Yeah, I've had a couple of launches like this, and seen a few more. A water landing means the ship will fully submerge, then rebound and try to right itself, which is kind of underwhelming. I once saw someone get enough depth to see the green sky from the ferry of the damned (which is beneath the map). I also once got the ship stuck upside down, causing it to sink. If you get enough horizontal distance to leave the playable area then you (and the ship) get respawned as normal.
