but that is perhaps a bit overly complicated.

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Being a Wood Turner I do have a full face shield I could always wear. You can buy these cheap which should certainly give enough protection for the face. As to neck etc. that will come to your clothing. Like you I always wear safety glasses as a minimum even when shaping wood (anything that is not polishing) as it's not worth the risk of anything heading towards the eyes at such a force.

    • @BigParadox
      @BigParadox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaulLockwood, thanks, yes I have considered a full face shield, and I also found a cheap one. We will see if I use that solution, or if I go for some more complicated idea with the persicope invention or so :).

    • @evergreenrider
      @evergreenrider 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A face shield. Pretty simple fix

    • @BigParadox
      @BigParadox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@evergreenrider It seems so, yes. I am just very aware of what can happen. A friend of mine got a couple of fingers cut off from a rotating disc that broke in high speed. It was not a Dremel situation. The power is very strong when such accidents happen. Even a face mask might not be enough. It depends on its specifications. The fingers of my friend could not be saved.

    I've always wanted a dremel and found the 4300 9/64 on sale for like 40% off. And I had a gift card so it literally cost me nothing! I was wondering if it is capable of using a carbide tip to grind / cut off the head of a countersunk stripped deck screw..i want to try and salvage as many boards as I can because the underside is still in fantastic condition. And prying them up just destroys boards. I also have screw extractors and drill bits for my impacts but wondering if the dremel would help or if it would kill it..good video. Hope you reply!

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Todd. I don;t think it would kill the Dremel, but it might push your patience as to how long the task would take. Personally I think I would drill as much as possible to wear away as much of the head as possible. If you have little bits (which would probably just break off anyway) then the Dremel could be used.

  • @owdjockey4459

    Hi Paul, overall a good review and the idea of doing a review after actually using the tool is something that I wish other reviewers would do. So well done mate. I still have my cheapie Workzone one, which is still ok for what I want. I would say that 90% of the attachments you get with these tools are pants, but as a fellow turner I would strongly advise getting what is called a Saburr Tooth Burr. They are the biz for removing wood, you can get various shapes and sizes............................but they are expensive, they cost about £15 (average) each. I have a green one (coarse) and a yellow one (fine). When my Workzone rotary tool packs up (the rotary extension cable has already broken) I will consider a Dremel. So thanks for the review.

    • @PaulLockwood
      @PaulLockwood  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I've seen people use the Saburr Tooth bits before. Will certainly look those up and see what I can get.
      I still have the Maplins rotary tool and I have to say that the quality of the Dremel is so much higher. It was only because the Maplins one was struggling and the chuck size that I decided to replace it.

      That's a personal choice. I believe that the 4300 is a higher spec that the 4200. I also believe that either Dremel no longer make the 4200 or they just don't advertise it as it no longer appears on their website.

      I cannot see why not. This model is more versatile with the style of Chuck in that the shaft don’t have to be a a precise size which is ideal when you buy cheap bits that may be out a little.

      You could. However by hanging it from the ceiling allows the cable to only have a gentle bend when using it. The main thing you need to do is make sure that the drive cable is not given too much pressure on a bend to allow free use and save on future wear and tear.

      If you listen at about 9:15 I do say that the manual covers the 3000, 4000 and 4300. This is how they keep the cost down by producing one manual as most models are similar.
      The 4300 is I believe the only model of those that comes with the light on the front and also the only one that uses a 3 jaw chuck rather than the collet system. This was why I wanted the 4300 for the 3 jaw chuck more than anything as it holds different sized bits.
